" Ashfall is a strange choice of title for this unexpected South Korean mega-hit. Of all the disasters in the film, it's probably the least spectacular. Remember how the US piled one disaster on top of another in Roland Emmerich's 2012? This is the point at which South Korea steps us and says "Hold my beer. " Sure, human civilisation itself is not in peril this time, but it doesn't need to be, because the rather more adept Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo give us characters we actually care about, making the events we see much more meaningful. It begins with an earthquake taking place just as explosives expert Jo In-chang (Ha Jung-woo) is on his way to join his pregnant wife Choi Ji-Young (Bae Suzy), who is getting a scan in the hospital. In the scenes reminiscent of The Quake, skyscrapers crumble, Jo frantically weaving his car between them. Many filmmakers would have found enough to keep them busy with this scenario alone, but in Ashfall, everything goes one louder. This quake, you see, is only the first of four likely to be generated as a series of magma chambers inside Baekdu Mountain collapse. Only one scientist has a plan that might save the peninsula from utter devastation, and it's a long-shot. If a mixed team of soldiers and techies can cross stealthily into North Korea and rescue spy Ri Joon-Pyeong (Lee Byung-Hun) fro a high security prison camp, he may be able to help them steal uranium from missiles in a US-guarded base which they could then use to blow a hole in the side of the volcano to relieve the pressure. In order to avoid an international incident that could spark a nuclear war, however, they can't kill anyone. Attempts at international collaboration are rife with double-crosses. And Ri may be a double agent. When one of the two planes sent on the mission is downed by the thick ash in the air, Jo, roped into the techie team, unexpectedly finds himself the leader, a job for which he is completely unprepared. And his wife might give birth at any minute. And he hasn't told her where he's going. With a plot as complicated as this it would be easy to go astray, delivering a series of clumsy escalations without any real sense of tension. Against the odds, Ashfall works at a dramatic level, largely thanks to the hard work of its cast and a real sense of commitment to the story that holds no matter how silly things get. The action direction is of variable quality and sometimes the CGI lets it down, but overall it's a lot more coherent than one would expect. The pacing never lets up for a moment and the dramatic tension between Jo and Ri - which occasionally spills over into comedy - holds the attention even though most viewers will have a fair idea how their relationship will ultimately pan out. What's more, the action isn't limited to those on the mission, with every supporting character getting moments of peril and opportunities to be heroic. Bae makes her character much more than a helpless love interest and there's also good work from Jeon Hye-jin as a civil servant determined to give her country - and Jo's mission - the best chance they can get. In keeping with Korean cinematic tradition, there's more sentiment here than most Westerners are used to, but it doesn't weight the film down - there's too much happening for that. The North Korean public is presented as cowed and despairing, in need of rescue by those from the South, but this isn't a difficult position to relate to in light of what's going on, and otherwise there's relatively little politics. Jo is a likeable central character and Lee keeps us guessing with his rakish portrayal of the spy. Ashfall may be over the top in every way but it has a solid core and it certainly knows how to entertain. Reviewed on: 18 Jan 2020.

The fact that this trailer completely changes the perception of the movie is proof that the criticism was warrented. When the ash settles, what remains on screen is the molten wreckage of a high concept crowd-pleaser that, in its efforts to be everything for everyone, ends up delivering precious little to anyone at all. (Courtesy of CJ Entertainment) South Korea is no stranger to disaster movies. 2009’s Haeundae saw a tsunami destroy Busan, 2016’s Pandora imagined a Fukushima Daiichi -esque nuclear disaster in Korea, and 2019’s Exit comedically depicted a toxic gas cloud engulfing Seoul. None of these disaster movies feels as epic as Ashfall (a. k. a. Baekdusan) though. In Ashfall, an ensemble cast race to save the Korean peninsula from volcanic armageddon, while also fending off meddlesome foreign interests. The film feels like a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, replete with common tropes. Yet, it retains a distinctively Korean flair with its geopolitical context. Baekdu Goes Boom Courtesy of CJ Entertainment. With a purported US$17 million budget (large by Korean standards), Ashfall went all-out in recruiting A-listers. Box office king Ha Jung-woo plays Captain Jo In-chang, a South Korean Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician. Just as Jo and his wife Ji-young (played by K-pop superstar Bae Suzy) are expecting a baby, Mount Baekdu in North Korea erupts. Earthquakes ravage both Koreas, and ash begins to choke the sky. If supervolcano Baekdu keeps erupting, the entire Korean peninsula will die. We then meet Robert Kang Bong-rae, a Korean-American scientist played by Ma Dong-seok ?who usually portrays beefy tough guys, but doesn’t have a single fight scene in Ashfall. Hauled in to advise South Korea’s government, Kang suggests a 600 kiloton nuclear explosion beneath Baekdu will stop its eruptions. There’s a small wrinkle. South Korea doesn’t have nukes, and Baekdu is on the far side of North Korea along the Chinese border. Rather conveniently though, North Korea has nukes. South Korea’s government dispatches Captain Jo and a team of special forces to make contact with a North Korean agent named Ri Joon-pyeong (played by Lee Byung-hun), who knows the nukes’ location and can help the Southerners reach Baekdu to complete the mission. However, the airdrop into North Korea goes wrong and all the special forces die. This leaves Captain Jo and a ragtag band of explosives technicians to deal with the wily Ri, who has his own agenda. Tropes, from Hollywood to Seoul Ma Dong-seok and Bae Suzy in Ashfall. (Courtesy of CJ Entertainment) Ashfall draws from the same tradition as epic Hollywood disaster flicks like Armageddon and Deep Impact. The formula of an unlikely grouping of heroes using nuclear weapons as a deus ex machina against a massive disaster has been done to death in American film and television. We see this formula play out to the letter in Ashfall, with mass evacuations, Presidential announcements, ridiculously large explosions, and ultimate personal sacrifices to boot. Such disaster films don’t aspire for originality or cinematic innovation though; their only aspiration is to entertain. On this front Ashfall performs decently. If you’re willing to suspend disbelief around nukes being able to solve all of life’s problems, the film’s plot has good pacing, entertaining action sequences, and enough twists to keep your attention. Captain Jo and Agent Ri also have good chemistry; their reluctant partnership becomes fodder for sprinkles of comic relief that keep Ashfall from feeling too bleak. While at some points the CGI of Baekdu’s eruptions can feel a bit much, it’s quite a treat to see post-apocalyptic scenes of North Korean cities (a first for any movie). And More Tropes… From Baekdu To Halla? Courtesy of CJ Entertainment. Even if Ashfall borrows heavily from Hollywood formulas, it adds heavy coatings of Korean flavor due to its geopolitical context. The film belongs to a storied repertoire of South Korean dramas and movies featuring North Korea, a sub-genre that has its own tropes. Captain Jo and Agent Ri are the latest rendition of a South-North odd couple overcoming differences to help both Koreas, something we’ve seen in countless K-movies. In Ashfall, Jo and Ri must ward off American and Chinese designs on Korea; there’s even a scene where Jo stands between Chinese and American troops and yells for them to stop bickering. Such depictions of boorish Americans and Korea as the victim of constant foreign interference also occur in many other Korean movies and dramas, and perhaps reflect real-world anxieties. Furthermore, Mount Baekdu is sacred to the two Koreas. Both North and South Korea’s national anthems mention the mountain, and it’s a constant fixture in Northern propaganda and Southern socio-political discourse. Centering a movie around Baekdu taps into its status as a powerful reminder of a millenia-old Korean history and culture that transcends North-South divisions. All said, Ashfall might be a trope-ridden blockbuster, but it’s one with geopolitical significance. Even if the film draws from Hollywood formulae, it uses them to tell a story that trumpets Korea’s national identity?even at the expense of Uncle Sam. With its themes of North-South cooperation, Ashfall not only entertains, but also keeps the dream of Korean reunification alive amid recent difficulties.
