It would seem that, once again, over the previous year, I have seen movies. I can’t seem to shake them. Here, then, is my third annual list of what I watched, a list, as promised every year, that guarantees to enthrall everyone who is me, and precious few others. Which is why this may be the last one. I see movies. You get the idea. I might just keep future lists tucked away in an old sock in the closet where no one else has to look at them. This year saw a slight easing off from the banner year that was 2016, when I watched so many movies I turned, briefly, into a ham sandwich. Long story. I saw not nearly so many movies in theaters this year, and only a measly 58 on film. Oh, film! You are so very pretty. How I want to curl up in your shiny reels. Yet still I managed to check out 245 movies I’d never seen before. Whew. How many of these damn things are out there, anyway? Am I almost done? The stats: Total number of movies seen, including repeat viewings: 386 Unique movies: 382 Total theatrical: 104 Theatrical on glorious film: 58 Video: 282 First time seen: 245 By decade. Number of movies seen, and in parentheses, number that were first time seen: 1910s: 1 (1) 1920s: 8 (7) 1930s: 4 (2) 1940s: 21 (13) 1950s: 29 (22) 1960s: 37 (30) 1970s: 58 (40) 1980s: 61 (19) 1990s: 38 (11) 2000s: 39 (23) 2010s: 90 (77), of which 44 were released in 2017, and 29 in 2016 Which is all rather similar to the last two years of this experiment in statistics. I’m most drawn to the ’70s, in which era I still find a lot of new films to watch, and the ’80s, when I fell in love with movies and where, it seems, I return to be comforted by old favorites. Seems I still need to make a point of exploring the world of the ’30s and earlier. Most nights, though, I find that movies that old aren’t calling out to me. I noted last year which movies I’d seen in both 2015 and 2016. Any of those I’ve now watched three years running? Yep. They are: Inside Llewyn Davis, which gets better every time I watch it; Lawrence of Arabia, which thanks to the Castro Theater I’ve seen the last three years in 70mm (after a couple of dreary years in which they played the digital version); The Lone Ranger, because sometimes I like to watch a modern explodey summer action movie that’s genuinely good, and this is one of the few; The Thing, because it’s comfort food (and because the Alamo showed it in 70mm this year (in a print, however, that wasn’t as nice as a few of the 35mm prints I’ve seen of it in recent years)); and Upstream Color, the most disturbingly beautiful and beautifully disturbing movie made in ages. It’s not like the days of my youth, when I’d watch movies over and over again. They’re much more likely to become fixed in my brain (or waft right on through it) after only one viewing these days. And as for the old and beloved, I can’t revisit them too often without feeling burnt out. As well, I’ve come to see over the years how satisfying it is to see an old favorite after a long absence. Delayed gratification, in other words. One of those damnable adult joys one can’t comprehend in one’s youth, but which work wonders when you let it. But enough blather. The majority of the videos are about this main huge issue: Western counties (in primis Usa, Uk, and some western countries) manipulate information and spread misinformation through mainstream media to mask their main goal: the control the world and its resources, not for their people but a few inhuman corporations\elites. They pretend to export democracy and pretend to save the poor people against their bad leaders, in reality they go there to colonize foreign land. They want to keep other countries poor and in chaos, full of debts and struggling; This is a criminal plan that is applied also internally to us: they want us to struggle with life so we cannot think, ask questions, rebel. It seems impossible and diabolic, but that's the crude reality; the videos I collected show exactly what is going on. Of all the people I know, just 3 or 4 know the truth, around 10 know something, the rest has no clue. The truth is out there but all of us MUST KNOW: that WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. Take your time to watch the documents and then do your best to spread the truth just by reaching out to other people. If you are a teacher, show them to your students. Come and See is a very impressive film that almost literally leaves you shaking after the camera tilts up to the sky in the final shot. It proves that war movies can only be made effectively when they are not visually and narratively sugar coated. For one, because this is cinematically more interesting and relevant, but more importantly because it does more justice to the people that underwent the atrocities of that particular war. "Come and see" is a tribute to the people in the former Soviet Union that were affected by Nazi atrocities. A tribute to those who died and to the survivors of the Nazi invasion. Visually it is a raw movie, allowing us to see what this war and war in general is like. It warns us how people can follow evil blindly and become dehumanized killing machines. And by showing this in every ugly detail we actually come as close as possible to knowing what went on in this Belarusian village. It does justice to those that died and suffered. Just as "Schindler's List" pays tribute to the six million Jews that were killed by the Nazis. Just as "The Deer Hunter" did justice to the soldiers that came back from Vietnam with post traumatic stress disorder. The point is that these movies were dramatic, but not melodramatic in its depiction of the premise to allow the viewer as accurate a depiction of the events that took place as is possible. "Come and See" is a very powerful movie that depicts the resiliency of a lesser equipped Partisan force that beat the Nazis. It also shows us that war can make numb, but that numb doesn't mean dehumanized. This shows in how Flyora shoots at the the portrait of Hitler in the montage sequence, but finally cannot pull the trigger when his thoughts portray Hitler as a baby. Klimov's message is that Flyora becomes the same as the Nazis if he'd shoot the baby picture, just like the general is saying in the scene before when he decides that the Nazis shouldn't be burned. They would stoop down to the animalistic level of the Nazis that we saw in the barn scene. Flyora joins the Partisans as a boy that is hardened by life, but still a human thinker fighting for a just cause. "Come And See" is a must see movie both for the messages that it conveys to us, but also because it is a very well crafted movie by a smart director.
It just hit me that the reason I love Georg so much is that I feel like I've been let in on the secret meaning of a private joke that I still don't quite get. And for that, I'm grateful. Come and See is a great movie about an event of our past, which formed our history and future. WWII might be something that many want to forget, but it is actually something that we all should remember in honor to those who lost their lives in the insane and tragic event. The acting in this movie is amazing and convincing in an emotional way, it is like experiencing the event when watching the movie. For Aleksey Kravchenko, being a young boy acting in such circumstances, carrying on the emotional and painfully feelings of the main character Florya, he did an amazing job, I really believed his pain. The movie succeeded in capturing how much people change both physically and psychologically by events like war. What war really do to you and how it changes people.
