This last November I flew with my wife to Japan. I would like to share about our experience, highlights and recommendations to travel to Japan. Also I want to point-out some activities or places that we wanted to do but we couldn't do. I hope that this information can help you to plan your trip. We planned to stay 2 weeks, 7 days traveling in Japan cities and 7 days in Tokyo. It started on 5 November 2019. I traveled with my wife from Bogota to Tokyo connecting at New York. The flight from New York was ANA 9 from JFK to Narita Airport. A 14-hour flight leaves at 10:45am and arrives the next day at 3:00pm. ## Day 1: Arriving Tokyo The immigration was fast and there wasn't any delay. After going out the immigration the checked baggage was available to pick up. I think it didn't take more than 30 minutes from the airplane to get the baggage. On the first day the plan was: Change the US dollars to Japan yens. Get a sim card for the mobile phone. Activate the Japan Rail Pass. Reserve Hello Kitty train. Arrive to the hotel next to Tokyo station. I am going to drill down the steps.. 1. Change the US dollars to Japan yens. Japan is mainly cash country. Temples, vending machines, street food and some restaurants and museums only accept cash. You can pay with credit card in convenience stores and mall's stores but you will need the cash to have a seamless experience. There are a lot of money exchange booths. We chose the one with the better exchange rate and we changed 1000USD. More than enough for what we needed but we didn't wanted to ran out of money. We use the credit card when possible and at the end of the trip we burnt out the cash in the tax free stores.!! In case of running out of cash you can go to the convenience stores that are 24h and use the ATM. When you withdraw money your bank will charge you a fee, check your bank. There are in almost each corner I heard that the best is 7-eleven. FamilyMart and Lawson also are everywhere. Also the post offices and train stations have ATM. 2. You will need to get connected to travel in Japan. If you have a good roaming plan you can skip this step. "Google Maps" is your best friend to know where you are and to catch a metro or train. The only issue that I had with "Google Maps" was in Kyoto because it gave wrong directions for local bus. I had to get another app to complement Google Maps. Other than that, It is a must have tool to moving around Japan. Be aware that Japan only sell data sim cards to foreigners. There are no voice plan. There are a lot of options available. Choose the one that better suits you. I bought a 3GB plan that almost made it for all the trip. I consumed all the data 3 days before departure. I wasn't a problem because I got used to move at the metro and I planned ahead using wifi. It cost 2800Y that is less than 28USD.!! There are free wifi in convenience stores, hotels, train stations, airport, shinkansen (bullet train), parks, and main streets, everywhere. You will be connected for free. My mistake was that I didn't disable youtube for cellular data use in settings. In the shinkansen the free wifi dropped quite a lot, so that, I think, it was the reason to exhaust the data. I recommend to install "Google Translate" and download the Japanese and English (or your native language). It is the best tool to read Japanese and communicate with non-English speakers. To read you only need to take the picture and translate with your finger the text that you require to read. The camera option is amazing but that will consume your data. Use it with precaution or if you have wifi connection. I use the "Google Translate" To communicate to buy a dryer, just typing or speaking through the phone made the trick. I bought the sim card in "Bic Camera" located in the Narita Terminal 2 Floor 4th. Check the manual with the configuration settings to set the network and to activate the sim card. Again there are several options to get connected. I saw rental pocket wifi as an option. 3. Activate the Japan Rail. The Japan Rail Pass or JR Pass is a pass that allow you to take any transportation (train, bus, ferry and metro) from JR group. Be aware that Tokyo has several metro lines that are not covered by this pass. Also the shinkansen trains NOZOMI and MIZUHO are not covered but you don't need then to reach your destination in Japan. They are only the fastest. It is worth it if you are going to travel a lot. It is only sell it to foreigners. In my case, only to do the round trip to Kyoto will pay for the JR pass for 7 days. Check the calculator in sites like:!! You have to buy the JR pass before arriving to Japan. There are several offices or agents that can sell it. The pass will be delivered by mail for activation at arriving in Japan. See deeper information at There are different combinations of JR passes. You can select by Sectors: East Japan, West Japan, Hokkaido, etc Classes Green "first class" or ordinary "economy class" Days: 7, 14 or 21 days. Check the following link with information about it: I bought the 7 days pass because my itinerary fits those days. Maybe the 14 days will be better if you want use it to take the train from Narita to Tokyo. The NEX train could cost 3000 yen and to use it for JR lines inside Tokyo. I went from the airport to Tokyo station using the 1000 yen Bus. To activate the JR pass you can use the offices in the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at the Narita airport. Check the link: Also the Tokyo station has a JR office to make reservations. I activated the JR pass for the next day. Take in consideration that the pass is for the consecutive days from activation and only last to midnight. That is why I took the 1000 yen bus to maximize the JR pass time.!! If you lose your JR pass you have to buy another. There aren't reprint or replacements. My wife is a Hello Kitty fan. She wanted to take the Hello Kitty theme shinkansen from Hiroshima to Osaka. This first day we made the reservation. Check the following link for itinerary and operation days and time table: 4. After arriving in the 1000 yen bus from the airport it was a good idea to stay next to Tokyo station to rest and get early the next day to take the shinkansen in Tokyo station. If you have the JR pass you can arrive by train. You can take the JR Narita Express (NEX). Thera are another options by train or taxi (if you don't mint to expend $). Check: I stayed at HOTEL UNIZO Tokyo Ginza-itchome. It is a nice Hotel with a lot of amenities. If you travel with a partner, I strongly recommend to reserve at least double bed. The rooms and beds in Japan are small for western standards. I use page to reserve all my hotels and I was a good experience. You have coupons and promotions with discounts that made the hotels more affordable. The only issue is that you must be ready for the hunt and check the options near the train and metro stations.!! I tried to reserve all the hotels near the train station. It is the best option to save time and money in your stay. In Tokyo I reserved near the Yamanote Line which is the best option. ## Day 2: Nara - Osaka On the second day we took the shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto (2h 20m) then a local train from Kyoto Station to Nara Station (45min). I endorse to do reserve the seats right side of the train. You will have a superb view of the Mount Fuji. From the Nara station a nice walk to the Todai-ji Temple took about 30min.!! The Kintetsu-Nara Station is closer to the Nara Park where you can find Nara Museum, Kofuku-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple. I recommend to program the google maps to reach that station instead Nara Station. We let our biggest bag at the Nara Station. There are coin lockers that you can use. Going to the Todai-ji Temple you will find: #Nara Park: he Nara Park where you can find Nara Museum, Kofuku-ji Temple and Todai-ji Temple. There are deer that are freely inside the park. They are considered "messengers of the gods", so they are special. You can feed them with cookies that are sell by 200yens. Be aware that they are wild animals. My wife was bitten by them, it was more a funny scene but It let a mark. #Kofuku-ji Temple: We didn't entry to the temple but we took pictures and the pagoda is beautiful. #Todai-ji Temple: Amazing temple. Worth to visit and get inside. The Buda is huge.. I recommend to see the Japanology chapter for the Todai-ji!! Horyuji Temple: A UNESCO world heritage. We could see it because we ran out of time. It was a mistake because it is at 11 minutes by train from Nara station. In Osaka we stayed in a hotel far away from train station. Big mistake because you lose time and money in the metro transfer. This city is well known for the food and the night activities. I went to the Dotonbori sign and we took a short cruise in the Dotombori River. A river boat sightseeing trip took around 20 minutes cruising under the city's 9 landmark bridges. I recommend this ride to take pictures in the night. I didn't want to go to the Osaka castle. I read reviews that is a reconstructed castle and it is a museum. There are a lot of activities that you can do in Osaka but I didn't have enough time so I skipped this city to prioritize other. ## Day 3: Osaka - Hiroshima. Still with the jetlag we leave the hotel very early in the morning and we took the shinkansen from shin-Osaka station to Hiroshima station. In 1h 45min we arrived to Hiroshima. The Nest Hotel Hiroshima Hatchobori is near the train station. Very nice hotel. You can walk or take the bus or better the tram. We only realize that the tram was the best option the last day. We stayed only one night time enough to go to: #Peace Memorial Park and its historic exhibitions. I can be a little crowed with school trips. #Atomic Bomb Dome: The only building that sto

I was prompted by a good friend to tell you guys about my life after he found out how much I love this sub. See, I live in the most northern part of Sweden, far north of the arctic circle. For centuries we’ve lived in these woods, currently outside Jukkasjärvi (now famous for its Ice hotel). Last time I went into town there were posters everywhere warning tourists about wandering moose attacking passers-by, but in my opinion there are things around here far more pressing to warn about. Many old things live in these woods, who at their core are neither good nor evil. It all depends on how you treat them. Because of that I figured I’d give you a list of some of my neighbours and things to keep in mind if you happen to stumble across one. If you come here, you most likely will. Vittran: In the books and movies about Ronja the robber’s daughter Vittror are portrayed as these hybrids between a bird and a woman, similar to harpies in Greek mythology. The truth about them is quite the opposite. Vittror mainly live underground and tend to remain invisible to human eyes, but they sometimes take the form of frogs. If you treat them well and provide them with food they’ll help you around the house, garden and stables. If you cross them, well… Let’s just say that you’d be better off up here if you treat any frogs you see with respect. I’ve seen the outcome of people who’ve hurt frogs, and the frog is always the one better off. There’s a lot more to these beings, but unless you tend to throw hot water around I think this ought to suffice for now. Lyktgubben: The old lantern man, basically. In life he tricked his way into getting land that wasn’t rightfully his, so now he wanders forever measuring the land as he goes. That’s what the stories say, at least. Most who’ve interacted with him believe he never truly lived and is simply another being who calls these woods and mires home. If you ever see a light moving in the distance, don’t approach it. It might be the lantern man, and you don’t want to disturb him. The church grimm: Back in the days there was a tradition of burying an animal underneath the corner block when raising a new church. This animal would come to guard the church and all its land, taking a monstrous form while doing so. As such it’s usually harmless unless you’ve been planning to do some grave robbing in your spare time. There are only two scenarios when this being causes trouble to ordinary people. The first one being if the church is torn down, setting free the now angry and confused grimm. My grandmother saw the results of this and she never got over it. The other scenario is if instead of an animal they buried a human child. They do not like being trapped. Skogsrået: Or the Huldra, which is what I’m gonna call her from now on for simplicity’s sake. This one is a bit more complicated than the rest, but I’ll try to keep it brief and only tell you what you need to know! Tell me if you guys wanna know more about her and I’ll make an update. The Huldra most often takes the form of a beautiful young woman trying to lure men into following her whim. She is charged with protecting a part of the forest and all the plants and animals in it. The simplest way to tell if someone is a Hulda is to look at her back, it’s hollow like the trunk of a dead tree. She also has the tail of a fox, but she usually tucks it away in her clothing. If you ever meet a strange woman in the woods, do not ever tell her your name. Always carry something of iron with you to throw in her path if she tries to attack you. You do not want to fall under her power. Sjörået: Like the Huldra, only she protects a lake or stream rather than a part of the forest. Be nice to her and she’ll be nice to you, just keep in mind that she can be as unpredictable as the water she protects. Mylingen: This is one we often have trouble with, unfortunately. A Myling comes into being after a child is murdered and dumped in the woods without being baptised. Most of the time they’ll cry or sing around where they were dumped, but they’ve also been known to attack travellers in an attempt at forcing them to help. Putting a Myling to rest is easy, as long as they’re in the right mood. Sometimes all you’ve got to do is give them a name. Yup, it really is that easy. Just go up to them and give them a name. Other times you’ve got to give them a proper burial, but this is also fairly simple. If they’re not in the right mood on the other hand, they won’t find rest until they’ve had revenge. I’ve seen it happen and it’s never sweet. You’d think these would be rare nowadays. Very very few unwanted children are born, after all. Thing is, Sweden is becoming more and more atheist and many parents opt out of baptising their children. In the big cities that’s usually fine! The old creatures don’t go near cities or even most towns, and it’s not like parents plan for the eventuality that their child will be murdered and dumped in the woods. It does happen though, but very rarely. Out here though you need the protection of ancient rituals, and so do your babies. If they don’t have it, they might not stay your baby for very long. Näcken: The river man plays a haunting tune. This guy is one of our most famous figures, and for good reason. He’ll sit in any large body of water and play his violin, luring the people who hear it to their death. Not the nicest guy and absolutely not a benevolent creature. There are ways to fend him off, but if you don’t speak one of the languages he knows there’s no point in telling you. He isn’t exactly lenient on errors in pronunciation. He can be bargained with, and if he isn’t playing you CAN speak with him. I wouldn’t recommend it though, it usually doesn’t end well. My family and I try to live in harmony with these beings and the forest we share, but it’s getting more and more difficult every year. They’re not very forgiving, after all, and trust once lost is lost forever. Please let me know if you want to know more about my little corner of the world. Take care of yourselves and remember to respect the woods!

The house on Miller Street was gorgeous. It really was a steal. The houses in the area were old, but beautiful. Our new home was no exception either. It had a rustic feel, a massive backyard that was mostly done up with a beautiful garden full of roses and two decks. One right out the back door and the second one further out in the yard, down towards where the woods began. The house had a finished basement, four bedrooms and an open concept. The kitchen had white granite countertops and we’d bought all new appliances to go with it. The hardwood floors were beautiful and flawless although we’d probably need carpet if they were going to stay that way. We had two boys and an anxious daschund and I knew that none of them would care much for the floors. The decor was a bit tacky. Some rooms had this faded rose wallpaper and others were painted a faded pink. The old appliances were very dated. They were mementos from the previous owner that we could fix. I remember the day that we moved into that house. My wife Lauren and I had seen it before but to the kids it was all new and they needed to explore every nook and cranny! “Hey, hey, hey! Gentle on the floors! ” I heard Lauren calling after them. She looked back at me, smiling nervously. I just smiled back at her. Even behind her nerves, I knew she was happy to be at our new home. I was glad to see she was warming up to it. She’d been on board with it until I’d told her why the price was so low. “Look Honey, the previous owner passed away in hospice. Not at the house, ” I’d said. “Well why is the price so low if he didn’t die in there? ” She’d asked. “Well, from my understanding. People seem to think he did. He was in his nineties, honey. If you make it to your nineties you’ve lived a full life. ” She’d folded her arms and furrowed her brow. “As long as he didn’t die in the house, I guess… Look, why don’t we talk to the realtor a bit more, maybe see if we can’t read up on things a bit more first. Okay? ” I’d agreed to her terms and let her do as much research as she wanted to. She’d turned up nothing. Morton Cooper had been an elderly WWII veteran who’d worked in construction until his retirement. As far as we could tell he had lived alone after his wife had died. He’d died in hospice of old age and by all accounts he was an unassuming but polite old man. With nothing to hold against the house, Lauren hadn’t been able to stop me from buying it and I was glad to see she didn’t regret it! “Dad! Look at the backyard! ” I heard my oldest son call. I just tipped Lauren a knowing smile before heading out back to join my sons. My oldest, James was only 6 but he was a good kid with bright eyes and a gap toothed smile. My youngest, Evan was only 4 but he was growing up so fast! He stared out at the backyard in wonder. I saw his eyes darting from the green grass, to the flower gardens to the little fountain that the late Mr. Cooper had put in. “Can we see it Dad? Please? ” “Absolutely you can, kiddo! ” I replied. “Hey, you wanna go and get Buck out of the crate? I’m sure he’d love to get some fresh air! ” “Yeah! ” James’ eyes lit right up at the thought of letting the dog out. “Come on Evan! ” He took off with his little brother chasing after him. In just a few moments I heard the skittering of nails on the hardwood floor and I opened the door as Buck the Dachshund and my two sons tore through it. I caught Buck immediately rolling in the grass and couldn’t help but smile at how happy he looked. Evan trudged through the flowers, taking a quiet pleasure in crushing them before he made his way towards the fountain. James went straight to the treeline to investigate. “Hey buddy, stay where I can see you! ” I called to James as I went to stop Evan from drinking the fountain water. “Sorry buddy. Not for drinking. That’s dirty, ” I explained. Evan looked at me as if I’d just told him that chocolate was illegal. I could already see him deciding whether or not this warranted a temper tantrum. I looked up to see James standing at the edge of the trees and picked up Evan before he’d made up his mind about that tantrum. I didn’t want to turn my back on him while the temptation of the garden fountain was still within his grasp. James was just staring off into the trees as I approached him. I stepped over the second deck and my foot nudged something. I looked down to see a styrofoam tray on the deck. It was the kind that they pack meat in at the grocery store. Shame about the senseless litter. I picked it up then looked up at James. It took a moment before he looked back at me. “What’cha looking at kiddo? ” I asked. “I thought I saw someone in the woods, ” He replied. “I don’t see them anymore though. I guess they left? ” “Hikers, maybe, ” I said. “Could be a trail out behind those trees. Might not hurt to take a look later. ” “Yeah! That’d be cool! ” James looked like he wanted to go investigate right that instant but I think he realized that I wasn’t up for that. Not at the moment at least. “Let’s head back inside, kiddo. Help Mom with the unpacking. ” “Yes Dad! ” James took off immediately and I kept hold of Evan who squirmed a bit. He didn’t want to be carried anymore but he also didn’t want to be dropped. I made it a few steps back towards the house before I caught myself looking back at the treeline too. I didn’t see anything in there. Nothing out of the ordinary at least aside from a bit of litter. Maybe it could’ve been a hiking trail. I suppose that would have explained the litter. I looked at the styrofoam tray in my hand and hoped that this wasn’t going to be a regular occurrence. Moving everything out of the truck took most of the day and it was mostly the movers, myself and Lauren who were doing the work. We worked until mid evening putting the beds back together and making them fit to sleep on before we all conked out. Lauren was asleep the moment her head touched the pillow. I kissed her on the forehead but she was too out to notice. She was beautiful, even if she was exhausted. Her messy ginger hair sprawled out around her and the look on her face was so peaceful. You could definitely see the Italian in her and she’d passed it on to our children. James and Evan both had her aquiline nose. Just looking at them reminded me of her and how much I adored everything about her. I was pretty drained too and left her to rest as I changed into my pajamas when I heard a familiar scratch at my bedroom door. That would be Buck, wanting my attention. I supposed it was a good thing that the move hadn’t altered Bucks evening schedule. It was 9. The kids were in bed. That meant it was time to pee. I opened my bedroom door and was greeted by the tappy paws of a happy Buck as he spun in an eager circle so I could lead him to the promised land. “Same bat time, same bat channel, huh buddy? ” I asked playfully. Buck didn’t reply as he was an adorable dog and thus (unfortunately) not capable of human speech. Still, he eagerly followed me to the back door. The sun was setting. The pinkish sky was slipping away into nighttime and there was a whole yard full of places he’d never peed on before. A world of endless new places on which to freely piss and shit without regard for the norms of society. I opened the door and watched as Buck darted out into the yard. I could hear his tag jingling and with the dog and his bladder unleashed upon Morton Coopers roses, I retired to the kitchen to get myself a glass of water. The house was so peaceful, and yet it had lost none of its charm. I imagined the life my family and I would live in there. I imagined watching James and Evan grow. This would be a good place for that. I imagined my life with Lauren… God I loved her. You never really understand how much you can love somebody until you actually fall in love. Then BAM. It hits you and every little thing they do delights you. It’s strange yet intoxicating in the best way possible. I felt sleepy and got lost way too quickly in my own daydreams. I might have almost dozed off in the kitchen. I figured that Buck would bark for my attention when he wanted to come in so I wasn’t worried. I’m not sure how long I stood there for, but Buck never barked. It was a while before I noticed and at that point I set down my mostly empty glass of water and went to investigate. I figured that maybe he was busy sniffing around or something like that. Everything was still fairly new to him. Peeking through the window into the backyard, I expected to see him. I saw nothing. I opened the door and stepped outside, figuring that maybe Buck was just behind something. Everything was good, right? “Buck? ” I called. Nothing in response. No jingle of his tags as he ran towards me. No bark in response. Nothing. “BUCK!? ” Still nothing. This wasn’t like Buck. Buck was a good dog! He was a smart dog! He always came when he was called, he was great with the kids, we’d trained him really well! He knew better than this! “Buck?! ” There was a slight panic starting to take hold in me. My bare feet touched the damp grass as I stepped out into the garden. There was no sound other than the gently running water. Something wasn’t right. Oh no, on the contrary something was very, very wrong and it didn’t sit well with me. I shifted uneasily, looking around and listening for the telltale sound of Buck running to me. There was nothing. No sound. Nothing at all. Slowly, I made my way out towards the treeline. I listened just in case that dog came running. He didn’t. I stared into the trees ahead of me, looking through the dark for some sign of Buck. I could hear movement. A low rustling amongst the brush but I saw nothing. “Buck! ” I called again. “BUCK!? ” The rustling stopped. For just a moment, I thought I saw movement. Something in the darkness turned and I could’ve sworn I saw two shining pinpricks of light in the darkness. Bucks eyes? No… No, thes
They never never ever dissapointed me. Fantastic in every way.

She's unbelievably Beautiful. Ordinary love u2 lyrics. U2 ordinary love. Happy 2020 everybody. Here for my yearly listen. Ordinary lover. Ordinary love john legend. Ordinary lovely. Ordinary Love is a really surprising film. It's by no means a perfect film but it is a really enjoyable film with emotion done well without feeling too over the top especially for a cancer film.
Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville are really great here. They really do carry this film. Since it is primarily focused on these two characters and pretty much no one else. Liam Neeson is really great here and it makes me wonder why he hasn't done more action films. Overall it's a very simple told very effectively. It does have a lot emotion and it really does work especially the ending. But it's definitely worth watching.
Ordinary love lyrics. Strange decision to release this just before Christmas, but is very absorbing. The relationship described is convincing and the emotions as the cancer theme develops, raw and realistic. The two leads are excellent, but this is a Lesley Manville's film, I would say. She should get nominated for something. It is hard to think of a major actress with a wider range. Me faz lembrar de uma pessoa que me ensinou a amar o Bono. Ti amo Alien. Warning: Mild Spoilers for Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, as well as its second season Against All Odds. In a Discord server I mod, one of the bots has an option to gamble with a virtual currency. You gain coins by scoring in a coveted top-three spot for any given artist. The gambling is limited to a single channel, fittingly called #gambling-den, and while at the start I have observed people gambling some of this fake currency, lately it’s full of users simply gambling “all”. I don’t have the channel muted, even though I should have, and I like to gamble all as well - just to see myself lose. Every time I return to the channel - not that this happens worryingly often, simply once in a while - I gamble with the intent of losing everything I got. Maybe this time, I tell myself, I will quit for good. Maybe this time, I will learn my lesson. After all, everything should be in moderation, and I always lose with these things (I was thinking of the gambling moments in the designated city in Pokémon games), and anyway, gambling is haram. Yet I never mute the channel, and I feel a low current in myself, the tip of a dynamite ready to spark: a sliver of a hope to raise the white numbers on a black background. A fuse kicks off when I do, and a cold wind blows out my flame when I don’t. Tough luck, I tell myself. Maybe next time. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, and its successor Kaiji: Against All Odds tap into this vague rush of luck and unfold it into its extremes: innocuous games develop to sprawling plans of strategy and a deathly corrosion of empathy and selfishness; debt-riddled characters, beginning from the protagonist Itou Kaiji, that put their hope into said games, regardless what happens to their minds and bodies; and lastly, the owners of the devious games that enjoy the sight that presents itself. You could watch Kaiji and thank God your sense of gambling isn’t as severe as his -- but you could also watch Kaiji and see a millennial suffering through the uncaring systems of this world. The first thing we know of twenty-one-year old Kaiji is that he’s just lost a gamble among friends. “The future is in our hands”, doubling both as opening title and poster in Kaiji’s single-room apartment, quickly unhinges on one side as if it sensed the viewer’s presence or realized the sheer crookedness of this statement. The narrator quickly adds with a grave voiceover that Kaiji lives in Tokyo for three years, hasn’t been employed since New Years, and that he is a bum. He spends his money on beer and gambles and likes to hang stolen emblems of foreign cars like trophies to be won in order to release the pent-up resentment. “Anyone who drives this car can’t be a good person, anyway, ” Kaiji says with a petty smile on his face, but moments later, the reality of his situation crushes him: “It’s all about money, ” he mutters, lying on the ground while a silent tear runs over his cheeks. Seasoned loan shark Endou pays Kaiji a visit moments to remind him of a debt he cosigned, its crushing interest raising it to unmanageable levels, all of which Kaiji has to pay for alone now. The only way out of it is to enter a ship named Espoir (French for “hope”), alongside an accompanying game: it will either clear his debt or put him into underground work for a year or two. Kaiji seems against it - he won’t pay the debt, and to hell with the ship. But Endou is quick to remind him that the worst possible outcome is to continue living like he does. The cruise could be a great opportunity to rid of this “loser” mentality that Kaiji has: his resignation to this life, as unhappy as it is. After all, the things Kaiji wants are always behind display cases, and could he ever think of buying the foreign cars he likes to mutilate? “You’ve given up from the beginning and are satisfied by the little pranks you play, ” Endou says as a choir and organs wail dramatically behind him. “If you had ten million, would you do shit like that? Of course you wouldn’t! ” Kaiji grunts, all too aware that Endou is right. Must be funny in the rich man’s world, ABBA have aptly sung in Money Money Money. almost four decades ago. Kaiji spends two seasons proving them right. Early on in the first arc and in the game provided in the ship -- an adult men’s card game involving stars, money, a ticking clock, and rock-paper-scissors -- Kaiji mentions the desire to be better multiple times. “Once we get out of here, ” he says, “let’s turn our life around. Let’s really try our best. ” The game itself requires a hand of luck or the confidence to make his own choice, but as Kaiji fails to have either -- his cunning is reserved for self-interest at the morally purest level, and he’d rather have someone else choose for him -- he’s quickly scammed by the sly Funai. Kaiji finds himself two new friends to survive the game with, convinced that they wouldn’t betray him, and determined to get all three out of the ship hell or high water. The early winners enjoy the game from above with champagne flutes and stars pinned on their chest; the early losers find themselves doomed behind the game room, stripped bare both literally and mentally, dubbed as “hell” by both Kaiji and the narrator. As the four-hour time and card counters tick down ominously, an uneasy, tense electricity passes through the viewer and Kaiji’s face, which usually alternates between a worried face slick with sweat or wet with tears. To win three stars each for the three with a limited amount of cards and money proves itself a tightrope act, requiring Kaiji to plan on the fly as they are thwarted over and over. It comes as little surprise that the visual metaphors in this show usually revolve around abysses, darknesses, lighthouses, and bridges; red, violet, and blue swirls of dark thoughts and evil intent; monstrous hands that claw and pull at the characters; stretches of zawa, translated as “uneasy atmosphere”. Kaiji stops mentioning this elusive better life in progressing episodes, more focused on friendships and winning for their sake, but he doesn’t deny others of their dreams: in the climax of the first arc as well as one of its tensest moments, Kaiji hears the calls of a teary-eyed man and saves him from the literal hell that awaits him. Ironically, it is preceded by a betrayal of the earlier mentioned friends. The show is about as subtle about its observations on capitalism as a sledgehammer flying your way. The ultimate antagonist is Hyoudou, an old and rich conglomerate head who admits he likes to see poor people like Kaiji struggle, that the only form of sincerity is in the face of crushing debt and pain; two henchmen act as players opposite Kaiji, both in season one and season two; the second season’s first game plays out in a prison for debtors, its second in a casino run by the conglomerate, while the Espoir is a sponsored affair. The second card game involves slaves that can win against emperors; a character aptly surmises that the poor don’t care about overthrowing the system, simply about being rich themselves. Kaiji has a difficult relationship with society, leading him to unemployment, but he needs to have money somehow. Unsurprisingly, he circles back to gambling, and back into the conglomerate’s hands. But there’s also Kaiji’s fellow debtors that work against him, equal in Kaiji in every way barring their moral stance: while Kaiji will think of a collective - two losers that could help him out on a ship, say, or a group of workers that owe the local kingpin money - these debtors are driven by a selfish sense of survival. Empathy, kindness, and respect: these are the coordinates that Kaiji operates in such high-risk situations, rewarded by men that believe in Kaiji’s good graces and help him the best they can. However, these virtues are juxtaposed with Kaiji’s vice to simply win: a gamble involving tissues that he thinks of on the fly; an accusation of theft that Kaiji seizes as opportunity to offer a gamble; the pachinko game that nobody can beat. “The fucking pigs that thought of this system, where everyone is taken advantage of, are laughing their asses off. The more we think about loss and gain, the more obsessed we become, the more we play into these fuckers’ hands! ” Kaiji shouts; the next episode, he regrets that he’s helped out anyone to begin with; the episode after that, he starts crying at the prospect of (literally) pushing aside someone to win. By the second season, he actively begs for a new gamble, anything to rid of his broke state and clear his debts as swiftly as possible. He’s led by vague beliefs of reaching for the stars, but a moment later the narrator flips around the hopeful image: “Kaiji is back into the darkness of gambling, where the light of stars never reach. ” But in the darkness, he finds the light of fellow men, ultimately able to dispel the fog for even a single moment. “Kaiji, fated to lose, loses; Hyoudou, fated to win, wins, ” recaps the narrator in the second season. It’s crucial that only Hyoudou is mentioned here; as much as capitalism favors companies that own as much as possible as fast as possible, there is always a single man behind the company, the ruler over the rulers. We like to think of this singular owner in order to relay it to us, to give ourselves motivation and despair both; this trick involving carrots and sticks is one frequently brought up in the show as well, by the people that think they can claim a part of capitalism’s cake. Tonegawa admonishes Kaiji until the game turns in on him, calling him trash and belittling his ability to strategize. He berates another character, Sahara, for even asking more than a fake ticket meaning nothing: “Whether you’re a salaryman or a bureaucrat, everyone is risking their lives for money! ” The show makes no illusions on ordinary life: to work up, suck up to people they dislike, and barely save with money - that the characters that are racked up with de
