Spoilers: Rey - she was clearly built up to turn to the dark side. Everything from her erratic fighting style, proneness to anger, betrayal of Finn, and bloodline pointed directly to her turning evil. It made sense because it would complete her arc of becoming selfish (her parents as the original reason) with all the detractors of goodness getting in the way (luke, herself, the resistance, Finn, and Kylo. This was very interesting and for some reason just completely forgotten because Leia died? Kylo/Ben - so, he is not a good character throughout the trilogy. He's shown to be an angry kid but also conflicted but also angry and it just bounced back and forth between the movies. Well, in the first 2 acts of this movie, the anger is abandoned and he's merely conflicted. This is a good thing and I liked how they were teasing his redemption. The problem is that he turns good when Rey regresses back to good. This completely ruins the contrast of the two, and without that dynamic there is no conflict in either of the characters. Without a conflict, it's boring. Even the writers sensed that because he doesn't show back up from the end of the 2nd act until the last 20 minutes of the damn movie. It's actually like 40 minutes where he's not in the movie. This arc is managed very poorly, and so reduces its satisfaction. While the arc is theoretically good, it was badly done. His trajectory was clearly to turn good and kill Rey after she turned evil and took over palpatine as emperess. It's even in the title of the movie "rise of Skywalker. They botched this. Finn - Finn is uninteresting. His only fun aspect is his comedic dynamic with Poe. His arc in the first movie was botched and inconsistent. He left the first order because he didn't like conflict. He then wanted to leave Rey because he wanted no conflict. The superficial arc was that he ignored the prospect of conflict and went for Rey regardless of conflict. He sort of got rid of his aversion to conflict, but being that his motivations were purely romantic for Rey, it makes him come off as selfish rather than good. Even if you think about that, the "aversion to conflict" is not intrinsically bad, it's only bad because it indicates selfishness. His romantic interest for Rey still constituted as an expression of selfishness. He had no arc. His flaw was just redirected. However, in the last Jedi, he did have an arc. He turned from that selfish Rey-centric mindset into an altruistic resistance hero. He should have died by sacraficing himself like he was planning to do, but that was botched even more. His arc of selfishness to selflessness was completed. In this movie, he completely regresses back to Rey-centric selfishness. As SOON as he saw Rey indicate evil, which she explicitly did to him like 3 times, he should have teamed up with Kylo to kill her. That was the whole point of the last movie. But of course he regresses and since that tool of Rey turning evil is abandoned, which was gonna be used to strengthen his arc, he actually becomes entirely irrelevant. He doesn't serve any purpose and his character is nothing. Another botched character. Poe - so the flaw with Poe is that he is too trigger happy. He is so driven for goodness that he becomes shortsighted and ignores potential repercussions to his hyper-altruistic actions. There is no way either of the first two movies challenge this part of his character. He literally encounters no conflict. His character undergoes no change. All of that being said, the last movie gives a glimpse of a potential resolution to this flaw. An old romantic partner of his shows up and helps create the best scene in the movie where they talk about their past and potentially leaving together. This gives Poe some dynamicity and offers Poe an alternative to his harmful selflessness. She could have been a foil for him, making him more mature and considerate. However, this is also abandoned, and I am frustrated more. That all being said, the story was very fun here. I liked the plot and the design of the main conflict, I just think it was poorly weaved with all of the characters' arcs. I just wish Hollywood would start making movies character oriented again rather than action oriented. Even marvel movies weave the two well enough. The sequel trilogy has not.

When will Hollywood learn not to play this political game. They killed off the good characters (happen to be white males of course) and just filled the movie with as much political left stuff as possible. I watch Star Wars to not be reminded of politics. Instead I just got thrown down my throat lies. Remember in the end no white dudes survive from the good side and all evil people are white men. Stick to cartoons Disney and stop with this political crap.
