A történet szerint sokévi távollét után visszatér szülőhazájába William Wallace skót nemes. Zord idők járnak akkoriban arrafelé: a király utód nélkül halt meg és Anglia királya megszerezte magának a skót koronát is. Wallace a maroknyi lázadó csapat élére áll. Bátorsága, szenvedélye és lelkiereje példát mutat honfitársainak. Eközben találkozik Muronnal, gyermekkori játszótársával és szerelemre lobban a szép lány iránt. Óriási közönsége van, hiszen van benne kaland, akció, dráma, de még romantika is, mindamellett, hogy történelmi mozinak készült.
