Play Chapter seven of Ashfall is live! In which we have a little bit more smut (and probably more after this) before we get back to your regularly scheduled volcanic bull shit ?? ? @reylofic @thereylowritingden @reylofanficclub @housereysistance @house-crylo @houseswolo @houseplaidam @housedadam I dont know whether Im disgusted or disappointed that selfish people exist. Who in their right fucking mind would want raise the prices of goods/products that are severely needed by people who could potentially be in danger? This is the kind of shit that makes me feel disgusted/disappointed with my own people. C'mon, do you really have to take advantage of the situation just so you could earn money? Are you seriously creating a business out of this to gain profit? That shits just nasty. Im glad this is being taken care of, but I hope those people learn that this is not something that should be taken advantage of nor something that should be used to gain profit for. Heres the link to read the full article: To all my mutuals/followers/following who lives in the Philippines and are affected by the ash fall from Taal Volcano, I hope you guys stays safe! Ashfall by @Mike_Mullen Its official, this blog is going to every other week (with the occasional bonus blog. Why? I have a job! I just dont have the time to read an extra book a week AND figure out how to be a librarian in the real world. Ill try to do as many as I can though! Anyway, growing up about four hours from Yellowstone, I remember learning that its basically a giant, dormant volcano. When I was nine I actually lost sleep on occasion because I was convinced that it would explode and render my home and family into tiny bits of ash. Mike Mullen has taken my childhood nightmare and made it into a book. Our hero, Alex, decided to stay home while his family heads off to visit his grandparents. The next thing he knows, theres ash falling from the sky and coating everything in sight. Before long, chaos reigns, and the only thing Alex can think to do is to try to find his family. What was a four-hour drive becomes much longer when youre just a kid with a bike. Tragedy brings out the best and the absolute worst in other people, and Alex has to do his best. In the vein of books like Life as We Knew It, Ashfall made me count my non-perishable food. Alex is smart and resourceful, and its great to see a boy character use his brain? to solve problems. He meets his match in Darla, and its nice to see them alternately work together and challenge each other in their struggle for survival. Overall, its a heartbreaking adventure, and I even lean towards hoping it makes its way into classes. Theres a lot of morality, ethics, and science here. That makes for more than a few good discussion topics. Highly recommended, but this isnt a book for the sensitive children. Also, why are so many fictional boys named Alex? As far as dystopic trilogies go, Ashfall is so underrated, it makes me sad Ubusan ang mga face masks huhuhu dumaan akong Miniso at Watsons pero sold out na raw. Buti dumaan ako sa department store at nakuha yung last 2 face masks na hindi disposable. Mga tatlong beses din ako napuwing habang naglalakad pauwi sa unit huhuhu be safe, people! I never would have guessed that matches and lighters would be among the things Id miss the most if civilization collapsed Ashen Winter (Ashfall #2. Mike Mullin tbh it might already have a ship name but if it doesnt, can we call chaol/aedion: ashfall. thats hella rad imho The bio dept of my university released this in light of the Taal exploding. Transcript: You must have already seen the impressive ash plume emitted by the Taal Volcano yesterday afternoon. Several advisories have already been released warning about the health impacts of the ashfall ? and we hope you are taking all precautions and keeping safe indoors! On campus, our usually bright and green vegetation is covered by a thin layer of volcanic ash. This photo of a Bitaog (Calophyllum inophyllum) leaf was taken by Cherie Alfiler along the pedestrian walk from Gate 3. 5 today. The once glossy leaves are dull, dusted with a light sprinkling of volcanic ash. Ashfall not only affects human health, it also has implications on vegetation and other wildlife. Ash can cover the surface of leaves, minimizing photosynthesis. If the ashfall is heavy, the weight of the deposit can also physically damage the plants. In addition, volcanic ash can also affect water and soil chemistry, so imagine what ashfall can do to affected agricultural areas! Clister Pangantihon took samples from the 5th floor of the PLDT-CTC Building and looked at the ash under the microscope. You can see the hard and jagged edges of the particles, a mixture of rock fragments, glass, and other minerals. This should help us understand why even just a light deposit of ash can cause a lot of damage. Bees and other nectar feeding animals can accidentally ingest the ash along with pollen, and because their guts are thin, the ash particles can cause fatal lacerations. How has the ashfall been in your areas? Keep abreast of advisories and stay safe. Thanks Cherie and Clister for sharing your ashfall photos! Lets all say a prayer for our affected countrymen and hope for the best! Just in case this does become popular, External image I need to go back and reread ashfall omfg Ashfall: A hyperdense city created after a volcanic eruption which blocked out the sun, reducing air quality drastically and limiting the growth of plants. People constructed ways of purifying air and synthetically growing plants as a means of survival within their community. The city has little to no streets, only dark, often unmaintained halls that only get worse the farther you go towards the bottom-center of the city. Genetic engineering has become popular in tailoring children and mechanical prosthetics have become a fashion trend. Some people receive the butt-end of these self customizations and are pushed away as rejects, forced to live in the dark understories of the city. What exists of the story follows the characters belonging to me, Horus and a friend that goes by the name Vex;u ashfall was in the new season of spirit riding free I dont know that sorry cuts it. ” She strode back to me, kicking through the snow. “As it happens, I only volunteered to be a camp prostitute. Less of a person? Just one of those girls, the easy ones, the ones the high-school cliques gossip about and call sluts? Is that the kind of boy you are, Alex? Is that the kind of man you want to be? Ashfall by Mike Mullin @nabesima moving this to a new post so as not to clog peoples dashes. Just to warn I kinda start to ramble after a while but… further thoughts on Ashfall and the weird ecological conundrum that is the scorched forest below. Your hatred of the canon map is shared. Working on a better one as we speak. I completely agree that Ashfall cannot possibly be 100% burning hell pit. Plus my Southern Hemisphere headcanon puts the place fairly close to the South Pole which means cold wet winters and mild dry summers. Also rain shadow effect from the mountains means a very wet, very green side of the wastes and a dryer more barren side that transitions nicely into the shifting expanse. re Northern California?? Moving back to scorched forest mess. Pine forests are a common thing since pines grow quickly and very well in cooler alpine situations and again volcanic soil doesnt hurt either. Whats a natural part of a healthy pine forest ecosystem? The occasional forest fire of course. Fueled by fire magic and other bullshit, it helps rejuvenate the forest and keep things healthy. During a burn, all the lovely fire spirits and animals we see in the coli come out. Otherwise its mostly the nature and ice aligned creatures who also live in the area.? On to the centaurs. Im saying the Wintermanes and company came over from the Southern Icefield perhaps via some sort of third age ice bridge which has since melted away (again thanks Flamecaller) once the effects of magical climate change became evident it was too late to move and they were boxed into their seasonally fiery home (by dragons, lava flows, what have you) just by how close they are one can surmise that black sand annex and the fortress of ends were once similar in climate meaning that it wouldve made sense for centaurs to migrate there in search of more livable conditions or fleeing enemies etc. headcannon that ashfall got his scar when he got into an argument with his mother and his mom slashed him in the face Ashfall External image This is seriously one of the best books that depict an apocalypse that I have read. One of the main reasons that I loved it so much was because it could happen. Any day. It could happen when we least expect it. Well, anything that involves some catastrophic environmental event. Ashfall shocked me in so many levels. A lot of that had to do with it just seemed so realistic in so many ways. How people will find it hard to find food, how some people will kill others in order to get food… Basically some people will lose their sense of humanity, which something terribly sad.? One of the scenes that really shocked me did not happen to Alex and Darla, the main characters. Alex and Darla help a mother and her thre

Ashfall Book Trailer Ashfall? is the first book of the Ashfall Trilogy. It revolves around a rebellious teenager, Alex Halprin, trying to make his way across Iowa in order to reach his uncle's farm to regroup with his family after the Yellowstone volcano erupts, causing his town to plunge into ruin and despair. Along the way, he encounters a devoted farmer, Darla Edmunds, with whom he travels as they brave and improvise in a perilous world gone mad. Sypnosis Edit Many visitors to Yellowstone National Park dont realize that the boiling hot springs and spraying geysers are caused by an underlying supervolcano, so large that the caldera can only be seen by plane or satellite. And by some scientific measurements, it could be overdue for an eruption. For Alex, being left alone for the weekend means having the freedom to play computer games and hang out with his friends without hassle from his mother. Then the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, plunging his hometown into a nightmare of darkness, ash, and violence. Alex begins a harrowing trek to seach for his family and finds help in Darla, a travel partner he meets along the way. Together they must find the strength and skills to survive and outlast an epic disaster. Community content is available under CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted.

S. National Natural Landmark Designated 2006 The Ashfall Fossil Beds of Antelope County in northeastern Nebraska are rare fossil sites of the type called lagerstätten that, due to extraordinary local conditions, capture a moment in time ecological "snapshot" in a range of well-preserved fossilized organisms. Ash from a Yellowstone hotspot eruption 10-12 million years ago created these fossilized bone beds. The site is protected as Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, a 360-acre (150?ha) park that includes a visitor center with interpretive displays and working fossil preparation laboratory, and a protected ongoing excavation site, the Hubbard Rhino Barn, featuring fossil Teleoceras (native hippo-like ancestral rhinoceros) and ancestral horses. [2] The Ashfall Fossil Beds are especially famous for fossils of mammals from the middle Miocene geologic epoch. The Ashfall Fossil Beds are stratigraphically part of the Serravallian -age [3] Ogallala Group. Bruneau-Jarbidge event [ edit] The Ashfall deposit preserves the fossilized remains of ancient animals that perished in a dense volcanic ash fall which occurred during the late Miocene, approximately 12?million years ago; the animals had come to a waterhole seeking relief. The fall of ash drifted downwind from the Bruneau-Jarbidge supervolcano eruption (in present-day Idaho) nearly 1, 000 miles (1, 600?km) west of the Ashfall site. A large number of very well preserved fossil Teleoceras (extinct hippo-like relatives of rhinos) small three-toed and one-toed horses, camels, and birds have been excavated. Many animals were preserved with their bones articulated; one rhino still bears her unborn fetus, while others retain the contents of their last meal. The bones of the animals show features that indicate that the animals died of lung failure induced by inhaling volcanic ash. The smaller animals with smaller lung capacity were the first to die, and the larger animals were the last. Bite-marks on some bones show that local predators (the carnivorous bone-crunching dog Aelurodon) scavenged some of the carcasses, but no predator remains have yet surfaced. There are also abundant clues to the region's ecology, indicating a savanna of grassland interspersed with trees that luxuriated in a warmer, milder climate than today's. The rapidly accumulating ash, windblown into deep drifts at low places like the waterhole site, remained moderately soft. The ash preserved the animals in three dimensions; not even the delicate bones of birds or the carapaces of turtles were crushed. Above the layer of ash, a stratum of more erosion-resistant sandstone has acted as "caprock" to preserve the strata beneath. Paleontologists working on the site Preservation [ edit] The first hint of the site's richness was the skull of a juvenile rhinoceros noticed in 1971 eroding out of a gully at the edge of a cornfield. In 1971, University of Nebraska State Museum paleontologist Michael Voorhies was walking with his wife Jane through a series of gullies on Melvin Colsons farm in northeastern Nebraska and made this discovery. [4] The Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation purchased the Ashfall site in 1986. [5] Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park opened in 1991. [4] The site was declared a National Natural Landmark on May 9, 2006. [6] The park's Hubbard Rhino Barn opened in 2009. The 17, 500-square-foot (1, 630?m 2) pavilion lets visitors observe as paleontologists carry out excavations of new discoveries exactly where the fossilized remains lie preserved. [7] Specially constructed walkways afford visitors an unobstructed close-up view of paleontologists at work during the summer field season. Species [ edit] The remains of Teleoceras are so numerous and concentrated that the main section of Ashfall is called the "Rhino Barn. Other fossils at the "Rhino Barn" include the remains of horses and camels. [8] Taxa discovered in the Ashfall deposits include: five genera of horse: Cormohipparion, Protohippus, Pseudhipparion, Neohipparion and Pliohippus three genera of camelids: Procamelus, Aepycamelus and Protolabis three genera of canids: Leptocyon, Cynarctus and evidence of scavenging from a bone-crushing canid, possibly Aelurodon one genus of rhinoceros: Teleoceras one genus of saber-toothed deer: Longirostromeryx three bird species: crowned crane ( Balearica exigua) a rail, and Apatosagittarius (a Miocene hawk resembling the now living secretarybird) two species of turtle: Hesperotestudo and pond turtle [8] See also [ edit] Gray Fossil Site List of fossil sites (with link directory) Pipe Creek Sinkhole References [ edit] External links [ edit] Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park University of Nebraska State Museum Ashfall Fossil Beds Skeleton Map University of Nebraska State Museum.

Nako po ash fall na! Tawagin na natin si Quiboloy para ma Stop na. Continuing We had three groups of demo wire: mine adit, ANFO on the mine floor, and just because, some black powder placed into the old, but unused, drill holes in the mine face. The party room was going to be detonated remotely. We decided to blow the face first, then the ANFO, then the adit. After the applause died down, Id trigger the party room. Then, the final drinking light for this mine site would be lit. Tomorrow, we pack up and travel south. But first! “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to your first abandoned mine demolition. This hole in the ground has become a menace, alas, through no fault of its own. But steps must be taken to remove it as a threat to society; to protect society from itself. Ill let you cogitate over the irony of that statement at your leisure. Please, folks. This once was the provider of many a familys daily bread, butter, and beer. A moment of silence. A moment of reverence. A moment of reflection. This is the place where you cut your subsurface teeth, where you lost your mining virginity, and now…were really gonna pop yer cherry! ” They laughed! They actually laughed loud and long. I was amazed. This was just my B-list material. Dr. D and I alternated countdowns, Lucas was manning the detonators. Everybody, even the cooks, dish machine operators, and custodians joined in on the Safety Protocol song. First went the face/black powder. A loud, rolling BOOM followed by the mine blowing a huge white smoke ring skyward. Not bad for a first shot. Then the ANFO. Lucas needed to use the recently acquired replacement for Ol Reliable, my personal plunger-actuated blasting machine, as we needed the voltage and amperage. The ANFO shook everyone in camp, even set those in suspended hammocks rocking. “Were over a half-mile from the mine and you can actually here see the effects of low-explosives. ”, I said, regarding the swinging hammocks. “Did the Earth move for you, too? ” Even that got a laugh. Next came the mine adit itself. The sharp cracks of the dynamite were so distinctly different than the rolling thrump of the ANFO. People were getting a good physical demonstration of the differences in different types of explosives. Everyone was about to clap, hoot, or holler, and head for the bar or leave when I shouted them down. “What are you doing? Where are you going? Were not done here yet, folks. We have a little bonus. Relax, sit back, and enjoy the death of the cess-pit. The end of the fetid party room. The cessation of the sewer some people around here went to have fun. Want fun? What could possibly be more fun than over 100 pounds of Torpex, PETN, RDX, Dynamite and Kinestik binary high explosives…and a remote detonator? ” All eyes one me grew three sizes that day. “And Im prepared to offer the honor of pressing the big, shiny red button to…the highest bidder! ” Consternation and grumbling. “Actually, I kid. Before this, I had given a slip of paper to Dr. D. On that paper is a number, between 1 and 100. Here are some official guessing paper and pencils. The paper was recently outsourced from the DOI, so no fair trying to use any other. Now, write your guess down, a single number, between 1 and 100, one guess per participant. The closest gets the remote detonator and the honor of destroying the den of filth. In the case of prizes, duplicate ties will be awarded. You have 2 minutes before my number will be revealed. GO! ” Five minutes later, Dr. D announces the winner. There were no duplicates and my number was 86. I from Berkeley was the winner. She was a petite little hydrogeologist with a mean streak a mile wide. She grinned like a maniac when I handed her the remote detonator. She wanted to go immediately, but I restrained her for a 5 count. “5. 4…3…2…1…HIT IT! ” Whoa. Even though the mine was strictly closed, when that Torpex torpedo went off, the whole state probably felt it. It was very much like an earthquake. A very noisy, even that far underground in a closed-off mine, shatteringly brilliant earthquake. I was ecstatic. “I did that? ” “Yes, you did. Youll be receiving the bill in the mail. ” I joshed. It didnt matter. Nothing could dampen the mood at that point. Before lighting the drinking lamp, I recited a bit of doggerel for the crowd to close and commemorate our first victorious mine closing. ? “The Earth shakes, the ground cracks, ? And out steps fmax. ? Pleased as punch, fresh as a daisy, ? He watches while the world goes crazy. ? Strata shakes, structures tumble, ? Seismographs jump, formations crumble. ? When hes finished, spent with sin, ? He returns as fmin. ” (fmax refers to the high-frequency band-limitation of the radiated field of earthquakes. Its a geology thing… They seemed to appreciate the effort. They loved that immediately afterward I lit the evening drinking lamp. D, Lucas, and my own self had our cigars, drink, and maps. We were looking for our next contestant. Given the reaction of the crowd, I figured theyd be ready for something a little more ‘aggressive. We had 11 days left, so it couldnt be too far afield, as I didnt want to waste time in transit, but here in Nevada, that wasnt going to present a problem. Lucas pointed out the Gobblers Knob mining area. It was studded with mines marked with the red ‘X of the Bureau indicating these mines had been vetted for critter populations and were slated for demolition, and there was quite the assortment. Sure, it was a good three and a half hours distant as a direct shot, or a full day for this crowd. However, we could just camp there for the last part of the trip; it would make a fine base camp. There were more than enough mines, in close proximity, of all types. So, it was decided and announced. Wed all rendezvous at the titular Gobblers Knob gold mine area. Id scout the area with Lucas and Dr. D, who would follow in his field car. Wed find a place to set up base camp. Sure, it was a diversion from the planned itinerary of the project, but that was at my discretion anyways. Given the shakedown at the Sharp Curve mine, we figure the less over-the-road travel for this crowd, the better. I chatted with the concessionaires and explained our new plans. They were relieved, as once settled, they wouldnt have to tear down and set up again every few days. We would be relatively closer to some larger cities, so they could assure us to continue the high quality of food and drink. So, we were set. Lucas asked to ride with me and since he didnt mind my cigars, so long as I shared. So Dr. D, in his rental field vehicle, and Lucas and I in the Hummer, hit the trail first. Wed be there in three or so hours. Real geologists dont get lost out in the field, they just become slightly temporarily dislocated. Not to waste any time, I had Lucas get on the radio and relate our plans to the Bureau. After this, he called the Nevada State Troopers and let them know what we were up to as well; just in case, as insurance. He called the local police in the town of Goonhaven, NV to warn them that we were on the way. They were most appreciative. They liked geologists and miners. They even gave us the address and phone number of the towns single liquor store. We had a radiotelephone lash up through the Bureau HF radio, so I had Lucas call the Boozerama and advise them well need a lot of clear ice for the catering guys. Plus they might just want to go ahead and lay in a double, ok, triple supply of beer as theres a gaggle of thirsty pseudogeologists on the way that are going to hang around for a week or more. I asked them if they had any Russian Imperial Export vodka. They said they had some, but a good variety and supply of other brands. I thanked them and warned them again, that the geologists were coming. I also requested that they source some Bitter Lemon and a few cases of assorted Nehi flavors. They said they would try. Always nice to phone ahead and give ample warning. Elicits discounts. Lucas was a natural as a navigator. “OK, Rock. Stay on the goat path until you hit Big Barn rock. Take a left and head up to Copperhead Canyon. Once past the canyon, go right on past Nellies Nipple and follow the arroyo. Once you pass Snigglers Gulch, hang a right and another right and well be on the road to Gobblers Knob. ” I lowered my polychromic safety squints in place and said: “Roads? Where were going, we dont need roads”. I dropped the Hummer into low, stomped the gas, and leaped out across the desert; the trailer with nearly a ton of high explosives bouncing jauntily behind us. Lucas started to protest, thought better of it, got us both a cold drink out of the back seat, just sat, white-knuckled it as he watched the desert fly by. We made great time as we averaged some 60 miles per hour over the flat, rocky desert. Well, maybe not average, but we did hit 60 mph until Lucas got too alarmed and worried feverishly over the trailer full of boom that was fast on our tails. We pulled into the ghost town of the main Gobblers Knob camp. It was a large, open area up in the mountains. We got out and began our photoreconnaissance. There was a lot of antique mining equipment and paraphernalia up here. Looks like we were either too high up in the middle of nowhere or perhaps the locals didnt care enough to brave the route up to the camp area. It was as close to pristine as one could get in the region. It really looked like with a little spit and polish, one could fire up the mines once again. The Gobblers Knob mining district covers an area of approximately 30 square miles in the Grunion Range in Nevada. Gold was discovered in the Gobblers Knob district in 1905, although quartz veins in the vicinity of the ‘Knob had been worked as early as 1866. The district immediately became one of the bigger "boom camps" of Nevada. The greatest production was reached in 1931, and since that time mining has declined until it was abandoned in the early 1940s. Place

Thank you Doc Willie at Doc Lisa. Hey friends! I've been reading more since joining this group and love all the discussions and recommendations! There are specific movies and books that scratch my itch and I was wondering if you had any gems to share! So, I really like scenarios where the protagonist is suddenly in the middle of: an apocalypse (zombie, natural disaster, what have you) or being hunted/haunted by a monster/supernatural forces. The protagonist does not necessarily have a gun or military experience and a lot of survival is scavenging, barricading, using their brains and sneaking around stealthily. Basically survival horror with less guns a-blazing. Like the beginning of 28 Days Later, or REC, A Quiet Place, The Silence, Bird Box. Just every day people caught in a bad situation. A good example I guess would be The Night Eats the World, where it's just the protagonist using his smarts and surroundings to survive and stay undetected ( sort of but he did have a gun. It's really exhilarating to think of "What Would I Do. It might be because I'm in Canada and it's harder to gain access to guns, so I just find these novels/films more relatable lol Some books I've read that sort of scratch this itch are: Last Days by Adam Nevill ( until the last chapter) Allison Hewitt is Trapped by Madeleine Roux (I LOVED the chapters in the bookstore) The Last One by Alexandra Oliva Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven (I am OBSESSED with the hotel chapter. Intensity by Dean Koontz No Exit by Taylor Adams Lots of YA books are similar such as Ashes by Ilsa J Bick, Ashfall by Mike Mullin, The Rain by Virginia Bergin. Do you have any faves or similar ones to recommend? Thanks in advance.

Alex starts off this book as a somewhat spoiled teenage boy. He refuses to go with his family on a trip to his uncle's farm. He wants to stay at home and play World of Warcraft and just flipping sulk. He doesn't have much sulking time though because something hits his house and crushes in the roof and sets the house on fire. That can get a teenager off his ass. Well, sometimes. We learn that the super volcano at Yellowstone has exploded. Don't go and Google that shit like I did. It will scare the... June 27, 2012 SUPERVOLCANO. I strongly recommend a visit to karen's fabulous review, which (along with her encouragement) got me interested in this gripping and realistic tale. AND! A SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE BY karen IS FEATURED IN THIS JOINT REVIEW! YAY! So here is what we are talking about. We will start with some science. Pic #1: Ashfall zones from known eruptions of the Yellowstone Supervolcano: Age. millions of years ago for the specific eruption. How likely is an eruption during our... For the first time ever, I felt ashamed of my species. The volcano had taken our homes, our food, our automobiles, and our airplanes, but it hadnt taken our humanity. No, wed given that up on our own. Being a teenager in a world covered with ashes is not easy at all. Alex discovered that after the eruption of a volcano in Yellowstone National Park. His parents and his little sister had left town just before the earth started to shake and Alex was left all alone in a burning house with no one... The first night after I started reading this book, I dreamt about being stuck in a house and hiding from some people while trying to survive/escape. All night. THAT, is a sign of a good book! This story is told in Alex's point of view. A huge volcano has erupted and they're now seeing and living the after effects. Which means a LOT of ash falling, incredible climate changes, and desperate food situations. I love that the book started right before the eruption. We got to live through it with Alex... 4. 5 stars Well, colour me surprised: I kind of love this book. Let me clarify that statement. I didnt expect to dislike it. I wouldnt have gone to the effort of procuring it (Ashfall is not available in Australia) if I didnt have a desire to read it. But my physical TBR pile is literally (view spoiler) big enough to do me an injury (albeit a minor one) if it fell on me, and somehow Ashfall repeatedly ended up on the bottom of that... Actual rating: 3. 5 stars I was really, really excited to read Ashfall. I've been devouring dystopian novels left and right recently. I'm always itching for my next fix. Seriously, I think I have a problem at this rate, I might just have to check myself into some sort of program. Ashfall is a bit different from the current slew of dystopian novels. For one thing, it is written from a male PoV. These seem to be in slow supply these days, sadly. Ashfall tells the story of 15 year-old Alex traveling... Great reread! COME ON MIKE, GIMME BLADES OF SPRING. SUCH a fantastic book. Well written, well researched, detailed but fast-paced, frightening and exciting. There were several times reading this where I was literally terrified of what was happening or what would happen next for Alex. I wasn't expecting much from Darla (I'm not a fan of the name, dunno why) but I warmed up to her quickly and they play off each other so well. The entire trip from Iowa to Illinois was never boring, and Mr... *This ARC was provided to me by the publishers. No money or gifts were exchanged for this review. I seem to be one of the very few that found this book a little on the average side. It really probably wasnt the books fault. In fact, if youre looking for some good reviews of this book, try out Phoebe Norths Review. There are several different reasons why people enjoy apocalypse stories. Some people enjoy watching the break down of society and making commentary on that. Some people enjoy the... So imagine the super-volcano at Yellowstone National Park erupted and caused the grid to fall, no more electricity, no more travel by car or plane, food is scarce, ash fall causes roofs to fall in and buildings to cave, people start looting and acting like maniacal animals. that is the premise of this book. It's not exactly dystopian, but more worst-case disaster scenario. I thought the book started really strong, but fizzled in the middle, then picked up in the last 30% or so. However, it... I remember a high school history teacher telling us that if there were ever a nuclear attack he recommended getting in a car and driving as fast as possible towards New York City, most likely it would be a target and you'd have a better chance of getting instantly killed the closer you were to 'ground zero' this was when ground zero meant the spot where nuclear warheads would strike, and at a time when we feared IBM's flying over Canada as a doomsday scenario, one that you figure gives you time... When I looked at this title I kept thinking of that childhood chant. ashes we all fall down. Well what you know that may not be so far from the truth. Alex is your normal teenage guy living in the suburbs in Iowa. He fights with his mom, and on his free time plays games and practices taekwondo. From what you can tell he doesn't particularly seem like a special teenager. He's kind of bratty and has a good life. Well Alex's parents and sister decide to visit family, and he fights to... ”Everything would be better tomorrow, I thought: a new day, a new dawn. It would have to be better than this. I was wrong. There was no new dawn the next day. ” Cedar Falls, Iowa. Almost 16-years-old Alex has just experienced a major break-through on his way to adulthood: His parents stopped arguing with him and have taken off to uncle Paul's goat farm in Illinois with only his sister Rebecca in tow. Alex luxuriates in his freedom of choice between doing his homework and collecting gold-nuggets... * 4 ~Can they catch a break~ Stars* Wow. I normally stay away from YA books but this one was was written so well, that at times I forgot that these were just kids trying to stay alive. Yes, there were times that I felt the book slowed down and others where I found it so unbelievable that these kids couldn't catch a break, but it worked in the long run. Definitely a different twist to the post apocalyptic world and believable consequences that could happen at any time. I absolutely LOVED... Sometimes it takes a major natural disaster to make you realize how important family is! Just ask Alex. He is as happy as can be that he was left alone for a weekend. He didnt want to go across the country to visit relatives. So, now he is by himself and loving life, right? Not. See, when you are teen trying to act like an adult, sometimes you need to make adult decisions. Sometimes, those decisions are huge like fleeing for your life because a supervolcano has erupted. Sometimes those decisions... Christmas present from Jen (Nevada Jen) 4. 5 Stars* For the first time ever, I felt ashamed of my species. The volcano had taken our homes, our food, our automobiles, and our airplanes, but it hadn't taken our humanity. No, we'd given that up on our own. Oh my gosh, book was SO good. I think I'm only shocked because, well, I kept putting it off and putting it off and then my wonderful Jen bought this for me for Christmas. Turns out. I am a total MORON for not reading this before... “For the first time ever, I felt ashamed of my species. ” Define Humanity: humanity, noun, plural -ties. 1. all human beings collectively; the human race; humankind. 2. the quality or condition of being human; human nature. 3. the quality of being humane; kindness; benevolence. Define survival: survival, noun 1. the act or fact of surviving... End of the world story? I am THERE regardless if the book is about zombies, nuclear fall out, or mass pandemic. But, if the end of the world story happens to be about a natural disaster ? say like a massive volcano eruption ? then I am in heaven. For me, this book is the best of everything in one of my favorite genres. It is a young adult book with a male main character, set in a location I know intimately well because I grew up there, and involving a super volcano eruption and its aftermath... I'm not entirely sure why I put myself through reading books like this when they cause a sense of panic to flow right through my body and out the end. Honestly I would be completely inadequate; I don't know any survival skills; I couldn't butcher a pencil let alone an animal. Please excuse me while I run off to take a survival course, learn to run a farm and befriend anyone that would get advance warning of an incoming apocalypse so I can ransack the supermarket/ bookshops/ pharmacies/ diy.

This study guide contains the following sections: This detailed literature summary also contains Topics for Discussion on Ashfall by Mike Mullin. Ashfall is a young adult novel by Mike Mullin, which revolves around the explosion of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, and the attempts of Alex Halprin and Darla Edmunds to survive its aftermath. When the novel begins, Alex is a typical teenage kid, staying at home for the weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa, while his mother, father, and sister go to visit his uncle and his family in Warren, Illinois. The supervolcano erupts, blanketing everything with ash. Alex takes refuge with neighbors, and then ultimately decides to set off to find his parents in Warren. He travels through the countryside, coming across an escaped convict named Target. Target attempts to kill Alex with an axe; he narrowly escapes, and tumbles into the barn of the Edmunds, Darla, and her mother, Gloria. They help nurse him back to health, and he assists them with their farm chores. Target and a friend brutally rape and murder Mrs. Edmund, while Alex helps to defend Darla. Target's friend is killed by Alex, and when Target comes back, Alex kills him as well. He and Darla then head out across country to go to Alex's uncle's farm. They scavenge for food as they go, and sleep where they can, dealing with cold rain, and incredible amounts of snow. They are scooped up into a refugee camp that is overcrowded and starved, and escape to the uncle's farm. There, Darla and Alex discover that Alex's parents have been gone for five weeks, looking for him. Alex agrees to stay put, because his uncle and aunt and cousins need him, and because his sister is there as well. Darla helps to revolutionize the farm by creating a grist mill which the family can use to its advantage in terms of collecting food as payment, and offering the locals a service. When Alex's uncle breaks his leg, Doc McCarthy sets the fracture and accepts kale as payment. They set up a future trading market, where kale will be traded for pork from the town of Warren, through the doctor. From the farm, Alex and Darla look forward to an uncertain future.
