Hey folks, So some of the older folks on this subreddit may remember I used to do lore thread for the various StarCraft heroes years ago (oh god it¡Çs already two years). I wrapped it up with Fenix, and waited for something new to talk about on the StarCraft front. But StarCraft¡Çs always been a bit of a black sheep in terms of its major fanbases compared to the much larger lore fanbases of its cousins, so it¡Çs been a while. So in honor of the rework of Tassadar, I thought it would be good to redo my old Tassadar episode (which I wasn¡Çt super happy with anyway) and explore his new abilities and talents, while giving a look like the lore of the character for those who haven¡Çt played StarCraft. All previous Lore Of episodes Our Brightest Son Tassadar was born into the Protoss Empire, and a commanding Executor of the race¡Çs warrior Templar Caste. A young and promising military mind in his 300s, Tassadar represented a new generation who looked toward a dynamic future for their people. This however conflicted with the more stoic nature of the ruling government of the Empire, the Conclave, and drew him the ire of the more traditional of their Judicator Caste. However, it earned him the respect of much of the Templar, including the honored warrior Fenix. Soon he took on an apprentice, a young and promising student named Artanis, who he trained in the ways of the Templar. One of the tasks of Tassadar was to patrol the domain the protoss had under their Dae¡ÇUhl, or Great Stewardship, which was a section of space they safeguarded, unbeknownst to the lesser species who lived there, including the newly arrived terran colonists, exiled humans from Earth. When patrolling near the borders of protoss space, Tassadar discovered a strange organic alien probe. Upon capturing and examining it, he discovered that these probes reacted to the energies of the protoss and their khaydarin crystals, and contained the protogenetics of the same race that uplifted the protoss, the xel¡Çnaga. Communing with the probe, Tassadar discovered a thought stream coming from the probe, a set of orders: ¡ÈFIND HUMANITY¡Ä ERADICATE¡Ä LEARN¡Ä EVOLVE¡Ä¡É This probe was from an alien swarm known as the zerg, and though the protoss remained blind to the fact the zerg¡Çs true target was the protoss, the Conclave bid immediate action be taken. Tassadar scoured terran space, and discovered that the fringe terran colony of Chau Sara was infected with hive spores, and subtly infested to be assimilated into the zerg¡Çs hive mind. The Conclave ordered that Tassadar purify the planet to stop the infestation. Though reluctant to slaughter innocents, Tassadar did his duty. Purifier beams from his fleet ripped apart the surface of Chau Sara, liquefying the crust and wiping out all life, zerg and terran. The terran government who ruled Chau Sara, the Terran Confederacy, mobilized a military response, but Tassadar refused to slaughter any more terrans, and pulled his fleet back to see the situation develop. The Conclave gave him new orders; slaughter any and all terran worlds that showed even small signs of infestation, and if necessary, cull all terrans. This abhorred Tassadar, as it contradicted everything the Templar and the Protoss Empire stood for in safeguarding the lesser races. The seeds of doubt in the noble leadership of the Conclave were fanned, but he continued to command the Koprulu Expeditionary Fleet against the threat of the zerg. The First Great War Soon the zerg sent their scouting broods to the neighboring planet of Mar Sara, but the Confederacy curiously refused to evacuate the population, stranding much of the population there. Tassadar held off until the zerg launched a full invasion, and in the final stages even personally landed on the planet with a cadre of warriors, investigating a terran base. There he found a human named Andre Madrid, in the early stages of being infested, and gave him the mercy of death before he lost his humanity. Seeing anti-Confederate paramilitary groups such as the Sons of Korhal evacuate the survivors of the planet, Tassadar returned to his fleet, and purified Mar Sara. The zerg invasion continued through terran space, with Tassadar¡Çs fleet never far behind. When the zerg came to the Antiga System, Tassadar kept his fleet on the fringes of the conflict zone. Weeks later the when planet of Antiga Prime was being overrun, the Executor contacted the Sons of Korhal leader Arcturus Mengsk, signaling him to evacuate the colony. When the remnants of the terrans on the colony evacuated, Tassadar again purified the planet. Unbeknownst to Tassadar, both Mengsk and the Confederacy were luring the zerg to planets using a weapon named the psi emitter, hoping to use the zerg to wipe out their opposition. This came to a head on the Confederate capital world of Tarsonis. Mengsk, seeking to destroy the Confederacy once and for all, unleashed multiple psi emitters on Tarsonis, luring billions of zerg to the planet. Tassadar quickly sent his fleet in response, but refused to slaughter billions of terrans in purification, and send a ground force to pacify the zerg to allow the terrans time to escape. But Mengsk had other plans, and send a strike force under his lieutenant, Sarah Kerrigan, to assault Tassadar¡Çs landing party. The protoss force¡Çs main thrust was neutralized, but not before a massive wave of zerg destroyed Kerrigan¡Çs forces, and Mengsk left her for dead. The battle spiraled into crushing defeat for Tassadar as the zerg destroyed both any hope of terran or protoss victory. The Executor was forced to fall back with his fleet, stranding swaths of his warriors who continued to fight across Tarsonis. The Conclave saw this failure as resulting from his refusal to follow their orders to burn the human worlds, and bid he and his fleet return to their homeworld of Aiur. Tassadar knew that if he returned, they would likely execute him. Some weeks later, Tassadar felt a strange psionic cry echo across the sector, emanating from the volcanic planet Char. Not willing to risk the entire fleet, he recalled all but one ship to Aiur, and took his capital ship the Gantrithor (though which ship it was gets weird with the games) to investigate with only a small detachment of Templar. The Dark Templar (So a quick note, the games and the book depiction of these events in Queen of Blades contradict each other A LOT in this section, so I¡Çll have the games take priority and use the books to fill the gaps) There on Char, Tassadar found the primary zerg hive clusters, there engaged with two factions of terran forces, one the armies of Arcturus Mengsk¡Çs new government, the Terran Dominion, and anti-Mengsk rebels led by Arcturus¡Çs former captain Jim Raynor. However, he found the majority of their ships were in the process of being overrun by zerg boarding parties. As a mercy, Tassadar destroyed those overrun, and the safe ships were able to make emergency jumps away. With orbit secure, Tassadar deployed to the surface, and found the source of the psionic emanations was Mengsk¡Çs former lieutenant he fought on Tarsonis, Kerrigan, who had been infested into a powerful psionic weapon of the zerg. Tassadar met with Raynor¡Çs forces, now stranded on the surface after the loss of their ships, and the two made a tentative alliance. He went to confront Kerrigan with his forces, but found she and her broods were far too strong. The Executor lured her to a final confrontation, but he merely left an illusion of himself there, distracting her. Unbeknownst to Tassadar, another faction of protoss had arrived on the planet, and used his distraction to sneak into the zerg ranks and kill one of their lieutenants, a cerebrate named Zasz. This was Dark Prelate Zeratul of the Nerazim, tribes of protoss who were exiled from Aiur for removing themselves from the communal mind link of the Khala. The death of Zasz threw the Swarm into disarray, forcing them to cull their own feral broods. Tassadar soon met with Zeratul, but due to his indoctrination to hate the Nerazim, Tassadar attacked him on sight. Zeratul soundly defeated him, but their confrontation was interrupted with Kerrigan sent her broods to attack them in retaliation. Though reluctant, Tassadar realized the only way they would survive is if the Khalai, Nerazim and terrans all banded together. Soon though, the zerg hive mind processed what Zeratul had done to its formerly immortal lieutenants, and realized it had touched minds with the Nerazim, revealing the location of the protoss homeworld of Aiur. The Overmind took the bulk of the broods with him, but Kerrigan convinced the being that she should stay behind to cull the last of the one enemy that could damage the Overmind. The Overmind, having left the greatness of her spirit to her, reluctantly agreed. Thus as the Swarm left Char to invade Aiur, the Queen of Blades kept a running war with the three factions across the surface. As the conflict went on for weeks, Tassadar and Zeratul began to grow close as friends. In spite of the Conclave¡Çs propaganda, Tassadar had always had a fascination with the Nerazim, and slowly they began to teach him their ways. Soon they learned that the zerg used energies similar to the Nerazim, and only those energies could defeat the Overmind and its cerebrates. As their training finished, Zeratul put Tassadar through a ritual named the Shadow Walk, where he had to move through a valley of Nerazim to reach the end, using force or stealth to make it through. Combining Nerazim and Khalai energies, Tassadar blinded the attackers and made it to the end, completing the ritual to earn the title of Dark Templar. In a final confrontation with Kerrigan, Tassadar put these abilities to the test. While his allies distracted her, Tassadar snuck through the shadows, and used Void energy to kill the cerebrate commanding the queen¡Çs broods (incidentally the
