Few songwriters can write something this poignant today and have a hit with it. I am sure they are out there somewhere, they just haven't found the muse that Gordon Lightfoot had. One of the greatest songs ever written. Maybe you have to be like Lightfoot, Nick Drake, or Shane McGowan (The Pogues) and actually live the song first. Another one of those addicted souls who manages to write lovely melodies despite his own hardships and transcends it. This song actually punctuates it brings you back to it.

[1] Theme [ edit] Lightfoot has cited his divorce for inspiring the lyrics, [2] saying they came to him as he was sitting in a vacant Toronto house one summer. [3] At the request of his daughter, Ingrid, he performs the lyrics with a slight change now: the line "I'm just trying to understand the feelings that you lack" is altered to "I'm just trying to understand the feelings that we lack. " He has said in an interview that the difficulty with writing songs inspired by personal stories is that there is not always the emotional distance and clarity to make lyrical improvements such as the one his daughter suggested. [4] Production [ edit] The song was produced by Lenny Waronker and Joe Wissert at Sunwest Recording Studios, in Los Angeles, California, [5] with the classical music arrangement of violins by Nick DeCaro. [7] Format releases [ edit] This song first appeared on Lightfoot's 1970 album Sit Down Young Stranger, which was later renamed If You Could Read My Mind following the song's success. [ citation needed] Chart performance [ edit] On release the song reached #1 in Canadian Singles Chart, and was his first recording to appear in the USA, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in February 1971. Later in the year it reached #27 in the Australian Singles Chart, an #30 in the United Kingdom's. The song also reached number one for one week on the Billboard Easy Listening chart, [8] and was the first of four Lightfoot releases to reach number one. Rights infringement legal action [ edit] In 1987 Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against the composer of Whitney Houston 's hit " The Greatest Love of All ", alleging plagiarism of 24 bars of "If You Could Read My Mind" by Michael Masser; the transitional section that begins "I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow" of the Masser song has the same melody as "I never thought I could feel this way and I got to say that I just don't get it; I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back" of Lightfoot's song. Lightfoot has stated that he dropped the lawsuit when he felt it was having a negative effect on the singer Houston, as the lawsuit was about the writer and not her. [9] He also said that he didn't want people thinking that he had stolen his melody from Masser. [10] The case was settled out of court and Masser issued a public apology. He's NOT a musician. he's NOT a Canadian. and as far as it matters he's not a fan it why do we want to hear his comments about a Canadian musical legend ? This documentary was done late in Lightfoot's life and what it lacks in vibrancy it makes up with a sort of honesty we don't usually see in public people until honesty can't cost them any fan-base. such is the case here I suspect although he does seem to be the kind of person who does, and has always done it his a few exceptions he talks about. A bit about his childhood in Orillia and a bit about his early life as a musician learning both the trade and the politics behind the trade and he learned them both well. Selections of his songs and several performances enhance this somewhat uninspired piece but if you're a fan of his, this is definitely going to please you. Not long enough and not comprehensive enough and definitely not featuring enough fellow of whom made huge hits with HIS words and emotions, it's still a good documentary and, all in all, a well spent time and a little bit learned about him that I didn't already know.
