Hey friends, Some of you may remember me from posts in the past. I started a content marketing agency called Optimist in December of 2016. Since then, it's grown from a side hustle built off of my personal freelancing work to a real, full-blown company with more than a dozen clients. Its been a wild ride and Ive truly had a great time sharing details and advice with the folks here. Each year, Ive shared my progress and tried to answer questions as best as I can: Year 1 - 0 to 500k ARR Year 2 - 500k to 1MM ARR Ive received hundreds of messages, emails, and LinkedIn requests over the years from posting these and hopefully theyre helpful for new entrepreneurs or anyone looking to grow. Since its 2020, I thought Id share a new update, some lessons learned, and a bit about our plans for the new year! This year, we hit our revenue and growth goal of 1. 5MM ARR (125k MRR) ? in September! Here's our monthly revenue from January 2017 to September 2019. So, I wanted to share some of the big changes that have happened over the last year, what I've learned personally, and how we're continuing to evolve. Lets get to it. How Optimist Works First, an overview/recap of the Optimist business model: We operate as a “collective” of full time/professional freelancers Everyone aside from me is a contractor Entirely remote/distributed team Each freelancer earns 50-75/hour Clients pay us a flat monthly fee for full-service content marketing (includes research/strategy, writing, design, and content promotion/outreach) Packages range in price from 5-20k/mo We offer profit share to everyone on our core team as a way to give everyone ownership in the company Second, a breakdown of Optimist by the numbers: 16 clients on retainer 133k MRR 21 "core" team members (freelance/contract) 35 additional freelancers in our community 70k paid in profit share in 2019 Gross profit margin ~40% Net profit ~25% before paying my salary and profit share Now, let's get to the lessons from 2019 and plans for 2020! Keeping the structure flat at >1MM Revenue In 2019, we implemented a lot of changes. Some of the systems and processes that worked to get us to 10 or 12 clients really started to break down when we got above that point. This put me in a difficult position where I was often overworked and trying to figure out how to grow. Our goal as an agency has always been to remain flat. In fact, our entire business model is built on this concept. The reason we're able to pay competitive freelance rates AND offer profit share while maintaining healthy profits is because we don't have the overhead associated with most agencies. We don't have editors or managers or directors or creative directors or any of the other layers. But, that gets more difficult as you scale. Without the managers and producers and other middle-management roles of a traditional agency, much of the day-to-day stuff falls on me. Any of the communications or hand-offs or little tasks fall to me. Finding writers and designers falls on me. Creating editorial calendars falls on me. Answering questions about promotion falls on me. Running reports falls on me. TL;DR - It's a lot of work. We needed to fix it. But I didn't want to radically rethink our entire business model. If I started bringing in other people just to push the work around, then we'd add overhead. we'd eat our profit margin. We'd either need to dramatically raise our rates or entirely change our compensation and team structure. Fuck that. Rather than hiring project managers and adding layers of complexity to our operation, I did the more difficult ? and more expensive ? thing. I doubled down on the idea of autonomy and ownership. I asked everyone to do more in order to help us sustain growth without the extra work falling on me. Writers and designers were asked to work directly with clients, to manage hand-offs, and to connect directly with everyone else on the team to answer questions and solve problems. I re-positioned our promotions team to have one person act as a central coordinator and to put a team of people around her to help share the workload. This decision meant that our organization has remained flat. This only worked, I think, because of our unique structure. If we were a traditional agency and I was paying employees a normal salary, I dont think I could reasonably expect them to “step up” in the way that they have in the last year. But, because everyone is paid *both* hourly for their work and given a profit share percentage based on their involvement, everyone has a vested interest in taking on more work, helping the team succeed, and keeping our clients happy. I think this decision was the right one, even though it's more difficult and more expensive. It's indicative of most of the choices that I've made with Optimist. Our entire business model has been built on this collective ownership model that bucks conventional wisdom about building an agency, maximizing profit, and preparing it for acquisition. First of all ? my goal was never to maximize profit nor my personal wealth. If I wanted to get rich by starting Optimist, I would have done things very differently. I wanted to create a collective that was built on shared ownership and we have done that. To reverse course now would have been backtracking on that original vision. Second ? I think that the reason we have been so successful is because of the ownership model we have built. Many other agencies in our space likely have higher margins and their owners make more money. But they also work with young talent thats just there to collect a paycheck. The work is low quality. Good people burn out and quit. And because of that, they churn and burn through clients like crazy. Yes, its more expensive and less lucrative for me personally. But I philosophically believe that the team should retain more of the value that they create. And, as an entrepreneur, I think it gives us a competitive advantage to have a team full of smart, autonomous professionals who have a personal stake in our success? they truly give a shit. My 2cents is that the “obvious” choice may not always be the smart one. Cutting costs now may not be the best way to maximize profits over the long run. 2. Using the 70/20/90 rule to scale my time As you scale, you cant keep a leash on every process or every piece of work that your team creates. In the first two years, I acted as the strategy director, the account manager, the managing director, and the creative director?I tried to own everything that we did. Delegating was painful. Mostly because I felt like I was always the one who had the most knowledge and experience?and, of course, that was often true. But the 70/20/90 rule changed everything. The idea is simple: Find someone who can replace you 70% of the way Train them to do 20% more Be happy with 90% The reality is that any time you delegate work?especially as an expert who has built a business on their own experience?its likely to take a small hit in quality. As a manager, it's your job to manage against that natural tendency. But that can create a world where you never let anything go and you never delegate?the worst possible outcome. This concept has helped me a lot. For one, it's reminded me that very few people will have the same knowledge and experience as me. It's reminded me that a big part of my job is helping people achieve that level (or as close as I can. The biggest item here has been that we rolled out a Distributed Ops model. In a nutshell, this means that outside of client work, we asked our creative teams to (voluntarily) take on additional roles related to client operations. These roles are paid hourly and also come with additional profit share. Roles like recruiting, onboarding, planning team retreats, scheduling team activities, and others have all been delegated to people across the team. From this, I've taken a few things: I delegate more freely. Accept that people won't do things the way that I would do them or have done them and that's okay. This is hard for me as someone who is perhaps a bit on the controlling side. But, I have had to divorce the company from my personal ego. This company is bigger than me and our success depends on everyone doing great work, not me micromanaging every decision and action of the team. Investing (time and money) in training. This is especially strange given our structure. Most companies don't "train" freelancers. And, I'm certainly not looking to teach writers how to write or designers how to design. But, that's only 70% of the work that we do. In order to get people to 90% they need the extra 20% knowledge of strategy. So, I've been working on a course for our internal team that helps everyone learn and understand the business goals of our clients, the nature of the content marketing strategy, and how all of the moving pieces come together. Shifting to a strategic and proactive talent pipeline One of the biggest challenges with our content marketing model is that the work is a constant treadmill. For most of our clients, we are producing 4-10 new articles every single month. Theres almost never downtime in the schedule, and that means that our team is constantly on a production schedule, facing down new deadlines, We found ourselves treading water on client accounts. falling behind, and sometimes missed our scheduled publish dates, despite the fact that we planned for a 1-month lead time on content production. If a writer fell behind on work for a client, it might take them weeks to fully catch up. And, worst of all, once one person in the process fell behind, everyone else would be behind as well?it was a cascading effect. We struggled with this a lot. Da kannte er Thornton eigentlich noch nicht ????♀? Naja. bin mal gespannt. Ich verstehe nach dem Lesen des Buchs übrigens sehr gut, warum der Hund hier CGI ist ? ich will nicht wissen, wie sie das mit einem echten Hund hätten verfilmen sollen, ohne für Tierquälerei verklagt zu werden.

A lot of predictions have come true, while others have been a year off and meanwhile others were completely off base. The other biggest title scheduled was postponed into this year (Animal Crossing: New Horizons ? Mar 20. The biggest thing is that there will be a longer life on many of their titles going into 2020 with DLC. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ? The final fighter of the first fighters pass is promised to be released before the end of February 2020. Also announced was the production of another 5 fighter pass to be developed. While the first fighters pass is likely to end on another third-party note, nothing is known about the new fighters pass. Fire Emblem: Three Houses ? There was an expansion pass released for US25 which is to expand the already large game even larger. While multiple waves of releases, we have received extra cosmetics, recruits and a quest. The biggest part of the expansion is promised to be released before April 30, which includes extra story elements. Luigis Mansion 3 ? Coming with 2 expansion passes, each for US10. Both are multiplayer packs with the first one coming by April 30 and the second one coming by July 31. Purchasing the passes also gives you a new Polterpup for use in the main game. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order ? There were 3 packs included in the US20 expansion pass and the first one has been released adding Marvel Knights. The 2nd pack is ready to release just before Christmas and includes the Danger Room and 4 X-Men added to the roster. The final pack is called the Shadow of Doom and said to include Fantastic Four characters by Spring 2020. Super Mario Maker 2 ? while nothing is announced they just dropped a free DLC pack #2 in December. They have added multiplayer with friends, doubled your upload amounts and now have a Link power up for the SMB style. I would not doubt if Nintendo added at least one more free pack (or even a paid pack) in 2020, unfortunately they are overly silent on this matter. A First Place Finish (1st Party) This is a little hard to break down as when Nintendo restructured in 2015 to make the teams more fluid. The teams are typically headed by a producer and a developer. Nintendo Entertainment Planning and Development Tokyo Yoshiaki Koizumi - Previously worked on Super Mario Odyssey, he is now the deputy General Manager of EPD Tokyo. I dont know who will replace his role as producer with this team so I am leaving the team under him. With the release in 2018 of some free DLC for Super Mario Odyssey in the form of Luigis Balloon World, I believe they started developing new world for a direct sequel. The same thing happened with Super Mario Galaxy and it was just under 3 years development for its sequel. Especially because the closest thing to a 3D Mario game in 2019 was Luigis Mansion 3 and that game only has multiplayer DLC coming. Expect a full fledge sequel to be revealed close to e3 to go head to head with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Koichi Hayashida - The other team that helped with Super Mario Odyssey also did the port of Captain Toad: Treasure Trackers. They ported the game to Switch and added some new content for Switch in 2018, likely just to add a title to the systems portfolio in that lackluster year. Most likely helping Koizumi with Super Mario Odyssey 2 to ensure they get the title out this year. Takao Shimizu - This producer helped create the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition. I am certain he and his team are responsible for the NES and SNES Online games. His team is smaller and they also assisted with Super Mario Odyssey to ensure they hit the holiday 2017. I am sure besides getting more games with the online service, that he is also assisting with the sequel to Super Mario Odyssey. Nintendo Entertainment Planning and Development Kyoto Eiji Aonuma - Known as the “Zelda team”, there are two core teams. I believe both are working under Hidemaro Fujibayashi to help develop the sequel to Breath of the Wild. Since the other director, Hiromasa Shikatas last credits were A Link Between Worlds (2013 with his own team) and Tri Force Heroes (2015 work with Grezzo. I believe he is working with Fujibayashi as a co-producer or under him. Nintendo knows that Zelda sells consoles and what they have shown at e3 while stating in full development, I believe they want to have this game out this year to also go head to head with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X. Hideki Konno - This team is the team behind the Mario Kart series. With the last game was their mobile undertaking with Mario Kart Tour. A little lackluster but Nintendos overall mobile plans is to have some games in play on mobile and eventually transfer the gamers to full fledge games. With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling extremely well and being part of the Black Friday pack in again, it is likely we will at least hear what this team has been up to since their 2017 port of a 2015 game. With Mario Kart also having some competition in the form of Crash Team Racing and Team Sonic Racing they may be ready to reveal Mario Kart 9 or a spin off such as Donkey Kong Racing. Possible but unlikely to have this team work on either F-Zero or Wave Race. It would keep them up to date with racing engines while releasing a title that would not directly compete with the evergreen title Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Hiroyuki Kimura - Super Mario Maker 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe were developed under Kimura with the help of Takashi Tezuka. I foresee them making more DLC for Super Mario Maker 2 and possibly a new title in the New Super Mario series since a full 2D Mario game plays quite different from Mario Maker. Other possibilities would be the development of a new Wario Ware or Wario Land game to differentiate itself more from Mario Maker. A small group under Kimura has developed the Pikmin franchise. Things have been silent with this franchise since Hey! Pikmin on 3DS. Fans clamoured for Pikmin 4 and Pikmin 3 as a launch title on the failed Wii U system was actually quite successful breaking over 1 million sold. I think that we will see a Pikmin 4 this year and either the game will come out this year or next. Kosuke Yubuki - Previously worked on ARMS in 2017 and its DLC. This producer also worked with Konno so it is likely this team was folded back into the Mario Kart team to prepare something for this year or next. It is possible they are working on an ARMS follow up, but with the success of Smash, it is unlikely. Hisashi Nogami - This is the young producer in charge of both Animal Crossing and Splatoon series. He worked with another young producer Aya Kyogoku on Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons due March 20 and their pennant for long lasting supporting DLC and solid online code, expect a big reveal on the game early this year with support coming constantly throughout the year, also expect big online details. I dont see this team working on anything else while focusing on Animal Crossing. These teams are a second to none (2nd Party Studios) AlphaDream - This team created the Mario & Luigi series on Nintendos portables. Due to recent ports underperforming on the now defunct 3DS system, AlphaDream had incurred insurmountable debt and filed for bankruptcy in October, so it is unlikely we will see anything from them. Camelot Software Planning - Their last title was Mario Tennis Aces (2018) and its respective DLC. Being a smaller studio, it takes some time for development. While half a team was working on the DLC, they other half was probably pre-planning the next Mario Golf title. With all the DLC on MTA completed at the top of the year, they have likely been busy in full development on Mario Golf. Most likely will see Mario Golf sometime in 2020. Game Freak - They just released Pokemon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch this year to mixed review. They typically have something Pokemon related out each year and they also developed their own title Little Town Hero. They likely have something new on development and will at least show something this year, however; I think with the blowback from Sword/Shield that Pokemon may take a year off and actually finetune itself for a 2021 release Grezzo - This team just release the port of The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening. This was their first foray into HD development besides assisting with BotW during crunch time. Most known for their 3DS ports of Zelda titles, they also developed their own title on the 3DS: Ever Oasis. They have also been rumored to be developing a port of Skyward Sw

Jan 9: I ran out of the bandage (called saniderm) that I needed for aftercare. I washed the tattoo, then went to a local tattoo shop and asked if I could purchase some. They said I could have it for free and they would put it on for me. I agreed. Person who applied the saniderm may or may not have washed their hands (I was pretty loopy so I don't remember) definitely didn't wash the tattoo itself, and definitely didn't wear gloves. Jan 11: I wake up with a huge red ring around the tattoo and little white pustules all over it. I go to the hospital, I'm there over night with a skin infection that was 12-24 hrs from going septic. Jan 12: I leave a review (edited to add: of the second tattoo shop) with my story. Jan 13: I wake up to an email threatening to sue me for "Liable" pretty sure they meant "libel" and a comment on the FB review I left with similar language, accusations (some of which were libelous themselves) and screenshots from my work twitter (I'm an online dominatrix so posting that linking it to my personal profile = NOT COOL. Talked to lawyers, who said that they don't have a case, but I might, but if I want it to go away I should remove the review. I did. I also posted about what the lawyer said ON MY PERSONAL FACEBOOK. CLEARLY, I was wrong. I hadn't realized until I got to the local shop that they are under new management since my last visit there. *Did you actually take care of your tattoo properly? These are my aftercare instructions, as emailed to me by the original artist the day I got the tattoo. *Why aren't you responding to questions posted here? Being an online domme, I keep weird hours. I know it's like 3pm EST, but I literally just woke up. I stay up until 5-6am most nights. *Don't you think you were already infected before you went to the second shop? Requirements were a pleasant voice, good spoken and written grammar, some tech-knowledge, and the ability to work day and night shifts. The office was only two subway stations from my apartment, and they offered health insurance. I applied despite having very vague notions about computer sciences. The phone interview went well and after two more meetings with HR and management, they sent me a very generous offer (considering I was entirely inexperienced. During my first week, I had to work the regular 9-5 shift so I could be online at the same time as my manager, who was working from a different city. Afterward, I would work on the regular support schedule - a four-day cycle of one day shift, one night shift, two days off (9 am - 9 pm and 9 pm - 9 am respectively. On my first day, I dressed smartly in a loose sweater and long skirt. Perceptively aware that IT departments are mostly male, I didnt want to draw unnecessary attention by dressing provocatively or inappropriately. The guy at the front desk seemed regular enough. He introduced himself as Tom before helping me fill out some paperwork and guiding me to a desk in the large open-plan workspace. I stared at the countless desks as we walked, finding it difficult to meet the eyes of the men that sat behind them. I saw no other girls in the workspace, which was unusual and somewhat unsettling. Toms relaxed demeanor could not make up for the immediate hostility aimed at my presence. The air seemed to seep out of the room as I felt my new coworkers chant ‘ you dont belong here in silent unison. It surprised me when Tom stopped at a desk that was extensively decorated with printed memes, bright pink floral stickers, and a small tattered teddy keychain that lay behind the monitor. Apart from these artifacts, there was a thick layer of dust coating the keyboard, monitor, and desk space. ‘Oh, what the actual. Tom muttered angrily. ‘Im so sorry, he said, chancing a quick glance down at my papers. ‘... This desk was supposed to have been cleared ages ago. Ill have to have a word with the custodian. ‘Oh, thats all right, I answered. ‘I could just wipe it down myself, no problem. Tom was skeptical, but a sweeping glance around the room confirmed that there were no other free desks for me to occupy. The rest of the day went by in a haze. I learned about my tasks, which were to answer support related phone calls and create new tickets in the system. I had to monitor all incoming chats and written tickets and sort them by level of urgency and type. I wouldnt be required to offer any technical advice, but I had to become well acquainted with the product software. Since I wasnt answering any calls yet, I immersed myself in the manual. I didnt understand a lot of it and spent most of my time googling networks, black and white box testing, database security, and other things. My manager checked in just before lunch and seemed slightly disappointed by my overall grasp of the material. Feeling like a failure, I took a break to clean the desk. I got up to find Tom and ask him for a cloth for my countertop. I instantly regretted my decision. Every eye in the room was upon me the moment I rose. I couldnt stare back to confirm, but there was a surreal hush as I made my way back down the workspace. The familiar clatter of keyboards had noticeably diminished, as my face grew warm and self-conscious. I noticed myself hunching forward slightly as I walked, a weak attempt at becoming less visible. Before turning off to the passage that led to the front desk area, I dared to meet the eyes of one of the shameless gawkers. I dont know what I was expecting, but the sight of a sneering hooded programmer sent a chill down my spine. He was around my age but didnt seem the least bit ashamed or uncomfortable by my confrontation. There was a cruel smile playing on his thin lips as he eyed my exposed ankles before turning his attention back to the screens in front of him. I wondered how he would feel if I eyed his long, pimpled neck in the same manner. It was the same as I walked back to my chair with a box of computer wipes. There was some good to come of that day. While I was cleaning the desk drawers, I found a half-used notebook from the previous occupant. She never wrote her first name, only an initial followed by a last name: S. Brooks. However, based on the desk decor, I was sure she was a girl like me. Her discarded belongings provided some comfort, but it was her notebook which proved to be a true treasure. In it, my predecessor had summarized and simplified the entire manual, using easy-to-understand terms and explanations for the daunting terminology and complicated instructions in the manual. With her help, I was able to surprise my manager with my product knowledge at the end of the shift. After a good days work, I braved the workspace once more to explore the kitchen before heading home. Tom had advertised a top-notch coffee machine and snacks, and I was starving after such an emotionally and intellectually taxing day. Besides, all my credit cards were in the red, and I wanted to fill up on cookies. As I approached, I heard eager chatter coming from the kitchen area and even some laughter. Foolishly, I hoped that my kitchen-dwelling coworkers would be warmer, more welcoming, or, at the very least civil. Instead, the small kitchen space fell perfectly silent upon my entrance. There were five men of different ages and sizes seated around a cheap-looking cafeteria table, and they were all looking directly at me. ‘Rough first day? inquired a sardonic, medium-pitched voice. I lifted my gaze from the floor tiles and scanned the crowd for my addresser. It wasnt difficult to recognize the self-assured hooded figure that had stared me down earlier. ‘You must be very experienced, he continued snarkily, waving a strand of greasy black hair from his eyes. ‘To get such a comfortable job. You must be quite the whiz. ‘What is this, high school? I blurted out. Now, Im not usually a confrontational person, but this was honestly too much. Hostility is one thing, social awkwardness another, but this was beginning to feel like a cheesy 80s high school drama with thirty-year-old actors playing teenagers. ‘Im just here to grab some coffee and if you doubt my candidacy for this job, you can take your concerns to HR directly. I continued, enjoying the shocked and somewhat nervous faces of my offenders gang. Good, I wanted them to feel a fraction of the discomfort I had been dealing with all day. Opting to enjoy my snack far away from my coworkers, I walked back to my desk with my head held high and a mug of coffee. Right as I was about to sit and enjoy my frothy treat, I saw I had a text message from a withheld number: You have quite an attitude, dont you? I froze, hovering over my desk with the mug in one hand and my phone in the other. As I was attempting to process this grave breach of boundaries, I received two more messages within the same chat window. One was a naked photograph that I had sent my first serious college boyfriend. The second read: W hy dont you take that photo to HR? Obviously, I was deeply unsettled by this invasion of my privacy. The shame crept in, and I felt angry about drawing so much unwanted attention to myself. This was all my fault. I had come to work in an office full of ethical hackers with a very common dog name as a password. No doubt the photograph had made the rounds thanks to my gross coworker, and I was now the silent laughingstock of the office. Leaving my coffee untouched, I signed off and headed home, holding off the waterworks until I reached the safety of the subway. I couldnt stop crying for most of that night, turning the day's events over in my mind, feeling sick every time I imagined my coworkers leering at my naked body. At around 3 am, however, I realized that there was no sense in continuing the pity party. I had to come up with a plan of action if I was going to survive this workplace. Quitting was not an option because the pay they were offering me was far too good to pass up. Besides, I was literally living off scarcely more than a slice of pizza a day. My second option was going to HR, but there was no way I was going to open that can of worms. I couldnt prove who had sent me those messages. Last option? Stick with it, keep my head down, do the job they hired me for, and ignore all further harassment attempts. So thats what I did. Throughout my week of training, I came in to work on time, never leaving my desk except to go to the bathroom. I avoided contact with everyone and kept my eyes drawn to inanimate objects only. This is because Im not a fighter by any stretch of the imagination. Im a coward, a coward who can only fight when theyve been trapped into doing so. Pretty much like a cornered animal. Intense emotion, life or death situations, luck? Hell, I was about to get my head chomped down on when the guy finally decided to show up and bail me out. A second later and Id have been just a hunk of meat and bone. There was no way I could rely on it. Still, there was part of me that knew the wolf was needed. That if I was going to make it through this hell, I would need to figure out what makes it tick. With that being said, I was just as afraid of the wolf as I was any of Eris sisters…if not even more so. He and I have more of an understanding of each other now. There are times however, that I feel if the wolf could, it would do away with me entirely. The realization that I had eaten Lia was horrific. I knew I had killed her, but the fact that I had gone so far as to consume her was something that disturbed me to a great degree. Just the thoughts that bits and pieces of her were still making their way through my digestive tract. It made me want to keep vomiting. So I tried to, shoving my finger down my throat. I forced myself to regurgitate more of Lia into the maroon water of the toilet bowl. It took both Eri and Victor to grab me away from the bathroom and stop me from continuing to purge my systems. I was in shambles emotionally, bawling my eyes out. Even if Lia deserved to die for what she did, the mental strain from knowing that I ate another human being was destroying me. I wasnt a fool…I knew that was a possibility. But to know I actually did it…nothing could have prepared me for that. Eri tried calming me down, but I wasnt in any mood for it. I stormed out of the apartment into the cold. I didnt give a shit I was just wearing a thin t-shirt and boxers. I didnt even care it was my bare feet walking across the snow-covered concrete of the sidewalk. I wanted to get away, away from all of this. All of this, every facet of my situation began to crash into my mind. All of the violence, the murder, the terror, the cruelty…just the absurdity of it all. It forced me into a full-blown mental breakdown. I was walking through the streets with no particular destination in mind. The faces of concerned and bewildered people I walked by or looked out at me from their cars. I eventually found myself in the alleyway between some crummy diner and a rundown twenty-four-hour laundromat. I collapsed to the ground and laid on my back, just staring up at the starless night sky. I threw my arm over my eyes and cried. Letting out all of those emotions that had been building up since this entire situation started. All of the anger, frustration, fear, misery, hatred. I just couldnt hold it together anymore. Im sure to anyone looking at me I was a pathetic sight. Suddenly I felt something lick my cheek. Moving my arm aside, I saw the culprit was this little beagle pup. He had no collar, and his fur was a bit dirty, so I took him for a stray. I reached over and started scratching underneath the dogs chin. “You feeling alright there? ” I heard a voice from behind me, deeper in the alleyway. I sat up and sniffled, looking back, I saw a homeless man standing just a few feet away. The puppy crawled into my lap and propped itself against my chest, licking my chin. “Sorry about him, he doesnt get to meet new people all that often. ” The man said, walking closer. “Whats his name? ” I asked, stroking the dogs back. “Aster. Hes been my companion for oh…a while now. Someone stuffed him in a box and tossed him into a dumpster. He might have stayed in there had not heard his yipping. He might not talk much, but he keeps me good company. ” The man took off the outer coat he was wearing and offered it to me. “Go on, its a cold one tonight. ” I hesitantly took the coat from him and slid it on. It was a few sizes too big, so nothing too new to the clothes I had been getting. The man walked beside me and took a seat against the wall. Reaching into his pocket, he retrieved a cigarette and lighter. As I watched him light it, he chuckled. “I know, its a terrible habit. ” He said, taking a deep puff. “Just cant bring myself to break it. ” We sat there together in silence for a few minutes before I felt I needed to ask him. “Whyd you feel the need to come over to me? ” “Aster here is the one who found you. Hes a good judge of character. I could also see you were down on your luck. Looked like you could use some company. ” When I ran out here initially that was what I wanted. Just to wallow in my tears without anyone around. Yet, sitting there in that alley with Aster and that man. There was this sense of comfort just having a neutral presence there. Just another person who was showing a bit of kindness. It made me not feel so isolated from the world. We sat in silence for a good while, the man never once asking me why I was there or what I had been crying about. Aster curled up in my lap and fell asleep. While the man was just sitting there, smoking his cigarette and sharing in the peace and quiet. “Kevin! ” I heard Eris voice from the streets. She sounded pretty stressed out. “Shes looking for you. ” The man said. “I know” I replied. “You should go to her. Its a nice thing every now and then…taking a break from life like this. But you need to keep moving forward. ” Aster got up and stretched, hopping off of my lap and walking over to the man. I got up off the ground. I couldnt just run from this situation, as much stress and pain that would save me. “Thank you…by the way. ” I said, as I started walking down the alley towards the streets “Dont mention it. A shame things turned out like this…Youre a good kid, Kevin. Take care of that part of yourself, long as you do, youll never truly be a monster. ” I stopped and turned around to be greeted by an empty alley. The only sign that the man had even been there, the coat I was wearing and the smoking butt of the cigarette he had. “Kevin! ” I looked forward to see Eri rushing down the alley towards me. She charged into me, causing us both to fall onto the ground. Eri buried her head into my chest, sobbing loudly. All the time I had known her I hadnt ever seen Eri like this. She was usually calm and composed. Here she was crying profusely, her face wrought with worry. “Im sorry! I was scared…I didnt want to hurt you! I…I should have told you! I just didnt want to risk losing you! ” Eri said between her distraught sobs. “I love you…I know it seems like I dont, but I do! ” Eris fingers gripped onto me tightly as her streaming tears darkened the fabric of the coat. She was shivering something fierce. She hadnt attempted to grab her jacket when she came out to look for me. But it wasnt the cold that caused Eri to shake so. It was because she was terrified. “I-I dont want to be alone! Please…I know its selfish! I know what I did was horrible…I…I just didnt want to stop seeing you. ” Eri looked up at me, her lips quivering, her eyes puffy from all of the crying. I wrapped my arms around her and held her close. “I…I wont go anywhere. Just dont lie to me anymore. From now on, I want you to tell me everything, even if you think it will upset me. ” I said. “I…I wont. ” Eri said. We sat there together for a few moments before getting up and starting back towards the apartment. Eri grasping onto my hand, her eyes still watery. Seeing this side of her…in a way, it calmed my nerves. Thoughts had started to creep in that she just using me for her own survival. I had tried to push them away, but these feelings she showed. They felt genuine. Our relationship isnt normal, far from it. I dont think my feelings about her could ever change. Maybe that has to do with some magic she cast on me Im unaware of. Or it could just be my hopeless romanticism. But as fucked up as the situation was, and as much as it scarred me, physically, mentally, emotionally. I stayed. When we got back to the apartment, it was empty. Turns out that Miranda and Victor went out looking for me too, as well as Eri. Eri gave them a call to tell them we were back, and the two of us sat together on the couch. She leaned her head against my shoulder. “Im ready to talk…to tell you as much as I can. ” Eri went on to inform me about the multiple rules that the sisters are required to follow with the tradition. There were the ones I already knew about and a few new ones. Things like there being a cooldown period of about three days after the death of one of the sisters where the survivor would not be hunted by the next sister in line. Another being that the kills would only count when delivered by a sister or a familiar. There is also the rule of other sisters not being allowed to harm each other. The only ones that could were the current two youngest at the time. This rule, in particular, was bendable as I would soon come to find when I learned of the next sister in line to hunt Eri down. This was because it wasnt one sister. It was a pair of twins; they were born joined together by ones left and the others right arm. Their names were Riley and Fife, the two of them were just three years older than Eri. Apparently, the two of them had distanced themselves from the family, like Lia did. Because of this, Eri had no idea where they were. Nor what they would be capable of. Turns out, this was a common theme among most of the sisters. A lot of characters, races, factions, zones, story lines, etc. would need elaboration, re-working, and meaningful player interactivity (because you are no longer just a faceless murder hobo playing through a one-size fits all radiant quest line. In this thread, I am going to share my thoughts mainly around Stormwind, but also generally the Alliance and the Eastern Kingdoms. The Eastern Kingdoms The decades of turmoil, strife, and calamities of the Great Wars have left the Eastern Kingdoms in a state of catastrophic crisis. Lordaeron, once the father to the Alliance's leadership and power, now lies in ruins, with its remnants struggling to survive, and many more fled south as refugees in a sad mirror to the exodus of Stormwind in the First War. Alterac, recently annexed into Lordaeron, fairs little better, with its settlements assaulted and destroyed, but with its extreme mountain terrain providing numerous hold outs for those survivors of determined flesh and indefatigable will. Gilneas holds out as an isolated bastion, closing its gates in an effort to stop the onslaught of the plague, and the King calls upon the greatest generals and wizards of the Kingdom to devise stratagems and tactics to overcome the insurmountable dark forces arrayed against them. But as the wise masters say, It is the greatest of minds whose blunders are most terrible. Dalaran and its mages know this truth better than any as they balance their arcane efforts on a razor's edge that might save the Eastern Kingdoms, or hurry its doom. Stromgarde was largely saved from direct onslaught by the Scourge and the Burning Legion with Grand Marshal Garithos' Alliance forces turning back the tide at Thoradin's Wall. But notable forces sent to aid Lordaeron were lost, and worse others, leaders and soldiers, abandoned the continent entirely to flee west into unknown waters. King Thoras Trollbane died under mysterious circumstances, and the vengeful forest trolls took their opportunity to strike, along with the help of ogres. Stromgarde lost many of its holdings and was barely holding on, unable to provide support to its allies or launch counterattacks against its enemies. Kul Tiras lost its King and half its fleet along with its most veteran and elite soldiers when Daelin Proudmoore went on an insane quest across the world to find his wayward daughter and never returned. With so many losses, the remaining Kul Tiran forces, under the weak leadership of Katherine Proudmoore, were dis-organised and suffered numerous defeats. Barely able to keep control of Kul Tiran waters, they could do little to help those under siege by the Scourge and the Burning Legion other than ferrying refugees from northern ports like Southshore to ones further south like Menethil Harbour and Stormwind. With in-fighting among the Kul Tiran noble houses for power, and the limited viable real estate upon the Kul Tiran islands, few refugees were welcomed into Kul Tiran ports themselves save for the men press-ganged into naval service in a desperate attempt to make up their devastating losses. Stormwind, like Kul Tiras, had a King foolishly lost at sea and a black cabal of degenerate nobles vying for power at the expense of the Kingdom itself. Stormwind tried to shut itself to the refugees, but too many had already arrived and flooded the city before the dis-organised and corrupt Regency Council could take any actual action to prevent it. The lands of Stormwind are beset from all sides by numerous issues. Some fanon follows as much of Stormwind's lore is simply empty. The noble assembly lacks characters, the fiefdoms lack definitions and parameters, the world lacks characters beyond questgivers who simply tell you to kill enemies and collect things, so I am forced to fill in some blanks. I have had to invent numerous nobles because most are unnamed, and those that are are inevitably evil or corrupt so there are none to play the roles of moderates or allies. Stormwind Political Factions: Fordragonians a. k. a Loyalists Ostensibly led by Regent-Lord Bolvar Fordragon, but led in fact by Katrana Prestor, they are composed mainly of the nobility based in Stormwind City and Elwynn Forest. They control Stormwind City, the Stormwind Army proper. Publicly they prioritize the safety of the boy Prince Anduin and that Varian will return soon, where then he will lead Stormwind in facing the many threats in the realm. To that end, they keep the entire Stormwind Army garrisoned in and around the capital to the misfortune of the rest of the Kingdom. They follow the Church of the Holy Light as written in the Tome of Divinity. Their Virtues: Respect, Tenacity and Compassion. They worship no gods. Tullians a. a Moderates The silent majority: difficult to persuade, unwilling to risk themselves, and generally in support of the status quo simply out of passivity and self-preservation. Count Markus Tullian is a reserved and cunning man, respected for his military leadership in the First and Second Wars as well as his shrewd maneuverings in the noble assembly. Though he leads no formal coalition, he is the de facto leader of the moderates. What he says will sway most on the fence and most often he calls for caution and inaction, to the benefit of the hegemony and to the detriment of all calling for change. Garithonians a. a Opposition Led by Baron Standhaft Garithos, they are composed mainly of nobility far from the protection and control of Stormwind City, as well as those of foreign birth. They demand action be taken against the various threats across the kingdom and foment discontent about Bolvar's failure to defend the land and its people. To that end, Standhaft Garithos leads his house men-at-arms to set the lands to rights personally and they recruit from among foreign refugees and those locals they aid. They question the Church of the Holy Light's doctrine and advocate a return to the pre-First War era worship of the old human god: Tyros. Their Virtues: Strength, Honour, Courage, Mastery, and Faith. *In my fanon I give name and origins to the now retconned human god from Warcraft 1. The House of Nobles Being the center of the kingdom, Stormwind is obviously the center of power as well, with the king and the House of Nobles residing in the city. However, the noble class is experiencing something of an existential crisis. Namely, the question of 'what is it to be a noble. In the kingdom's early days, the ideas of landed nobility and feudalism served to expand Stormwind into the strongest of the human kingdoms, in spite of its isolation from the others. Nobles held land, were trained in battle, and raised and trained levies to support the Crown and tame the troll-held wilderness that was the land. That martial tradition held through the Brotherhood of the Horse, Stormwind's knightly order, and allowed the nobility a measure of pride and honor even as the kingdom transitioned to a more absolute monarchy, where power was centralized around the Crown, and the army became an institution of the kingdom itself, rather than a composite of a multitude of separate forces. That knightly order, of course, came to a crashing end with the Horde, and the destruction of the kingdom. The new nobility is made up of a mix of survivors of the old, a generation past since wartime, and a number of uplifted knights, merchants, and generally anyone considered of possible value to the rebuilding and expanding kingdom. The old Brotherhood of the Horse is no more, and nothing ever rose to take its place. Likewise, with the deaths of most of the old martial nobility, and a kingdom with a centralized military, there's little purpose to being a noble beyond what they have. Land, money, and power, and the former two are valued only in their influence on the latter. The House of Nobles is a ruthless bunch. Free from the threats facing the kingdom, they spend their days in a never-ending competition, a game where the power of the house is wielded on behalf of the rich, and those smart enough to be on the verge of becoming rich. New blood entering the house usually involves spilling old blood, usually by using mercantile tactics to usurp lands, holdings, and trade connections, but sometimes literally. Less scrupulous nobles maintain strong ties with the criminal underworld. Bazil Thredd maintains an, ostensibly anyway, Defias empire with enough noble backing to ensure little interference from the Stormwind Guard, the ghettos and rundown sections of the city acting as a small kingdom under his control where he can operate free of rivals. Lady Prestor a. a Onyxia: At the center of all this of course, is Onyxia. In her role as Lady Prestor, she's the de facto ruler of the house, with both the fiscal and magical connections to ensure that whomever she wishes to rise, rises, and whomever she wishes to fall, falls. Aside from idle pleasure, she uses this control to ensure a sort of complacency. Even as the kingdom suffers, the nobles want for nothing, and any misfortunes that do fall upon them can be laid at the feet of a fellow noble's machinations. With so many foes inside the city, none see the need to address any foes outside of it, and attempts to do so are labeled as attempts to gain power and glory fighting non-threats, and the ringleaders quashed by the rule of the vast majority. To mundane eyes she is a powerful and influential woman, but beneath the mask she is the black dragon Onyxia. Toiling towards her own dark machinations and in competition with her brother Nefarian, she at once seeks Stormwind's ruin and the growth of her own power. Tainted by the Old God's corruption, her plans often lack sense, but her extreme cunning, guile, and dark magics keep her plots from being revealed, even if they fail to actualize. (And lastly,
