I don't know about y'all but after the disappointing season and the mind-boggling drama surrounding AB that we'll be hearing about ad nauseam for the foreseeable future, I'm ready to look forward to next season and put this all in the rear view. So what follows is just one idiot fan's assessment of the team as it currently stands, through free agency and up to the draft where I'll try my hand at an excessively early mock draft (seriously, so many players haven't even declared yet this whole exercise is essentially pointless. But fun! Just like football in general, I guess). So without further ado let's begin with looking at each position group. Oh, and I'm not going to get too into the weeds with the salary cap, projecting FA salaries, stuff like that. Not for now, at least. * Note: I'm using Spotrac for my list of Steelers FAs QB Ben Roethlisberger Josh Dobbs Mason Rudolph Free Agents: None With Ben already declaring that he will return for the 2019 campaign, and with no pending FAs, the Quarterback position is set. Looking to the future, I doubt Dobbs has the ability to be a full time starter and believe the Steelers likely look at him as a cost-efficient backup with some upside. Since no one outside the facility has seen Rudolph throw a ball since preseason, we'll know more about his viability as Ben's replacement come next camp. As it stands, the odds the Steelers draft a QB this year or sign one as a FA are approaching zero. RB James Conner Jaylen Samuels Trey Edmunds Free Agents: Le'Veon Bell, Stevan Ridley Starting with the FAs, I think you'll see the Steelers say goodbye to both Bell and Ridley. Bell is, well, obvious (I think the team will be happy to receive a 2020 compensatory pick in his stead and not go through the will-he-won't-he drama again this offseason), and Ridley played his way off the team with two costly fumbles, an issue that plagued his time in New England as well. Outside of those two, I think it's likely Edmunds makes his way back to the Practice Squad as the Steelers will look to sign a veteran, reliable third back, someone like Benny Cunningham from the Bears or even Buck Allen from the Ravens. There are some interesting RB prospects in the draft this year (Rodney Anderson, Darrell Henderson, Benny Snell, etc) but I think with the young core of Conner and Samuels both having strong seasons, the Steelers would be wise to invest draft capital elsewhere, and sign a stable vet on the cheap. FB Roosevelt Nix Free Agents: None If only the team were made up of 53 Roosevelt Nixes. WR Antonio Brown JuJu Smith-Schuster James Washington Ryan Switzer Free Agents: Darrius Heyward-Bey, Justin Hunter, Eli Rogers Oy. Y'know what, let's start with FAs because that's an easy conversation. I think you re-sign Eli Rogers as his return at the end of the season went better than expected and he's the only true slot receiver on the team (JuJu and AB are both great in the slot but too valuable to line up there consistently). Though I've loved DHB's contributions on ST (well, less so this year) I think he and Justin Hunter are easy to let go of. Lastly, I should mention that PS WRs Trey Griffey (son of Ken Griffey, Jr for those who didn't know) and Tevin Jones signed futures contracts this week so they'll be around during camp, as well. I liked what I saw out of Tevin Jones during camp and preseason this year so I wouldn't be shocked to see him stick. Okay, let's talk about the elephant in the room. After yesterday's press conference I'd say the odds of AB getting traded increased. I was surprised by just how exhausted Tomlin seemed with him both in his words and demeanor when discussing AB. Now, it would only make sense to trade AB after June 1 when, as I understand it, the cap hit for doing so would go down to $7m from like $21m. And June is a LONG time from now, so let's see if cooler heads prevail. But if you'd asked me two days ago if the Steelers would consider trading Brown I would have laughed. Not so much today. Anyway, even if the saga resolves without trading the clear-cut #1 receiver in the league, I think the Steelers will take a shot on a WR in the draft. How early depends on whether or not they have AB. I love JuJu, both as a player and a person, but if he's going to assume the mantle of #1 on the team, he's going to need to beat double teams more consistently, an issue that reared its head against the Bengals. Another potential sore spot could be the red zone. Even though Fichtner did a great job fixing the red zone passing game (when Ben wasn't throwing costly RZ interceptions), losing Brown would highlight the Steelers lack of size at the position (Brown being able to win cleanly in tight areas combined with good scheming covers this deficit). Lastly, I'm excited to see what a year of offseason development, and hopefully growth in confidence after a strong end to 2018, brings Washington, and I like Switzer as a returner and part-time gadget player on offense. Bottom line, regardless of the Brown situation, I think the Steelers take a WR in the draft, and maybe kick the tires on a FA like Breshad Perriman or Chris Conley for depth. TE Vance McDonald Free Agents: Jesse James, Xavier Grimble, Jake McGee Obviously the Steelers will need to address the TE position as, well, they have three times as many players on the FA list than the roster (not counting Bucky Hodges, who I think ended up signing a futures contract). McDonald took a step up this year as he was able to both stay healthy and show improved hands. I honestly don't have any strong opinions on Grimble - whose boneheaded play in Denver may have outweighed any previous contributions - or Jake McGee. I think re-signing James would be fine as long as it doesn't cost much, but I'd be looking to replace him either in FA or through the draft. In terms of FA, Demetrius Harris has always struck me as a guy just about to put it all together in KC. I think the Bengals will try to re-sign C. J. Uzomah after he filled in for the injured Tylers in Cincy, but if they don't I'd like him as a James-level replacement. Offensive Tackle Alejandro Villanueva Marcus Gilbert Chuks Okorafor Jerald Hawkins Joseph Cheek Free Agents: Matt Feiler While the Steelers are littered with talent across the roster, this section kicks off the group that is the team's definite strenght: the offensive line. It's hard to imagine this group regressing much next season, even if there's a fairly decent chance the Steelers cut Marcus Gilbert, which I think would save them close to $5m against the cap. And while I believe that Gilbert is a top 5 RT in the league when healthy, he's never healthy. As they say, availability is the best ability. After Matt Feiler, who is an exclusive rights FA and therefore nearly a lock to be re-signed, had a pretty good season filling in for Gilbert, I think the Steelers plan will be to enter camp with Feiler, Okorafor and Hawkins in an open battle for the RT position. And honestly that approach should work just fine. Especially if the Steelers are able to retain the services of Mike Munchak as the position coach, there's no need to spend on the open market when they have two, potentially three, viable options in house already. On the other side of the line, Villanueva just enjoyed his best season yet as a pro, deserving of a Pro Bowl bid. His continued growth and leadership on the line will be important because... Offensive Guard David DeCastro Free Agents: Ramon Foster, BJ Finney.. Steelers are almost certainly going to lose Ramon Foster to free agency. Which is a shame because the undrafted Foster has become the silent linchpin of the line. Neither a fan favorite physical monster like Villanueva nor a highly-touted high draft pick like Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro and Marcus Gilbert, Foster has chiseled out an admirable career on toughness, communication and excellent technique. It will be hard to watch him go but Foster, also the team's NFLPA rep, clearly knows his value and is willing to test it on the open market. I'd expect the Steelers to make a respectful offer and then wait and see what the market for Foster looks like. I think a desperate team like the Giants or the Cardinals offers a contract the Steelers can't hope to match so be prepared to see Finney lining up between Villanueva and Pouncey next season. In terms of depth, the Steelers will need to sign or draft somebody to make up for the loss of a body. My guess is a marginal veteran who will be considered cut-able after the draft. Center Maurkice Pouncey Ben loves him, you love him, I love him - everyone loves Maurkice Pouncey! He's great! BJ Finney was also the backup center, so if the Steelers indeed need to replace Ramon Foster with him, they'll need a new backup center. Ideally, someone who can swing both G/C positions, as is the Steelers preference. This would most likely come from the draft unless the Steelers are excited about Patrick Morris or R. Prince, both of whom signed futures contracts. Defensive Line For brevity (ha) I'm going to do this group as one Cameron Heyward Stephon Tuitt Javon Hargrave Free Agents: Tyson Alualu, Daniel McCullers, LT Walton The top three of Heyward, Tuitt and Hargrave challenge the offensive line as the best position group on the team. It feels like every year we're optimistically waiting for Tuitt to take the leap to the next level, but even without that jump he's still a top defensive end in the league. Consistency is also an issue for Hargrave, but he is turning into a dominant new-wave 3-4 NT. His lateral ability is second-to-none and he's developing as a pass rusher as well. And I love Cam Heyward. As steady a leader, on and off the field, as the Steelers have had. I don't think anyone would be especially sad to see the three FAs go. Alualu is a decent run stopper
