José José, the Mexican crooner known as the “Prince of Song, ” whose melancholic love ballads earned him an adoring fan base and whose dozens of albums sold millions of copies around the world, has died at a hospital in South Florida. He was 71. The Mexican artists’ association ANDI confirmed the death in a Twitter post on Saturday but did not specify when he died. Multiple media outlets said the cause was pancreatic cancer, which was first diagnosed in 2017. José José sang technically difficult songs with a powerful voice that ranged over a wide register, including baritone and lyric tenor. He climbed to the top of the Latin charts in the 1970s with songs like “ El Triste ” (“The Sad Man”) and “ Amar y Querer ” (“Love and Want”). His yearning, heartfelt songs were enduringly popular and covered by contemporary artists like Marc Anthony and Cristian Castro. “We recorded important songs by important musicians, ” José José said of his lasting appeal in an interview with Billboard magazine. “One of the advantages I’ve had as an interpreter ? because I’m not a composer ? is I’ve had the fortune of working with great composers. Armando Manzanero, Rafael Pérez Botija, Manuel Alejandro: These are the people who have built my career. ” José José also found fans in Japan, Russia and other countries, and clubgoers across Latin America copied his sartorial elegance ? bespoke suits accented with bow ties, pocket handkerchiefs and silk scarves. His death elicited tributes from artists and politicians. Speaking to reporters, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico called José José “an extraordinary singer” who “made a lot of people from my generation cry and be happy. ” The Latin music star Gloria Estefan said on Twitter, “He squeezed our hearts with his unmistakable voice. ” José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz was born on Feb. 17, 1948, into a family of musicians in Mexico City. His mother, Margarita Ortiz Pensado, was a concert pianist; his father was a tenor in the National Opera of Mexico. His father abandoned the family when José was young, but the singer nevertheless added the second José to his name in his honor. José was 17 when his father died. “I wanted to honor the memory of my father, who was a great opera singer and died very young, without knowledge of my success, ” he told The Associated Press in 2005. “Since I inherited his voice, this is recognition of that inheritance. ” José José sang in cafes before founding a rock group called the Heart Breakers, which released an unsuccessful album in the mid-1960s. His solo career took off with a single called “La Nave del Olvido, ” or “The Ship of the Forgotten”; it peaked in the 1980s with albums like “Secrets, ” his best-selling collaboration with the Spanish composer and producer Manuel Alejandro. José José was nominated for a Grammy multiple times but never won the prize. The Latin Recording Academy recognized him with a Musical Excellence Prize at the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards ceremony. That same year he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2005 the Latin Recording Academy named him its person of the year. “His distinctive style ? subtle and volcanic all at once ? left an indelible imprint on every single song he touched, ” the music writer Ernesto Lechner wrote for the Academy at the time. “His singing is inherently introspective and melancholy. José José has a poet’s voice. ” He told his fans of his pancreatic cancer in a video message in March 2017. Long before that diagnosis, he struggled with depression and substance abuse. His addiction reached its nadir in the early 1990s, when, homeless, he began sleeping in a car on the outskirts of Mexico City. Friends intervened and took José José to an addiction treatment center in the United States. After completing treatment he began orchestrating a comeback, a potentially fraught experience for someone new to sobriety. “I believed that I had the weapons needed to stay sober, ” he told The Los Angeles Times in 1995, but, he added: “What if you go out and nobody cares about your music anymore? I would’ve died of sadness. ” His substance abuse led in 1993 to the dissolution of his 18-year marriage to the model Anel Noreña, with whom he had two children, José Joel and Marisol. In 1995 he married Sarita Salazar, a Cuban-American he had met in treatment. The couple had a daughter, Sara, the next year. There was no immediate word on his survivors. José José continued recording and performing for years, but in time he found it difficult to sing. The Greek composer and pianist Yanni said in a video posted to Twitter that it had taken José José seven days to prepare for a concert with him in 2008. “That was an act of bravery on his part, ” Yanni said. “He fought really hard for every word, for every sound. ” Last year Telemundo broadcast a telenovela based on José José’s life. His breakout hit, “La Nave del Olvido, ” appeared on the soundtrack for Alfonso Cuarón’s Academy Award-winning film “Roma” (2018). José José told Billboard in 2003 that it was only natural that new generations had embraced his ballads. “When young people fall in love, they start to understand my music, ” he said.
