Director HE Amjad Khan’s ambitious biopic Gul Makai takes on the Taliban in the trailer, depicting the barbarism and brutality with a vehemence that would be much appreciated in today’s climate. But then, of course, this is how it is. This is what happened in Malala’s life. The trailer opens with Malala’s father the very talented Atul Kulkarni (Malala’s mother is also played by a powerhouse Divya Dutta) asking her father about Helen Keller, who says Malala’s progressive dad, was a born fighter. So is Malala. The film’s trailer wastes no time in opening up Malala’s world of oppression into a universal fight for freedom…The freedom to be educated, to be freed from the shackles of radicalism and conservatism. Underprivileged girls are denied the right to education in both India and Pakistan. They threw acid on Laxmi Agarwal’s face. They gunned down Malala. Luckily both survived. Malala’s inspirational tale had to be told. I am glad it’s being done, albeit in a language that appears far more shrill than what Meghna Gulzar has attempted in Chhapaak. But that’s okay. High or low notes, it should be a music that needs to be heard. And Gul Makai makes its point loud and clear. Radical forces can’t be indicted in subtle tones. The tone adopted in Gul Makai is aggressive and raring for a fight. The? don’t-you-dare-me? attitude? gives the trailer? a? sharp cutting edge even? when? the fundamentalists shot in arching clusters, are shown as book-burning, beard-espousing ? despots. Gul Makai has an important message waiting for us when it releases on January 31(alongside Saif Ali Khan’s playboys-will-be-boys saga Jawani Jaaneman, chichorepan intended). Just how deep the narration will wound our desensitized civilization will depend entirely on how much of Malala’s truth the director has brought to the screen without losing sight of the humanism the real Malala so softly yet persuasively espouses. As for newcomer Reem Sheikh’s Malala act, the debutante seems to be adequately armed with the real Malala’s charm. But would Reem be able to hold the plot together into a coherent comprehensive portrait of a teenager who took on the Taliban? For all the latest India News, Follow India Section. Gul Makai Movie Synopsis Gul Makai?is the story of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. The film is set in strife-torn Pakistan. Malala Yousafzai (Reem Shaikh) lives with her father (Atul Kulkarni), mother (Divya Dutta) and two little brothers, Khushal (Khushmeet Gill) and Atal (Dhwij Mehta), in the SWAT valley of Pakistan. Her grandmother Gul Makai ?is the story of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Her grandmother (Kamlesh Gill) comes visiting them. The Taliban has made life hell for the liberal Pakistanis in SWAT valley as they don’t want girls to be educated and want Muslims to shun music and entertainment. Ziauddin Yousafzai is the forward-thinking principal of Khushal School. His school-going daughter, Malala, is also independent in her thinking. In fact, Malala writes a newspaper column, condemning the atrocities and murders of the Talibans. Since she writes under the pen name of Gul Makai, Gul becomes an overnight star. Conditions worsen in the valley so much that schools are forced to close down and ultimately, the area where the Yousafzais live has to be evacuated. However, Ziauddin Yousafzai, with like-minded people, continues his tirade against the Talibans. Once people return to the valley and schools reopen, the Talibans target Malala and shoot at her. She is hospitalised and saved. She ultimately becomes a young star who dared to stand up against international terrorists. She is given the Nobel Peace Prize and receives a number of international honours. The Swat Valley in North-Western Pakistan where she lived was totally under the yoke of the Taliban who were dead against a secular education for girls. Malala blogged for the BBC Urdu service under the pseudonym Gul Makai, the name of a heroine from a Pashtun folk tale. In 2012 a militant boarded her school bus and opened fire, wounding her as well as two of her friends. She was taken to a military hospital and was later flown to Birmingham for further treatment. The timely action saved her life. Hers is an inspiring life indeed and kudos to director? H. Amjad Khan for attempting to showcase it. His heart certainly was in the right place when he started the project. It went through a severe development hell and took many years in the making and as a result the end product is a disjointed piece of work. Attention to detail was sorely missing. For instance, in a scene where textbooks were being burnt by the militants one could see that they were of Navneet Publications. How hard was it to acquire some genuine Pakistani textbooks? Some characters speak with a distinct Marathi accent and even look like they belong to Maharashtra police rather than being members of the Pakistani army. Instead of making a film about a sensitive girl the director has chosen to give it a masala potboiler treatment. The terrorists lurk around carrying huge guns like B movie villains killing anyone they dislike on a whim. And the whole counter strike by the Pakistani army gets so much glorification that you feel like you're watching a war film. It's Uri part two but with Pak army as the hero. We're sure that wasn't the director's intention. After you get over the shock of inadvertently watching a war film under the guise of watching a Nobel Laureate's biopic, you spare a thought towards Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, two eternally professional actors having the ability to rise above insipid scripts. They play Malala's father and mother and have given the film everything they have got and more. The scene where they break down hearing news of an attack on her gets to you. Newcomer Reem Shaikh tries hard to become Malala but the effort shows. There is a clip from a speech by the real Malala at the end credits which offers more impact about education of girls worldwide than?this two hour film because it showed a person's burning desire to bring about a change. Sadly that intensity was absent in this popcorn version of events. REVIEW: Born in a small hamlet named Mingora, near the beautiful Swat valley of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai (Reem Shaikh) has been academically inclined from a tender age. But, despite her father Ziauddin Yousafzai’s (Atul Kulkarni) unwavering faith in her and his community, their world comes crumbling down when the anti-education extremist group, Taliban, hijacks their otherwise peaceful valley and puts an indefinite ban on education for the girl child. The mood of ‘Gul Makai’ is focused on the brutality that the local town-dwellers were subjected to during the Taliban occupation of Swat. Its tonality emphasises on one little girl’s unabashed and unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge ? not just for her own sake, but for every other girl child around her. True, the subject of this biographical piece is fascinating but, H. E Amjad Khan’s approach towards the same does not translate onto the big screen. For one, the narrative is messy from the word go and although Khan tries to juxtaposition Malala’s inner turmoil with the war waged by the Talibans, he ends up concocting a story that is half-baked, and riddled with glaring flaws and discrepancies. And, barring seasoned actors Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, the star cast (including the protagonist) has failed to deliver believable performances. In fact, Reem’s version of Malala neither renders a cathartic experience for its viewers, nor does it evoke any sense of real emotions. Also, the background score is a replica of the 80s war films in a not-so-flattering way and the haphazard writing goes on for 132 minutes, making ‘Gul Makai’ a tedious watch. It is quite disappointing that the film does not mention any of the controversies Malala has courted along the way, which is hard to overlook given the fact that the film is biographical in nature. ‘Gul Makai’ could have been a very strong story, but the initial spark fizzles out when translated on screen; the takeaway here is close to nothing.
