Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Like Imperial Japan of the time, this film was overly ambitious. It tries to carry a main plot and two subplots and just doesn't have the firepower to handle it. You are introduced to all 3 early on (Investigation of war crimes, general staff back-stabbing and rivalry, romance in flashback) but by the halfway point, the romance takes center stage for some reason and other two just sort of dissolve into nothing, leaving star power like Tommy Lee Jones wasted in the role. One gets the feeling that writers had something much grander in mind. A long epic, perhaps, but maybe a studio boss decided it needed to be short and sweet and a whole lot of things ended up on the cutting room floor. To be honest, the fictional tale of romance (General Bonner Fellers was actually married) must have been added to try and stave of being classified as some dry docudrama, yet a docudrama would have been preferable in my opinion since this period of time is fascinating and has never really been dealt with in film with any level of detail. I gave two stars. One for acting which is fair to good, and one for the cinematography. The film "looks" good. Just a side note: I find it difficult or impossible to believe that a General on MacArthur's staff would just stroll around, alone, without some sort of attending soldiers or bodyguards in occupied territory. This bothered me throughout the film and I admit, it took me out of the film quite a bit when it happened, which was often. For the TLDR crowd: Missed opportunity. Potential good historical movie ends up being really kind of a boring lost romance tear jerker. If it's Prime free take a shot. If not, save your money. Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Tommy Lee Jones plays a fat, out of whack MacArthur. Normally I really like TLJ, but in this movie he did a sh--job. The movie bears no resemblance to what the immediate post-war world was like. Garbage like this always bothers me,, because those who didn't grow up having a full historical understanding of WW2 and the immediate post-war period, will take garbage like this to read as truth. If you want an depiction of what General MacArthur was like, post-war, watch Operation Chromite. You'll see an accurate MacArthur portrayed in that film - and watch some kick-ass sequences too. Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase One of my Uncles served under MacArthur and was appointed to set up the new banking system for Japan at the end of WWII. He later started the first US school of Banking at SMU. The last time I saw him alive we were in his library where I got to see one of only 2 knowing existing original declarations of war by Japan on the USA. It was fascinating read. To this day I have never been able to find a copy of it on the Internet. It was in both languages, side by side and basically claimed the US naval blocked on Japan was starving them for crude oil and was an act of war. I find it curious that in this day and age, no other copies or even internet versions are to be found. I found the debate and explanation by the Japanese general very enlightening, claiming that Japan only copied the fine US example, that Japan drove out earlier invaders of the east Pacific, Britain, US who drove Spain of the Philippines, and France earlier.... and that Japan had only used the fine US model as an example to follow. Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase In addition to this being a love story vs a war/history film, it probably goes without saying that Hollywood couldn’t resist getting in their own heavy slant on “history. ” You’ve been warned, but if you choose to watch anyway, you will note early on how an American general is lectured on how the world has always had its conquerors; he naturally has nothing of consequence to offer in the way of a rejoinder (certainly nothing to do with well-documented Japanese atrocities, etc). Then later, ironically enough, there are sideways apologies along the line of extreme devotion leading to atrocious criminality - pretty much anything is explainable/excusable/ long as the USA isn’t the one on trial. Thank you once again, Hollywood, for meeting and perhaps even exceeding every expectation you’ve so well established for yourselves on so many unfortunate fronts... Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2015 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I was torn between 3 or 4 stars. A good movie, well worth seeing. Superb historical drama, with a quick pace, which I appreciate (most 'historical' movies seem to drag in my humble opinion). Matthew Fox as the protagonist was well chosen, and Tommy Lee Jones did a passable job as General MacArthur. It was funny-- seeing the synopsis for the flick I got the impression that this was about MacArthur in his role as the new Shogun of Japan. I was pleasantly surprised that this was a movie about the very early days of the American occupation of Japan, with the emphasis on the transfer of power from the old guard to the new. I liked it. What I believed detracted from the story was the subplot of the pre-war romance between Fox's character and a Japanese woman. While necessary to explain how Fox (Brigadier General Fellers) ended up in the position he was in, I thought it was overdone and kind of sappy. Again, only MY opinion. Of historical note-- I'm sure because of time constraints, General Fellers' background story did not include that he had been with MacArthur as an aide in the Philippines before the war, and that Eisenhower did not like him so after an event where Fellers had been sending very accurate and detailed reports about British Army units in North Africa to superiors in Washington, the Germans had broken the encryption and read every single report sent, Eisenhower was only too happy to send Fellers elsewhere. Top international reviews 3. 0 out of 5 stars The potential was definitely there to make a great film. It is about whether or not to... Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2015 Verified Purchase I nearly gave it four stars, but in the end went for three stars. It's OK. The potential was definitely there to make a great film. It is about whether or not to try Emperor Hirohito for war crimes, and, for what it is worth, I think that General MacArthur's decision not to try him was the correct one. Wars will always happen, and this one was going to happen whoever gave the order to start it. The real question that should have been asked, in my opinion, is not whether he countersigned the order for Pearl Harbor, (he almost certainly did), but whether Hirohito was directly responsible for the atrocities committed by Japanese troops, (almost certainly not). Was the superficiality of the arguments and the investigation why this film failed? Probably not. Interwoven with that is a love story sub-plot. Personally, I suspect that the love story sub-plot was the reason why this film failed to gel. The love story sub-plot as presented in the film raised a lot of questions that simply weren't answered. 4 people found this helpful Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. 'General Douglas MacArthur' leads the post-war occupation force with the task of rebuilding 'Japan' His orders also include bringing both politicians and military responsible for the war and atrocities to book, the order also includes proving the 'Emperor' to be responsible. The Supreme Commander General MacArthur' instructs 'General Bonner Fellers' to collect the evidence and investigate the 'Emperor' to see if sufficient grounds can be found to effect charges against him. 'Bonner Fellers' had been chosen to lead the investigation because of his Knowledge of 'Japan' 'Bonner' prior to the outbreak of war had romantic links with 'Aya', now he's back in 'Japan' he try's to determine whether she'd survived. The film is based on real-events that took place after the 'Japanese' surrender. An absorbing and well portrayed account of the investigations into war-crimes after the surrender. Good picture and sound quality on the HD format. (wonder how many allied personnel would have been investigated had the outcome been a thought. ) Personally, as much as I like this type of drama, war itself is a criminal occurrence in my view. Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2018 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Seriously one of the greatest and most funny animated movies I have EVER seen. HILARIOUS!!! Half my sarcasm was developed from watching this movie as a kid. Die laughing every time I watch, pacing is amazing and lightning quick, story is great and emotional, and voice acting is top notch. This film holds a special place in my heart and always will. Fun for kids to watch for the animations, but smart and funny enough for grown ups to have a blast watching. Everyone is such a character, it's just too much fun. Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2014 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase The Emperors New Groove: A Disney movie quite unlike any other traditionally animated Disney movie you've ever seen, I really hope that one day The Emperor's New Groove starts to receive the love it deserves. With a rather strange, yet still strangely beautiful, style and no big musical numbers save one from the "theme guy" this feels more like a Pixar film mixed with some Loony Tunes which is no bad thing. The story revolves around the selfish Emperor Kuzco (voiced in a wonderfully amusing whiny manner by David Spade), a happy-go-lucky, carefree chap unphased by anything until he is turned into a llama by the adviser he fired (Yzma, voiced by Eartha Kitt). Once he realises the situation he has to enlist the help of Pacha (John Goodman) to get him back to his palace and make things right. Unfortunately, Pacha is one person who is in no hurry to see the emperor return thanks to Kuzco's selfish plans for Pacha's village that will lead to major upset and upheaval. Sounding a bit off the wall? You have no idea. This movie does it all. There are a succession of great verbal and visual gags, a number of lesser characters given moments to shine (including Pacha's family, a chatty squirrel and, of course, Yzma's assistant Kronk who is voiced by the excellent Patrick Warburton) and a constant sense of barely restrained anarchy. The fourth wall is broken, voiceovers are interrupted and even camera moves are criticised when things stray too far from the focus of the proceedings. All in all, it's fantastic fun. Kronk's New Groove: First of all, let me just say that Kronk's New Groove is very, very funny with a good amount of laugh out loud moments. Surely that is all that matters then, eh? Well, no. Compared to the first film, the story is pretty tepid. All of the previous characters return. Of course there is Kronk himself, along with Kuzco, Pacha and his family, the babbling squirrel and Yzma (who has now turned mostly back into a 'human' but still features a cat's tail and feline abilities. The movie tries to incorporate all of them into the story but nothing really sticks. It all just seems like an excuse for mayhem. As before, it is told in flashback with Kronk explaining how he ended up in such sorry circumstances. His dad is coming to visit him and he's afraid of the inevitable disapproval he'll get as all he's managed to do with his life is be a Junior Chipmunk Troup Leader and run a restaurant kitchen. His dad thinks that cooking and talking to animals isn't a 'real job' and won't give Kronk the big thumbs up until he's got his own house on a hill with loads of money. From this thin idea comes loads of deception, scheming and hijinks. And that's basically the movie. It IS packed full of hilarious moments and wonderful Looney Tunes-inspired humor like the first, but it just lacks that overall high-quality. Still, it's loads of fun and any fan of The Emperor's New Groove must give it a chance. Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2014 Format: DVD Verified Purchase While humor is a long running staple of Disney animated films, I can't think of any other entry in the company's catalogue that is a straight out comedy. Yes there's a plot, yes there's some heart, yes a lesson is learned but in the end job one of this film is to make you laugh. And it does that in spades. Energetic animation is topped off by pitch perfect voice work from the cast, with Patrick Warburton stealing the show as Kronk (no wonder the guy got his own spin-off film. ) And the great thing about the humor is that it's not juvenile and grating for adults, yet it's high energy enough for kids to enjoy even if some of the jokes are too meta for the really little ones. Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2020 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I grew up with this movie and watched it a ton growing up. I hadn't seen it in over ten years and still enjoyed it so many years later. When it left Netflix, I decided to buy a copy, as it is one of my girlfriend's favorite movies. We watch it about once a year, and I still enjoy the humor in my mid 20's. Overall, I am happy with my purchase, but I do believe it is back available on streaming services if you have a subscription. Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I love this movie. It is so funny and clever with a heartfelt change in the Emperor while not being too sugary sweet or slowed down by songs. Love Eartha Kitt as catwoman, I mean Yzma XD. Patrick Warburton is amazing as Kronk, his voice and the character's stupidity is edged out by his naivety that makes him likable. Squeaking, squeaker. Pacha is a seriously kind soul and love his family! A great, fun time with or without kids. Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase This is absolutely perfect. Yzma and Kronk? Dear Lord they are funny. The diner? Jumping rope? Hysterical. Tom Jones providing musical commentary? Comedic timing and delivery both verbal and animation? Really good stuff. Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018 Format: DVD Verified Purchase This is one of those movies that could have so easily gone goofy or dumbed down but it went clever and funny. There is actual character growth that other non-kid films could learn a thing or two from. The four lead voice actors are in my mind legends in their own right and this movie gives them a chance to shine, the best example is the interaction at the diner, great part that always gives laugh. This is one of those movies if the kid gets it in their must see all the time lists you don't mind it the 20th time around, stiff funny. Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2016 Format: DVD Verified Purchase Don't let the cartoony cover fool you. This movie is an all-time favorite of my whole family. Every time I see it, I find some background event or some character expression I didn't notice before, and it is hilarious. I often cite this movie as proof that comedy doesn't have to rely on the cheap shots of innuendoes and profanity. If only Disney continued this style! Foolish but it's fun! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 13, 2001 Verified Purchase This is definitely not your usual Disney cartoon. Yes, there is a little of the usual sugar in the depiction of Pacha's family - but we soon get over that as the story gets driven by the lunatic antics of Ysma and the amiable (he's just too plain dim to be truly evil) Kronk. Once the chase is on (and the diner scene is a SCREAM) we have a display of slapstick worthy of a 1920's silent two-reeler. Even when Kuzco finally redeems himself (sometimes cringing time with Disney) the comedy soon snaps into place again. So! This is an utterly stupid movie that you will want to watch again and again and again ad infinitum.
