Nan Treveni Achna's The Photograph (2008) is a very profound and very contemplative study of the human condition. The thematic structure of this excellent film is rooted in an integrated symbology at its core. A symbology consisting of railroad tracks, trains, photos, the act of photography, the profession of photography, Buddhist altars, prostitution, old age and impending death, youth, maternal love, unfulfilled wishes, the desire to leave a legacy, psychological fixation, fear, "ancestor worship", optimism, resignation, and much more. This fine filmmaker skillfully uses this system of symbols to spin a compelling tale of life, through a dramatic coupling of two very unlikely partners. The resulting dramatic production is a veritable portrait, a photograph itself, if you will, of the dilemmas and paradoxes inherent in human existence. The Photograph (2008) is a very important instance of Cinematic Art, at least in my opinion. 20 Stars!!!

I found it to be quite different from the usual American style of film, but it didn't take long for the story to grab me. I found it very acted out very naturally as if you were immersed in the lives of two lonely people who just happen to find each other by chance. The cinematography makes you feel as if you are going along for the ride as you spend time with the characters immersed in their lives, families and way of life. The loneliness of the lead characters is a tangible thing that touches your heart. This is definitely a wonderful foreign film. There are subtitles, but they are easy to read and follow along, especially given the slower pace of this beautiful film. No, this isn't a Hollywood blockbuster, but this is definitely worth watching, especially if you like a film with a lot of humanity and hope for love. After all, love is timeless and universal in any language. I will definitely be looking for more films by this Director and story teller. She never asked him about the pictures and we never got to really see them. And we never knew what transpired in the room of his apartment. I also finally get the end which was what he said all the love stories ended the same and because he still had not risen up the ranks of wealth it all looked hopeless and did not look like they had a future unless he was able to revive the cola business. What it did have is the gradual development of intimacy, based on a series of small kindnesses. This movie reminded me why we take the time to wrap special gifts. He finds her only to have her pose as his girlfriend so his grandmother stops pushing him to enter into an agreement of marriage. Eventually, they develop feelings for one another, though I am not sure it is love that they find. Rather a mutual bond develops, only to be caught up in what is expected of fairy tale endings in modern times. The movie is quiet, and thoughtful, not dramatic by any means, but worth an evening or an afternoon of your time, if only to ponder own own circumstances of identity, duty, family, and marriage.
