I doubt that many of the reviewers on here have actually seen the stage production - I certainly haven't. This is essentially a stage production but with a well-imagined set, CGI costumes and effects.

It is true that to understand what is going on in the earlier parts of the film, you have to listen reasonably closely to the lyrics. There are plenty of songs in quick succession, some of which are lengthy and may test the concentration. But the songs - which is what a musical is principally about - do stand up. For those that argue that the story is on the thin side, how come the theatre production is one of the longest on both Broadway and in London's West End? What did you expect? This glamourised version of the stage production is put together well, the CGI'ed cat costumes are authentic, some of the dancing and singing is extremely good, particularly that of Francesca Hayward, who plays the white kitten, Victoria - and in the same way that a new kitten brings energy to a household, she brings new energy to the Jellicle group. Taylor Swift, as well as co-writing the new song, Beautiful Ghosts, also produces a good cameo, and the tap dancing of Steven McRae (Skimbleshanks) is worth watching too. The musical's high spot is undoubtedly the song 'Memory' and though the music swells beautifully and that top note is hit with awesome power by Jennifer Hudson, I could not help being distracted by her somewhat snotty face - you don't see such close-ups in the theatre - but I felt it was a tad unnecessary. On the whole though, I enjoyed the film, as did my teenage children. Certainly not the greatest film ever, but anyone who could only give this 1 out of 10 either does not appreciate music, or does not understand the limitations of putting a stage show on the big screen.
