Old Possums Book of Cats is the 3rd revelation of Christ. The 12 disciples of Jellicle, the Jellicle Cats. In the future, heaven got too crowded after the Book of Mormons came to pass. God became Jellicle, created the Heavyside Layer to roof heaven shut.
With the Heavyside Layer cemented atop top heaven, Satan got out of Earth. He became Macavity. Unknowing of this error, Jellicle destroyed the earth, but decided that he liked American Idol and Paula Abdul's take on it, so Jellicle brought Paula back in a new Jellicle form. When he discovers what has become of Macavity, concerned that he will lead many evil cats to Catnip, unfairly excluding Cats from Heaviside, he appoints Paula as Old Deuteronomy, to tell the world of the Great Jellicle's existence. Just like American Idol, only one will be chosen. To earn a new eternal life, cats must grapple with what they couldn't solve after the Book of Mormon came to pass: Human pride channeled into cats and their lives. We speak all of their names and evaluate the life they have chosen. When pride is broken & Grizabella is finally touched, her name spoken aloud, Paula Abdul, our John the Baptist, Old Deuteronomy, sends Grizabella to the Heaviside Layer as Jellicle planned for Grizabella. Das auf einer Gedichtsammlung von T. S. Eliot basierende Musical von Andrew Lloyd Webber ist bekannt dafür, ohne Dialoge und letztlich auch ohne Plot auszukommen. Hooper und sein Co-Autor Lee Hall (der auch für das Elton-John-Biopic Rocketman verantwortlich zeichnet) haben dem nicht viel hinzuzufügen. Sie erzählen lediglich die Geschichte der Jellicle-Katzen, die auf einer Müllkippe im London der Dreißigerjahre hausen, aus der Perspektive des weißen Kätzchens Victoria (Francesca Hayward, hauptberuflich Primaballerina beim Royal Ballet, in ihrer ersten Kinorolle). Ansonsten lässt sich weiterhin alles auf eine recht schlichte Formel herunterbrechen: Rund um den bevorstehenden Jellicle-Ball stellen sich diverse Katzen und Kater mit einem Song vor. Die Auserwählten steigen am Ende wortwörtlich in den Himmel auf. Jennifer Hudson, die für ihre Rolle in dem Musical Dreamgirls 2007 den Oscar für die beste Nebenrolle erhalten hatte, spielt Grizabella, die verstoßene und vom Schicksal gebeutelte einstige Glamour-Katze. Ihrer Interpretation des Megahits Memory (in der Vergangenheit unter anderem von Barbra Streisand und Angelika Milster gesungen) fehlt es jedoch an Subtilität. Judi Dench tritt auf als rot-getigerte Eminenz Old Deuteronomy (auf der Bühne wird die Rolle sonst immer von einem Mann besetzt), Rebel Wilson ist die Gumbie-Katze Jennyanydots und Idris Elba deren durchtriebener Gegenspieler Macavity. Ausgerechnet der Popstar Jason Derulo schlägt sich als lässiger Oberverführer Rum Tum Tugger darstellerisch am wackersten. Und Taylor Swift (die gemeinsam mit Lloyd Webber für Victoria den neuen Song Beautiful Ghosts komponierte) legt als Bombalurina einen gelungenen Auftritt hin. Ein Grund, warum Cats, das 1981 am Londoner West End seine Premiere hatte, bisher noch nicht fürs Kino adaptiert wurde, liegt sicher an den vierbeinigen Protagonisten selbst. Fellbesetzte Kostüme und Schnurrhaar-Make-up mochten bühnentauglich sein, aber auf der großen Leinwand wollte man sie sich lieber nicht vorstellen. Mit Kostümen und Make-up hält sich Hooper aber gar nicht erst lange auf, sondern setzt auf etwas, dass er "digitale Fell-Technologie" nennt ? einen kuriosen Hybrid irgendwo zwischen Faschingsverkleidung und Computerkreation. Die Gesichter der Schauspieler und Schauspielerinnen sehen bisweilen aus wie mit Photoshop ins detailliert-naturalistische Fell hineinmontiert.
