Hello, CSH fans. I'm making this thread to kind of serve as a flat explanation for some common questions surrounding the upcoming album, "Making a Door Less Open". I also hope this thread can serve as a hub for general questions about the album, as we have had many small threads about specific questions get asked that either don't provide accurate responses or answer some common questions and get swept away quickly. Note: I am NOT in direct contact with the band, so I may also be submit to some misinformation. I hope this thread can even help clarify on things I might have wrong! I have spent the time to gather some concrete information from multiple sources, so hopefully most of what I'm saying should be accurate. Album Versions To start, I want to talk about one of the bigger questions: what are the album versions Will has mentioned? Well, there's three definitive versions: the vinyl release, the CD release, and the digital release. The download codes and streaming are also digital releases. "Digital" is not used to represent the sound of the music; "digital" does not mean electronic sounds in this scenario. The three versions will be a little different based on if it's vinyl, CD, or digital. The CD release seem to be made more with the intention of listening to it in your car, as Will has stated recently in a tweet. That being said, some songs will stay the same, some will be slightly altered to fit this concept, and some will be adjusted completely. I don't have any details on which songs will experience which changes, but the most explicit example we do have is "Hymn" and "Hymn (Remix)". I'm not aware if the bonus acoustic tracks will also count towards this concept. All purchases of the album will supply you with codes to every track across the three mediums. You do not need to buy the vinyl to hear the vinyl versions. It is unclear how streaming will take this into effect, but the digital version seems to be the definitive version of the album. One last note is that the vinyl versions are all complete and ready to go, as well as the CD version. The digital version seem to be mostly done, however they are still in progress. Presale Codes The window for presale codes has unfortunately already ended. These codes were specifically just for early access on buying tickets for the tour, which you can still purchase here: 1 Trait Danger and "Hollywood" There's been a lot of talk around this topic already, which I'll address in two parts. The first being the misconception that "Making a Door Less Open" is a collab project between Car Seat Headrest and 1 Trait Danger, a goofy side project that the band, led by Andrew, as been working on for a couple of years now. If you don't know 1 Trait Danger, there's two albums available here:. In a recent interview, Andrew and Will confirmed there are more projects to come and there's a lot of ideas, as well as some lore they want to add for the existing characters. Among these characters, is a rabbit? dog? named Trait, to which Will has been dressing as at the live 1 Trait Danger shows. For the most part, the two projects seemed to be separate and unrelated. However, Will recently revealed to us fans that he intends to bring this character to Car Seat Headrest and make it his official live persona. In addition to this, Andrew and Will have briefly discussed parts of the writing process for both projects; it being that some ideas from each project have leaked into one another. This seems to be misinterpreted as Car Seat Headrest will now be playing 1 Trait Danger songs live, when it reality it just means some loose ideas for 1 Trait Danger songs may have morphed into a song that would be more fitting for Car Seat Headrest. This is something Will has always done with other projects: borrowing lines and chord progressions from older songs as well as using samples from later works and, most famously, a line from "Necks" by Naked Days. A 1 Trait Danger demo/concept sample even exists at the end of the Face to Face version of Bodys! This concept is not new to the band, nor should it be anything new to the fans. Everything being released is still Car Seat Headrest; there's just some stronger inspirations being pulled in. With all of that comes a new song on the album called "Hollywood", which was written by Will and Andrew together. An old demo of this song had previously been leaked and it has been teased live at the recent 1 Trait Danger shows because they've had fun playing it. This is NOT a 1 Trait Danger song, just a song with strong ties and inspirations from the 1 Trait Danger projects. It's not meant to be a joke song either, as really none of the lyrics would imply that it is; some just might be a little more fun than they are serious. Additionally, the leak that got out seems to be quite an old and outdated version. The song probably hasn't necessarily gone under huge changes or anything, but it could come out more different than we expect. A little more on Trait As previously mentioned, Trait is a character from 1 Trait Danger that Will has taken on as a persona live. Will has mentioned why he wanted to start wearing a mask on stage: because it helps him not feel so nervous and because it's fun. Will has always been a little shy on stage and is often shown to be more nervous or stoic than the rest of the band. Although his dancing has proven that he knows how to have fun on stages, he found ways to enjoy it even more. I think goal is for him to give us a better performance while he enjoys himself more, which honestly is more important than anything else. The band needs to like what they're doing, and for Will it includes putting on a mask. It's a change to embrace while we support the artist we all enjoy find what works best for him. He's still Will under the mask. It's the same as when he wears a full suit or when he does his hair in an interesting way or when grows a bit of a mustache: still Will. And for those wondering if the mask is going to muffle the vocals, you can hear on some of the recent 1 Trait Danger live videos that he sounds find. He wouldn't just throw a mask on and go wild on stage without making sure he sounded the way he wanted to sounds. They're not amateurs! Change and Fun If more than anything else, one of the themes the album and all this information shows is change. Car Seat Headrest is bringing in a fresh, new sound that separates them from what many thought they'd be following Teens of Denial (the band has actually been vocal about taking an electronic direction since 2015 so it's not much of a surprise to the active fans either). The songs are shorter and disconnected, with an emphasis on fun, which really is the core of this new area. They wrote songs that would sound more fun, that would be more fun to play live. Will is even dressing up in a way that would be more fun for him. 1 Trait Danger's presence is proof that the band is having fun and enjoying working together. People want to hate on these changes because they're new and unfamiliar, but there needs to be an understanding from the fans that these are all individual people living lives like the rest of us and want to have fun. They're not here to write a specific kind of music that applies to a niche group; their sound is constantly changing and always has since Car Seat Headrest began and will keep going until they end! They're here to enjoy themselves, and as fans you should be able to respect these changes, whether you're interested in them or not. You can think all of the changes are genuinely bad and a mistake, but if you're a true fan that cares about the band and the people in it, you should understand their point of view and respect them for doing what they want to do. I hope this write up helped answer some questions and cast a new light on the album if you didn't have the brightest image of it.
