I read in Wikipedia that they changed the ending to become more like Hollywood ending, but to be honest I prefer Stella leaving Stanley, at least for the film since I have just started reading the play. I feel like as an audience we're constantly put in Stella's shoes. I don't know if it's just me or not, but I feel like we're being manipulated about Stanley's character the whole time, like at one time we know he's clearly abusive and then forgive him when we're reminded that he does love Stella, and then we realise that he's abusive again, and so on. And we know that Blanche is sick, but we're not really sure what to do, how much is real and how much is not. We also are shocked and do not want to believe it, deeply disappointed but at the same time sympathise with her, when we find out her crime with her student and her other past, since we see how sick she is now. We're uncomfortable as well about the tension between Blanche and Stanley. Although, as an audience we are more advantaged than Stella since we know more than her, and may have more objective perspective than her. When she leaves her, it's also at the point where Stanley's abusiveness and male chauvinism are no longer doubtable and excusable for us the audience after what he's done to Blanche, so I feel that it's a really suitable ending. And I like her ascending the stairs. Staircase is really an interesting motif in old Hollywood movies regarding gender, like in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt as well (although it is more subtle in it) it's clear than here in this film the upstairs area is a sanctuary for Stella, and Eunice, and Blanche as well, as women holding on together.
