Directed by: Bertrand Bonello 861 votes France duration: 1 hours 43 minutes 2019 Fantasy. It is time Elijah is back. Never, ever drive off the road. That was the first rule I had written down. The road was bumpy and inhospitable. I held the steering wheel with such a feverish grip, that veins prominently bulged on my hands. I was driving on a narrow dirt road, full of potholes and fallen branches, a testament to its lack of usage. The trees on the side towered, encroaching above the road, effectively blocking any starlight from the dark sky above. It was pitch black and without the headlights of my car, I wouldn¡Çt see anything. I drove slowly, because the meager excuse of a road curved every now and again, often disappearing under a thick pile of leaves, before I caught its trace again in the distance, hoping not to end up in a ditch which I wouldn¡Çt be able to get my car out of. My headlights illuminated a thick row of trees ahead and I knew that the road had come to an end. I slowed down and then stopped my car entirely, scanning the area from left to right, to make sure there wasn¡Çt a pathway I may have potentially missed. I turned the key in the ignition and the engine sputtered out of life, leaving me in eerie silence. The lights disappeared, leaving me in utter darkness, until I manually turned them back on. In the moment of being in pitch black, a shiver ran down my spine. I grabbed my wallet and pulled out the photo of Alina. She was smiling in it in such a reassuring way, that it could cheer up the gloomiest of souls. She was so energetic back then, so full of life. It was my favorite picture of her. She was blushing in the photo from the cold. We were on vacation in Iceland, a place she always wanted to visit more than anything else. It was her birthday and I surprised her with tickets. She was so ecstatic when I told her the plan, she spent the next two hours checking online the place I booked. She always appreciated small gestures and gifts, so something like this launched her to the moon. Two days later, we were on a night cruise off Reykjavik in search of the Northern Lights. It was Alina¡Çs first time seeing the lights, so she was very excited. When she saw the shades of green and white stretched across the night sky in a shape that resembled a colossal beast, blending in with the infinite stars, she had a grin from ear to ear on her face. ¡ÈWow, look at that, David! ¡É She pointed over yonder, her cheeks blushing from the cold, as steady breaths left her mouth and disappeared in the air. She fumbled for her phone with the gloves and started snapping pictures. ¡ÈSee, aren¡Çt you glad now that I got you those phone-compatible gloves? ¡É I asked. ¡ÈYeah, they¡Çre so great! I don¡Çt have to take off and put on my glove every time I see something interesting. Which, over here, is like every minute or so. ¡É She took a picture of me. ¡ÈCome on, let¡Çs take a picture together. ¡É She said. I put my arm around her and she pursed her lips photogenically, as she snapped a picture of us, with the Aurora Borealis behind us. I kissed her and she took another picture like that. ¡ÈLet me take a picture of you. ¡É I said as I took her phone. Alina took off her winter hat and stood by the railing at the bow of the ship. She put her hands behind on the railing and slightly cocked her head, smiling at the camera. I snapped a few photos and I distinctly remember thinking how lucky I was to have her. I handed the phone back to her and we faced the green lights again, staring at the sky. The murmurs of the tourists around us filled the air, each group speaking in their own language. ¡ÈDo you think we can come back here again someday? ¡É Alina asked, as she stuffed the hat on her head, clumsily pulling it down to cover her ears. ¡ÈI thought you hated the cold? ¡É I grinned teasingly. ¡ÈPlease, Dave. It¡Çs so beauti-¡È Her sentence was caught off by a coughing fit. ¡ÈYou okay, honey? ¡É I asked. She nodded, clearing her throat. That was the start of our ordeal. I put the photo in the chest pocket of my jacket. I proceeded to pull out the wrinkled, folded-up piece of paper from my wallet. I unfolded it carefully and read what was written in sloppy handwriting: When you reach the end of the road, leave your car behind, but leave the lights on. Start your stopwatch and keep walking in a straight line until you see a narrow entrance to a cave. If five minutes have gone by and you haven¡Çt found the entrance, follow your car¡Çs headlights back and try again. I already knew the text word by word, because I¡Çve read it so many times. But I had to be sure. I can¡Çt screw this up, everything depended on it. I folded up the paper and put it in the pocket of my jeans. I opened the glovebox and took out the flashlight. After a click to see if it works, I got out of the car, leaving the key in the ignition ? no one would be stealing it here, not in this unfriendly forest. When I opened the door, I expected to be hit with the sounds of animal life, crickets and such. But there was nothing. It was so deafeningly silent, that I felt compelled to clear my throat, just to make sure I hadn¡Çt lost my hearing. Something was terribly wrong here, I could feel it in the heaviness which permeated the air. I scanned the tree-line with my flashlight, just to assure myself nothing was lurking from behind a tree. Once my mind was calm, I turned to the direction my car was facing, set the timer on my watch and started walking. The shuffling of leaves under my feet filled the air, as I carefully strode forward, cautious not to step into a hidden ditch and twist my ankle. The beams of my car illuminated far ahead, but they gradually dissipated and then completely disappeared, leaving me with my flashlight as the only source of light in the devouring darkness of the woods. I did my best to resist the urge to look around, in fear that I would inadvertently start walking in the wrong direction. I glanced at the timer. 2:36. I have less than half time left. I hurried, striding through the thick layers of dry leaves and broken branches, my steady breathing joining in on the cacophony of shuffling and snapping. I suddenly remembered the hikes I often had with Alina. She loved the outdoors. ¡ÈWait, I gotta¡Ä I gotta take a break. ¡É I said while panting, in the middle of an ascent on a steep hill. Alina turned around to face me, looking like she was doing nothing more than light jogging. ¡ÈTired already? Come onnn. ¡É She put her hands on her hips and shifted her weight on one leg. ¡ÈGuess I¡Ä I should have¡Ä should have gone jogging with you all those¡Ä mornings, huh. ¡É I chuckled breathlessly. ¡ÈTwice a week is all you need. ¡ÈTwice a week¡Ä that¡Çs twice as much as I planned on doing. ¡É I said. She approached me and grabbed my hand, playfully gesturing with her head towards the top of the hill. ¡ÈCome on, we¡Çre close to a bench now. We can take a break there and¡Ä¡É She leaned in and whispered ¡È¡Ämaybe kiss a little? ¡É Climbing the hill suddenly sounded a lot more attractive and in a matter of minutes, we were on an elevation, with our backpacks off, sitting close to each other on a bench. ¡ÈHey, I just wanted to say I really appreciate you doing these things with me. ¡É She said, as she put her hand on my thigh. ¡ÈWhat are you talking about, babe? I¡Çm enjoying this. ¡É And it was the truth. Anything even remotely unappealing was a lot more enjoyable with Alina, whether it be watching movies at home, visiting family members (which I hated), hiking or working out. ¡ÈWell, you¡Çll have to train harder if you don¡Çt want me to leave you behind for a bear to eat. ¡É She leaned in closer. ¡ÈHey, if I can survive living with you, I can survive a bear. ¡É I said, to which she gasped, faking shock. I brushed the hair from her face and kissed her. ¡ÈWait-¡È She barely managed to utter mid-kiss and looked away. She put her hand over her mouth and started coughing. It was a dry, painful-to-listen cough, which made my lungs hurt just hearing it. ¡ÈYou¡Çve been having that cough for a while now. We really should schedule an appointment for it, seriously. ¡É She mildly coughed a few more times, after which she cleared her throat. ¡ÈAlright, fine. I¡Çll do it first thing Monday, I promise. ¡É She smiled reassuringly. 4:13. Not much time left and I really didn¡Çt want to spend five more minutes going back and then going through the same process once more. I trudged through the leaves, the feeling of unease growing inside me, threatening to take control of my body. 4:33. Nothing but the dark and endless trees. Wait, there¡Çs something far ahead. The beam of my flashlight bounced off something at the end, rather than disappearing in the dark ahead. Reinvigorated, I quickened my pace and realized I was staring at a cliff wall. It was huge, its uneven and jagged surface taking up the entire view above and on both sides. As I moved my light a little to the left, I saw a small gap, slightly bigger than me, opening into a darkness that my flashlight couldn¡Çt illuminate. It made my breath quicken, made me feel as if I could go inside and never find my way back out. I slowly approached it, inspecting it from a safe distance. Even from here, my light couldn¡Çt penetrate the darkness at the threshold. I should have been able to see the adjacent wall on the inside, but there was nothing. It was as if my light was suddenly stopped at the entrance by an invisible black wall. My timer beeped loudly, startling me. I turned it off. I pulled out my paper again and read the next line three times, darting my eyes over the same sentence over and over. You have to be sure before you step inside, because once you do, there¡Çs no going back. I already knew that of course, but a nagging feeling wouldn¡Çt let me just rely on my memory. That¡Çs why I had it all written down. I couldn¡Çt allow myself to screw this up, I probably wouldn¡Çt get a second chance. I approached the

Plot twist: He's a loner and never goes out ever since. Girl gave him purpose to go out. Why us? because your hispanic and that gets us virtue signal points... Are you telling me there's actually something worth watching on BBC now. I¡Çve lived with disability my whole life. It¡Çs not been easy. Even something as simple as lifting a bag is made harder without kinesis. Most of you probably don¡Çt even notice but they don¡Çt put handles on them. Imagine that? Imagine going shopping and having to lift the bags up one by one using your hands. Imagine having to take the stairs everywhere because you can¡Çt use the chutes? Imagine having to buy toilet roll to clean yourself by hand and doing it every time, not just when you¡Çre tired or you have a headache. I know there¡Çs a big debate about how to define disability in our society. It¡Çs easy to look at someone like Dr Atterson and say that they have ability. I mean, the guy¡Çs been doing knifeless surgery for years now, effortlessly saving thousands and thousands of lives from all over the world. We know he¡Çs doing well. But what about the guy who can only move a pencil, or who has to strain for minutes just to shut a door? What about people with finesse but no heft? What about the people who can sew with their mind, but couldn¡Çt possibly be expected to lift their own weight up to the 56th floor of a skyscraper? And what about people who go the other way? We¡Çve all seen the stories of that kid who can move cruise ships but can¡Çt even stop a paper ball thrown at his head. Is he disabled? Is anyone who can lift a truck disabled? But no one¡Çs prepared for me. No one¡Çs prepared for the guy with absolutely zero ability, but I exist. Others too, though don¡Çt be surprised if most of them kill themselves before adulthood. You have no idea how hard it is to live in a world built for the able-minded while you can¡Çt so much as move a grain of rice. They had me at it for years, you know that? I was told it was my fault. There¡Çs no political correctness for my kind, let me tell you that. The assumption was always that I was lying or that I had some mental block. I mean, after all my brother is world famous for his skills! How could one twin be a total dud and the other a fuckin¡Ç real-life superhero? I can¡Çt even go in cities anymore. Without kinesis it¡Çs a death trap. I¡Çve been hit by fliers sixteen times in my life and every time the driver gets out screaming at me for not getting out of the way. The whole world is just pinging around with the power of their minds and when they get to me they don¡Çt even know how to process it. When I tell them I can¡Çt just magic myself out of the way at the speed of thought do you know what most of them do? They fuckin¡Ç laugh. My blood smeared up the windscreen, my bones broken, my teeth knocked out all over the tarmac, and almost all of them laugh when I tell them I don¡Çt have kinesis. They apologise quickly enough but it¡Çs always just a shrug of the shoulders, like I¡Çm a spider with all the legs pulled off ? sad, but ultimately insignificant. Maybe if I could hide it¡Ä that¡Çd be something, at least. The average person burns 34, 000 calories a day. You know what my calorie recommendation is? 2500. The doctor had to do it with a calculator. We¡Çve all seen the little test kit they use where they move those sliders to get all the metrics right so they can calculate exactly what your nutritional needs are. Well those levers don¡Çt go low enough to describe me. It¡Çs one thing if I can make my food by hand but between the GM foods and the junk food all pumped full of calories to keep us moving mountains with our minds, I¡Çm struggling to keep my weight below 250 pounds. I¡Çm sure you¡Çve seen the internet shock images of that woman who stopped using kinesis for a month and the weight she put on. Well¡Ä that¡Çs my life. I live in the arse-end of nowhere now. I have a few neighbours who score low enough to qualify for the same government sanctioned protection, but they all have some ability. At the very least they can keep themselves thin by moving pennies around. I had to have a fucking hamster wheel specially made. I¡Çd go running outside but my carer¡Çs afraid of what might happen if I fall since I can¡Çt lift myself back to safety. I guess I don¡Çt have any reason to disagree. This whole thing got so bad that when I turned 17 the government offered me anonymity, and it was just about the only time in my life someone reached out to help me. Apparently some scientists were planning to vivisect me but someone had a pang of conscience at the last minute and reported them to the University ethics board. That¡Çs about the extent of life¡Çs mercy to me. I don¡Çt even know why I¡Çm writing this. Between the identity wipe and the fact I¡Çm a living joke, no one¡Çs gonna believe me. But maybe I can at least plant a seed of doubt¡Ä Dr Atterson is my twin brother, fraternal of course. The current record holder for kinesis across all known metrics is my living flesh and blood and I¡Çm writing this to tell you that he is a sociopath. Those thousands of lives he saves only matter to him for his ego. The only thing stopping him from pulling the moon outta the freakin¡Ç sky is that there¡Çd be no one left to blow him afterwards. He has tortured me non-stop since the day I was born and it wasn¡Çt until I escaped that he left me alone. His initials are burned into my kidney because our mum put my name first on the shared birthday card. My left testicle was severed when I was 13 because I asked if we could share the bike he got for Christmas; it was six months before a doctor noticed and removed it and by then the infection had spread leaving me bed bound for months. My bones have been broken and reset more times than you can count, all done in the burgeoning early morning hours where he liked to practice his medical skills. My childhood was spent weeping on the bottom bunk with my vocal cords temporarily severed as he tinkered around with my insides. Since day one he has been an unstoppable bully. All those fucking surgeries he can do, well guess who he perfected them on? Guess who¡Çs ribs he cracked open, who¡Çs blood he kept pumping with his mind while my heart sat in an empty ice cream tub, who¡Çs teeth he pulled out and put back in over and over and over¡Ä And it¡Çs not just me. He tried fucking his chemistry teacher when he was thirteen and when she said no, do you know what he did? He put a bubble around her and compressed it with the force of a tectonic plate. I watched him turn that poor woman into a diamond and it¡Çs been his go-to trick ever since. When he dies they¡Çll find a suitcase full of diamonds and they¡Çll never really know where he got them from. But I¡Çll know. The odd patient here or there, a passing girl he found pretty, a man whose jawline made him feel inferior¡Ä they¡Çll all be in there, put aside like precious little trophies. That¡Çs the truth. Richard¡Çs a serial killer and he always has been, and if there was any justice in this world, even a drop, he wouldn¡Çt have been made an unstoppable force of nature. He would have been stillborn, but here we are and honestly I think you¡Çre all lucky he gets a kick out of lying to you. And now, somehow, the bastard¡Çs dug me out and he¡Çs coming at me anew. I always thought he¡Çd just kill me if he got the chance. He doesn¡Çt ¡Èget¡É that other living things feel pain so torture for torture¡Çs sake isn¡Çt his thing. We¡Çre just meat to him and we exist only in that we have utility. But this kind of psychological torture I¡Çve been going through lately? I never really thought it was like him. I guess he must be learning¡Ä God he must know me better than I thought. It started simple enough¡Ä I was smoking (and no, I don¡Çt get to strip the tar out when I¡Çm done, I just have to live with it clogging my arteries) when I felt something crawling up my leg. Out here in the country it¡Çs not uncommon to get mosquitos so I went to swat it away but I nearly had a coronary when I saw a big fat spider on my leg. I hate the freaking things. Jesus Christ they scare me, I¡Çm getting sweaty just thinking about its long spindly limbs spread across my skin. And I freaked out, right? I just freaked out and I smashed my hand down and then I pulled it back and I started doing that weird little hoppy dance from terror and revulsion that teenage girls do. I could barely process my own thoughts in the moment, I just knew I needed to scrape my hand before I took a proper look because this thing was a big fat-bodied hairy monster and the sight of its guts would have made me ill. So that¡Çs what I did, I scraped it off on a table ledge and shut my eyes and washed my hands with the hottest water I could get. But then when I went to clean the table there was only dust. And that¡Çs when I felt a weight on my sleeve and I looked and there it was again, the same spider. It met my eyes and its leg tightened with the creaking sound of tensile strength. I¡Çd never seen a spider like it and this time I didn¡Çt close my eyes, this time I slammed my arm so hard against the wall I¡Çve still got the bruise. And you know what happened? Poof. The spider went up like a glitter bomb. It took me a moment to realise it was just dust pouring down around me, like snow or ash. And yet there was the outline of the spider on the wall. I couldn¡Çt deny it had been right there. Course, at the time I didn¡Çt really think of it like that. I just put the strangeness down to fatigue. In fact it wasn¡Çt until a week later when I saw it (again) on the kitchen island that I took the time to trap it and get a proper look. At first it stayed so still I started to wonder if it was a kind of prank toy. The neighbours and I are spaced out pretty far on account of some protocol zeta or some shit, but even amongst the losers I¡Çm still the biggest outcast and I wouldn¡Çt put it past them banding together to play a mean trick on me. General Hanley, Carol's father, informs Marvin that many of the satellites have since fallen back to Earth. Marvin admits that he has lost contact with all of them and privately suspects alien involvement. The Marvins then witness the 11th falling from the sky shortly after launch. When a saucer lands at Skyhook the next day, a group of aliens in metallic suits exit, and the infantry guards open fire, resulting in the death of one alien, while others and the saucer are protected by a force field. Plot twist: Everyone realizes it was only bath salt. Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.
