My only real gripe is the third act definitely slows down in pace but it didn't negatively effect my enjoyment of the film. But by the time you learn the premise of the storyline or why certain characters are who they are? You don't really care. They haven't developed them or given you reason to care. That's not just an opinion, its calling out 101 storytelling failures. In that sense, its squashed together on the hopes that you'll miss out on what they've skipped. They try to throw in some gratuitous violence for extra punch but it misses. I personally was bummed because I like seeing Elijah Wood in these strange Film Noir roles, but he and Stephen McHattie may have been slightly misscast even if at first I was open to their chemistry. What starts innocently enough, takes twisted turn after twisted turn in a journey that had me enthralled after a steady opening. This film certainly left an impression. Elijah Wood perfectly cast and Michael Smiley, one of my favourite actor's (The Lobster) almost unrecognisable and with some of the most hilarious dialogue I've ever heard. This will create conversation for sure and I hope Timpson enjoys the success this film deserves. Just a shame it wasn't shot on these shores. Can't wait for feature Director credit number two, Mr T.

He tells Norval that what impresses him are “fighting stories” ? even as, ever so slowly, Norval is himself being drawn into one. There are female characters here ? an over-sharing coroner (Madeleine Sami) and a domineering prostitute (Ona Grauer) ? but for the most part this is a darkly comic tale of simple men. Indeed, Martin Donovan, star of Hal Hartley’s Simple Men, will show up, as will Michael Smiley, best known for appearing in another bad dad saga, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List. “Trust me, you’ve got no fucking idea what’s happening here, ” Norval is informed ? and the viewer will no doubt feel the same. Norval is on a quest for his father as a way of reclaiming his own identity, but is about to find out more than he ever bargained for about his legacy. For once Norval has answered his father’s call and reentered his life, the son is headed down a twisting, transformative path, and there can be no turning back. The two text quotes with which the film opens ? Shakespeare’s “The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children” and Beyoncé’s “There is no one else like my daddy” ? lay out the film’s principal themes: the sometimes baleful bequest, and the singularity, of the father.
