My wife Sasha and I have owned a small ranch since last Spring, so we¡Çve now experienced all four seasons here. What follows is the story about why this place is¡Ä special. Sasha and I moved to rural Idaho about a year ago when I got what is essentially my dream job working for the county here. We found a shitty little rental in the town where the county seat is ? a bustling metropolis of just about 3, 500 people (the entire county has around 13, 000 year-round residents). At first, we really weren¡Çt sure how long we¡Çd stay. It¡Çs definitely the smallest community we¡Çd ever lived in, and certainly a bit more ¡Èblue collar¡É and conservative than what we¡Çre used to. But, over time, we really fell in love with the place. We both love to hike, camp, and ski, and I¡Çm an avid hunter and angler, so being surrounded by beautiful mountains, canyons, forests, and trout-filled rivers to explore certainly helped us get comfy here. Sasha also had a great job that allowed her to work remotely, minus a day-trip to her firm in Jackson a couple times a month, which actually provided us with a nice reprieve from the isolation of a small mountain town. We don¡Çt have kids (just our dog, Dash), we¡Çre both in our early-mid 30s, we both had solid incomes for the first time, so we started thinking about buying property. The area was also developing rather quickly among the wealthy ¡Èhobby ranch¡É demographic as the billionaires push the millionaires out of Jackson Hole, and I qualified for a pretty amazing finance plan through the VA. That sweet mortgage, along with getting college paid for, are the only pleasant pieces of baggage I took home from six years in the Marine Corps. So we figured screw it, let¡Çs look for some property to buy. Our realtor called us the morning our property got listed this last Spring. She knew we wanted to find a spot with 4-5 acres, and was ecstatic about the price and said it was important we tour it right away and get an offer in. We met at her office that afternoon, and on the drive out to the place she explained how it was a 40-acre ranch owned by a family trust based back east somewhere, and that no one had lived on the land in over a decade. I guess the old matriarch of the family died last year, so the trust had the house remodeled prior to selling it and all the other the assets of the trust to split amongst her kids and adult grandkids. Long story short, the sellers were motivated and it would go fast. I¡Çll never forget driving up the long driveway that leads from the county road to the house and seeing the property for the first time. It was breathtaking. It still is, every time I make that turn. The house sits on a little hill, surrounded by meadow and aspen trees. Spring was in full-torque, everything was treefrog green, wildflowers and birds everywhere, the land felt like it was just humming with vibrance. The house is much smaller than what we were looking for, only about 900 sq/ft ? smaller than apartments we¡Çd lived in after college. However, it did have a big ass porch, a landscaped fenced-in yard around the house with some big ol¡Çcottonwood trees, a separate garage in decent shape, couple storage sheds, and a very old but functional hay barn with a few horse stalls. What stood out more than anything else is the fact that anywhere you looked was unbelievably beautiful. The landscape, without a doubt, is why we fell in love with it immediately. Outside the fenced-in yard there are about 25 acres of meadow with a pond and creek running in and out of it, and around 15 acres of pine forest that sit above the house, and our neighbor immediately to the east is a National Forest literally three times the size of Rhode Island. We both loved it, but Sasha was absolutely beside herself with excitement and adorably giddy. I don¡Çt have much family, Sasha¡Çs my entire world. I got out of the Marines and moved straight into freshman dorms at a massive state university as a maladjusted 24 year-old fresh off a combat deployment. Would not advise, marines. I repeat, would not advise. It was a fucking nightmare of emotional isolation and volcanic social anxiety. I quickly fell into a violent, whisky and blow fueled spiral of self-destruction, the kind that can only be stymied by falling in love. Meeting her brought me back, and I have no doubt, Sasha¡Çs happiness is quite literally the only reason I¡Çm still alive, and I¡Çve thought about that every day for the last decade. So, seeing her react to the property with that much excitement and happiness was all I needed. The listing price was a bit above what we wanted to spend, but we kinda just decided to go for it. With the VA loan plan, and having convinced ourselves it was a sound investment, we were pretty much set. Besides, it was still cheaper than what our friends were spending on houses in our expensive hometowns and the cities we¡Çd lived in since, right? So, we said fuck it, let¡Çs just do this, and we made an offer. Got an email from our realtor by 6:30am the next morning saying they¡Çd accepted our lowball offer without any counter. We were officially under contract. A few weeks later we got the inspection and title report - no red flags - so we closed the next Friday, moved in that same night. Ate pasta off our camping stove, sitting on camping chairs on the porch, and slept on a blow-up mattress in the living room. Sasha and I were electric with excitement, and made one fantastic and entirely unrealistic plan after another for the property. Pretty sure that first day we committed to constructing ski jumps, a 10-challenge archery course, a ¡Ètiny home village¡É for guests, and several wine drinking patios along the creek. The next 15 days of moving and settling in and planting our gardens screamed by. Dash, our hunting dog, was in absolute heaven. He¡Çd never come inside if he didn¡Çt have to, and now he had a full acre of fenced in yard, with a kingdom beyond. I¡Çll never forget the look of wonder, excitement, and just plain old peace Sasha wore every minute of those first few weeks here. At the beginning of our third week in the place, we realized we were fast approaching the ¡Èrudeness threshold¡É of not going to introduce ourselves to the neighbors. There were other houses in the area, but we only had one ¡Èneighbor¡É on our road, a 300-acre ranch to the north, owned by a couple we¡Çll call Dan and Lucy, who our realtor said were real nice. We made a couple pies, hopped in the truck and went to introduce ourselves. Their driveway ran about a quarter mile from their gate, through their pastures pocked with clusters of ponderosa and fat cows, and ended at their house. It was a nice place. Looked lived-in. Stellar view of the mountains. Good vibes. Gardens were well taken care of. The house was nestled between a couple massive barns, a tractor garage, and a big workshop. As we approached the house, I saw an older lookin fella in the driveway turn to face us, then raise a hand in greeting and slowly walk over. ¡ÈY¡Çall must be my new neighbors! ¡É Dan had a warm smile. "Yessir, I'm Harry, and this is Sasha. " Dan looked to be in his early-70¡Çs, but still quite spry. He had a calculation and strength to his movements suggesting he had as many good years left as someone in their 50¡Çs. His hands were like buffalo leather, and his features looked carved outta wood. An older woman came out one of the barns right then as well. She looked around the same age, and just as strong. She looked wise, like there wasn't much left "behind door number 3" that could surprise her. She introduced herself as Lucy. We introduced ourselves and exchanged the normal pleasantries. They told us how they¡Çd owned their ranch since the early 1980s, how their three kids were all living in Boise with families of their own. They also told us how the family that built our place only visited once or twice a year mostly just to hunt, and how that family also owned a mansion in Jackson and other ranches in Montana, so they were excited to have full-time neighbors. They were very grateful for the pie, and we expressed a sincere ¡Èplease call or stop by if you need anything at all, ¡É which they offered right back. Right as it felt like an appropriate ¡Ètill next time¡É handshake moment, Dan pointed up at me with a little smirk and said, ¡Èinfantry? ¡É ? ¡Èis it that obvious? ¡É I asked in response, looking down at myself. He slapped his knee and proclaimed ¡ÈI can spot it a mile away! Army or Marines? ¡É ¡ÈI was in the Marine Corps sir, 0311. ¡É Dan responded with ¡ÈA grunt! But wait, did you say ¡Æwas¡Ç? I thought the only way out of the Corps was dead in a pine box? ¡É If I had a nickel for every time I¡Çve heard that one. ¡ÈYah, I guess once a marine, always a marine, so it¡Çs said. But they told me you fine taxpayers would float the bill for my college tuition, so I jumped ship and never looked back. ¡É Old folks always laugh at that line, Dan and Lucy included. ¡ÈHa! Very good. I was 101st, did a stint in ¡ÆNam in 70-71. ¡É ¡ÈI¡Çve heard that was one hell of a time and one hell of a place to find yourself as a paratrooper, sir. ¡É ¡ÈThat it was, son. That it was¡Ä You make it over to Afghanistan or Iraq? ¡É ¡ÈI made a couple cameos in Afghanistan. ¡É Dan responded with a grin, but it seemed forced, almost apologetic: ¡ÈI¡Çve heard that was one hell of a place to find yourself as a marine¡Ä¡É ¡ÈIt was certainly a colorful experience, sir. ¡É ¡ÈI have no doubt. ¡É Dan¡Çs smile was replaced with an inquisitive look, suggesting a change in subject was coming: ¡ÈHey, you know for the last ten years the family who owned your land paid Luce & I and some of our seasonal ranch staff to take care of the place. Mostly just keeping the trees and shrubs in order, grazing down the grass before fire season, checking on the well and septic now and again, and lord knows I¡Çve spent lots of time there over the last decades riding and hunting. " I'm working with only the info/interviews we all have, no insider info, and we know we can't inherently trust everything that comes out of this franchise, so I certainly offer the disclaimer that this theory could be entirely wrong. But hey, it's fun to try and connect the dots. Forgive the length; I like to be thorough, ha. Big shout-out to u/kikisch for the awesome timeline that helped piece this together! TL;DR Version: I think Peter intentionally spread/encouraged misinformation to ensure that his season "couldn't be spoiled. " We know that Peter has been dreaming of being on The Bachelor for years. He's probably the biggest fan boy that has ever snagged the leading role. Naturally, this means Peter was likely to approach the role differently that other leads, even those who had become contestants because they ultimately desired to be the Bachelor/ette. Kind of like the old sterotype that little girls plan their weddings from a young age, I imagine Peter was more likely to envision his time as the Bachelor since he's admitted to being a big fan of the show as a teenager and even trying to sneak into the mansion. This guy was given the chance to fulfill one of his lifelong dreams by being the lead. Common sense would say he was not going to "waste" that opportunity, and he was more likely than other leads to intentionally devise ways to become a memorable Bachelor. Since an engagement/successful relationship can't be absolutely guaranteed from this show, Peter would need to brainstorm another way to secure his notoriety in the franchise. What better way to be memorable (in this era of spoilers) than to intentionally make sure your own season can't be spoiled? And the only way to make sure your season can't be spoiled is to control the information as much as possible--both the accurate and the inaccurate. Back before the season premiere, Peter started spreading this narrative about the ending being unspoilable. In this interview (dated Jan 3), Peter said, "I¡Çm very confident that no one is going to be able to spoil it [... ] There¡Çs a reason I believe that, and obviously can¡Çt say it otherwise it gives it away. I¡Çm very confident that Reality Steve and all of these people, they¡Çre not going to find out what happens ? there¡Çs no way they¡Çre going to find out. " A few days after Peter gave the above interview, ET ran this article with comments from Executive Producer Martin Hilton and Chris Harrison. This is what Martin Hilton had to say: "I'm happy he's confident [... ] In all my years of doing it, it's always somehow been spoiled. For me, it's actually sometimes free publicity, honestly. Because I think people watch anyway, and the same way you know how a Disney movie is going to end when you start watching it, people still watch it, because you want to see the journey. So, that's what we really focus on. And if we were to get upset about spoilers, then I'd be upset all day long. " Several months ago, I made a post "defending" Peter since I believed he was at the mercy of TPTB and their desire to have an unspoiled season. But reading this interview in retrospect, I don't get the sense that the showrunners really cared (at the beginning of the season, at least) if this season was spoiled or not. It seems Peter was the one who cared and initiated this narrative. Chris Harrison had this to say in the ET article: "First of all, [Peter's] new at this, so you can't make a claim like that. But I know what he's actually talking about, which is, it's a wild finish. It is a season that got turned on its head and is an emotional, dramatic finish. " We now know that at the point that these interviews were given in early January, Peter was engaged to Hannah Ann, it had been filmed in Australia, and that was pretty much it. There wasn't anything--at least that we know about--that was actively happening behind the scenes at that point. Plus, it's interesting to note how Chris Harrison spoke about the season in this interview (January 9): it's all in past tense and it references a "dramatic finish. " Chris seemed to indicate that the season had, indeed, ended by that point. So if the producers weren't the ones who came up with the idea that the season could be unspoiled (and frankly didn't even seem to care if it was), why would Peter begin this narrative? Because he was going to make sure it was unspoiled by doing the dirty work himself. I know Rob Mills is not always a reliable source, but here is what he very recently said in the Hollywood Reporter regarding Peter keeping things close to the vest: "It was important to [Peter] that the audience sort of go on the journey with him. He definitely did not want it to be spoiled and I think that probably was his inner circle ? it¡Çs actually fairly easy [to keep it quiet] if you just keep it to people that are going to keep their mouth shut. " So according to Mills, as long as the lead is selective about who they tell about the ending, it isn't impossible to keep it quiet. But how could Peter know who to trust? Enter The Weber Family, the group who made a name for themselves on Hannah's season as seemingly doting, lovely, welcoming people and great TV. The Webers seemed over the moon to be a part of Peter's Bachelor experience, from showing up at Hannah's ATFR to doing mansion tours for ET to renewing their vows on the show. They hung out with producers and claimed that they had become like family. Up until this past week, these people seemingly lapped up the chance to be a part of The Bachelor franchise more than any other lead's family. It isn't hard to believe they would do anything to make sure that Peter's season was one for the history books. And we know they were fully aware of the engagement, since we saw footage of Barb screeching when Peter told them. Therefore they would have to be committed to his unspoiled ending as well. Thus, it seems super plausible to me that Peter urged his family to keep completely quiet about the outcome AND told them he had plans to make sure the ending didn't escape. And I absolutely believe they would have been willing to support him in this endeavor because they wanted him to have a notable season. I also think there is a very good chance he confided in a few of his friends and asked for their help in spreading the wrong info, and/or even gave some of them completely incorrect information (or at least allowed them to believe incorrect things without correcting them). A few things seem especially notable to me as possible proof that Peter was "unspoiling his own season, " with the help (intentional or unintentional) of his friends/family: On January 8th, the rumor about Peter dating someone who wasn't on the show started circulating thanks to this discussion forum, and it was seemingly attributed to Delta pilots sharing the scuttlebutt. The person who commented didn't indicate who they were or how they had heard this information so it's not possible to verify how it came to be. However, the perfect person to start spreading rumors among Delta pilots would be... a Delta pilot. (Note: I don't believe the poster was actually Pete, but I believe Pete had a hand in starting that rumor, or ushering it along) On January 13th, Peter's friend posted the nasty IG story about Hannah Ann being most likely to have STDs. This happened when by all accounts, Peter and HA were still "happily" engaged. The public's reaction was that HA couldn't possibly be F1 because Peter wouldn't let his friend talk about her like that.... or would he, if it meant misdirecting the audience and adding to his "unspoiled season? " On February 1, Madison was a guest at Peter's friend's baby shower. This was only days after and and HA ended their engagement. Obviously Madison would have been invited prior to that time, while Peter and HA were still engaged. This part is fuzzy because we still don't quite know if Peter and Madi were communicating during his engagement or if they legit didn't talk until after CH "retrieved her" from Auburn. theory could explain why Madison ended up at Courtney's baby shower. It's entirely possible that Peter led Courtney to believe that Madison was his F1 and thus Courtney reached out to include Madison in the festivities. It seems that Courtney/Madison's goal at that time was to keep this fairly hush-hush, since RS said he received word of Madi's appearance but no picture so he didn't fully trust the rumor. Courtney could have believed she was helping Madison feel included in Peter's world but also protecting her as F1 by not making her appearance known to the public at the time. (I know this particular instance makes Peter sound especially nefarious--like he was willing to straight-up lie to his own BFF just for his show--but it's also possible that Courtney simply asked, " Pete, should I invite Madison? wink wink? " and Peter just shrugged or smirked or didn't give an answer and she took that to mean yes. ) I know some people think Madison and Courtney simply became super close friends after meeting at the vow renewal, but it seems like a pretty.... "extremely friendly" measure to invite someone to your baby shower who you've met once and probably exclusively built a friendship with using social media. The fact that RS didn't know about the engagement in Australia until the 11th hour is super weird to me. Obviously there was a film crew there and maybe some of those people are his sources, but it's also very possible that Peter had led people to believe that he didn't get engaged
