Adapting H.P Lovecraft stories both long and short has never proven too be an easy task for filmmakers, with many unable to conjure up the same mystic, horror and intrigue that the famed horror author managed to do with the written word.

Proving once more that this is indeed the case is director Richard Stanley, who returns to narrative film-making for this first time in over 20 years after his attempt to bring The Island of Dr. Moreau to the big screen saw him fired mid-project, in a colorful and bizarre exercise in turning Lovecraft's short story of the same name into a Nicolas Cage starring horror. Now I must admit, I must put my hand up and fully embrace the fact that I don't see how on earth Color Out of Space has been met with a rather positive critical response, as Stanley's boring, unlikable and cheapo effort see's the goodness of Lovecraft washed away in an extended run-time that loses sight of what could've made it great very early on. Built around a Cage performance as Llama loving father Nathan Gardner that never gets the crazy eyed wonder into full Cage-Mode, Space really does take its time to get going as the Gardner family find their secluded farm living life interrupted by a pink meteorite, strange cooking mishaps, Tommy Chong cameos and of all things Llama milking, as Stanley looks to cover up a low-budget with tension building and a rainbow tinted palette that fails to get the recipe for a good time into a solid package. There's brief snippets of a great film here, some visceral violence and some nasty looking creature practical effects will please genre hounds but all the creative aspects of the film mean little with a daft script, boring performances and a forgettable ending all holding things back. Stanley has spoken already of his desire to return to the world of Lovecraft once more but on the back of this effort you suspect he has his work cut out for him, as a film with this crazy of an idea and with the industries most unhinged leading man front and centre too still feel like a chore to sit through makes you wonder what type of luck he will have in future endeavors in an attempt to give us all a truly great Lovecraft feature. Final Say - Don't believe the hype, Color Out of Space may live up to its title in a visual sense but most elements of this student quality affair fail to do much good as wasted potential goes begging throughout. 1 hobby Llama out of 5.

In this bonkers yet weirdly beautiful science fiction-horror hybrid (directed, with retro panache, by the great Richard Stanley), the light is a throbbing lilac and blood is Schiaparelli pink. And if I tell you that Nicolas Cage’s eyeballs will turn into ultraviolet high-beams, then you’ll know immediately if you’re in or out. Lovers of aberrant, gooey B-movies will be all in. Cage plays Nathan, a gentleman farmer who can show you how to whip up a cassoulet or milk an alpaca. Nathan’s main preoccupations are lingering daddy issues and a stalled sex life resulting from the recent illness of his wife, Theresa (Joely Richardson). But just as that particular dry spell is breaking, a meteorite crashes into their front yard, its crater releasing poisonous, multihued energy that alters DNA in disgustingly inventive ways. And when Theresa’s body begins a seeming attempt to suck the youngest of their three children back into the womb, an increasingly unhinged Nathan becomes convinced that only family solidarity will save them. Based on a 1929 short story by H. P. Lovecraft, “Color Out of Space” has more going on than just the squishy satisfactions of its old-school creature effects ( reminiscent of Rob Bottin’s ingenious work on John Carpenter’s “The Thing”). Using shape-shifting as a messy metaphor for sickness and childhood trauma, Stanley and Cage leap so far over the psychological top that they never come back to earth. By the end, my own eyeballs hadn’t changed color, but they must have looked like pinwheels. Color Out of Space Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 51 minutes.

Идея насколько простая, настолько и гениальная, особенно если учитывать, что новелла была написана в конце 1920-х. Что, если инопланетные захватчики ? не зеленые человечки с понятной программой, а вообще не пойми что, не пойми зачем: неописуемый цвет в данном случае? И война миров, соответственно, выглядит не битвой с лазерами и гигантскими треножниками, а бэд-трипом на рейве. Стэнли, как быстро становится ясно, ? идеальный режиссер для такой психоделической фантастики, поскольку навсегда застрял где?то в эпохе ее расцвета. Фильм с его синтезаторами, безумной палитрой, тревожным лесом, нежным сатанизмом и диким боди-хоррором напоминает то Карпентера, то Кроненберга, то поточные би-муви-фабрики Роджера Кормана. А то вдруг и Спилберга: о ком еще думать, когда мальчик с собакой пересвистываются по ночам с инопланетным разумом на дне колодца? Иногда кажется, что режиссера Стэнли самого четверть века назад похитила летающая тарелка, а сейчас вернула невредимым, как в ?Близких контактах третьей степени?, и у него на персональном дворе ? начало 90-х, и нет еще никаких Вильневых с Ноланами, не говоря уж про ?Мстителей?. Невозможно, конечно, не вспомнить еще один недавний эксперимент с лесом, клавишами и кислотными цветами: ?Мэнди? с тем же Николасом Кейджем. Здесь Кейдж в основном играет на несколько тонов ниже, но тоже до поры до времени: метеорит по-разному влияет на окружающую действительность (время и пространство искривляются, флора и фауна начинают мутировать, как ? последняя аналогия! ? в ?Аннигиляции?), и в тихом пенсионере Кейдже он иногда пробуждает того Кейджа, которого мы любим. То, что происходит с артистом в этом фильме, ? странно, не очень последовательно и довольно, чего уж там, смешно (и, кажется, не всегда по режиссерской воле), но, по крайней мере, не скучно. Впрочем, какая уж там скука, ? не нужно быть убежденным лавкрафтианцем (хотя знакомые с Аркемом и ?Некрономиконом? порадуются особенно), чтобы задышать с этим причудливым оглушительным фильмом в унисон.
