What you need to know about The Hunt is…that Animal Farm is a great book. George Orwell, hm? He was really onto something when he wrote about animals overthrowing humans to run their own utopian society, only to be thwarted by an uprising within their ranks. The Hunt ?the gory satirical thriller that caused months of headaches for Blumhouse and Universal?is also concerned with uprisings within uprisings. Now that the film is finally out in theaters?despite coronavirus effectively destroying the moviegoing experience ?we can finally talk freely about the film that pissed off Donald Trump and sparked a debate about whether a dangerous new precedent of cancelations was being set in Hollywood. First, the lead-up. The Hunt, directed by Craig Zobel and cowritten by Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse, stars Betty Gilpin as Crystal, a gruff ex-military loner. “She is a living fuckery poem of who America is right now, ” Gilpin wrote of the character in an essay for Vanity Fair. Crystal is kidnapped and brought to a giant field with a bunch of MAGA-supporting conservatives. Then a bunch of rich, liberal elites, led by a corporate bully named Athena ( Hilary Swank, wearing one of the hardest-working lob wigs in showbiz), start hunting them down. (The squeamish should note that the film is staggeringly violent; blood, guts and gore galore. ) The premise, it seems, is simple enough: The elites are triggered and want to do something in the wake of the Trump election. But the longer Crystal survives, the more she realizes that’s not the full story. (Let us also take this moment to praise Gilpin’s utterly weird and thrilling performance; her Crystal like a stoic, slightly haunted cowboy. ) So, here’s what actually happened: Some kooky conservatives spread a conspiracy theory across the internet, accusing rich elites of killing Trump voters in a laboriously planned hunt? The Most Dangerous Game ?style. Athena and her friends have a good laugh about the conspiracy theory in a group chat, making silly jokes about how they can’t wait to get to “the manor. ” Then the text thread leaks?and the conspiracy theorists latch onto it, emailing and tweeting it out far and wide. (This movie is anti-group chat! ) As a result, Athena loses her job, as do her friends?including a kimono-wearing jerk played by Glenn Howerton, patron saint of onscreen jerks. Furious, they decide to go ahead and…make the Hunt a real thing, specifically targeting people who sent emails around about their fake, but now real Hunt. Still with me? Okay, good. Athena decides that Crystal is going to be her main kill, dubbing her “Snowball, ” after the pig in Animal Farm whose revolutionary ideas make him a target of the brutish Napoleon. (There is also a random pig wearing clothes running around in the movie because, again, Animal Farm. ) Crystal gradually becomes the last conservative left standing and fights her way up to the manor, where Athena is the last elite left. After Athena delivers a ridiculous villain’s speech, all while making a grilled cheese and touting the merits of Gruyère, Crystal reveals that Athena made a mistake?she’s the wrong Crystal, and had never heard of the conspiracy theory before being abducted and taken to the Hunt. In the end, though, that doesn’t really matter. Crystal and Athena have a giant fight scene that’s genuinely fun and ridiculous, thanks to Gilpin’s and Swank’s action skills (special shout-out to their stunt doubles Sarah Irwin and Caitlin Dechelle too). While there are plenty of loopholes we could point out in this film, it does feel relevant to note that Crystal is ex-military and knows how to kill people at close range with her bare hands. Athena, meanwhile, has been training for just under a year, specifically for the Hunt. Is it believable that their fight is in any way close? Of course not! But it helps that Athena is played by Swank, an actor whose muscles are harder than Carrara marble. After they both get in an equal amount of blows, they lie on the floor, both dying, as Crystal delivers a monologue about how she thinks Athena is actually more like Snowball than she is. Shocked, Athena turns to her. “You read Animal Farm? ” she asks. She can’t believe it! Then, she dies. But somehow, powered by the strength of classic seventh-grade-reading-level literature, Crystal gets up, patches up her bloody wounds, puts on heels and a gown (which, you know, any woman is simply dying to put on after wrecking her body in a series of adrenaline-fueled death matches), and hops on Athena’s private jet. She pops open the Champagne, then makes the skittish flight attendant sit down with her and share some caviar. The end! Ultimately, the movie is very careful to make Crystal apolitical. She’s a white Southerner who served in the military, so she could be coded as conservative. But she also has trenchant theories about Animal Farm, which means she a conversation with single-minded elites? It’s unclear. What is clear is that Trump’s temper tantrum about this film, which was supposed to be released last September, needn’t have happened?because the conservatives are clearly the victims in this story, while all the liberals are deeply, deeply annoying and incredibly vicious. The message is, maybe, that we’re all the same, but some people have the means to be much worse in divisive times. From pig to man, and from man to pig, et cetera, et cetera.
