Norval's life has been, to put it lightly, difficult. Currently living home with his mother, the troubled young man is coming off alcohol-related struggles. So when he receives an unexpected letter from his estranged father requesting a visit, Norval catches a bus up to his dad's secluded and scenic waterfront home. Maybe reconnecting with his father will give Norval the emotional fulfillment he's been lacking. Before long, though, he notices something off about his dad, an uneasy feeling triggered by inappropriate comments and a possible over-dependence on booze. Norval quickly realizes that his hope of father/son bonding is doomed. Instead of a family reunion, he finds himself in waking nightmare. On the other hand how did Elijah got here is beyond me, I'm guessing it might have something to do with productions like Maniac and Cooties, also I've noticed he produced others such as Mandy, The colour of space, so all in all, perhaps it's a choice and not a downhill slip for him. Come to Daddy is clearly not my coup of tea, I do get the appeal it has, the dark humor managed to make me smile a few times, but jumping from one extremity to another didn't quite did it for me. I do like some consistency, sure, after a first slower half I did not mind one bit seeing some action but it came in a rather disturbing hilarious way, where I didn't quite know how to take it all in. You see, I am a big fan of productions such as The Visit, where you also see a nice blend of comedy with some disturbing elements, but that one stayed away from torture porn or gore, and it managed to have quite a nice impact on me. Weigh them against Elijah Wood s troubles in debuting director Ant Timpson s moderately funny and strangely dated gross-out comedy-thriller “ Come To Daddy, ” and you might just award your own old man a “Parent of the Year” prize. Too bad that Woods character Norval shows up at the remote doorstep of Brian (Stephen McHattie) ? the guy who had abandoned him and his mother three decades ago ? utterly clueless about the senselessness that awaits him and his long-estranged father. The audience is slightly luckier, since Timpson tips off the viewers about the forthcoming crazy ride by kicking his film off with two wildly unrelated quotes about dads: one by William Shakespeare and the other by Beyoncé. If only Timpson (whose previous credits as a producer include the notoriously weird “The Greasy Strangler”) had earnestly delivered on that tease with some fresh grip. Instead, the blend of tired jokes and body horror here seems entombed in amber, as every lacerated scalp, loudly broken limb, and use of the C-word makes it feel that much less original. If you find yourself amid a dedicated “bring it on” audience up for anything, there is surely some retro fun to be had with this brand of cartoonish and completely unrealistic chamber violence. But while “Come To Daddy” dials up its gruesomeness to maximum noise, even the collectively therapeutic “ewws” and stress-release claps wear thin, as the onscreen gore starts feeling like a bore. This is both a bummer and a shock, as “Come To Daddy”, written by “The Greasy Strangler” co-writer Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Timpson) sets the madness in motion stylishly with enough intrigue and suspense in its first act. We meet the 30-something Norval as he hysterically drags a suitcase across isolated coastal landscapes in some distant Oregon town, following painstaking instructions on a map, hand-drawn by his father who had apparently mailed him an out-of-the-blue invitation for a visit. Clearly clothes-conscious with a hat that indicates arrogance and sporting a goofy “medieval-chic” haircut (minus the “chic” part) Norval gets established as an amusing, out-of-place image at once. Soon enough, the Beverly Hills-dwelling, snobby DJ reaches daddys idyllic cabin, which looks like a circular UFO from outer space. Except, Brian seems peculiarly startled at the sight of his son. Still, the duo falls into a routine in no time. Often dangerously drunk, Brian intimidates Norval with threatening language and mannerisms, destroys Norvals precious Lorde-designed phone and refuses to reveal the reason for his surprise letter. A recovering alcoholic, Norval indulges in egotism in return, bragging about his cutting-edge gigs. “I am someone you cant pigeonhole. Do I produce blazing beats? Yes! ” he boasts during a conversation, crowing about his alleged connection to big names like Elton John. The funniest segment of the film is this pissing contest between the pair, during which cinematographer Dan Katz stays close to the subtly aggressive mimics of the two committed and equally superb performers to hilarious effect. Without spoiling the central twist, suffice it to say that Norvals quiet escape to the country costs him a lot more than he had bargained for. As the story progresses with mild surprises, a number of new characters shift its shape from a darkly funny thriller to full-on slasher. In that, “Come to Daddy” becomes something in the vein of a cheesy 80s horror flick by way of Martin McDonagh or an early Quentin Tarantino film, with plenty of blood and guts spilled. While this sounds like a winningly escapist combination, the script falls short of the wit and smarts needed to do the premise justice. Still, the delightfully scene-stealing Kiwi comedian Madeleine Sami adds a surprising amount of depth to an otherwise petty and overwhelmingly masculine package with a memorable scene ? it feels like an unfortunate cheat when she doesnt return. Moreover, a dauntingly jawed Michael Smiley and a placid Martin Donovan deliver two knowingly over-the-top performances as once-friendly foes. But no matter its oddball turns, Kiwi director Ant Timpsons wild, unpredictable debut manages to deliver a gory hilarious father-son reunion saga with a surprising degree of confidence in the silly-strange nature of the material ? a sentimental story about death and rediscovery that explodes into violent mayhem even as it maintains an earnest connection to the conundrum at hand. Its an absurd gross-out romp that turns into a tearjerker. Timpson, whose producing credits include the grotesque midnight whatsit “The Greasy Strangler, ” certainly has a handle on his lurid material, but star Elijah Wood helps give it heart. As a baffled pariah named Norval, the actor delivers one of his most endearing characters in recent memory: a wide-eyed, mustachioed hipster who obscures his insecurities with high fashion and fancy lies. When Norval shows up at his estranged fathers remote seaside mansion as the movie begins, he wanders through a vast, empty green landscape as the wind sweeps through, and his top hat careens off-screen. He freezes into a silhouette of confusion, and its the first indication of strange circumstances beyond his control. Timpsons ominous visual flair sets the stage for an elegant thriller, and the first act of “Come to Daddy” unfolds as a dark comic thriller. When Norval arrives at the mansion, he introduces himself to the stern man with cruel eyes (Stephen McHattie) who opens the door as his long-lost son. The older man looks puzzled, curious, and not exactly thrilled by Norvals arrival, even though Norval says he received a letter from his old man asking him to visit. Not having seen his dad since his toddler years, Norval ? whose mother raised him under posh circumstances in Beverly Hills ? seems to eager to develop an adult relationship. But McHatties bawdy, inebriated character quickly makes it clear that a tender reunion is not in the cards: As the pair settle into the living room, he intimidates Norval by poking holes in his claims of being a successful deejay back home, and later threatens violence against the poor guy in a drunken rage. Norval, whose troubled family history has led to his own history of substance abuse, can barely process this reality check before circumstances take an even more dire turn, and hes suddenly left alone in the sprawling abode to contemplate his emotional turmoil against the dramatic ocean backdrop. But…not for long. It would ruin the ride to reveal too much about the complications that suddenly put Norval in danger and lead to new revelations about his past, but Timpson manages to pad out the running time with a menacing slow-build. After he hears strange sounds at night, Norval begins to suspect hes being haunted by his personal demons, but the reality is at once more shocking and ludicrous. As it shifts gears into a fast-paced tale of dumb criminals and ruthless scheming, “Come to Daddy” loses some of the awe-inspiring intrigue of its first half. But when Norval suddenly faces a range of cartoonish threats, from knives to fecal-encrusted pens, the movie settles into a different kind of escapism. With shades of early Peter Jackson and “Evil Dead II, ” the mayhem builds to a relentless pileup of chaotic circumstances, most of which unfold within the claustrophobic confines of a single interior set. Its there that two-bit criminals played by Michael Smiley and the great Martin Donovan become central to Norvals survival, as he contends with the risking stakes of a situation he never signed up for. But in a strange way, the gruesome events become an ideal metaphor for the often messy process of confronting family bonds that burst apart long ago. Once the full scope of that drama has been revealed, “Come to Daddy” struggles to maintain its zany energy through the final act, and a concluding hotel room showdown unfolds like a quirky, half-hearted sketch comedy in the shadow of the more alluring weirdness leading up to it. Even so, its punctuated by a violent act so cartoonish and bizarre it brings the story back to its strengths. Meanwhile, Woods frozen look of astonishment at every new twist epitomizes the outrageous, winding pathway of the movies plot. As Norval stumbles into a climactic encounter, “Come to Daddy” arrives at the attempted reconciliation the character has pursued from the start, while it doesnt happen the way hed envisioned it, the movie finds its way to a bizarre form of closure that illustrate Timpsons confidence in this strange genre brew. By the end, it all suddenly clicks: The finale conjures a series of poignant images to convey the idea that cruel people still have the potential for empathy, and family bonds can transcend even the bloodiest of circumstances.
