There were 3 big anime films this year and I got the chance to see them all. Weathering With You This film undoubtably lives in the shadow of the colossal success of Your Name. And while comparisons between the two are inevitable given their similarities and shared creative team, it’s clear that Shinkai wanted to make a film with different focuses and themes. Weathering With You has a larger core cast and tackles more grounded real-world issues. While Your Name has a more focused narrative and got me more emotionally invested, Weathering With You is more challenging and has left me pondering the film’s themes even after seeing it twice. The quick pace of the film throws a lot at you, but on the second viewing I picked up more foreshadowing and felt the pace flowed well for the most part. Visually the film is breathtaking. Without a doubt the best character animation of any Shinkai movie alongside the gorgeous animation of the rain and weather. RADWIMPS delivers another great score as well. There are not as many memorable music moments as Your Name, but one song during the climax will definitely stick with me for years to come. I’m curious to see what everyone else thinks of this ambitious film when it gets it’s full release. Children of the Sea The trailers got me excited to see the beautifully detailed animation of this movie and the full film does not disappoint. The characters move smoothly despite the dense designs and the background art is on a level very few anime can match. Joe Hisaishi’s score is very good, but more minimalist and atmospheric than fans of his Ghilbi scores are familiar with. That focus on atmospheric tone carries through the whole film which is more concerned with taking you through a philosophical journey of visuals and emotions rather than a logical plot. I didn’t get as invested in the characters as I was hoping too, but the trippy climax of the film is a true feast for the eyes and brings the core themes about the connections between all life together. It’s a slow burn that is definitely not for everyone, but it will reward those who are willing to be patient with it. Ride Your Wave The latest film from the great Masaaki Yuasa, Ride Your Wave had my whole theater laughing constantly. It has an interesting balance between comedy, romance, and tragedy. It’s hard not to get invested in the sweet relationship between the two leads, especially after a great montage early on. And the film does tackle it’s more serious topics well, coping with loss being a key theme. The animation is fun and bouncy like in his other films and the score is solid. Unfortunately, the circumstances leading up to the climax felt contrived and did not resolve the main character’s inner conflict in a satisfying way. Which is a shame since I really loved the film up to that point. It’s still a good film I would recommend to anyone, but the ending holds it back from true greatness.

Everything is ridiculously perfect, but one day Minato drowns while trying to save someone from the ocean.

Hinako, understandably takes it pretty bad, but to her surprise, whenever she starts singing their favorite song, Minato's spirit appears in the closest body of water - be it a stream, the ocean, or a bottle of mineral water. The whole story is really about Hinako, Minato's friends and family, and how they slowly but finally learn to "let go. Of course, it's magical-realism, so in the end we get to witness some crazy action as well, where we surf down a skyscraper with our protagonists. Unfortunately, this is not the most original story, the characters are a little two dimensional, and the filmmaking could've been a little braver. It's fine though, the film looks really nice, colorful with constantly glowing orange hues and cool blues. The action looks fantastic as well and the environments feel very "lived in" and detailed. Seeing it on a big screen really adds to the experience. It is also paced well, has some pretty funny moments, as well as a couple of quite moving ones. Recommended if you manage to catch it screening somewhere, but not an essential viewing. There. Really not much else to say about it, but seeing the only other user review for this title is from someone who clearly has no idea what he's talking about, I wanted to add my two cents.

Although I will say that the fire fighter scenes were pretty intense regardless if they were only training or had to attend buildings that were on fire due to fireworks. I understood this films backdrop involving the feeling of losing someone through drowning and honestly the ending was a near hard hitter for me. However I would have liked if the couples experience together was more in depth because as I said yet again, it was rather rushed. It didn't give much in depth either with the other guy who had a crush on her or if he was going for someone else. Since I'm not gonna say spoilers to telling you who's who, it's best to watch the film. Animation wise, it was pretty alright. Not amazeballs but it was easy on the eyes at least. As much as the film did offer a bit of emotion, it's not the ultimate worse or disappointment I've ever seen. However room for improvement is what it definitely definitely needs in terms of story pace development.
