The result was Warner Brothers toying with a Harley Quinn spin-off film for several years, but when they finally came out with one on February 7, 2020 (US release date), no one was paying attention. It’s interesting to play the game of what could have made Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) into a hit. Maybe if the name had been shorter - seriously this SEO-disaster of a name was definitely part of the problem. Such to the fact that a few days into its release, the studio directed theaters to display the name as “Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey. ” Making the Harley Quinn name front and center should’ve been the case from the start, but by the time they corrected it, the damage was already done. The super-group titled Birds Of Prey just never had the same name recognition. Really the movie should’ve been called “Harley Quinn and the Birds Of Prey, ” but it’s too late for that now. Maybe if the movie hadn’t been rated-R. Sure, there are other comic book films that have been successful with that rating. Logan was nominated for an Academy Award and Deadpool broke box office records, but those films were the exceptions to the rule. The truth is that this film needed to appeal to a wide range of audiences, and the R-rating severely limited it (even if it gave the film more freedom creatively). Maybe if the marketing had been better. Many have criticized the trailers for not grabbing people’s attention, although the second trailer was a significant improvement over the first. if it came out only a couple of years after Suicide Squad did - when hype for it was at its height - instead four years later, people would’ve flocked to the theaters. Whatever the case, the result was a poor opening - $33M domestic ($79M worldwide), down from $50-55M projections, that didn’t rebound - the total gross wound up being $84. 2M domestic and $199. 2M worldwide. Despite mixed-positive critical reception, the word of mouth never really took off, and the film remained in box office purgatory. But what’s this? A global pandemic sweeping the globe that forces people to stay in their homes and stream movies instead of going to see them in theaters? One that has already forced multiple movies to be released on VOD early, and some even while they’re still in theaters? It didn’t take long for people to start pointing out that Birds Of Prey is the perfect candidate. Even director Cathy Yan got in on it, and posted on Twitter that she wouldn’t mind seeing the film come to VOD early. Sure enough, by the very next day (March 17), it was announced that Birds Of Prey would in fact be coming to VOD early. On March 24, the film will be available to rent or buy online. Why this film will particularly benefit from being brought to VOD: It’s no secret that many movies that get passed over by the general public while in theaters often get a second life once they’re available digitally. A great recent example is A Simple Favor (2018), which was widely ignored by audiences while in theaters, but received a lot of positive social media recognition once it was put on Hulu. The Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick starring film is also a good example of a movie that was perhaps marketed incorrectly - it was spun as a thriller, but is actually a pretty goofy dark comedy. (This trailer is a good example of how the movie was made out to be much scarier than it actually is. ) People may not have gotten off their asses to get to the theater to see this film, but once they were able to just click on it, they found it to be extraordinarily fun, and went and told all their friends and followers about it. Birds Of Prey isn’t being put on a streaming service, but it does seem to fit into the category of films that people don’t bother to go see, but are perfectly happy to rent from their couches. (I, personally, did go see it in theaters and can say that it was fantastic and so worth it, but I digress. ) There is a market for a gonzo-bananas, Harley Quinn-led, R-rated film, and I think we’re going to see that starting March 24. (This isn’t a Cats situation where people didn’t want to see it in theaters, and now that it’s out on still don’t want to see it. ) The film’s a blast, and perfect for people who are self isolating in their homes and just want to watch something ridiculously fun right now. It’s incredibly soon for the film to be coming out on VOD considering it was just in theaters, but coronavirus or not, it’s also the best possible move for the film. His right hand goon is known as Zsasz (Chris Messina). He doesn’t get a cute nickname. The crux of the story involves a large diamond expected to be delivered to Sionis. He sends Zsasz to pick it up along with Harley but Zsasz gets his pocket picked by a young girl named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) who lives in the same building as Dinah Lance aka Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). Dinah is a singer at Sionis’s nightclub and later his driver. She, like most of the ladies, is pretty adept at various forms of martial arts. Rosie Perez plays a police detective named Renee Montoya who is suspended for crossing her boss. Finally, Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Helena Bertinelli aka The Huntress. Her crime family was slaughtered by an opponent but was saved by one of the men and whisked off to Italy to be raised as a killer by his family. Her special skill is using a cross-bow. Alas she is one of the more interesting but less utilized characters. Harley gets most of the screen time of course and Robbie makes the most of it. Her action sequences are well done if improbable. In the most consequential scene, Harley, Renee, The Huntress, Black Canary gather in an amusement park where they must join forces to not only save Cassandra who still has the diamond but their own lives. They with few weapons will have to take out Sionis and about 100 heavily armed men with bulging biceps. Stretching reality a bit don’t you think, even for a comic book based movie? My biggest issue with the film has a lot to do with the audience rating and the lack of good one liners. The film is rated “R” because of a few language issues and some bone cracking legs and one scene (nothing graphic) where Zsasz relieves another crime lord of his face. Clearly the film is going to miss one portion of its target audience. So if you are OK with an “R” why not amp up the raunchy comedic elements ala “Deadpool”? Harley would certainly be up for the task given some better writing. There’s little sexual references other than Renee’s funny t-shirt and a few requisite kicks to a man’s nether regions. Robbie and McGregor’s breezy performances keep us entertained but this could have been much better.

Hezký pokus, ale vzhledem k tomu, jaký ten film je (k tomu se dostanu níže), ani tato změna nepomůže. Dále to, co je v onom názvu není zrovna nejšťastnější volba: kdo z těch, kteří nečtou pravidelně komiksy a nezajímají se o dění u filmů nějak detailně (což je hádám většina? ), ví, co jsou Birds of Prey, a proč je tam v tý závorce Harley Quinn? Některým možná napoví jméno Harley Quinn, která si získala oblibu díky Suicide Squad. A nakonec, do názvu blockbusteru bych nedávala slovo emancipace, zní to divně (a ani český překlad nic moc, ale tentokrát nás slovenští distributoři překonali). ----- Nyní se konečně dostávám k filmu a k tomu, proč už mu změny názvu stejně nepomůžou: ten film je hovadina, strašná blbost a naprostá zbytečnost. Začnu ale tím, co je na něm dobré. Nejlepší byla určitě akce, ta mě bavila a díky ní ten film i docela utíkal, protože v poměru s klidnými scénami je to tak půl na půl. Sice nerada, ale musím ocenit i tu snahu vyprávět příběh trochu jinak a taky to, že linky všech postav do sebe nakonec hezky zapadnou. Kromě Deadpoola mi přišlo, že se tvůrci snaží napodobit ještě Strážce Galaxie a zkombinovat je se Suicide Squad, jenže tady to nefunguje ? Birds of Prey (když už se na těch posledních pět minut konečně dají dohromady) nejsou tak sehrané jako Strážci, jejich komunikace sestává většinou z trapných dialogů a to, jak se rozhodnou se spojit jsem jim nevěřila už vůbec. Díky Birds of Prey se opět vracím k podělanému názvu ? o Birds of Prey tady kromě těch posledních pět minut vůbec nejde. Je to o Harley Quinn a té její ?emancipaci“, ale jestli takhle má vypadat emancipace… K tomu ještě Harley není postava, která by sama zvládla utáhnout film, na to podle mě není dost zajímavá. Zde jí navíc i od toho Jokera odstřihli v animovaném úvodu, který mi připomínal animované titulky u Deadpoola, a jako takový se mi taky nelíbil ? chápu, že tam nechtěli ukazovat Jareda Leta, ale úplně stačilo narvat to do jedné z mnoha otravných promluv Harley… Zklamalo mě i představení ostatních postav, zejména Huntress, ze které udělali rozpačitou holku zkoušející si proslov před zrcadlem. Fakt to nebylo vtipný a měli to vystřihnout. To i v Arrowovi jí zpracovali líp. Zklamali mě i s Black Canary, která použila svůj hlas pouze jednou! To i mutant Banshee v X-Men: První třída použil svou schopnost vícekrát, a to měl oproti Black Canary v příběhu menší roli. V komentářích jsem už četla i stížnosti na zpracování Cassandry Cain. Slyšela jsem, že to měla být dcera assasínů, takže to rozhořčení naprosto chápu... Takhle bych mohla to, co mi vadilo, vypisovat ještě dlouho. Ve výsledku nemůžu jít výš než na dvě hvězdy. 4/10 (21. 2. 2020) Rozjuchaná drsná sranda, přesně v duchu komiksů, kde Harley řádí utržená z Jokerova řetězu. Hodně se asi bude srovnávat s Deadpoolem, a částečně to bude oprávněné, ale pro mě jsou Birds of Prey o kus lepší než Deadpool, kterého mi pokazila přemíra příliš pubertálních vtipů. Tady je totiž vše ve správném poměru, film je velmi pestrý, bohatý na leccos od třpytek po přelámané nohy, a přitom drží pěkně pohromadě a nic z něj netrčí. Královnou je samozřejmě Margot Robbie, která do role dává úplně všechno a užívá si ji stejně jako jsem si ji užil i já. Kromě fajn ztřeštěného psychohumoru ale musím vyzdvihnout i režii a hlavně dokonalou choreografii akčních scén, protože něco tak povedeného jsem viděl naposledy asi v Johnu Wickovi 3. Tipuji, že tenhle film bude patřit k těm, které mají mnohem raději diváci než kritici, a jedním dechen dodávám: No a? ___P. S. Tak on se na akčních scénách podílel Chad Stahelski! To všechno vysvětluje. (5. 2020) Jigy Musím říci, že jsem byl mile překvapen. Všude jsem četl samou kritiku a hate, ale ve výsledku to je vlastně dobrý, vtipný a střelený. Když divák přistoupí na hru, kterou film hned na začátku nastaví, tak se dobře baví. Je to prostě bláznivá taškařice jedné střelené postavy, která ve svých činech nehledá logiku ani následek. Dělá si co chce, vypráví příběh jak se jí líbí a celkově Harly příběhem plyne tak jak se věci kolem stávají. Pokud se mělo jednat o ženský bláznivý protipól Jokera, tak se to tvůrcům myslím povedlo. Birds jsou bláznivá, místy brutální, jízda ve které exceluje ženský element snažící se vymanit z maskulinního uspořádání Godhamského podsvětí. A vše vede kompletně nespoutaná Harley. Ona už sada plakátů a skvělé trailery daly najevo, jak moc vtipná jízda to bude. Vysloveně kongeniální mi přišel trailer na klasickou písničku Björk It's Oh So Quiet. Margot Robbie byla očividně tím jediným, co přežilo nechvalně proslulý Suicide Squad a aby se nenudila, dostala na hraní další tým. Tentokrát tedy holčičí sestavu Birds of Prey. Nemusím asi vysvětlovat, že v komiksech ty postavy fungují jinak, jinak fungují i animáky atd. Tohle je klasická akční formulka o tom, kterak se z dříve záporné postavy pomalu stává postava kladná. A takové mám nejradši. Hezky si to žánrově hraje, mrká na čtenáře sekvenčního umění (nechybí pan bobr) a na pohodu se to vyrovnává s tím vším, co bylo třeba v DC filmech poklidit a zavřít zase na chvíli do skříně.
