About Nickname: La Albicelestes Best Finish: Winner (1921, 1925, 1927, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1991 and 1993) FIFA Ranking: 11th in the world and 3rd in CONMEBOL Introduction This year, after multiple failures in previous Copa Americas after losing in the final, the Albicelestes will be looking forward to what hopefully be a successful international competition and bring the trophy home after 26 years. After the losses in the finals to Chile on penalties 2 Copas in a row, the team, captained by Lionel Messi, are having very high expectations for what could be Messi¡Çs second to last Copa. Manager and Squad Goalkeepers: Esteban Andrada (Boca Juniors), Franco Armani (River Plate), Agustin Marchesin (Club America). Defenders: Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City), Juan Foyth (Tottenham Hotspur), Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax), Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal), Renzo Saravia (Racing), German Pezzella (Fiorentina), Milton Casco (River Plate). Midfielders: Marcos Acuna (Sporting CP), Angel Di Maria (Paris Saint-Germain), Roberto Pereyra (Watford), Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis), Leandro Paredes (Paris Saint-Germain), Rodrigo De Paul (Udinese), Exequiel Palacios (River Plate), Guido Rodriguez (Club America). Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Lautaro Martinez (Inter), Matias Suarez (River Plate). Manager: Lionel Scaloni Potential Starting XI Armani Pezzella Otamendi Saravia Tagliafico Paredes Lo Celso Palacios Pereyra/Di Maria Messi Aguero Players to Watch Lionel Messi The captain of the team, and the man who has to bear the weight of the Argentina team on his shoulders. Messi comes off a stellar individual season, netting an impressive 51 goals and 19 assists in 50 games played for FC Barcelona. One can hope that his partnership with Aguero can produce wonders for the Argentinian squad Sergio Aguero The striker had another great season, and was in good form for Manchester City, netting 32 goals in 46 appearances. Aided by good midfield and wingers, Aguero looks to be the highest or second highest goalscorer in this Argentine side. Giovani Lo Celso After an excellent season with Real Betis, Lo Celso is generating a lot of hype, with rumours that a number of big clubs, including Tottenham, are looking to sign the 23 year old. A creative player with an impressive passing range, Lo Celso also showed he was quite versatile in the number of roles he played with Betis, from false 9 to a deeper midfield position. He could relieve some of the burden Messi has felt from trying be both the creator and scorer of goals. Discussion Points Does the absence of Mauro Icardi affect the squad, and how much of an effect would it be The reason for Mauro Icardi¡Çs snub is the long absence from the pitch that the former Inter Milan captain sustained following the drama that ensued after he was stripped of his captaincy. Also, his form for the Albicelestes is not great, having scored one goal in 8 appearances. About Nickname(s): Los Cafeteros, La Tricolor Best Finish: Champions (2001) FIFA Ranking: 12 Introduction Colombia's Copa America is full of uncertainties. After earning a respectable third place finish in the Copa America Centenario, the team struggled in the World Cup, resulting in the end of Jose Nestor Pekerman's six-year tenure. New hire Carlos Queiroz has remained coy about his expectations this tournament, preferring to focus Colombia's growth as a team. The Portuguese coach has already begun this process by replacing many aging players with new and untested talent as la tricolor enters a period of change. Will Queiroz succeed in bringing home silverware? Manager and Squad Manager: Carlos Queiroz Goalkeepers: David Ospina (Arsenal), Camilo Vargas (Deportivo Cali), Alvaro Montero (Deportes Tolima) Defenders: Cristian Zapata (AC Milan), Stefan Medina (Monterrey), Santiago Arias (Atletico Madrid), William Tesillo (Leon), Yerry Mina (Everton), Cristian Borja (Sporting CP), John Lucumi (KRC Genk), Davinson Sanchez (Tottenham Hotspur) Midfielders: Wilmar Barrios (Zenit St Petersburg), Edwin Cardona (Pachuca), James (Real Madrid), Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (Juventus), Mateus Uribe (America), Jefferson Lerma (AFC Bournemouth), Gustavo Cuellar (Flamengo) Forwards: Radamel Falcao (Monaco), Duvan Zapata (Atalanta), Luis Diaz (Junior de Barranquilla), Luis Muriel (Fiorentina), Roger Martinez (America) POTENTIAL STARTING XI Players to Watch Duvan Zapata After bouncing around Serie A teams for five years, it seems Zapata has finally found his home with Atalanta. In a stunning debut season, he outscored the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Piatek with 23 goals in the league, as well as assisting 7. The 28-year-old target man will be eager to continue his fantastic form in the Copa America, although it is unclear if and how Queiroz will use him during the tournament. James Rodriguez Surely a name we'll see often this summer, regardless of his performance in Brazil. After a mediocre sophomore season with Bayern Munich, he's back and still unwanted at Real Madrid. The 27-year-old midfielder will likely try to use the Copa America campaign as an opportunity to display his talent to any potential clubs. Discussion Points New Manager, New Tactics Carlos Queiroz has been Colombia manager since February and in that time has only played four games with the team. Perhaps because of this lack of experience, Queiroz has focused on building a squad full of versatile players that can adapt to sudden tactical changes as he searches for the winning formula. He has also emphasized reshaping the team's psychology, focusing on teamwork and humility as opposed to the more relaxed atmosphere the players are familiar with. These goals are sure to inspire hope in many Colombia fans, but it remains to be seen if the former Real Madrid manager will be able to effect enough change before the tournament begins. (Beginning of) The End of an Era Colombia's second golden generation has begun to lose its gleam. Already gone are veterans Carlos Sanchez, Abel Aguilar, and Carlos Bacca, while key players David Ospina, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, Cristian Zapata, and Falcao are all 30 or over. For these players, the Copa America 2019 will most likely be their penultimate chance to win a title with their national team. Queiroz is not afraid of change, and if the senior players of the squad let him down, this tournament may mark the end of their international career. However, the current squad features several notable potential replacements, such as youthful center back Jhon Lucumi (winner of the Belgian league and youngest member of the squad), goalkeeper Alvaro Montero, tricky winger Luiz Diaz, and criminally underrated and underused defensive midfielder Gustavo Cuellar. This Copa America won't mark the end of our most successful era, but it will be one of its closing chapters. About Nickname: Los Guaraníes, La Albirroja (White and red) Best Finish: Champions (1953, 1979) FIFA Ranking: 36 (8 in CONMEBOL) Introduction With their warrior spirit, no one ever likes going up against Paraguay. They may lack in big names, but they are tough, relentless and will play their hearts out till the final whistle. The decade has been a mixed one for La Albirroja, certainly not as consistent as the decade following their 1998 World Cup appearance. A memorable quarter-final appearance at the 2010 World Cup was followed by a runners-up finish at the 2011 Copa America. They failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, finishing bottom of the ladder. Following this Copa America 2015 saw a return to winning ways, eliminating Brazil on the way to the semifinals. Copa America Centenario would not be so joyful for Paraguay, leaving with only a single point. After that Paraguay missed out on a playoff spot for Russia 2018 by only 2 points. Once seen perhaps as only second to Brazil and Argentina in the first decade of the 21st century, the 2010s have seen the likes of Colombia and Peru clearly surpass them. Paraguay will be underdogs going into matches against Argentina and Colombia, and Asian Cup Champions Qatar can surely not be underestimated. With the odds already looking a bit grim, questions also have to be asked about how the revolving door of managers has affected the team. Juan Carlos Osorio left after only 4 months in charge, leaving new manager Eduardo Berizzo with less than half a year to sort out this team. It¡Çs an instability that is reflected in their recent record, from their last 8 matches Paraguay have only managed one win. Still though, if they can get a win against Qatar, and possibly even a draw against one of the other teams, they are in with a shot at reaching the second round Manager and Squad Coach: Eduardo Berizzo (Argentina) Goalkeepers: Antony Silva (Huracan), Junior Fernandez (Botafogo), Alfredo Aguilar (Olimpia) Defenders: Gustavo Gomez (Palmeiras), Bruno Valdez (America), Ivan Piris (Libertad), Junior Alonso (Boca Juniors), Fabian Balbuena (West Ham), Juan Escobar (Cerro Porteno), Santiago Arzamendia (Cerro Porteno), Ivan Torres (Olimpia) Midfielders: Richard Ortiz (Olimpia), Hernan Perez (Espanyol), Juan Rodrigo Rojas (Olimpia), Celso Ortiz (Monterrey), Miguel Almiron (Newcastle), Matias Rojas (Defensa Y Justica) Forwards Oscar Cardozo (Libertad), Oscar Romero (Shanghai Shenhua), Derlis Gonzalez (Santos), Federico Santander (Bologna), Cecillo Dominguez (Independiente) Players to Watch Miguel Almiron After an injury ended his Premier League season, it is hard to really know how fit Almiron is, but the match against Guatemala did suggest he is looking good. What we do know is that in the relatively short time at Newcastle, he has looked like one of their best players. Carrying on from Atlanta United, Almiron is a fast runner and excellent playmaker with an incre
