After Pete Dunne’s shocking actions at NXT Takeover Boston, the sights of British Strong Style are set on NXT Takeover Wargames 4 in Dallas. Weeks pass with domination from all of the men in British Strong Style with each imposing a threat to the rest of the NXT roster. The British Men are royalty here in NXT. Mustache Mountain has their own obstacles to overcome as they are asked by William Regal to defend their NXT Tag Team Titles! Gaining that shot was Breezango, hungry for their first taste of tag team gold in WWE. The match was made and booked for two weeks with MM ready and willing to fight. In the same week as Mountain is in action, Pete Dunne has a huge clash for himself. The Bruiserweight has earned a number one contenders match after putting away Matt Riddle. A win for him earns himself an NXT Title Bout at Wargames and he is more than ready to make it happen. His opponent, the wily Tommasso Ciampa, who is looking to get back to the belt he loves dearly. The week preceding the show, Pete Dunne approaches Mustache Mountain backstage. He makes the two an offer and suggests a plan. Dunne tells Mustache Mountain that they have a lot to learn from him. He notes that he is the hottest thing going in NXT and he wants them to be on his side completely. They’re brothers and ultimately he wants to make history with them. He wants them to give in to the intensity that has boosted him to where he is at. And so he makes an offer. He’ll accompany them in the Main Event against Breezango, as long as they do the same. And from then on, the three of them will all rule NXT together. Bate starts to politely decline, but the older Seven agrees as the leader of the duo and Dunne happily shakes the two’s hands. Bate raises a curious look but ultimately embraces the others and goes back to his normal preparation. October 14th 2020 NXT In the opening match of NXT Pete Dunne takes on Tommasso Ciampa with a shot at Velveteen Dream’s NXT Title on the line! The match is hard hitting and intense with each man throwing everything they have at one another. The closing moments of the match come with Ciampa thrown to the outside with Bate and Seven watching on the outside as well. Dunne yells at the two to hit him and reluctantly, Seven throws a shot at him with Bat holding off. Ciama tears free and nails a Fairytale Ending on Seven before running back in. However, he runs directly into Dunne who lifts him up into a Bitter End! Dunne covers and gets the win! Dunne is booked for NXT Takeover War Games and will earn a title shot against Velveteen Dream. Unbeknownst to Bate’s reluctance, Dunne celebrates with both members of Mustache Mountain, promising them they’ll get their win in the main event. However, despite Dunne’s guarantee, his own actions cost Mustache Mountain their win and titles. In the clusters of confusion in the match, Dunne aimed to pick off Breeze, but ate a Beauty Shot as a reward for his efforts. This flaw distracted Seven who got rolled up from behind by Fandango for the cover and the title win! Bate and Seven held their heads disappointed but Dunne came into the ring to yell at them to fight back. Dunne tells both men to look at him as he delivers Bitter Ends to both men of Breezango. The two look on in confusion and roll out of the ring. The closing shot of the episode features Dunne angrily yelling at his stablemates to be brutal while they look on upset. The shot features Dunne and Riddle on opposite sides with Seven in the middle showing imagery between the fight over the two’s attitudes. Weeks leading up to Takeover WarGames 4 On the road to Wargames, Dunne continues to fight for the hearts of Mustache Mountain. The Bruiserweight viciously attacks Dream in the week prior and takes shortcuts that rarely affected him in the previous years in NXT. Bate tries to talk to Seven about it, but he doesn’t listen much and the three members of Mustache Mountain seem to be at odds. However, despite all of this, the three manage to win a 6 Man Tag against their opponents at Wargames. Dunne tells his partners that he will be by their side to get them a win against Breezango, whether they like it or not. On the other side, Bate tells Dunne he can handle his business on his own and promises him he will not accompany Dunne in the main event. The show is set in Dallas with more than just the titles at stake. NXT Takeover War Games 4 At Wargames, the fate of British Strong Style is at hand. With all of the groups clashing over the past few months and various levels of success, each will try one final time to get on the same page for their title matches on the night. Given the fact that the WarGames Match is in the main event, Dunne and Dream as well as Breezango vs Mustache Mountain are on the undercard. Dunne’s match comes first on the night as he takes on Velveteen Dream. Normally a no nonsense wrestler, Dunne meanly mocks Dream with an elaborate entrance featuring a fur coat and cigar. By his side, Trent Seven, but noticeably absent is Tyler Bate. Dream also makes a particularly over the top one, dressed in his gold to match the belt around his waist. At the match’s start, Dunne offers a handshake to Dream, but pulls it away at the last moment, enraging Dream and starting the match off with fury. The match is much slower than Dream’s normal pace. With the announcers crediting Dunne for wrestling in his own style. The match is very much dominated by Dunne as Dream slowly but surely goes on to regret relatively disregarding Dunne. Dunne makes quick work of the valiant champion, not burying him but also showing that his reign is not one to be tempered with. A new NXT champion is crowned in Pete Dunne! Mustache Mountain reaches the co main event slot as the two men are accompanied to the ring by Dunne much to the chagrin of Bate. Breezango makes a fun entrance to pop the crowd and seems to be wrestling face for this match. The match itself is a story itself with Dunne encouraging the pairing to be aggressive. Seven follows along, but Bate is reluctant and doesn’t take the action to put them away unfairly. The closing moments of the match are another chapter itself in the story BSS has endured. Dunne reaches under the ring and tosses a chair to Bate who is in the ring with a wounded Fandango and a downed referee. Bate can’t bring himself to hit the ref, instead lets the chair down. Dango uses the moment to sneak in from behind and lock on a sleeper hold to Bate! Bate is fighting and fading, but out of nowhere a towel is thrown in from off screen! Just like Bate did to him in their first NXT Title defense, Seven has thrown in the title for his partner. Bate is livid, and all of the sudden gets cracked over the dome by Dunne with a chair!! Pete Dunne has snapped on Tyler Bate! He motions to Trent Seven who lifts Bate up and hits a Burning Hammer onto a chair! The crowd is stunned! The announcers are too! Dunne grabs a mic and utters “You did this to yourself Tyler, ” before exiting the ring with Seven right behind him. Heartbreak here in Dallas. Road To Takeover Los Angeles At Takeover Seattle on the road to Takeover LA, Dunne fends off Velveteen Dream one more time and gears up for his path at Takeover LA. Trent Seven follows him like a lackey, attempting to back him up and creating a bond with him similar to the one he threw away with Bate. As for Bate, the weeks following Takeover War Games are tough as he looks to rebound from heartbreak. Although he isn’t in action, NXT GM William Regal gives him an opportunity to earn a title shot against Dunne at Takeover LA. This comes in the form of Trent Seven. If Bate can manage to defeat his former mentor, he will have a world title match at NXT’s biggest event. In a series of Black and White vignettes, we see Bate training and preparing for the match itself and Dunne lackadaisically having confidence in the fact that Bate wouldn't make it to Takeover. The story however, takes a turn. As on the last NXT before Takeover LA, Bate is scheduled to take on Seven. The match is slotted for the main event and it is Bate using fighting spirit to try and put Seven away. Bate looks to have it done and nails a Tyler Driver 97, but as he is going to pin Seven, Dunne sneaks from behind and wacks him with the infamous steel chair. Knowing Bate was going to win, Dunne is now looking to inflict damage into Bate to soften him for their main event match. The closing shot is one last Bitter End onto a chair with Pete Dunne standing tall with his foot over a downed Tyler Bate. NXT Takeover Los Angeles Bate vs Dunne 3 is highlighted by the announcers as the Main Event. Throughout the night, video packages with the two men are shown, highlighting their friendship, highs and lows, struggles and eventual explosion. The match itself is the last one of the night, with the crowd already built up to a frenzy, the climax of a years long rivalry culminates tonight! Tyler Bate makes his entrance, stopping at the top of the ramp to soak everything in as he looks ready to fight his former brother in arms. Dunne storms in furiously, without Seven and makes his way into the ring, raising the title in Bate’s face. Bate stands firm, but as Greg Hamilton makes the introductions, both men break free and brawl with one another. The ref finally rings the bell and we are underway. The first few moments of the match feature back to back strikes as the two men slap, chop and punch their respective opponents' faces off. The two engage in a hard hitting affair early, ending with both kicking one another to the mat at the same time. The raucous crowd offers its applause with both men tired already after the first few minutes. Dunne is the first to find his feet and he begins to toss Bate around like a ragdoll, suplexing the smaller man over and over. However, Bate is able to get a quick momentum switch, slipping out of the back of an attem
Hello NJPW subreddit. How's everyone doing? Safe and healthy, I hope. I've finally gotten around to doing something I've wanted to do for a long time, and that's to go through the "modern history" of NJPW, and I've chose Wrestle Kingdom V as my starting point. I'll be going through as many events as I can chronologically, and I'll be sharing my thoughts here on this subreddit. I'll also be providing NJPW World links here whenever I can so that you can watch the shows as well. Note that not every match from every show is on NJPW World, so if a show/match isn't on the website, but I have, ahem, alternative access to it, I'll talk about as well. My collection doesn't get too complete until 2015 or so, though. I invite everyone to comment along on what you think about the show as well. I'd love to hear from both people who have been fans of NJPW for a long time, and from people who may also be unfamiliar with this time before the last few years. So strap yourselves in. This is a 4. 5 hour show and we're covering all of it EDIT: I went back and spoiler tagged all the finishes and results. I know this is a 9-year old show, but if people are gonna be going into this fresh and watch along, I may as well help out by not making it easy to see every result. -------------------- There were a few starting points I could have chosen. I could have skipped 2011 altogether and start from Wrestle Kingdom VI, where Okada would make his official return to NJPW from excursion and debut the Rainmaker, but 2011 has some moments that I wanted to go through, as it was a pretty eventful year for the company. 2011 was an interesting year for New Japan. It was the last year where NJPW featured TNA talent, and thus was the end of their relationship, the year the Intercontinental Championship was first created, and the year Minoru Suzuki returned to NJPW full-time and started Suzuki-gun by overthrowing Kojima from his own faction. It was also the year of two epic title reigns. First was the IWGP Tag Team Championship reign of Bad Intentions (Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson), who won the titles at the previous year's Dominion and would go on to hold the titles for the entire year (spoilers for their match at this show). The other reign was Hiroshi Tanahashi's historic IWGP Heavyweight Championship reign, lasting 404 days (the second longest at that point) and making 11 successful defenses, breaking Nagata's record of 10 defenses. And thus, we kick of the year with NJPW's biggest show: Wrestle Kingdom -------------------- 8-Person Tag Match Wataru Inoue, Tama Tonga, Tiger Mask, Tomoaki Honma vs Yujiro Takahashi, Tomohiro Ishii, Gedo, Jado [Chaos] So let's begin with the dark ma- oh. Oh wow, Tama Tonga. Afro, leopard print trunks, and barefoot. Not gonna cramp on his style. I'm just gonna say that this is a very different Tama Tonga from who we know now. This is the kind of stuff I look forward to in these sorts of retrospectives ( shout-outs to crew cut Ishii), and this isn't gonna be the last future-Bullet Club member we'll see on this show. I mean, Yujiro's even on the other side of this match. Anyway, this match is your hodge-podge of wrestlers vs the CHAOS undercard. This is only a year or so into CHAOS's lifespan, and they are still very much heels (Ishii tries to take Tiger Mask's mask of after the match is done). It's your standard undercard multi-person tag. CHAOS works over the babyfaces for a while, Tiger Mask and Wataru Inoue get hot tags, everyone gets a moment to shine. Result: Wataru Inoue pins Gedo with the Spear of Justice I don't think Wataru Inoue does anything too significant from here on. 2010 seems to be the last year when he got any major achievements, winning the IWGP Tag Titles and the G1 Tag League with Yuji Nagata as Seigigun. A bit of a shame he didn't do much before his forced retirement. Also, I'm not gonna rate these dark matches. There's some stuff to talk about, though, so I'll just touch on them. -------------------- Tag Match Koji Kanemoto & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Kenny Omega & Taichi Ishikari Wow, we have young Kenny Omega, Taichi (clad in all white, but already has the tearaway pants gimmick), and Ryusuke Taguchi. Also, Koji Kanemoto is here. He'd leave NJPW later in the year. There is a bit of a story going into this match. Kenny Omega is a IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, along with Kota Ibushi, having won the belts off of Apollo 55, Ryusuke Taguchi and Prince Devitt. Kota Ibushi isn't tagging with Kenny in this match because he's challenging Devitt for his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship later in the show. This is a standard Jr. Tag match. Fast paced, quick tags, dives to the outside, etc. Result: Ryusuke Taguchi pins Taichi Ishikari with a Rana pin This also might be a good time to note the Young Lions at ringside. I can recognize three (well, I recognized two, and the other I could figure out who it was from pictures), who are still current NJPW wrestlers. King Fale (aka Bad Luck Fale), Hiromu Takahashi, and Kyosuke Mikami (aka El Desperado) can all be seen as Young Lions throughout this show. There's another prominent young lion there, but I can't figure out who its is. If you know who he is, let me know. -------------------- Main Matches: -------------------- Match 1 [Not on NJPW World]: Triple Threat Tornado Tag Match, IWGP Tag Team Championship Bad Intentions (Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson) (c) vs Beer Money Inc (James Storm & Robert Roode), [TNA] vs Muscle Orchestra (Manabu Nakanishi & Strong Man) And we start the main card with... a match that's not on NJPW World. Hmmm. Yeah, none of the matches from this show that feature TNA wrestlers are on the app, which is a bit of a shame. Ah well. This is a big man tag match. A lot of big men, and a lot of foreigners. Bad Intentions are in the middle of their year-and-a-half reign as tag champions, and the main feud here is between them and Beer Money Inc., who pinned Bad Intentions in a non-tournament match during the G1 Tag League. Muscle Orchestra are here too... for some reason. I think it's because they were the Tokyo Sport's tag team of the year for 2010? I dunno. More big men. That being said, I enjoyed this match. Lots of big men doing big moves. Even the lazily named Strong Man had some good spots. The pace was fast and consistent. A heavyweight version of the Jr Tag Matches that would open later Wrestle Kingdoms. Result: Karl Anderson pins Robert Roode with the Gun Stun - Champions Retain After the match is done, Giant Bernard yells "Shin Nihon Ichiban! " ("New Japan is number 1! ") at Beer Money Inc. Rating: 6/10 Like I said, an enjoyable multi-big man match. -------------------- Tag Match, "Road to FantasticaMania" Jushin Thunder Liger & Hector Garza [CMLL] vs La Sombra & Mascara Dorada [CMLL] This is really mainly a CMLL exhibition match, showing off CMLL's stars, because 2011 is also the year of the first Fantastica Mania event, which would take place 3 weeks after Wrestle Kingdom. There are a lot of WWE connections in this match. Both La Sombra (aka Andrade "Cien" Almas) and Mascara Dorada (aka Gran Metalik) currently work for WWE, and Hector Garza's son (Humberto Carillo) and nephew (Angel Garza) both work for WWE as well. Both La Sombra and Mascara Dorada worked with NJPW the year before, teaming together in the Super Jr Tag League. La Sombra also participated in that year's BOSJ. Conversely, this was Hector Garza's first appearance with NJPW, though he wouldn't work many more dates with New Japan. He would be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012, causing his death in 2013. The match itself was, as I said, pretty much an exhibition match for the men involved. Lots of flips, lots of dives, lots of flippy dives, etc. Also, I think it was lucha libre tag rules, so legal men were switching on the fly. Result: La Sombra pins Jushin Thunder Liger with a corkscrew crossbody Rating: 5/10 Fun match. Fun high spots. Not the smoothest match, but it was fine. -------------------- Deep Sleep to Lose Match (you can only win by choking out your opponent) Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Takashi Iizuka [Chaos] The first singles match on the card is a gimmick match between Takashi Iizuka and Hiroyoshi Tenzan. Tenzan had his first proper NJPW match after coming back from a knee injury in Dec 2010, and he was attacked after the match by Iizuka, who choked him out with a sleeper hold. Iizuka would continue to attack Tenzan with sleeper holds in the following weeks, thus the stipulation for the grudge match was set as a match where you could only win by choking your opponent out. Tenzan and Iizuka are long time rivals. They used to be a team until Iizuka turned on Tenzan to join GBH, the stable Tenzan used to lead that that had already previously kicked Tenzan out. This was a re-kindling of that feud. Iizuka let his crazy side out in this match. He attacked one of the commentators before the match, and he started the match with Tenzan by brawling in the crowd. Unfortunately, the rest of the match as a bit of a boring brawl. From what I understand, both Iizuka and Tenzan are pretty banged up in this point of their careers, so they can't go too hard. It's a shame, but the match is still boring. The finish comes when Iizuka knocks Tenzan into the referee as Tenzan is escaping from his sleeper hold. Iizuka then stomps on Tenzan's balls and goes for his iron finger. Then, Wataru Inoue comes out of nowhere to prevent Iizuka from using the iron finger. Then, after a few Mongolian chops, a spinning heel kick, and a TTD (Tenzan Tombstone Driver), Tenzan locks in the Anaconda Vice, performs his Anaconda Buster, and then locks in a modified Anaconda Vice to choke out Iizuka Result: Hiroyoshi Tenzan submits Takashi Iizuka with a modified Anaconda Vice Young Lions come in to break up the hold when Tenzan keeps it held after the match is done Rating: 4/10 Like I said, a decent match. A bit boring, but inoffensive. -------------------- Match 4 [Not on N
