For his first "fiction" movie (which uses only real facts as inspiration) he made a masterpiece.

It is a music of the people who will not be slaves again

Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2016 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase This is an excellent version of the story and I love, love, LOVE it. The actors especially, Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins are outstanding. I first saw this made for television movie when it originally aired back in 1978 and bought the vhs tape as soon as I was aware of it. Unfortunately, what I saw on Amazon is butchered and that is a crime. It is missing about 20 minutes of the original 220 (roughly) minutes. This movie deserves 5 stars but I only give it 3 because of all the chop chop. Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2020 Format: DVD Verified Purchase Finally got around to watching this version of "Les Miserables (1978)". The DVD case said "Les Miserables". The silk screening on the DVD media said "Les Miserables". Loaded up the DVD into the player and lo and behold, much to my surprise it was "Ephraim's Rescue"! (And you thought I was going to say "eight tiny reindeer", eh? ) Anyway, it was too late to return the DVD to Amazon and so I watched this unexpected movie instead. Now mind you, this was NOT Amazon's fault, as this was obviously a manufacturing error/flaw/defect and I should have played the DVD within the 30-day free return period. And so, I guess this review will be, in actuality, a discussion about "Ephraim's Rescue". Now this movie would probably be, and maybe has, aired on BYUTV. But so as not to spoil your viewing pleasure, this was a quite good and enjoyable humanistic film without too much religious overtones. All things being equal, would I have gone out of my way to view/watch/purchase this movie? No. Was it a good/decent movie? Yes. Would I watch it again? Sure. Would I recommend it to others? Umm, yeah. Don't let my one-star rating deceive you. It's only because I was looking forward to the 1978 version of "Les Miserables" and got totally blind-sided by what was burned onto the DVD disc. An unexpected but overall pleasant surprise. Thumbs up for "Ephraim's Rescue", thumbs down for the DVD media manufacturer/production for encoding the wrong movie, silk screening the wrong label, and mislabeling the DVD case. Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2012 Format: DVD Verified Purchase I first saw this version of Victor Hugo's classic in the late seventies and, to this day, I'm impressed by the quality of the production. Most of us know the story of Jean Valjean, a man who was imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister's starving family. The story moves on to the barbaric cruelty of penal systems of that time and place where Jean slowly, over a period of decades, loses his humanity and becomes like some caged and mistreated animal whose thoughts are only of escape and revenge. Finally, Valjean does escape and meets "a good Priest" who "withdraws all evil thoughts" from him and thereafter Valjean commits his life to good. His nemesis, Javert, always remembers the convict that escaped from the prison where he was chief of guards. By strange circumstance, Javert and Valjean cross paths several times with Valjean always managing to escape. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen this classic, so I'll end the synopsis there. Suffice it to say, this is an excellent adaptation of Hugo's powerful story. But, this is an adaptation and doesn't follow the book exactly. In a movie of this length, this is not surprising. What is surprising is how well it is done. Richard Jordan gives an excellent performance as Valjean while Anthony Perkins (known mainly for playing Norman Bates in Hitchcock's "Psycho") gives an equally fine performance as Javert. The cast includes excellent actors in supporting roles such as John Gielgud. This is a well-acted, directed and produced film that I recommend wholeheartedly. Five stars. Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2012 Format: DVD Verified Purchase *Length Note* My recollection is first seeing this 1978 movie as a two-night TV broadcast (perhaps 1. 5 to 2 hours each night). The presentation was thickly peppered with commercial space and scenes-to-come, watch-tomorrow-for, and previously-seen vignettes as additional filler. I have worn out my 1993 ITC VHS copy and find it to be quite as I remember the original presentation, scenes intact and pacing all. The VHS version is timed at 123 minutes, just as this DVD is. In other words, it is essentially the same as you might remember without the extra filler. They might have titled this film, "The Bishop's Silver" as it is really a terrific screenplay distilled from the Victor Hugo novel that focuses on the Jean ValJean transformation and not the full epic. The film is better for this as it keeps Hugo's monstrously complex web of characters and circumstances from diluting the intensity of the ValJean character. It presents itself to the audience as a really engaging cat and mouse chase set amongst some very fine Merchant-Ivory style backdrops. I've only encountered Richard Jordan's work in Logan's Run and The Civil War miniseries (his last work). His work in this movie is spell-binding without chewing scenery or heavy dialogue. Anthony Perkins may have won an Oscar for Psycho, but he embodies Insp Javert as though born for the part. All of the other actors do justice to their roles, with special note to the great Claude Dauphin. His depiction as the kindly bishop carries the grace and gravity of one of the greatest scenes in Western literature. I think it was the actor's last film role. Allyn Ferguson's haunting string soundtrack accents the characters and will stay in your mind for days. This 1978 production shouldn't be judged in comparison to the Broadway musical or Hugo's complete novel. It's a peculiarly good and riveting action movie, really, with an unlikely action hero (ValJean) empowered by the grace and goodness of God. That may sound trite in this age of secularism, but it still works. Watch with your kids and they will remember ValJean long after they've forgotten Ironman and Batman. This movie has an annoying power to move you to tears. It makes you feel the power in "just" being human. Top international reviews 4. 0 out of 5 stars Recommended. Incidentally Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2017 Verified Purchase Having bought and viewed the Depardieu/ Malkovich 'Les Mis' and not having been impressed by this version we bought the earlier, 1975 film. There are plenty of cameo roles played by experienced British actors, and Anthony Perkins makes an impressively obsessive Javert. Although the drift of the novel has been shortened somewhat this did not seem to prejudice the film.. Recommended. Incidentally, Valjean's prison is the castle of Beynac in the Dordogne and other parts of this beautiful region are featured. I mention this as the filming locations are left obscure. I must have recorded it at the time as I remember watching it more than once. There are a few versions and I couldn't be sure that this was the one, but as soon as I saw Christopher Guard playing the part of Marius ( I must have had a small crush on him at the time! ), it all came back to me. This was the film that started my interest in the story. Its good to see before you watch the new version or see it on stage, cos it gives you a bit more background on the story without having to read the book, which to me is a little bit daunting. For this movie I have to say only one thing:Anne Hathaway. エディーレッドメインかっこよすぎて鼻血でた. The first 90 minutes of this film is a quite impressive multiple viewpoint drama showing the difficult interactions in a rundown Paris immigrant neighborhood between an ethically challenged three member police unit, the impoverished immigrant residents (largely Moslem and African) and assorted adolescents. The presentation is quite realistic. I was moved. If the movie had ended there, I might rate it a 9. Unfortunately it did not. Instead the film is marred by its violent not credible ending. Hence my rating of 7. On one day, while investigating a case concerning the theft of a lion cub, the three policemen are set upon by the adolescent thief's teen age friends. The children threaten the police. They throw rocks. The police overreact, seriously injuring the thief as he tries to escape. Various consequences ensue, but in the end a level of calm is apparently restored. Alas, in revenge the next day the three police and several other adults are ambushed by a highly organized gang of young men wearing black hoodies. Garbage cans and shopping carts are thrown at the police down flights of stairs. Flares and fireworks are shot at the police. The police behave stupidly. Rather than wait for back-up, they put themselves into a situation of extreme life-threatening danger. The adolescents, instead of behaving as a disorganized gang of delinquents, suddenly show an almost military level of tactics and organization and a lethal rage. Frightening and as disturbing as this violence is, intellectually I simply could not buy into it. Sorry, but a group of socially marginalized boys cannot be transformed in a single day into an almost military level combat unit.
Im late but its so Emotional ? love it ??wow Thnks Im watching from Amman Jordan ??. Am I the only one who really likes Crowes voice? Like i really love the tone and the way he sings the words! Always was looking forward to his singing in the movie. Can I just say, I hate this for one reason! It ended. One day more. Marius: sings about love Grantaire: Red Enjolras: Don't encourage him. This is my 11th time watching this performance in February 2020 since its inception, and I, as a professor, am still using it as a teaching material as a classic of teaching my students the true tester of the human nature- both Susan and the judges are definitely honest to each other, and it is so pure and authentic that it did and does touch everyone involved then and now.
Took me a week to finish this movie. Let's hope this is what the Hamilton movie will look like. This was the first version of Les Miserables I heard and no regular cast recording can compete with this for me. I always miss the sound of the huge choir. The french are probably thinking: Ohh these weird British people. XD. RED! I feel my soul on fire! BLACK! My world if she's not there! RED! Is the color of desire! BLACK! It's the color of dis bear. 39:30 Castle On a Cloud.
