Complex ideas about love, literature, body image and truth are expressed in its dizzyingly clever rhymes, but essentially it remains a captivating, tragicomic romance. Lloyd’s production feels thrillingly reflective of contemporary London, yet also true to the Parisian original, and there is even a sly reference to ‘cultural appropriation’ to acknowledge its white creators’ use of street slang, hip-hop?stylings?and occasional beatboxing.?Cyrano’s?defining characteristic is panache, and oh boy, this production has it by the?bucketload. Rostand’s?play has been adapted many times for stage and screen, and its central conceit stolen and smuggled into other stories.?Cyrano, a brilliant man who thinks himself ugly is compelled to woo?Roxane, the woman he loves, on behalf of his stupidly handsome rival, Christian. The fact that?Cyrano?is here played by a consummate stage actor who is also a handsome movie star makes us see him as he pitilessly sees himself. He seizes the role with both hands, bringing aggressive swagger and charm to the character’s brawling and versifying exploits, and a bottomless anguish to his romantic plight. The scene where he abandons his native Glaswegian and emulates the melting-pot argot of Eben?Figueiredo’s?Christian to seduce the listening?Roxane?is at first hilarious, then deeply erotic. Microphones are used throughout to amplify the verbal duelling but in?Cyrano’s?final meeting with?Roxane?McAvoy?uses one to generate a startling intimacy. Riveting though he is, this is far from a star vehicle, though.?Cyrano’s?personal pain can often obscure the fact that?Roxane?is manipulated and lied to even by the men who love her, and that Christian’s dumb handsomeness is itself pitiful. One of the many revelations of Crimp’s version is that it gives both characters a proper voice. Anita-Joy?Uwajeh?is dazzling as?Roxane, able to pivot from righteous anger to tenderness to sass in a microsecond: she also manages to pull of a pussy-bow blouse, dungarees and?fugly?trainers with ? yes ? panache.?Figueiredo?brings pathos to Christian and a passionate confusion to his relationship with?Cyrano. The drily hilarious Tom?Edden?and Michele Austin also bring the lecherous De?Guiche?and the baker?Ragueneau?to life. This is a play about performance, so there are plenty of theatrical in-jokes, yet Lloyd’s production never feels arch. Indeed, the scenes during the siege of Arras, partly staged in complete darkness, are very moving. This extraordinary show caps an extraordinary year for Lloyd, in which he has already staged an entire season of Pinter plays, taken his Betrayal to New York, and won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for best musical for?Evita.
