At the end of it, you feel "Chhapaak" could only have been this way. For all its bleak packaging, "Chhapaak" isn't a story of despair. All the reviews comes on day one and many decide based on reviews. specially when there are more than 1 big release. level 1 An interesting point that the HT article makes is that while Tanhaji surpassed its predictions, Chapaak has underperformed, despite the free media coverage it received: Both the films are vastly different in scale and their release. Trade experts had predicted an opening of Rs 5-7 crore for Chaapaak while they expected Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior to open at over Rs 10-14 crore. level 2 Yep- tanhaji had screenings way earlier too and the feedback from them was outstanding. It's about the comparison of both films to their forecasts. Chapaak has massively under-performed while Tanhaji has surpassed expectations - both in terms of box office and critique. level 2 Chhapaak only opened with around 1500 screens. Also a major problem with Chhapaak's release are the low amount of screens overseas. Should've gotten a distributor like YRF. Everytime Fox Star Studios distributes a Hindi film on their own, no one picks it up here in The Netherlands. Meanwhile, we get big releases from Dharma, EROS and T-Series, like Tanhaji. level 1 When artist thinks she and her publicity stunts are bigger than the story, this happens! level 2 To be honest it's possible that Chhapaak could've done even worse if it weren't for the PR move as it had a low-key promotion happening for it because of which many people weren't even aware about the movie, also the fact that before it was just a movie that would be hard to stomach for people who knew about it but because of PR move, watching the movie became like a statement of being a "good person". Even with PR move it was gonna do worse than Tanhaji because of the kind of films they are, so if that was actually a PR move then that was unnecessary as it worked out for Padmaavat because of the way it was and Chhapaak wasn't that. level 2 There was similar stuff going on in Hollywood, movies like Charlies angels flopped and people blamed misogyny. No mention of other female-led movies that did great. level 2 And this was her third time.
