Watch The grudge. I watched all these movies when I was 8 and they scared the ever living shit out of me and they still freak me out. Go back and watch any of the other Grudge movies either the Japanese or the English language version with Sarah Michelle Gellar rather than spend money on this. I would have stopped watching this if it was on cable and I hadn't paid to see it. Why was this even made? It's loosely based on the same idea but has nothing to do with the original story other than one of the main characters goes to Japan to work and comes back to the US. She happened to work at the same house where the vengeful spirit from the originals was attached to. She comes back to the US to her family and starts a chain of events here. It's a very far fetched connection.

Most of the story makes no sense even by horror movie standards and the characters' back stories are almost non-existent. The script must have been a hot, hot mess. The "scary" parts were mostly so ridiculous that we laughed at them. I have a high tolerance for bad horror movies and have enjoyed some movies with bad ratings but this movie was not even good at being bad. I just wanted it to be over.

I grew up on the remake, so i like it better. Until it went bad with the 3rd movie and a little with the second. Lin Shaye and Jackie Weaver were the only reasons I came to see this movie. Their particular vignette was by far the most interesting and should've really centered around them. Andrea Riseborough had a fine performance but I really could not care less about her vignette or the others. Shaye, Weaver and Riseborough delivered with insanity, screams and frustrated heroine-ism, respectively.

Everything else was a waste of time! The cinematography really had potential for a spooky atmosphere. But the overuse of grimy corpses, bugs and ugly colors made this film more "Yuck" than terrifying. I think this film proves a lot of potential for writer and director Nicolas Pesce. A little more horror and less horrible instances in the film would've turned things around. Also, the connection to the 2004 version feels very haphazard. Kind of reminds me why these films stopped happening for a while there. If Lin Shaye and Jackie Weaver were to star in another Nicolas Pesce film that didn't happen to be a remake of not so great franchise anyhow, I'd probably go see it.
