However I was pleasantly surprised (although I shouldn't of been since this is a Satoshi Kon film) by the depth given to every character in this film, and the emotion Kon was able to draw from his screenplay. The three protagonists are all fully fleshed out three dimensional characters. They feel like real people despite this being an animated¡Ä A charming Christmas story that relies intentionally on miracles, the only flaws are a slightly sloppy story and a few unfortunate jokes at the expense of the transsexual character. This might very well be the most down to earth movie director Satoshi Kon has ever made, which is saying a lot about his usual fare. It contains no supernatural elements, no crazy trips into the cracking psyche of man, nothing really out of the ordinary. Yet it is strange enough so as to be recognizable. The plot relies heavily on happy coincidences, but often enough those coincidences are so out there that they have to be intentional, making the seeming laziness of the script into a stylish feature. I certainly had no complaints, the whole story was a blast to follow, especially because you really couldn't predict where it was going. But, beneath all the craziness and oddness, Tokyo Godfathers is a character film and it pulls it off fantastically. All three of the eponymous "godfathers" are deeply layered, tragic, funny and, beyond all else, interesting personalities. Each one is as different from one another as day is from night, yet you can see what pulls them together. They're as interesting separately as they are in a group, but it's the group that drives the individuals to do pretty much anything. I was actually sad to see the film end, because it meant saying goodbye. Tokyo Godfathers is an excellent film on many levels. It is a superb animated film, fantastic characters study and actually a pretty neat Christmas film as well. Definitely worth checking out.

Unfortunately, they have a 2D quality to them, but the falling snow sort of adds a third dimension to them. The picture ends on an exciting note, with a riotous chase featuring a stolen truck, a kidnapped baby and a taxi. It¡Çs funny, it¡Çs exciting, it¡Çs wholly entertaining ? and, unlike many chases, it doesn¡Çt outlast its welcome. It all wraps up with a stunning rooftop freefall and landing that Kon made beautiful, slowing it down in such a way that he was not only easing his character, but also his audience. It finds Satoshi Kon at the height of his powers, taking his audience on all sorts of twists that are equally dramatic and hilarious. Here he struck such a fine balance that the picture never lulls, never bores, never feels off-kilter. Were the animation just a touch stronger, this would likely be a genuine masterpiece. Despite this, it¡Çs meaningful enough that it should be seen on par with the classics. On these Tokyo streets, in the company of Gin, Hana and Miyuki, it¡Çs a wonderful life too.
