" Joey from Blossom had "woah! " And Pete Davidson 's Zeke from Big Time Adolescence has "sick! " To Zeke, "sick! " is a declaration of joy and alarm, of pride and encouragement. You kissed a girl you like? Sick! You see a bright orange '70s reggae album featuring a dude in a giant 'fro? Sick! You've discovered a new revenue stream from reselling your medical marijuana to high schoolers? Sick! Pete Davidson, the zonked-out, tattooed Saturday Night Live cast member and occasional TMZ-headline, deals in "sick! "s like Michelangelo did in marble. Davidson's Zeke is an archetype familiar to many of us, but hasn't been represented too much in movies. To a 16-year-old, a 23-year-old with his own pad ("the chillest place ever"), where you can drink and smoke and play video games, is a god. When someone with independence treats you like a grown-up, but only wants to have fun, it is an irresistible combo. And despite the protestations of well-meaning parents, discovering that this charismatic man-child is something of a loser can only happen in its own time. Sign up for TV Guide's Free Daily Recommendations Newsletter! Mo ( Griffin Gluck, a spitting image for a shorter George Harrison) got to know Zeke as just a tyke, when his older sister (a hilarious Emily Arlook) was dating him. She quickly dropped him when his irresponsible side showed, but the big bro-little bro dynamic Mo and Zeke shared lived on. Now it's six years later and Mo has hardly any friends at school, but plenty of laughs over at Zeke's bong-cluttered nest. Writer-director Jason Orley's script absolutely crackles with wit and all the performances feature exquisite timing. This movie is great the first time, but watching it twice, as I did, offers many pleasures, as there is a dense tapestry of background comedy. And much of it comes from Orley's refusal to let his characters be anything but three-dimensional. For example, there's Mo, much cooler than most 16-year-olds, who brims with confidence one minute (willing to call the girl he likes without much prep) then collapsing the next (whoopsie: he has nothing to say). There's a terrific moment when he trots up a hall and is about to hop over a railing. As he's about to do it, he realizes he's too short, so he immediately reassesses and slips underneath. He does't look too slick doing it, but it's Mo's reality, and he takes it in stride. Tiny moments like this are what set a filmmaker apart. Griffin Gluck and Pete Davidson, Big Time Adolescence Photo: Neon - Hulu Then, of course, there's Davidson, in the part he was born to play. He is absolutely without question a bad influence on Mo. And for sure any 23-year-old who keeps a 16-year-old as their little pet has got some confidence issues. And yet, he's not a villain. The affection Zeke has is real, and beneath the tattoos, inability to maintain a job, quick slide into (mild) drug-dealing, cheating on his girlfriend, and willingness to waste money on an unnecessary foot massager, he's still, in a weird way, a good guy. Or, at least, a good friend. Suburbanites especially ought to go bananas for Big Time Adolescence (it is shot in the Syracuse area) but also anyone who longs for more films like Edge of Seventeen and Boyhood than typical dopey high school fare. There's also something magical about goony Pete Davidson in a grocery store asking, "Yo, bro, you have any pea shoots? " I can't explain why it's funny. And that's exactly what makes it so funny. TV Guide Rating: 5/5 Big Time Adolescence is now on Hulu. ( Disclosure: TV Guide is owned by CBS Interactive, a division of ViacomCBS. ).

Positive Role Models & Representations Naive Monroe falls under Zeke's spell, enthralled with the older guy's good-time, drug-infused slacker life -- a stark contrast to the straight and narrow of Monroe's caring parents. BIG TIME ADOLESCENCE centers on the woes of a 23-year-old slacker named Zeke ( Pete Davidson) and his terrible influence on his ex-girlfriend's far younger brother, Monroe (Griffin Gluck). At 16, Monroe is a naive kid who finds the seemingly charismatic Zeke very appealing. Zeke pays flattering attention to the younger boy, but -- as a drop-out who's working low-wage jobs until he gets bored and deals?marijuana on the side -- he's hardly the role model Monroe's parents would wish for. Seemingly for fun, Zeke encourages Monroe to drink to the point of vomiting and offers him hits from the marijuana he's constantly smoking. Monroe turns it down until he's trapped in a car with Zeke and a friend. Putting his pleasure before Monroe's welfare, Zeke agrees to close the windows and fill the car with smoke, which gets Monroe high. He arrives home nearly incapacitated to his caring but appalled parents, who are hosting a dinner party. Mom and Dad now are certain that the relationship with Zeke has become toxic and a threat to their son's welfare. Unknown to them, Monroe is eagerly supplying marijuana (provided by Zeke) and alcohol to high school friends in order to be invited to parties thrown by seniors. Is it any good? It can be hard to watch a good kid make so many terrible decisions, but under the capable direction of Jason Orley, that's the movie's strength --?it makes us care. Big Time Adolescence 's?script presents the older Zeke with understanding and even affection, almost admiring his completely uncensored and uncalculating ways. Zeke's drug-induced irresponsibility is clear but, in this compassionate view, it doesn't rule out forgiveness for harming Monroe, a kid he really likes. Davidson is perfect as the fast-talking trainwreck of a human who's as easy to like as he is to dislike and pity. Davidson makes us believe that all that irresponsibility doesn't erase the good in Zeke. Nevertheless, as the film ends, a clever camera angle suggests that Monroe will grow out of Zeke's influence and leave the eternally adolescent friend behind. And it's noteworthy that although the female roles here are peripheral, all of the girls portrayed are self respecting and far too smart to continue with oblivious guys who insist on playing games. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about what about Zeke was appealing to Monroe. Do you think it's OK for a 23-year-old to be friends with a 16-year-old? Why or why not? What do you think about the movie's portrayal of drugs and alcohol? It is realistic? Do you think that Zeke has a substance abuse problem? Why or why not? At first, Monroe takes Zeke's advice on how to get a girl to like him. But how does Monroe feel about the advice when he sees how it affects the girl he likes? What do you think Monroe learns from the experience? Our editors recommend Excellent acting in poignant, mature coming-of-age story. Touching, funny, personal, and mature coming-of-age comedy. Poignant teen drama doesn't shy away from alcohol or sex. Superb, smart teen comedy has drinking, strong sex talk. Big time adolescence movie online. E very small town has at least one, and cities have many more: the loser guy who can barely manage life out of high school, who takes and quits random jobs with a shrug, and yet still exerts a strange, drifty allure. Saturday Night Live regular Pete Davidson plays that very guy in Big Time Adolescence (in limited theaters and streaming on Hulu starting today), one of those small delights that¡Çs designed mostly to make you laugh, though it ends in a place of inevitable wistfulness. Davidson plays Zeke, an alleged grownup who lives in his deceased grandma¡Çs house and who spends his days drinking and smoking with his small gang of loser friends. But 16-year-old Mo (Griffin Gluck, in a smart, understated performance) idolizes him. The two have been friends for years; Zeke used to date Mo¡Çs sister, and as Mo explains in a framing voiceover, Zeke was the one person who¡Çd treated him like an adult. The friendship has stuck, much to the dismay of Mo¡Çs father (Jon Cryer, playing the perennial square dad in a way that¡Çs deeply sympathetic). Mo spends all of his spare time with Zeke, and if the friendship seems merely ill-advised at first, it becomes more injurious when Zeke starts sending Mo out to sell weed at high-school parties. You know this can¡Çt end well, but writer-director Jason Orley makes you see Zeke¡Çs offbeat charisma, even as you acknowledge what a terrible influence he is. Davidson is wonderful here. His all-out oddness is a large part of his gift; as Zeke, he¡Çs like the awkward, fear-of-failure parts of all of us rolled into one person. The circles under his eyes speak of one long sleepless night, as if he¡Çd just taken a red-eye from the moon. At one point he and Mo pop into a record store and Zeke blows some of the weed-selling earnings on random stuff, including an early 1980s R&B oddity. (It happens to be Rim and Kasa¡Çs Too Tough. ) When they get back to Zeke¡Çs house, he puts the thing on the turntable and takes a few seconds to assess its appeal. The verdict shows up in his shimmying shoulders before you see it on his face. He segues into a terpsichorean groove that¡Çs somewhere between Walt Disney¡Çs 1920s dancing cartoon skeletons and a 1960s American Bandstand frug contest. Davidson¡Çs Zeke is one of those inexplicably winning losers with coolness in his bones. He just doesn¡Çt know how to make it work in the real world. Get The Brief.
