Vhyes 2019. 2020, NR, 72 min. Directed by Jack Henry Robbins. Starring Mason McNulty, Rahm Braslaw, Lindsley Allen, Kerri Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Mark Proksch, Courtney Pauroso, Charlyne Yi, John Gemberling, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon. REVIEWED By Marc Savlov, Fri., Jan. 17, 2020 You never forget your first time. Holding a VHS camcorder, I mean. Although I never owned one of those bulky Sony S-VHS monsters with that oversized red record button so proto-reminiscent of Ren and Stimpy s infamous candy-colored “history eraser button, ” I absolutely recall my first Hi8 and, long prior to that, my dads old Kodak Super-8mm film camera which once discovered was immediately deployed to stop-motion animate my own Jurassically clumsy tributes to my favorite filmmaker of my youth, the late, great Ray Harryhausen. (I mourn the fact that my 30-second epics of Brontosaur on T. Rex action, complete with crimson gore provided by the 1970s kidhood modeling clay of choice, Caran dAche, were forever lost somewhere on the way to adulthood. ) Director Robbins enticingly unique VHYes is many things: a Dada-esque assemblage of mid-Eighties era pop culture, a series of often laugh-out-loud bizarro blackout sketches modeled mostly on the television fare of the time, a moderately melancholy love letter to the unexpectedly giddy power of home VHS recorders when placed in the hands of a 12-year-old, and a thoughtful riff on the addictive nature of the ever-voyeuristic camera eye. Mostly though, its about the meandering adventures of Ralph (McNulty) who receives the camera as a Christmas gift from his father (an unrecognizable Tim Robbins, the Jack Henry's father) and mother (Allen. Along with his best friend Josh (Braslaw) Ralph takes to taping snippets of everything on 1987 television, from late-night soft-core Skinemax parodies, to a Bob Ross-inspired "The Joy of Painting” with Joan (Kenney in wonderfully full-on disturbathon mode) and an Antiques Roadshow doppelgänger featuring What We Do in the Shadows energy vampire Proksch. In between theres cut-and-paste scenes of the two besties blowing up cherry bombs, investigating the local haunted house, and just generally behaving like any free range 12-year-old given a license to film. The beauty of VHYes is that Robbins made the genius aesthetic decision to film the entire thing using actual VHS and Betamax cameras. Given Ralphs pre-teen attention span, few of the television and commercial parodies overstay their welcome. Theres an inspired talk show bit that mirrors the sequence in David Cronenbergs Videodrome in which Deborah Harry, James Woods, and “Brian OBlivion” discuss the ominous future of the rapidly changing televisual landscape. Also scattered throughout Ralphs tape ? which portentously just happens to be his parents' wedding ceremony VHS he snagged on accident ? are random moments of his mom and dad and the seemingly downwardly spiraling state of their marriage. This overlays something of a shadow over VHYes otherwise chaotic and scattershot in-camera anti-editing. Kudos to child actors McNulty and Braslaw, who give pitch perfect performances as birds of a feather exploring a sometimes hilarious albeit potentially grave new world via the magic of VHS. To quote Videodrome s aforementioned telepresence OBlivion, “The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena … Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Television is reality, and reality is less than television. ” And that is, by the end of the 72-minute-long VHYes gleefully immersive, intermittently profound “found footage, ” a lesson Ralph osmotically absorbs through the VHS viewfinder of his life. January 30, 2020 Uneven retro comedy has lots of sex, drug humor. January 27, 2020 A skit-filled 'Kentucky Fried Movie' like takedown of kitsch 1980s media culture develops into a far more prescient and surprisingly moving satire. January 23, 2020 The amusing but initially disposable sketch format gathers momentum and a series of mini-threads emerge. January 21, 2020 VHYES is one of the most unique films I've seen in quite some time and it's a film I could watch over and over again. January 20, 2020 VHYES is a look back at a specific and odd time where UHF was a wasteland and people were just beginning to have an interceding presence between them and experiencing the moment, full of pinpoint period accuracy and lots of perfectly bizarre bits [VHYes] in all its throwback glory frustrates and amazes in equal measures as a genre mind-bender - connecting unrelated events into a mixed-bag of goodies. January 20, 2020... keep waiting for that moment where we can start to laugh along with the filmmakers. Sadly, it never comes. It's not grade A comedy, but I respected it for being so flat out bizarre. January 18, 2020 Nostalgia mixes with absurdity here, and somehow, it works. In particular, the way Robbins throws in some commentary and satire elevates things. Weird experimental film, that's not for everyone. This is a movie that is really just a stream of consciousness, experimental, Robot Chicken-style collage. January 17, 2020 VHYes is not for mainstream tastes, there really are no production values to speak of, but the aesthetic is sublime. Those of a certain age will find this retro comedy hits a certain nostalgic sweet spot, even if its fragmented nature becomes frustrating. Weird and creepy and funny and an exceptional social commentary on our society. In keeping with its punning title, this is ultimately a very positive film about our transitory relationship to time. It helps that it is also a hilarious hoot and a half, and full of generous, endearing charm. VHYes breaks the biggest rule of parody, over and over again: it simply tries way too hard with material that's far too easy. This is pretty thin stuff, written with medium-watt inspiration at best and acted by performers variably able to make it seem better than it is. January 16, 2020 [T]he real problem with VHYes may be that its two modes don't work well together. Robbins has a niche audience he's looking to appeal to, and he succeeds in recreating the strange planet of the late '80s with cheek, intelligence, and heart. Page 1 of 2.

If youve seen films like the WNUF Halloween Special and are obsessed with making your own videos, youre gonna have a good time with this one. The beginning of this movie gave me Memory Hole vibes and then I started to see the pattern of a narrative begin to show. VHYes is basically a tape that you find hidden away somewhere, covered with dust and filled from start to finish with recorded randomness. Its a wedding tape that a kid got ahold of and put everything he could on it, but then it turns into something wild. The film goes from antiquated and nostalgic to dark and surreal over the course of its very brisk 72-minute running time. In VHYes we never really see the characters outside the lens of the camcorder until the end when things break out of their reality. The structure here is just like any experimental videotape from the days of recording everything possible in life and off the tv. The main character Ralph is a kid with a video camera and everything he can do he does. He records himself and his parents and best friend, and once he figures out how to hook it up to the television its game on. What we then get is a clipshow of his antics and moment after moment of everything from commercials and shows to crime documentaries and censored cable tv porn. Its quite the video mixtape indeed. I kind of love the way this film goes in the direction of the WNUF Halloween Special and Ghostwatch. It makes me think of the endless amount of VHS tapes that users have uploaded to video and gets me remembering when I used to record stuff off of tv too. I never did take the family camcorder to the towns most infamous haunted house though, but now Im kinda wishing I had. Once this movie crosses that bridge, thats when things begin to get interesting and very surreal. Like in an Adult Swim and Too Many Cooks kind of way. That kind of surreal. Check VHYes out. Its fun and fast-paced and full of laughs and dumb jokes. The pedigree of comedy here is great with some of my favorites like Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney pulling sharp jokes and satire, and seeing them like this made me think of the days when I used to watch them in The State when I was recording shows off MTV. Im glad Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins (seeing him in the end credits just makes me want to watch Tapeheads again) decided to make this. Director Jack Henry Robbins does a fantastic job here crafting and weaving together each segment into a cohesive trip with a solid and special payoff. VHYes is worth the admission. Its good times. Vhyes youtube. Vhes website. Vhyes jack henry robbins. Nick Allen January 17, 2020 A sense of humor is a funny thing, especially for those of us who treasure the weird stuff. When something that's "out there" works, its true love. When it doesnt, its like a bad date that had huge promise until it got underway. Jack Henry Robbins'?“VHYes, ” with all of its nostalgia for late ‘80s TV and its endemic cheesiness, follows after the likes of Weird Al Yankovic's masterpiece " UHF, Casper Kelly's endlessly loopable opening credits hellscape "Too Many Cooks, and even the Kyle Mooney skits that are "cut for time" on "Saturday Night Live. And while I adore all of those polarizing works, I didn't see what was funny about the shallow wackiness of "VHYes. " Advertisement Shot entirely on VHS and Betamax, the whole of "VHYes" is presented as the contents of a video tape, which was initially used to film the wedding for the parents of a young boy named Ralph ( Mason McNulty. When Ralph gets a camera for Christmas in 1987, and learns that he can record from the TV, it opens a world of possibilities. Namely, whatever he can find on the TV that is weird to him at the time. In one of its many abrupt, fuzzy cuts, an excited young Ralph jumps on his bed and?says that he wants to create the ultimate video playlist, and soon into watching “VHYes” you accept that thats all youre going to get.? Instead of feeling like the chaos of a found tape, “VHYes” assembles itself like a series of?sketches that it can bounce between, with random peeks back at the original wedding video contents; it struggles to have a heart?by intermittently making it a story about Ralph realizing the truth behind his parents' marriage. Some sketch set-ups are directly, lazily recognizable to TV history: one cop parody steals the red and blue text from “Law and Order” because you wouldnt get that its meant to parody if it didnt have that logo. As if a tell on its weak absurdity, VHYes" has yet another parody on TV painting instructor?Bob Ross (even after Deadpool did it) with a segment starring Kerri Kenney, who?turns the zen of such a host into the mindset of a creepy person who believes in aliens.? The very nostalgia within the concept becomes a pit, even when “VHYes” threatens to get truly weird. Its not until the final minutes that the movie taps into the reality-bending that had been hinted at earlier, when Ralph started to see himself in the stuff he was watching, after one segment involved a VHS expert talking about the soul-suck that will be handheld recording in the future. Many parody sketches dont have a discernible reference to build on (the recognition is what makes it initially funny) and instead rely on a shallow cheesiness. Even though "VHYes" features many dynamic funny people like Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Mark Prosch, Charlyne?Yi, and Robbins' parents ( Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon) many of?the characters in these sketches are so broad they aren't particularly clever. “VHYes” breaks the biggest rule of parody, over and over again: it simply tries way too hard with material thats far too easy. Thats the case with an adult film bit that goes for low-hanging fruit of bad acting, as one guy is poorly reading cue cards in a late night movie about three alien women. Or there's an ongoing true-crime show about how a sorority thought one of their sisters was a witch because she did magic, which is a funny premise given a flat?execution. The commercials that are thrown in the mix, like about a violent security company, or pads to sound-proof your bathroom, are like random splatters of paint whose only intention is to fulfill the project's obvious?self-amusement.? While “VHYes” is very much inspired by the?media experience of?1987, its actually about a very modern hell: Your friend sits you down to show you something really funny on YouTube, but oh, no?theyve misjudged your sense of humor. Now youre stuck, watching all of it,?trying to find something funny to offer a polite relief. I started to feel trapped by my obligation to watch something that could very well have been my type, but now Im just grateful the filmmakers of “VHYes” didnt watch me watch it in laughless silence. MOVIES 5:38 PM PST 1/15/2020 by Nate Gold/Oscilloscope Laboratories A hipster-retro 'Kentucky Fried Movie' with a phantasmagoric twist. 1/17/2020 Jack Henry Robbins, son of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, looks at the world through a short-attention-span montage of faux '80s television clips. Is it just an Eighties-drunk exercise in pastiche, or perhaps an experiment in slow-burn psychological horror for the Adult Swim crowd? Could it even be a disguised indictment of a generation that sat watching infomercials and dopey porn while its democracy passed the point of no return? Jack Henry Robbins' VHYes is a bit of all that, poured into a form that begs for midnight-movie consumption. The son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Robbins briefly enlists both parents onscreen here, while relying more heavily on a small array of comic performers familiar from TV. Though hardly groundbreaking in either its content or its aesthetics, the film is more serious than it initially lets on, and can only benefit from the VHS nostalgia that has, often irrationally, taken root in some quarters. Shot entirely on VHS and Betamax, the pic's conceit is that it is the result of a Christmas gift whose recipient should have been more careful: When pre-teen Ralph (Mason McNulty) starts experimenting with his family's new video camera in December 1987, he unwittingly uses the tape of his parents' wedding as he runs around filming everything from fights between his dinosaur toys to his attempts to shoot off fireworks with best pal Josh (Rahm Braslaw. (Those who've actually used a camcorder may wonder how he managed to leave big swaths of wedding footage intact while recording stuff before and after; the not terribly-offensive cheat is necessary to support a theme the film will eventually get around to. ) Very quickly, Ralph realizes he can use a cable to record what's on TV; he plugs in and records a spree of channel-surfing that is hardly dictated by the merits of whatever happens to be onscreen. The clunky programs we witness sprinkle familiar faces among actors who look like they were plucked from the actual period. Thomas Lennon plays the co-host of a TV shopping network, currently hawking a Confederate Army memorial pen; the inimitably nerdy Mark Proksch plays an expert on an Antiques Roadshow -like program who explains the suspiciously bizarre origins of ordinary-looking artifacts. We see aerobics classes, nightly news and cop shows. We sit in on a Bob Ross-style painting tutorial that gets less Bob Ross-like with each passing minute. Its host Joan (Kerri Kenney) doesn't only host Painting With Joan, but stranger programs, like the unsettling Sleeping With Joan, which is pretty much the opposite of the gently wholesome Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep. While Joan and others give things an air of drug-addled discomfort, some program snippets contain hints of a more clear-eyed world view. The perfunctory scripts of porn films we see are built not around hunky cable-repair guys or pizza-delivery dudes, but scientists researching global warming, or blonde lesbian aliens who are forced to navigate American attitudes toward illegal immigration. Stranger and more on-target is a current-events talk show whose guest starts expounding on "Tape Narcissism" a phenomenon of indiscriminate self-documentation she feels will lead its victims to psychosis. To the show's host, her predictions sound so hyperbolic as to be insane; to us, she's describing the age of social media. So it goes, with occasional clips in which Ralph documents bits of domestic discomfort he doesn't quite understand. Viewers who stick with the ADHD skit-like material will be divided about whether this familial theme ties things together satisfactorily ??and about whether sticking to a single target, a la Between Two Ferns, makes more sense for those who would mine clunky idioms for laugh. For those on the fence, a detour into found-footage horror will only complicate the question. Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the byzantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, hes just a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left the fuck alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculous saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wifes death in peace ? then some Russian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute. This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangerous that he used to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers hed once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they havent lost the scent or minded their own business. At the end of “VHYes, ” our laconic hero committed a big no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what its like when the world gets a bit too close for comfort. Giddy, exhausting, and breathtakingly violent, “VHYes” begins a few seconds after the previous installment left off, with the excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart hes been given to hide before the 14 million bounty on his head is triggered and the entire criminal underworld comes after him. Of course, anyone whos seen the previous films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? ?? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? ?? is a heat-packing hired gun who uses their role in the capitalist system as a disguise for their deeper allegiance to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood oaths. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all of those crosshairs, its become comically impossible for the deathless widower to find the solace he seeks. Hes a target, and it seems like the entire world has its finger on the trigger; he used to be anonymous, but now hes a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parabellum” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famous. Less artful but more concussive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick being clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and so desperate for someone who will treat him like an actual human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth he can hide in plain sight, and the perks of his job dont seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles through the wet neon streets of Times Square ? returning us to a surprisingly involved film world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? ?? its hard not to think of Reeves recent experience on a malfunctioning airplane, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a viral moment (to the actors mild chagrin. Reeves once said that Wick was 40% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “VHYes” starts in media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For an 131-minute film that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who isnt up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parabellum, ” hes basically the leading cause of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”) Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie. Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building) “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesnt live up to Stahelskis creative potential, even if its amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? ?? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect ? is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old stars remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywoods stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. To that end, its telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, theres mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “VHYes” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type whos a bit too greedy for his own good (its hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but hes most definitely doing it. When the bullets fly, Sofias very VHYes lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wicks past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that youre willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th streets United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater, ” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake. ” Stream Free Movies & TV Show The films world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelskis frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wicks bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and youll have the right idea. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld thats sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they dont shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 wont matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesnt matter if youre a Hollywood star or a 14 million bounty ? fame can be a difficult thing to shake. Its a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it.
