Here in LA we got to see Sam Mendes’ WWI film 1917. (It won’t have a wide release until January 10th next year. ) And I wanted to give a few, non-spoilery thoughts: Mendes gimmick for a “one-shot” film with Roger Deakins cinematography is a success (duh). Although the cuts are pretty obvious in my opinion. Incredibly tense and Mendes/Cairns do a good job not giving us the most predictable situations for our main characters. Having said that: Character motivations and overall plot is pretty generic. I’ve never heard of George MacKay before but he really shines in this film. Judging from his IMDB I’m betting this is the start of bigger things for him. Germans are too one-note for me in this. I know that sounds strange cause they are the “bad guys” historically for WWI. But if there is one war where both sides worth of foot soldiers are all in gray areas it’s this war. So a little more humanity would’ve been nice. Overall: A really solid movie that will DEFINITELY get deserved Oscar buzz next year. Mostly for the technical side of things (time for Deakins’ 100th nomination boys and girls) honestly. I’ve seen better plots in war films but this will still hold your interest. It definitely did with my sold out crowd which was a mixture of younger people like myself (30 years) to the seniors.

Truly stunning visually, the story of two soldiers' race to the front lines of WWI under direct orders to deliver the message to stop 1,600 British soldiers from entering a trap set-up by German forces to massacre them, keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, and inside the soldiers' boots, through amazing Mendes/Deakins directing/cinematography techniques. This is film art in its highest form, and is at once incredibly beautiful and horrific. A runaway certain Oscar winner for Cinematography (Deakins) and nominations (at a minimum) for Best Film, Director, Visual Effects, Screenplay (Mendes) Film Editing (Lee Smith) and Actor (George MacKay.
1917 night window scene. Engrossing film from the start. The cinematography, the production, the sound editing were great. Acting was credible. A few spots make me take one point off. It has been long since the Oscars lost relevance as a genuine event, nowadays is filled with political slogans and propaganda and blablabla. To finally see movies that go against the status quo in terms of political speech is something I would have never imagined, even more so when you consider the fact that those movies aren't even trying to elicit a political narrative, and yet they defy the status quo completely. You guys have no idea how much I enjoyed watching npcs having brain bursts all over social media.
