Run Silent, Run Deep Theatrical release poster by Reynold Brown Directed by Robert Wise Produced by Harold Hecht Screenplay by John Gay Based on Run Silent, Run Deep 1955 novel by Edward L. Beach, Jr. Starring Clark Gable Burt Lancaster Jack Warden Don Rickles Music by Franz Waxman Cinematography Russell Harlan Edited by George Boemler Production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster Productions Distributed by United Artists Release date March?27,?1958 (US) Running time 93 minutes Country United States Language English Run Silent, Run Deep is a 1958 American black-and-white war film from United Artists. It was produced by Harold Hecht, directed by Robert Wise, and starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Commander (later Captain) Edward L. Beach Jr... The title refers to " silent running. a submarine stealth tactic. The story describes World War II submarine warfare in the Pacific Ocean, and deals with themes of vengeance, endurance, courage, loyalty, and honor and how these can be tested during wartime. In addition to Gable and Lancaster playing the leads, the film also features Jack Warden, as well as the film debut of Don Rickles. [1] United Artists promoted Run Silent, Run Deep as a combination of the obsessiveness of Moby Dick ' s Captain Ahab and the shipboard rivalry found in Mutiny on the Bounty. [2] Capt. Beach, the author of the book, did not think highly of the film. He later said that the film company bought only the book title and was not interested in producing an accurate depiction of the theme and plot of his novel. [3] Plot [ edit] A World War II US Navy submarine officer, Commander P. J. Richardson ( Clark Gable) is determined to get revenge on an ace Japanese destroyer captain, nicknamed "Bungo Pete" who has sunk four US submarines in the Bungo Straits, including his previous command. He persuades the Navy Board to give him a new submarine command with the provision that his executive officer be someone who has just returned from active sea patrol. He single-mindedly trains the crew of his new boat, the USS Nerka, to return to the Bungo Straits and sink Bungo Pete, in spite of the Navy's expressly forbidding him from approaching the Bungo Straits on this mission. Richardson's executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Jim Bledsoe ( Burt Lancaster) is worried about the safety of his boat and his crew. He also resents Richardson and the Navy leadership for denying him command of the Nerka, which he believes should have been his. Richardson begins to rigorously drill the crew on a rapid bow shot: firing at the bow of an approaching ship, considered an act of desperation due to a vessel's extremely narrow profile. He then bypasses one target, only to take on a Japanese destroyer with a bow shot. The crew is outraged as it discovers that Richardson is avoiding legitimate targets in order to enter the Bungo Straits undetected in direct violation of his mission orders. Finally, they come upon a large convoy. Soon after blowing up a cargo ship and then engaging Bungo Pete, they are attacked by aircraft that had been alerted to their presence and were waiting in ambush. They are forced to dive and barely survive depth charges. Three of the crew are killed, and Richardson suffers an incapacitating concussion. The submarine also narrowly dodges what the crew mistakenly believes is one of their own torpedoes doubling back on them. By sending up blankets, equipment, and the bodies of the dead, they convince the Japanese that the submarine has been sunk. Bledsoe uses Richardson's injury to assume command and set course for Pearl Harbor. While listening to Tokyo Rose proclaiming the sinking of their boat, several crewmen are mystified about how the Japanese are able to identify several of them by name. Bledsoe realizes that the Japanese have analyzed their floating trash, so he decides to turn that to his advantage. Since the Japanese believe the Nerka has been sunk, he returns to the Bungo Straits to fight the destroyer Akikaze, which the submarine sinks, only to be attacked again by a mystery torpedo. Richardson deduces that the Akikaze was not working alone to sink US submarines; a Japanese submarine was working in concert with it. He orders the boat into a dive just seconds before a Japanese torpedo races by. The Nerka forces its adversary to surface and destroys it. Richardson then collapses on the bridge, dies, and is buried at sea. Adaptation from the novel [ edit] The film draws many plot elements from the novel, including Japanese gathering intelligence from the submarine's trash. One key difference is that the novel places Richardson ashore recovering from a battle injury and working on the torpedo exploder problem when Bledsoe takes out Richardson's boat and dies in its sinking of the USS Walrus. In the novel the conflict between Richardson and Bledsoe begins at the start of the war while they are reconditioning the old USS? S-16 ? (SS-121) in the Naval Submarine Base New London and Richardson is compelled to disqualify Bledsoe for command of his own sub. The mutinous attitudes of the crew are an extension of Bledsoe's earlier rebelliousness, while the film provides them with no comparable context other than their loyalty to and respect for Bledsoe. A sympathetic and loyal major character of the novel, Ensign Keith Leone, is replaced by an unsympathetic and disloyal one who did not appear in the novel, Cartwright, to advance the conflict. At Gable's insistence, the film has Richardson taken seriously ill before being relieved of command so Gable would not be perceived as playing a less than dominant character. [2] In the film, the submarine does not ram Japanese lifeboats to ensure that Bungo Pete is killed. The US Navy, which helped with the film's production, may have been concerned with reviving memories of a 1943 incident in which Dudley W. Morton fired on Japanese shipwreck survivors while commanding USS? Wahoo ? (SS-238. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] The USS Redfish was used in many of the exterior scenes. Rear Admiral Rob Roy McGregor, who had commanded two fleet boats ( Grouper and Sea Cat) during World War II, acted as the technical advisor. [4] Nick Cravat, who starred with Lancaster in nine films, had a speaking part. This was rare for him, because his thick Brooklyn accent did not fit the historical dramas in which he often appeared. [5] Don Rickles made his film debut in a small role, and in his 2007 memoirs he recalled that during filming Gable would sometimes frustrate the filmmakers (including Lancaster, who was a financial investor in the film) by adhering to a strict 9-to-5 approach to the workday?he would reportedly stop working during the filming of major scenes. Later in his life, Lancaster publicly had nothing but praise and admiration for Gable, whom he described as a consummate professional. citation needed] The film contains several accurate depictions of torpedo attacks being arranged with periscope sightings, range and bearing calculations, and use of a Torpedo Data Computer to achieve a shooting solution. On the surface, the Captain uses a Target Bearing Transmitter mounted on the bridge to acquire a target visually and mark its bearing input for the shooting party inside the conning tower. This depicted the preferred tactic of night surface attack, taking advantage of both the submarine's greater speed and maneuverability using its diesel engines, and the use of its SJ radar in making accurate range and bearing calculations, although with greater risk of being sunk by bombs and shell fire. The director, Robert Wise, had real submariners working with the cast until they could realistically depict the complexities of these torpedo attacks. Submarine veterans of World War II who viewed the film remarked on the accuracy of these scenes, and the scenes now provide modern-day audiences with a view of what life was like aboard World War II submarines. [6] The special effects were completed by using miniatures, considered to be state-of-the-art in 1957, when the film was made. Reception [ edit] Bosley Crowther, writing in The New York Times, called Run Silent, Run Deep "a straight tale of undersea adventure, all-male and all-submarine. that] has the hard, cold ring of truth" with "dangerous adventures [that] are severely, nail-bitingly tense" until "the ultimate showdown. that keeps one forward on the chair. To the extent that the events depicted might appear hard to believe, he cited the credentials of the novel's author and noted that "they look more like the real thing in good old black-and-white. 7] One critic later summarized the plot after it had been replicated in other submarine films: T]he Executive Officer hates the Skipper and smolders valiantly in that compressed environment with the tacit complicity of the crew until the Old Man just plain old blows his stack and then we have a shouting match and, as is the way with guys, things get better and we outwit the [you supply it] lurking there beyond in the somber depths to sail home at last. 8] References [ edit] Erickson, Hal. When Manni, a local criminal's errand boy, loses twenty thousand Marks, he has twenty minutes to find the money or face retaliation. Not the brightest bulb, Manni turns to the quick-witted, resourceful Lola to devise a plan to save his hide. And so she does, and off she sprints, running for Manni's life, for her love, and to find money somewhere, somehow. Dangling three "what if" variations on Lola's mission to save her mate, Run Lola Run propels us toward each outcome with a delicious peppering of surprises, quirks, and twists. Gable plays submarine commander "Rich" Richardson, who assumes command of the USS Nerka. Because his previous sub was sunk by the Japanese under highly suspect circumstances, Richardson inspires nothing but animosity from his new crew. Particularly hostile is executive officer Lt. Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster) who'd assumed that he was next in line to command the Nerka. Obsessed with tracking down the Japanese destroyer that sank his old sub, Richardson drives his crew mercilessly, and even disobeys direct orders from his own higher-ups. The Nerka manages to blast the Japanese vessel out of the waters, but in so doing the sub is placed in dire peril in enemy waters. In his desperate efforts to save the Nerka, Richardson at long last wins the respect of Bledsoe and the rest of the crew. Movie run 3. Run for the Sun Theatrical poster Directed by Roy Boulting Produced by Robert Waterfield Harry Tatelman Written by Dudley Nichols Roy Boulting Based on " The Most Dangerous Game " by Richard Connell Starring Richard Widmark Trevor Howard Jane Greer Peter van Eyck Music by Fred Steiner Cinematography Joseph La Shelle Edited by Frederic Knudtson Production company Russ-Field Corporation Distributed by United Artists Release date July?30,?1956 (United States) Running time 99 minutes Country United States Language English Box office 1. 25 million (US) 1] Run for the Sun is a 1956 Technicolor thriller adventure film released by United Artists, the third film to officially be based on Richard Connell 's classic suspense story. The Most Dangerous Game. after both RKO 's The Most Dangerous Game (1932) and their remake, A Game of Death (1945. 2] This version stars Richard Widmark, Trevor Howard, and Jane Greer, and was directed by Ray Boulting from a script written by Boulting and Dudley Nichols. [3] Connell was credited for his short story. [4] In this loose adaptation, the expatriate Russian general of the original story is transformed into a British traitor hiding in the Mexican jungle with a fellow Nazi war criminal played by Peter van Eyck. Their prey are Widmark, portraying a Hemingway -like but reclusive novelist, and Greer, playing a magazine journalist who has tracked down the novelist's whereabouts. In this version, the Nazis are hunting them not for sport, but to prevent them revealing their whereabouts. Plot [ edit] Katie Connors ( Jane Greer) on the editorial staff of Sight magazine, journeys to San Marcos, a remote Mexican fishing village, seeking novelist and adventurer Mike Latimer ( Richard Widmark) who has abandoned writing "at the peak of his fame" and dropped from sight. She soon learns that he is indeed there, indulging in drinking, fishing, hunting, and flying his aircraft. Katie contrives to meet him, pretending not to know his identity, but Latimer easily sees through her clumsy denials and is immediately attracted to her. Over the next several days they enjoy each other's company, but Katie may be falling in love with him and conceals the real reason she is there. After Latimer explains that his wife was the muse behind his literary success, and that he quit writing because she left him to be with his best friend, Katie decides to go back to New York. Latimer offers to fly her to Mexico City and asks Katie to write down her address to keep in touch. During the flight, the magnetized notebook in Katie's purse affects the aircraft's magnetic compass and they find themselves lost over jungle. The aircraft runs out of fuel and Latimer crash-lands in a small clearing. Knocked unconscious, he wakes up to find himself in a bed in the main house of a hacienda. Katie introduces him to their rescuers, an Englishman named Browne ( Trevor Howard) and the Dutch archaeologist Dr. van Anders ( Peter van Eyck) who live on the estate with Jan (Carlos Henning) a third European. Latimer feels that he once met the cordial Browne, a big game hunter himself, but cannot place it. The more suspicious and secretive Anders asks about a rifle bullet that Latimer always carries with him, which Latimer relates is a souvenir and good luck charm from the D-Day invasion, a time when his courage failed him. Almost immediately the couple senses that things are not as they appear. Browne keeps a pack of savage dogs to prowl the estate and control the local populace; when Latimer goes to examine the condition of his aircraft, it has disappeared; Browne claims he has no contact to the outside world and Katie doubts that Anders is really an archaeologist. However friction develops between them when a newscast on the radio announcing their disappearance reveals Katie's identity and original purpose. Katie tries to persuade Latimer that she no longer intends to write the story but he rebuffs her. That night, Latimer finds a storeroom containing military gear with Nazi markings, items from his missing aircraft supposedly stolen by the local Indians, and a cabinet of hunting rifles. The barking of the prowling dogs awakens Browne and Anders, and Latimer overhears them talking in German. He tells Katie what he found and warns her that they need to work together to try to escape. They discover that Browne has been concealing from them, his own "flyable" aircraft. Latimer finally realizes it is Browne's voice he recognizes, and that he is an infamous turncoat who during the war broadcast Nazi propaganda from Berlin to Britain after he had married a German girl. The Englishman admits the truth and adds that his wife was Anders' sister, killed in a British air raid. Latimer tries to bargain for Katie's release but to no avail. Latimer realizes Anders is a German war criminal who massacred an entire village and intends to kill them. He and Katie try to steal the aircraft, but when Jan shoots at them, they flee into the jungle. Browne, leading Anders, Jan and the dogs, follows their trail, failing to catch them the first day when a group of wild pigs attack the dogs. The next day, the wilderness-wise Latimer rigs a crude booby trap that kills Jan. With Katie nearing exhaustion, Latimer contrives to double back, and when Browne and Anders find Jan's dead body, they realize that the aircraft has been left unguarded. Stopping for the night, Latimer starts to cover Katie with his jacket and finds that she wrote down the office address of Sight magazine as her own, proving that she had been truthful about her feelings. They reach the hacienda just ahead of their pursuers and barricade themselves in the chapel. Anders pretends to negotiate with Latimer and shoots through the door. Latimer ridicules him and when Anders goes to bring workers to break down the door, he is forced to lock up the dogs to get their cooperation. Browne fears the fanatical Nazi and offers to shoot Anders if Latimer flies him to South America. Latimer refuses and uses the bullet hole in the door as a makeshift gun barrel for his lucky bullet, striking the primer with a chisel and fatally shooting Browne. Latimer and Katie take off in Browne's aircraft, killing Anders with the propeller when he tries to block their path. They manage to safely escape. Cast [ edit] Richard Widmark as Michael Latimer Trevor Howard as Browne Jane Greer as Katie Connors Peter van Eyck as Dr. Van Anders / Colonel Von Andre Juan García as Fernandez José Antonio Carbajal as Paco José Chávez as Pedro (as José Chávez Trowe) Guillermo Calles as Paco Margarito Luna as Gran-Hotel Proprietor Guillermo Bravo Sosa as Gran-Hotel Waiter Enedina Díaz de León as Paco's Wife Carlos Henning as Jan Production [ edit] Run for the Sun was one of four films produced for United Artists release by a company owned by actress Jane Russell and her then husband, Former NFL star Bob Waterfield. Originally Russell and Robert Mitchum were announced as stars. [5] Then Eva Marie Saint was going to play the female lead. [6] Robert Wilder wrote the original script for Run for the Sun and Dudley Nichols was brought in to work on it. Roy Boulting was signed to direct Run for the Sun in August 1955. The original stars were to be Richard Widmark and Leo Genn. [7] Jane Greer later joined the cast. [8] Genn was meant to play the head villain in Run for the Sun, and he had script approval at a rate of 3, 500 a week plus expenses. The script was rewritten and Genn did not like the result when he arrived in Mexico to start filming. He pulled out; Trevor Howard was cast instead. Genn later sued Waterfield who had to pay Genn his complete salary. [9] The jungle sequences in Run for the Sun were shot about 50 miles from Acapulco, Mexico. The location used for Browne and Van Anders' base was a vast, ruined, 16th century hacienda and sugar plantation/refinery built by Hernán Cortés at Atlacomulco, southeast of Cuernavaca. In the 1980s, the principal house and several other buildings were restored and turned into a hotel. The interior and patio of the house used in the film, as well as the interior of the small hotel where Katie Connors and Mike Latimer meet, were sets built at Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City. The house interior was reputed to be the largest set yet built in a Mexican studio. [N 1] Reception [ edit] Film reviewer Leslie Halliwell in Leslie Halliwell's Film Guide (1989) noted that Run for the Sun was a. tame remake of 'The Most Dangerous Game' with Count Zaroff replaced by Lord Haw-Haw; sluggish plot development mars the action. 11] Film reviewer Adrian Turner in the Time Out Film Guide (2004) said that Run for the Sun. never really gets to grip with the grotesquerie of the original story, though Howard as a dead ringer for Lord Haw-Haw, is excellent. 12] References [ edit] Notes [ edit] In the film, the supporting villain is a German "von Andre" who passes as a Dutchman "Van Anders. In actuality, the actor playing him, Peter van Eyck - a Dutch name - was born Götz von Eick and changed his name when becoming an actor. [10] Citations [ edit] "The Top Box-Office Hits of 1956. Movie running with the devil. Critics Consensus More fun than a barrel of Jean-Paul Sartre, pic's energy riffs on an engaging love story and really human performances while offering a series of what-ifs and a blood-stirring soundtrack. 93% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 82 90% Audience Score User Ratings: 144, 118 Run Lola Run Ratings & Reviews Explanation Run Lola Run Photos Movie Info Presenting his third feature after last year's acclaimed Wintersleepers, Tom Tykwer cranks up the volume, stiffens the pace, and jettisons us on one of this year's most exhilarating cinematic adventures. A breathtaking race against the clock, Run Lola Run straps Tykwers' playfully hip sensibilities to a fun-filled mix of romance, thrills, and action as his tireless heroine pounds the pavement and racks her brain to save her lover from danger. Manni and Lola are twenty-something Berliners, way past cool and desperately in love. A sure-fire hit with audiences, Run Lola Run brings to the screen two actors of immeasurable charisma: Franka Potente as the heroic, flame-haired Lola, and Moritz Bleibtreu as her doltish but devoted lover. Scoring his delirious staccato mix of animation, still photographs, and live action to a pounding techno beat, Tykwer reveals himself a virtuoso of the medium and, at the same time, a passionate believer in destiny and the transcendent power of love.
