Black christmas tree. I found it bland, unimaginative if you want Xmas horror watch the 1974 version. I had no positive expectations as the trailer already pretty much told you the story. T here’s a curious dichotomy within slasher movies, a subgenre that both punishes and rewards its female characters. While many of the women are being slaughtered, in variously graphic ways, a storied tradition of “final girls” are being empowered, surviving and ultimately triumphing over masked killers. At times, there has even been room for knife-edge commentary on the extreme dangers of misogyny and slut-shaming, most memorably in the crowd-pleasing finale of Scream where two women bring down a pair of murderous incels. But there remains an understandably conflicted relationship between gender and slashers which makes the arrival of one aiming to do something with this seem like an enticing proposition. The behemoth-like production company that is Blumhouse, behind hits such as Get Out, The Purge, Happy Death Day, Split and last year’s Halloween revival, has come under fire for its lack of female directors, a fact made even worse by head honcho Jason Blum’s ill-advised comments last year. “There are not a lot of female directors, period, and even less who are inclined to do horror, ” he said before swiftly being reminded that yes, women do like horror films too. Soon after, he hired rising indie actor-director Sophia Takal for an instalment in his Hulu-based horror series Into the Dark called New Year, New You, an intriguing, often insightful, attempt to satirise the dark side of self-care. She has been brought back for a revamp of Black Christmas, an often underappreciated slasher from 1974, preceding Halloween by four years, a film thought of by many horror fans as the first true example of the formula. Announced in June, with production starting later that month, and now out just under six months later, there’s an inescapable, palpable sense of hurry throughout the 2019 iteration. It’s quick, cheap-looking and entirely devoid of suspense, atmosphere and dramatic tension, so inept at times that it makes 2006’s questionable remake suddenly seem like a misremembered masterwork. What’s most surprising, and initially intriguing, about round three is that it’s ultimately less of a horror film and more of a thinkpiece, a hodgepodge of buzzwords and ideas, aiming high but crashing into the snow. There’s the kernel of a good idea in a script co-written by Takal and former film critic April Wolfe, which attempts to place the loose setup of sorority sisters at risk in a believably contemporary campus setting. Our final girl is Riley (Imogen Poots), a withdrawn sophomore struggling with the fallout from a horrifying sexual assault inflicted by an ex-student belonging to an aggressive fraternity. In the last few days of the fall semester, tensions rise at the college with a petition to dethrone a classics professor (Cary Elwes) for his curriculum, which doesn’t include enough diversity, and a prank played by Riley and her sisters aimed at calling out toxic masculinity among their male peers. There’s also the small problem of a masked, hooded killer. Repeating its mission statement ad nauseam via dry, box-ticking dialogue, Black Christmas wants you to know what it’s doing and how clever it is for doing it. But using terms like “white supremacist patriarchy” in every other line of dialogue isn’t enough by itself and the film fails to support its superficially progressive thesis with a smart enough plot, trucking ahead with speed but without ingenuity. The PG-13 death scenes are rushed and ineffective, the characters are anonymous and interchangeable and as the film takes a supernatural turn, it becomes clear that Wolfe and Takal seem to think they’re making the new Get Out but for women. But while Jordan Peele’s devious game-changer was able to neatly inject racial politics into an increasingly fantastical horror film, the creaks here are deafening. Lucy Currey in Black Christmas. Photograph: Universal Pictures It’s an unwieldy and messy thing, drearily directed and boringly written, taking its agenda seriously yet not providing a robust enough framework to surround it. It’s a film that urges us to believe women yet shows female characters not believing the legitimate concerns of their female friend. It reminds us of the importance of queer and trans voices yet includes an entirely straight cast of characters. The odious sexual violence of straight frat culture is a perfect jumping-off point for any horror film, especially given how one notable example of it is currently serving on the supreme court. But as Wolfe and Takal lean harder into the goofy specifics of their conceit, the real-world horror disappears from view. The intention of Black Christmas, to bring a more pronounced feminism and female agency to the slasher film, is one to be applauded and somewhere in the universe there’s an intelligent, self-aware script capable of doing this, cleaning up dusty tropes and dragging them to the present day. This isn’t it. Black Christmas is released on 13 December.

Madthedj December 22, 2010 at 1:05 am I have both DVD editions of this film, having become fascinated with its production when I discovered it years ago. It was shot in my city of Toronto, Canada, and stars some classic actors well-known to Canadian viewers, like Margot Kidder and John Saxon, and future SCTV alumnus comedienne Andrea Martin. The college exterior shots were at the University of Toronto. Other landmarks pop up here and there. (Side note, even today, perhaps more so these days, Toronto doubles as New York and Chicago quite often in “American” movies…as recently as “Kickass”…but I digress). And yeah, the connection to “Halloween” is by far a seriously neglected fact when so-called horror fans talk about the evolution of the modern slasher film. It’s getting more recognition now, but (as noted in the review) without a killer-personality (like Myers, Voorhees, Kruger or Leatherface) to attach to it, it’s been overshadowed by its successors. Truly, though, if “Halloween” is the father of modern slashers, it’s children are “Friday The 13th” and “A Nightmare On Elm Street” (which also has John Saxon, lest we forget). “Halloween”‘s parents, the grandparents of the modern slasher: equal parts “Black Christmas” and “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”. Первый из которых вышел в декабре 2006-го стараниями MGM и Dimension Films братьев Вайнштейнов (Bob & Harvey Weinstein), и еле окупил в международном прокате (21. 5 миллионов общих сборов) свой довольно скромный по меркам Голливуда бюджет в 9 миллионов долларов, получив в придачу уничижительные рецензии профессиональных критиков и не менее негативные отзывы простых зрителей. Казалось бы, после такого провала стоило оставить в покое культовую классику, тем более что и оригинальный то фильм Кларка был, мягко говоря, неоднозначным. Но нет, голливудским фирмачам в лице сверхуспешного жанрового продюсера Джейсона Блума (Jason Blum) захотелось попытать счастья с этой собственностью еще разок, мол, права на нее куплены, так чего же им на полке просто так лежать. Видимо, у Джейсона случилось "головокружение от успехов" и он реально поверил в то, что может из любого проекта сотворить машинку для зарабатывания денег, что у него буквально все получится. Но получилось даже хуже, чем у Вайнштейнов в 2006-м... ? ?Возможно потому, что никто кроме совсем "конченых" не хочет платить свои кровные за то, чтобы полтора часа с кровью из глаз смотреть на идиотскую агитку "радикального феминизма", криво завернутую в оболочку бескровного PG-13 "типа слэшера". Но обо всем по порядку. Итак, на территории кампуса некоего Hawthorne College, основанного двести лет назад женоненавистником Калебом Хауторном (Caleb Hawthorne), начинается подготовка к Рождеству, а членам "сестринства" MKE на телефоны приходят сообщения с угрозами, которые очень быстро начинают исполняться, - девушки становятся жертвами жестокого убийцы в "церемониальной" накидке. Точнее, убийц, что выясняется к концу второго акта фильма. ? ?И да, это спойлер, но я готов вам рассказать про эту дичь абсолютно все, чтобы вы даже и не думали смотреть эту кошмарную во всех отношениях отрыжку псевдофеминизма, от которой плеваться будут, я уверен, даже сами "феминистки". Потому что в новом "Черном Рождестве" режиссер и сценаристка (совместно с другой бабой, некоей April Wolfe) София Такаль выдала на-гора такую несусветную мужененавистническую чушь, что от происходящего на экране будут ежеминутно закатывать глаза буквально все категории зрителей, включая самых нетребовательных. А уж поклонники оригинала Кларка и подавно, потому что в новом ремейке от его фильма, кроме места действия (университетский кампус), не осталось и следа. А нет, вру, остались еще скабрезные и угрожающие сообщения, которые теперь не проговариваются с придыханием в телефон, а шлются девчонкам "в директ". В остальном же это два совершенно разных фильма, и "Черным Рождеством" эта картина называется исключительно ради того, чтобы получить шанс на дополнительные заработки. Которых уже, судя по результатам первой недели проката, у фильма не будет, и поделом, потому что безотносительно его "феминистского месседжа" это просто очень плохое кино. Но об этом чуть позже, а о "месседже" прямо сейчас. ? ?Я искренне не понимаю зачем Джейсон Блум, а вместе с ним и дистрибьютор Universal дали "независимой кинематографиньше" Софии Такаль пять миллионов на этот проект, но распорядилась она ими по-свински, показав один большой "фак", по сути, своим продюсерам, которые все, как нетрудно догадаться, являются мужчинами. Потому что в понимании Софии все мужики - насильники, козлы и моральные уроды, и даже те, кто не козлы (толерантно один "белый", и один полунегрилка, а, блин, латиноса почему забыли? ;)), то все равно козлы! :) Теперь, все члены студенческого "сестринства" как на подбор фриковаты, и все со своими "тараканами", но выделяются из этой когорты, конечно, "типа крутая" мулатка, которая достает всех в университете своим "активизмом", и внешне малосимпатичная главная героиня в исполнении откровенно староватой для этой роли (1989-го года рождения) англичанки Имоген Путс, которую "изнасиловал" глава братства AKO три года назад. Почему "изнасиловал" я ставлю в кавычки? Да потому что ее история не выдерживает никакой критики и совсем неудивительно, что даже по фильму в полиции девушке не поверили, решив не выдвигать против парня никаких обвинений. А история ее, буквально, следующая: на вечеринке я немного прибухнула и отправилась в комнату с суперсимпатичным парнем, но давать ему не собиралась, однако он меня там опоил, и в бессознательном (это важно! ) состоянии вы#$ал, но я, при этом, все помню!!! :) Изнасилование прям как оно есть, классическое! (нет) Но дальше - больше. Учатся эти девки в колледже с яркими женоненавистническими традициями, основанном известным женоненавистником, бюст которого мироточит черной слизью, заставляя участников братства совершать магические ритуалы и убивать всех девок, личные вещи которых им принесли на блюдечке (почти буквально)! Из личных вещей, при этом, там находятся предметы женской гигиены и чуть ли не вибраторы, шуткой о которых София поделилась со зрителями почти в самом начале своего фильма, что должно было, видимо, настроить аудиторию на нужный ей лад.
