How they have it written in their textbook is totally different and better then this play. My favorite part in the whole play is the last scene of the last act. I even memorized it like it was translated by Gladys Thomas and Mary F. Guillemard. In the book it is much more poetic and flowery fitting both the characters and time period. Even the last line by Cyrano is different. Your average audience won't know that Cyrano's white plumb represented his clean honor that he had maintained throughout the play. So in the textbook's version his last line says, My honor. Clear and poetic. Also, I agree that the acting is horrible. Why do the actors feel like they need to yell out the lines in a strained voice? Don't they have microphones to do that. In my school I was able to watch the BJU production of the play and that was completely different then this version. The actors for Cyrano, Roxanne, and Christian were much better. This play will still continue to be my favorite just not this rendition of it.

Naturally, hilarity (and swashbuckling, and eventually tragedy) ensues. Is there a moral? Well, "don't let vanity hold you back, " and " Love at First Sight is ridiculous. " The play also introduced the term panache into the English language. Literally it means "plume", feathers worn in hats and helmets, but it has come to signify confidence and flamboyance such as demonstrated by Cyrano in the play. Critics thus consider the play notable for being both a cruel satire and straight celebration of the tropes and themes most associated with the The Cavalier Years. The two most respected English translations are Brian Hooker's from 1923 and Anthony Burgess' from 1971. Hooker's version is a translation that doesn't change a line of Rostand's original text except for replacing now-archaic references with references an American audience would be more likely to recognize. While Rostand's French script rhymed, Hooker's English script doesn't, except for things that rhymed in-story such as Cyrano's improvised ballad during his duel with Valvert. Burgess' version is more of a "modern adaptation" in which he claimed he tried to recapture some of Rostand's comedy that he felt was lost in Hooker's translation. This play is as well researched as a Roman à Clef, because Rostand was an academic that researched France’s literary environment at the 17th century, so all the incidental writers, poets, actors, period pieces, places and battles really existed at that time. There are two notable film adaptations: one from 1950 in English (using the Hooker translation) which garnered a Best Actor for José Ferrer, and the acclaimed 1990 French version directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau and starring Gérard Depardieu (with the Burgess translation later used for subtitles). In addition, the 1987 movie Roxanne, starring Steve Martin, is a modernized take on the story. The Disney Channel original movie Let it Shine is also clearly based off of this play, even going as far as to giving the main characters similar names (Cyrano= Cyrus; Christian= Chris; Roxanne= Roxy, whose full name is actually Roxanne). There were also a couple of Musical adaptations. Arranged Marriage: Implied in De Guiche’s marriage, De Guiche tried it with Roxana and De Valvert, and Invoked with Christian and Roxane. Artistic License ? History: Acte V is explicitely set in 1655, yet it mentions Molière's The Schemes of Scapin, which was created much later (the premiere was in 1671). Balcony Wooing Scene: An iconic and often-parodied example of the trope is the scene when Christian reads romantic lines from the garden to his love interest Roxanne who is up on the balcony, while Cyrano hides and feeds him lines. Eventually, Cyrano takes over and starts wooing Roxanne directly, while pretending to be Christian. Some actors portraying Cyrano show him growing more visibly annoyed at Christian's interruptions and play up the comedy of his attempting to compose himself. But before this scene, he roasted then wounded de Valvert in a duel for saying "you have a big nose". Be Yourself: Poor Christian believes in this philosophy. I t just about works because the play is indestructible. But I can't help feeling there is something a touch perverse about a rough theatre version of Rostand's romantic melodrama in a theatre the size of the Olivier: for once, I found myself craving a bit more colour and spectacle. The fact is that Rostand wrote his play in 1897 in reaction to the growing realism of Ibsen and Zola: "tendencies", he wrote, "which infuriated and revolted me". But here we get a stripped-down version of the play set roughly in Rostand's own time and staged in and around a massive William Dudley steel climbing-frame with two vast walkways extending over the stalls. It would, you feel, make an exciting design for West Side Story. But it has an oddly functional feel for a play that glories in rhetoric, rodomontade, swagger and swordplay. Derek Mahon's version also does everything to bring the play down to earth. It bulges with four-letter words, calculatedly anachronistic references to "Schnozzle" Durante, euros and breezeblocks and jokey improprieties. "The pompous windbag has a waist so thick, " says Cyrano of the detested Montfleury, "I doubt that he has ever seen his dick". Mahon's rhymes often click wittily into place and his language is full of demotic verve but when Roxane cries, "we've had too much of beauty" you feel she speaks as much for the translator as herself. Yet you can't suppress the play's inherent energy or the pathos of Cyrano's self-sacrificing love for Roxane. Howard Davies's production also fills the stage with hectic activity. There's a stirring moment, very well choreographed by Christopher Bruce, when we first see the Gascon cadets fencing and fighting like immaculate toy soldiers. This also gets its pay-off in the battle scenes when they become ragged, starving, wearily besieged figures who might almost be fighting on the Somme. Stephen Rea inhabits the title role with great skill. I'm not sure the text quite sustains his attempt to portray Cyrano as a truth-telling equivalent of Molière's Alceste. But Rea gives the rhymed lines a feeling of spontaneity and is infallibly moving in his proxy wooing of Roxane and in his final revelation of long-nurtured passion. Claire Price's duped Roxane, Zubin Varla's doltish Christian and Malcolm Storry's Machiavellian Count de Guiche also offer strongly defined performances in a deromanticised production in which Rostand finally wins out. ? His delivery of Rostand's sentiments was so natural in its articulation and emotional content that he didn't seem to be rendering a scripted dialog at all, especially during the duel at the theater. He so deserved his best performance award. The foibles of some of the rest of the cast were lost in the dazzle of the show Ferrer put on, although his brilliance could do nothing to hide the overhead microphone that popped into view during the portion of the duel on stage where Cyrano tossed the vicomte's epee into the air. I usually don't particular like it when a play is put on film, but this was absolutely charming. I love the dialogue, especially the scene at the beginning where Cyrano says things like "Small my nose? Why, magnificent my nose! " and such. The MPEG2 copy here is good, although the contrast is rather poor. I only want to add that I had no problem playing this or any other film downloaded from this site on either the VLC player () or KMPlayer (just search, it can be downloaded from several places). These are both free, and both play almost any media file without the need for additional codecs. I've never had either of them try to uninstall any existing software on my computers nor have they caused any conflicts. If you're having trouble, you might try one or the other. Mala Powers, who died just last June from Leukemia, and who appeared in over 70 movies and television shows during her career. Hard to believe Cyrano was only her fourth. Then William Prince: This actor looks AND sounds a LOT like Lew Ayres which probably didn't help him any in getting film roles. Most of his work, until a couple of years before his death in 1996, was on television. this adaptation of the play. It's the best. OK, you may have and may still see other films or television presentations that give you the WHOLE play but you will NEVER see Cyrano played better than Mr. Ferrar did here. (There's a reason it got him the best actor Oscar for that year---AND a Golden Globe). FIVE STARS FOR CYRANO. NOW: If you have sound but no video (I have observed this problem with several different files) one way to fix this is to install the k-lite codec pack which you can now download from the go HEREk THEN watch your movie in the Windows Classic Media Player that comes with that pack. I did it and sound and picture both work fine. One note about the codec pack. 2 things will happen when you install the first of the two downloads I have put here for you. ONE it will drag you to K-Lite's official webpage to get the update. But you already have the update (I assume you downloaded BOTH files) so just shut their page down with a nod of thanks and go ahead and install the update. The second thing that will happen is that it will try to UNinstall any divx software you may have. Depending on how much storage space and how much RAM you have it is usually safe to keep your old software as well as this. It will try to argue with you but be firm. I have tried it BOTH ways and I have more choice keeping both and no system instability either. What am I doing wrong? surfvh Use Quicktime 7 under Apple's System 10. 39; it never fails I've downloaded somewhere between 300-400 movies off of this site and never had any trouble playing those movies using the above combination of software and burning those movies to DVD using Final Cut Pro. This is despite comments left by other people who seem to be having various odd problems playing and burning those same movies. For instance, I just downloaded and watched the MP4 version of this movie, Cyrano de Bergerac, and had no problems with it... the sound is all there and so is the picture. Try the above setup, it always works perfectly for me. As to my opinion of this movie, it was the best version available until Gerard Depardieu did his in French (worth learning the language if only for that reason). I had the same problem as the previous two posters, having downloaded the MPG file and then the MP4 file, to find that neither had sound after about 15 minutes. I have now downloaded the MPEG2 file and can confirm that it has sound throughout. The only problem I had with it, is that the last minute or 2 seems to be missing - it cuts off abruptly during the last scene and there are no end titles. Don't know if this is just me, or is this copy missing the last minute or so? In any case, this is such a brilliant movie - so well written, and Jose Ferrer's acting in the lead role is superb, really making this wonderful feisty character his own. I saw this film years ago and was so impressed with it, and it's great to see it again.
