"Vazquez was tougher than I expected," said Donaire, who thought the hand was broken. "I couldn't find my rhythm, and I hurt my hand somewhere between the second and fourth rounds. I could only move it a little bit."

Donaire, making his debut in the 122-pound weight class, looked frustrated at times but took it to Vazquez and certainly did enough to win despite a disagreement among the judges. Levi Martinez and Don Trella both had it 117-110 for Donaire while Ruben Garcia had it 115-112 for Puerto Rico's Vazquez, the son of former three-division titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. ESPN.com also had it for Donaire, 117-110.

Donaire, 29, had a big third round, sending Vazquez reeling into a corner with a combination and then rocking him with several shots while he was pinned in the corner. But Vazquez was able to punch out of the dangerous spot as they engaged in an action-packed sequence that ended when Vazquez threw a wild shot, missed and fell to the mat from his own momentum.

Although Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs) seemed in control, he also seemed to be getting frustrated that he couldn't really do much damage to Vazquez even though he was landing shots.

He was warned for a low blow in the seventh round and was clowning around in the eighth, as if to try to draw Vazquez (21-2-1, 18 KOs) into him.

Donaire finally broke through in the ninth round when he caught Vazquez, 27, with a left uppercut followed by a hard left hand that dropped Vazquez. He was up quickly, however, and Donaire wasn't able to do any more damage in the final 30 seconds of the round.

"When I knocked him down in the ninth round, that was the end of the hand," Donaire said. "I was in agony."

There is a lot of potential business for Donaire at 122 pounds, and he intends to deal with it, which means potential fights with Jorge Arce, Toshiaki Nishioka and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. set aside weight struggles and even a training camp arrest to overpower and outlast Marco Antonio Rubio in a toe-to-toe scrap Saturday in San Antonio. Story

"I'm definitely staying at 122 for awhile," Donaire said. "There are things [trainer] Robert [Garcia] asked me to do that I couldn't do so well, so we will go back to the drawing board."

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said the next fight for Donaire probably will be Arce, who vacated the title Donaire won to move down and claim one of the bantamweight belts Donaire had relinquished. Arce would move back up to 122 to challenge Donaire.

"Let's see what happens with his hand first," Arum said of Donaire. "That will determine everything, but depending on the timing, we want him to face Arce next."

Vazquez was bidding to regain the title he lost in May to Arce, but he had trouble with Donaire's speed.

"He's real quick," Vazquez said. "He caught me with some good punches. He surprised me by hitting me when I was off balance. I thought I did pretty well. I was patient, but he is a great fighter."

SAN ANTONIO -- Nonito Donaire, who has already won titles at flyweight and bantamweight, plus an interim title at junior bantamweight, won yet another piece of hardware.

The "Filipino Flash," despite a damaged left hand that was soaked in blood when his glove was removed after the fight, won a split decision against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to claim a vacant junior featherweight title Saturday night at the Alamodome in the co-featured bout on the card headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s middleweight title defense against Marco Antonio Rubio.

Five division champion Jorge Arce, Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka, and two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux are just some of the lucrative fights awaiting Nonito Donaire Jr., the newly-crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight champion.

Despite settling for a split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico, Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Alamodome in Texas, the “Filipino Flash” may be lining himself up as a marquee player in the division where compatriot and global boxing icon Manny Pacquiao once reigned.

Already, Donaire has been challenged by the camp of Rigondeaux, the current World Boxing Association (WBA) super-bantamweight title holder, and an Olympic bantamweight gold medalist in the 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens Games).

From the looks of things though, Arce seems to be the logical choice as the Filipino’s next opponent.

Bob Arum, whose Top Rank Promotions holds the rights on Donaire, admitted looking at a possible May or June date with Arce, depending on how fast Nonito’s injured left hand heals.

“Let’s see what happens with his hand first,” said Arum. “That will determine everything, but depending on the timing, we want him to face Arce next.”

Arce actually dethroned Vazquez Jr.a year ago, winning the WBO super-bantamweight title on a 12th round technical knockout.

After successfully defending that title against South African Simphiwe Nongqayi in a fourth round TKO, Arce went down to bantamweight, winning the WBO 118-lbs. title with a unanimous decision over Angky Angkota.

Nishioka, the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) super-bantamweight champion, had once been on the radar of Donaire, and was supposed to be challenged by the Filipino until the fight with Vazquez Jr. came through.

But the two nonetheless are expected to cross paths as Donaire himself admitted he is comfortable fighting at the 122 lbs. limit.

“I’m definitely staying at 122 for a while,” said Donaire, who improved to 28-1, with 18 KOs following the win over Vazquez.

“There are things (trainer) Robert (Garcia) asked me to do that I couldn’t do so well, so we will go back to the drawing board.”

Vazquez believes Donaire will make his mark in the division.

“He's real quick,” said the son and namesake of former three-division champion Wilfredo Vazquez. “He caught me with some good punches. He surprised me by hitting me when I was off balance. I thought I did pretty well. I was patient, but he is a great fighter.” — AD/RSJ, GMA News

Takalani Ndlovu would love nothing more than to take a big swing at some of the new faces atop the 122 lb. division. First, he is forced to take care of old business, as the veteran prepares for a March 24 rematch with countryman Jeffrey Mathebula in a mandatory title defense

The bout takes place at the historic Carnival City in Brakpan, South Africa, paired up with another title fight rematch as strawweight titlist Nkosinathi Joyi hopes to settle up unfinished business with Katsunari Tokayama.

“We could not have asked for a better grudge match than the Ndlovu-Mathebula (rematch) for our return to Carnival City,” exclaims a thrilled Branco Mllenkovich, who promotes both fighters. “This is the fight that needs no marketing because it markets itself after the war the two fighters waged in their first bout.”

Their first fight, which took place in Sept. ’10, was a 12-round war with Ndlovu (33-6, 18KO) prevailing by split decision. Aside from the one obscene scorecard of 118-109, the night was memorable for all of the right reasons and also put Ndlovu back in line to finally capture a title.

The 34-year old had twice come up short against Steve Molitor – both times on the road in Canada – but the third time proved to be a charm as his promoter was able to win the purse bid and bring home to South Africa. Ndlovu finally prevailed, taking a surprisingly wide decision for his first major title.

His lone defense came more than seven months later, taking a hard-fought decision on the road over Giovanni Caro in his opponent’s native Mexico.

After the win, Ndlovu – who made the road trip to prove to the rest of the division his willingness to travel in order to make the best fights – sought challenges with then-titlist Jorge Arce, along with incoming Nonito Donaire and Japan’s Toshiaki Nishioka, arguably the best in the division.

The backup plan was always Mathebula, as the safer route for a titlist looking to remain active is generally to get his mandatory defense out of the way before proceeding to bigger opportunities.

Mathebula (25-3-2, 14KO) enters the fight on a two-fight win streak, including a win over Oscar Chauke in their June ’11 title eliminator.

A member of South Africa’s 2000 Olympic boxing squad, Mathebula has endured hard luck as a pro. In addition to his points loss to Ndlovu, the 32-year old also came up just short in a disputed points loss to then-unified 122 lb. titlist Celestino Caballero in April ’09.

His hope is that a title defense in his backyard will change things around much in the same fashion of his countryman and repeat opponent a year ago.

MANILA, Philippines – Newly crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire entered The RING’s division ratings following his successful debut at the weight class last Saturday in San Antonio (Sunday in Manila).

Donaire, who previously won titles at the bantamweight division, dominated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to win via split decision and annex the WBO title in his debut at the super bantamweight/junior featherweight division (122-pound weight limit).

After his victory, RingTV promoted Donaire to No. 3 in the junior featherweight/super bantamweight division ratings.

“Two panel members thought he should enter the 122-pound ratings at No. 8, where Vazquez was rated last week,” RingTV editor Michael Rosenthal wrote.

“Others thought he should be rated as high as No. 3, behind only No. 1 Toshiaki Nishioka and Guillermo Rigondeaux.”

RingTV’s editorial board decided to put Donaire at No. 3, saying that even if Donaire has only one victory at the division, “it was against a rated fighter.”

“More important, we can’t ignore his impressive track record at the lower weights: The man is a proven stud,” Rosenthal added. “His victories over the likes of Vic Darchinyan, Wladimir Sidorenko and Fernando Montiel were spectacular.”

Donaire remains at No. 4 in the pound-for-pound ratings. Meanwhile, Vazquez dropped to No. 10 in the junior featherweight division.

MANILA, Philippines – Newly crowned WBO super bantamweight king Nonito Donaire Jr. will be lined up against Mexican slugger and former world champion Jorge Arce.

"Arce is next," Donaire's manager Cameron Dunkin said in an interview with Philippine News' Truth Esguerra. "We have an agreement already, and he's got to fight Arce."

Dunkin said the Donaire-Arce fight has been planned all along.

He said they are also looking at future fights against WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka and WBA titlist Guillermo Rigondeaux.

"We have an agreement in principle with the Japanese guy (Nishioka), so he’s got fights ahead of him. After that we'll look at [WBA champ Guillermo] Rigondeaux, of course," said Dunkin.

Dunkin said the Arce fight date will now depend on Donaire’s recovery from hand injury.

Donaire hurt his left hand midway his 12-round bout with Vazquez.

"Hopefully this hand's not a big deal, and we see him back in the ring in April or something, I hope," Dunkin said.
