The reason why I wanted to do the movie overall is the same reason why I wanted to shoot the car chase this way. And that was because its sort of like a POV driven story. In order to see the necessary things, in order to make the audience feel what shes feeling, we were going to have to coordinate really particularly between what Blake was doing in the car as Stephanie and what was happening outside in the front versus what was happening in the back or the side of the car. And Sean Bobbitt, my DP, was super excited about this as well. So what happened was was we had this old Merc, this old Mercedes. And this was the tiniest car ever. And Sean Bobbitt is a really big guy. But they took out all the seats on the passenger side and built like a slider, like a rail system, with a little seat that he would sit on. But he could slide back and forth. But he was also secured in other ways. But he had mobility to kind of be up front by the window. He could pan towards Stephanie. And he could also pan towards the back window. But he could also slide really far back when he needed to get another view. Part of the reason why the chase is so successful is not only because of all the coordinated efforts of all the stunt people were happening at the right time. It was also Blake carries the scene, and her energy is changing, you know, up and down and throughout like an emotional roller coaster. Stephanie Patrick, the wannabe assassin played by Blake Lively, is sure as hell not cut out for the job. She scares easy, fumbles with guns, and cant fight for shit. Charlize Therons Atomic Blonde would laugh her off the screen. But dont mistake this busy-work thriller for a comedy. Based on a bestseller by Mark Burnell, The Rhythm Section is Stephanies origin story, covering her transformation from beautiful Oxford student into avenging angel when she learns from that the death of her parents in a jet crash was no accident. A journalist named Proctor (Raza Jeffrey) informs her that a radical Islamic terrorist bombed the plane on purpose. But it takes three years before Stephanie rouses herself to action. First, she buries her grief in heroin that she pays for by selling her body on the cheap. Yikes. Lively gives everything shes got to the role, including a credible British accent and a willingness to look like crap. Director Reed Morano, an Emmy winner for The Handmaids Tale, never misses a chance to light her fire. So what goes wrong? The problem is the script, written by author Burnell (he has four Stephanie Patrick novels in print to date) whose twists feel generic and narratively lazy. As Stephanie learns the ropes about the killing game from former MI6 agent Iain Boyd (a scrappy Jude Law) ? he trains her at his Scotland hideaway ? the film goes from unlikely to WTF in seconds flat. Sterling K. Brown shows up as some kind of assassin broker to add another spy angle the movie didnt need. Did producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, gurus of the James Bond universe, want to turn Stephanie into a female 007? If so, their efforts quickly go off the rails. Any psychological probing soon gives way to been-there-done-that action formula, with pop tunes pounding home the obvious. Burnell offers a fancy-pants explanation of the title: “Your heart is the drums, your breathing is the bass ? keep the rhythm section tight, and the rest of the song plays itself. ” Does it? Long before the movie drags to an end, you get the distinct impression that there is no one home behind the camera. Lively suffered an accident during production that resulted in lengthy shooting delays. Its a shame no one took that time to fix the mess left behind. For instance, why does Stephanie wear different wigs that have no relation to the plot or to basic logic? You can feel the desperation of the filmmakers as they throw in fist fights, car chases, and, yes, more wig changes to give an illusion of momentum to a grab bag of botched ideas. No sale.

First, the director, Reed Morano, has spent much of her career as a cinematographer and camera operator, so the action scenes here, of which there are many, really pop. Most notably, she's found something new to do with the traditional car chase. In one such sequence, Morano shows us a lot of the four-wheel street pandemonium from inside the chased car (through the rear window, through a side window, etc. This creates a sense of claustrophobic panic that's especially distressing. The movie also benefits from the presence of the matchless Blake Lively, seriously scruffing down to play Stephanie Patrick, a onetime Oxford student (supposedly English, but with a decidedly transatlantic accent) whose life has been derailed by the death of her parents and siblings, all of whom were killed in a plane crash. This event left Stephanie so distraught that she switched majors and now works as a prostitute in a grubby London bordello, her arms pricked with track marks and her eyes dark pools of despair. Fortunately, Jude Law, playing a disgraced MI6 agent named Boyd (or just "B" will do) is on hand to help. Stephanie tracks this character down to his remote digs in rural Scotland after being approached in London by an investigative journalist named Proctor (Raza Jaffrey) who claims to have proof that the plane on which Stephanie's family perished was actually blown out of the sky by a terrorist bomb. Not only that, but the bomber is still at large, and so is the evil scumbag controlling him, and both are being protected by a cabal of shadowy intelligence poohbahs. (Presumably, the same people who've come up with the rather silly scumbag pseudonym of U-17. Through precociously sneaky means, Stephanie learns that Proctor's source for this story is B, and when she finally sneaks up on him in Scotland…well, let's say she fails to catch him unawares. Law is quietly charismatic as always playing an omnicompetent man of several lethal talents; and as he begins training Stephanie for her self-assigned mission to terminate her family's killers, we can feel the movie settling easily into the tradition of such films as La Femme Nikita, Hanna, Anna and any number of other pictures in which young women are transformed by skillful men into remorseless assassins. The Rhythm Section suffers from comparison to those earlier films, however. It starts out strong, as you'd expect of a movie produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. And Sean Bobbitt, my DP, was super excited about this as well. So what happened was was we had this old Merc, this old Mercedes. And this was the tiniest car ever. And Sean Bobbitt is a really big guy. But they took out all the seats on the passenger side and built like a slider, like a rail system, with a little seat that he would sit on. But he could slide back and forth. But he was also secured in other ways. But he had mobility to kind of be up front by the window. He could pan towards Stephanie. And he could also pan towards the back window. But he could also slide really far back when he needed to get another view. Part of the reason why the chase is so successful is not only because of all the coordinated efforts of all the stunt people were happening at the right time. It was also Blake carries the scene, and her energy is changing, you know, up and down and throughout like an emotional roller coaster. Stephanie Patrick, the wannabe assassin played by Blake Lively, is sure as hell not cut out for the job. She scares easy, fumbles with guns, and cant fight for shit. Charlize Therons Atomic Blonde would laugh her off the screen. But dont mistake this busy-work thriller for a comedy. Based on a bestseller by Mark Burnell, The Rhythm Section is Stephanies origin story, covering her transformation from beautiful Oxford student into avenging angel when she learns from that the death of her parents in a jet crash was no accident. A journalist named Proctor (Raza Jeffrey) informs her that a radical Islamic terrorist bombed the plane on purpose. But it takes three years before Stephanie rouses herself to action. First, she buries her grief in heroin that she pays for by selling her body on the cheap. Yikes. Lively gives everything shes got to the role, including a credible British accent and a willingness to look like crap. Director Reed Morano, an Emmy winner for The Handmaids Tale, never misses a chance to light her fire. So what goes wrong? The problem is the script, written by author Burnell (he has four Stephanie Patrick novels in print to date) whose twists feel generic and narratively lazy. As Stephanie learns the ropes about the killing game from former MI6 agent Iain Boyd (a scrappy Jude Law) ? he trains her at his Scotland hideaway ? the film goes from unlikely to WTF in seconds flat. Sterling K. Brown shows up as some kind of assassin broker to add another spy angle the movie didnt need. Did producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, gurus of the James Bond universe, want to turn Stephanie into a female 007? If so, their efforts quickly go off the rails. Any psychological probing soon gives way to been-there-done-that action formula, with pop tunes pounding home the obvious. Burnell offers a fancy-pants explanation of the title: “Your heart is the drums, your breathing is the bass ? keep the rhythm section tight, and the rest of the song plays itself. ” Does it? Long before the movie drags to an end, you get the distinct impression that there is no one home behind the camera. Lively suffered an accident during production that resulted in lengthy shooting delays. Its a shame no one took that time to fix the mess left behind. For instance, why does Stephanie wear different wigs that have no relation to the plot or to basic logic? You can feel the desperation of the filmmakers as they throw in fist fights, car chases, and, yes, more wig changes to give an illusion of momentum to a grab bag of botched ideas. No sale.

Most notably, she's found something new to do with the traditional car chase. In one such sequence, Morano shows us a lot of the four-wheel street pandemonium from inside the chased car (through the rear window, through a side window, etc. This creates a sense of claustrophobic panic that's especially distressing. The movie also benefits from the presence of the matchless Blake Lively, seriously scruffing down to play Stephanie Patrick, a onetime Oxford student (supposedly English, but with a decidedly transatlantic accent) whose life has been derailed by the death of her parents and siblings, all of whom were killed in a plane crash. This event left Stephanie so distraught that she switched majors and now works as a prostitute in a grubby London bordello, her arms pricked with track marks and her eyes dark pools of despair. Fortunately, Jude Law, playing a disgraced MI6 agent named Boyd (or just "B" will do) is on hand to help. Stephanie tracks this character down to his remote digs in rural Scotland after being approached in London by an investigative journalist named Proctor (Raza Jaffrey) who claims to have proof that the plane on which Stephanie's family perished was actually blown out of the sky by a terrorist bomb. Not only that, but the bomber is still at large, and so is the evil scumbag controlling him, and both are being protected by a cabal of shadowy intelligence poohbahs. (Presumably, the same people who've come up with the rather silly scumbag pseudonym of U-17. Through precociously sneaky means, Stephanie learns that Proctor's source for this story is B, and when she finally sneaks up on him in Scotland…well, let's say she fails to catch him unawares. Law is quietly charismatic as always playing an omnicompetent man of several lethal talents; and as he begins training Stephanie for her self-assigned mission to terminate her family's killers, we can feel the movie settling easily into the tradition of such films as La Femme Nikita, Hanna, Anna and any number of other pictures in which young women are transformed by skillful men into remorseless assassins. The Rhythm Section suffers from comparison to those earlier films, however. It starts out strong, as you'd expect of a movie produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G.
