This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's probably easier to talk about the things Friends and I liked about this movie since the list is so short. I first want to draw your attention, dear reader, to the fact that the trailer for this movie was very pretty. You too may have noticed the copious wigs that Blake Lively wears and think, hey, I haven't seen a good wig movie since Colossal--or wait, was it The Hustle? Did they both have Anne Hathaway in them? Am I confusing The Hustle with Hustlers? Is she also in American Hustle or is that Amy Adams? She's going to be the Head Witch in that Roald Dahl movie this fall. What's it called? The Witches, right--and if you were thinking that you too are probably the demo for this movie. The greatest strength of this movie, whose screenplay is written by the same person who authored the novel, is the central gimmick of the story: fish out of water/fish learns in extended first act how to do the broad strokes of assassin work/still occasionally makes mistakes/falls out of fishbowl. Lively's character is almost purposefully amateurish at action heroing, which leads to some important blunders early in the movie, like when she lets the probably maybe bomber who killed her family get away from his lunch and then go into hiding. Her inexperience creates the gritty aesthetic to all the fight scenes: an objective lens to violence, slow, and painful hits, brawls, and slugs to the stomach of disabled terrorists, the slapdash tumble in the bus. For Friends this was off-putting and I think for them it made her seem really dumb and clumsy, but I'm a fan of a good brawl in favor of the glossy, photoshopped, over-choreographed fight scenes of my youth typified by movies like The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Give me a Drunken Angel any day. (On this point, I will say that there are some movies that do a really great job of choreographing fight scenes in fresh ways like Sisters Brothers, where the drama isn't in the fight so much as the ability of those wielding such power to deal with the emotional consequences of their destruction, or even something like Birds of Prey, where the power of luck and accident is powerful and creates humor and tension in the fight. 1917, for all its faults and emptiness, wasn't shy about stripping bare the unromantic elements of warmaking. It would honestly be kind of fun to plot out on a graph all the movies of the past two years on a scale from completely choreographed, romantic to ultra-realistic. ) The car chase scene is also pretty lovely and a nice walk down memory lane for anyone who's been thirsty for Northern Africa since Only Lovers Left Alive. Thus ends the list of things we liked. I'm going to include a section for light criticism and questions at the bottom if you're in the mood to inform: I lost track of the bombmaker toward the end of this movie in the scene where Blake breaks into his house but then is interrupted by the entrance of an unknown extra terrorist guy. When she shoots a bunch of people in that apartment, I honestly thought that she'd at that point completed her mission, and didn't even realize we were still looking for him on the bus. So when she gets to the bus and the wife with the suicide vest is there it feels really jarring, like someone's made an impossible phase shift or time has passed supernaturally quickly. Blake's major thing was being a linguist but she hardly speaks any other language than English. Most of her skills from "being top of her class at Oxford" don't seem to come in handy, which leads me to believe that we're all just a dead family away from showing up in the cheapest brothel imaginable. (Spoiler:) Sterling K Brown's disillusioned ex-CIA monologue was an intriguing look into the psyche of a broken agent, but once we get that he¡Çs the villain it feels vapid and obvious. I liked him better when he was a sexy go-between. It also makes Jude Law's identity and the source of all of his information feel really unresolved at the end of this movie. Blake herself shouts at him through the phone during their winter sequence, "How could you know that? Who's giving you this information? " and I for one am also still not entirely sure how he has received all of these case-busting tips about currently active terrorist cells. Besides still wondering how Jude Law knows what he knows about U-17, is the spy he killed his wife or...? I kept waiting to be spoonfed the past relationship between him and the agent whose identity Blake is taking over, and then it never came, so I now feel pretty stupid about all of that backstory. Anyway, it will not live up to your expectations unless your expectations were that the first forty minutes are mostly really forgettable and that you could probably walk into the movie cold about three quarters of an hour in during the training sequence and still have a really fun time. ¡Ä Expand.

Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2020 Format: Prime Video ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É Distributed by Paramount Pictures, 109 Minutes, Rated R, Released January 31, 2020: In ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section, ¡É a young British woman is emotionally devastated when her parents and younger brother are killed in a Pan Am Flight 103-like airline disaster, and spirals into a malaise of despair and substance abuse. But when the distraught woman learns that the plane crash was actually the result of a bomb planted on the airliner, she emerges from her melancholy and begins to train herself as an assassin, with the single-minded intention of avenging herself on the international terrorists responsible for killing her beloved family. Adapted by Mark Burnell from his 1999 novel of the same name and directed by former cinematographer Reed Morano, ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É makes the fatal mistake of presuming the viewer is already familiar with the original novel, and is therefore able to grasp the movie¡Çs intricacies without further explanation. Jetting from locations from London to Madrid to Tangier to New York to Marseilles, the picture resembles a collection of the author¡Çs favorite parts from his novel, stitched together with the briefest transitions or reasons possible. The result often leaves the viewer bewildered, stranded on the outside, looking in. ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É is further complicated by Marano¡Çs often photographing the narrative in a jittery and pasty manner reminiscent of news footage from the front lines of a war zone. The chainsaw editing and visual palette might enhance the picture¡Çs sense of realism and immediacy, but simultaneously interrupts the viewer¡Çs illusion and makes the story that much more difficult to follow. The picture spends so much time trying to be stylish, arty, and cutting edge that it forgets to be comprehensible. And the filmmakers never even bother to explain the movie¡Çs intriguing title. Still, ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É is almost redeemed by a terrific performance by actress Blake Lively as Stephanie Patrick, the central character of Burnell¡Çs series of novels. Wounded, dewy-eyed, drug-addicted, haunted by gauzy memories of happier times and appearing in a succession of wigs and disguises, Lively portrays Burnell¡Çs heroine in flesh-and-blood terms which often elude the film incarnations of Steig Larsson¡Çs similar Lisbeth Salander character. A genuinely talented and surprisingly eclectic actor who¡Çs often the best part of flawed pictures, Lively with her vivid performance provides almost singlehandedly whatever interest ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É generates. Produced on a budget of $50 million by the people behind the megabucks James Bond motion picture franchise, ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É often seems to be a form of James Bond Lite, a new character for the new millennium, a new age heroine who leaves behind the Bond series¡Ç fabled sexism and implied misogyny for the period of enlightenment and the era of #MeToo. And that¡Çs fine--with three more titles in Burnell¡Çs series of Stephanie Patrick novels, there¡Çs plenty of room for the character¡Çs development and growth. Just find a new director and screenwriter for future hang onto Blake Lively. Playing in 3049 theaters in the United States and Canada, ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É was expected by distributor Paramount Pictures to generate up $12 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend but is proving to be a major financial disappointment. With box office receipts of only $2. 8 million, the picture has set a record of sorts: It¡Çs the worst opening, ever, for a motion picture playing in wide release on more than 3000 screens, displacing the previous champion, a 2006 family comedy entitled ¡ÈHoot. ¡É It gets worse. Even considering the picture's humble financial showing during its premiere week, "The Rhythm Section" by its third week at the box office managed to attract only a truly dismal $25, 602 in total ticket sales across the entirety of North America, marking the steepest decline in box office business since the dystopian science fiction thriller "The Darkest Minds" in 2018. "The Rhythm Section" was at that point withdrawn by distributor Paramount Pictures from public release. Future plans for the film remain uncertain. Also featuring performances by Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown and filmed in Ireland and Spain, ¡ÈThe Rhythm Section¡É is--or was--rated R for violence and language throughout, and some drug use. Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020 Format: Prime Video It's not a bad movie but as soon as it starts it's all just too familiar. I mean we've seen this film so many times so you ask yourself what new stuff is this going to bring to the table. The answer, nothing really. Blake Lively is solid as always and does amazingly with what little she's handed. But she's really the only positive thing besides a few immersive action setpieces and some intriguing cinematography. The movie feels jumbled and a bit confusing and never really finds it's way. Its supposed to be a hyper realistic revenge tale but as it moves from scene to scene the plot looses focus and it's hard to know what the actual guiding direction is. At the base it's about a young woman whose family is killed on a flight because of a terrorist attack. She of course stupidly becomes a prostitute and drug addict even though she's top of her class at a prestigious college. She's contacted by someone investigating the incident which leads her to become an assassin and trains with a dominant and sexy Jude Law. Now that I'm regurgitating the plot I realize how dumb it is. The gorgeous and very talented Blake Lively looks like garbage in the movie and intentionally so but it feels a bit frustrating at times and the movie feels a tad bit uncomfortable and misogynistic at certain moments. All in all it's a bit confused but is decently entertaining. Despite some pacing issues the action sequences are engaging and the last one on a bus is edge of your seat. Overall it's all just overly mediocre. Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020 Format: Prime Video Jude Law is good, forget the rest. Espionage thriller? Really? Pretty weak. My expectation were higher. Trust me, 20 years of reviewing, this movie is really bad. Unbelievably bad. THE RHYTHM SECTION had potential. Where did it go? Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2020 Format: Prime Video There were some parts that were hard to follow, but the screenplay was, in general, enjoyable. But that might have had to do with the fact that the tickets were free due to an A/V sync issue when seeing Bombshell a month earlier. Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2020 Format: Prime Video it was a realistic action film! so tired of the unbelievable action hero bs this is for you.
