Le film avait mordu cruellement la poussière et même Bob Iger, PDG de Disney, le nouveau propriétaire de Fox, avait pointé du doigt Dark Phoenix comme l'un des grands coupables?des médiocres résultats financiers du studio. On peut quand même douter de la solidité de cet alibi du ??titre?fautif?? pour expliquer les plantades de productions par ailleurs aussi médiocres. En France, Dark Phoenix a bel et bien été retitré X-Men: Dark Phoenix, ce qui n'a pas empêché cet ultime opus de plafonner à?1, 36?million d'entrées dans l'Hexagone, soit le pire score jamais réalisé chez nous par un film de la saga officielle X-Men. The miss stings more than it otherwise might both due to what had been a solid winning streak for DC Films (save for Justice League, they had been on an artistic and commercial hitting streak since Wonder Woman) and because Warner Bros. had a pretty awful 2019. And since we now have no idea when that Gal Gadot/Chris Pine flick will actually open (it¡Çs still dated for June 5, but we¡Çll see), the Warner Media company is in a pickle. Anyway, Birds of Prey has at least earned $200 million worldwide, which is pretty decent for an R-rated female-led action movie when compared to the likes of the Underworld films, Atomic Blonde ($100 million on a $30 million budget in 2017) and Red Sparrow ($151 million/$69 million). Hell, coronavirus aside, had the film played in China and played even as well as Tomb Raider ($78. 4 million in 2018), we¡Çd be looking at around $285 million worldwide, which would absolutely put the film in ¡Èyeah, it¡Çs a hit¡É territory.
