Manzarek was a founding member of The Doors and known for his propulsive playing on hits like “Light My Fire, ” “L. Woman, ” “Riders On the Storm, ” “Break On Through (To the Other Side), ” “Hello, I Love You” and “The End. ” After Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek formed the mid-’70s band Nite City with vocalist Noah James and former Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison. He was also a noted producer, who famously worked with Los Angeles punk rock band X on its first four albums. Manzarek continued to play the music of The Doors later in his life along with Krieger, calling their version The Doors of the 21st Century. In 2012, the band was honored at the Sunset Strip Music Festival and Manzarek joined X for an intimate gig at the Roxy Theatre to play X’s 1980 debut “Los Angeles” in its entirety. Kreutzmann said that though he really only knew Manzarek for one day, even he could tell that there was something special about him. “Obviously, they’re very different people, but he almost had that (Jerry) Garcia thing, where you meet him and he’s really smart about music, but he also just knows a lot about a lot of stuff, ” he said, adding that the Doors’ music was fueled by Manzarek’s unique sound. “It’s just so distinctive. John (Densmore) says this in the movie, so I’m paraphrasing, but when you hear it, you definitely know it’s The Doors and that’s Ray Manzarek and that’s such a unique gift. There are so many musicians out there that are talented and great, but you can’t distinctively say within two or three bars, ‘Oh, that’s such and such, ’ but with Ray Manzarek, there’s just no question. ” While getting to know Densmore and Krieger during the interview process for the film, Kreutzmann said it was exciting to get to hear the small details behind some of the band’s biggest moments and the internal politics of The Doors. “I was editing ‘Riders On the Storm’ with John and he just started tapping to the beat and talking about that session when they wrote it and I was thinking, ‘This is the coolest Doors thing ever, ’” he said. “He was like ‘Yeah, Jim came in and Ray was sitting there saying we should do this …’ We were getting all these inside little bits that you don’t get to normally hear about. Like what was going on that day, who talked about what, and whose idea was this or that. It was just a little glimpse into how the band operated or what they call band head … how they all communicated with each other when it was just the four of them, so that was really interesting to learn. ” For those that miss out on the screening, Kreutzmann said he’s not sure when or where the film will be seen again. I just want the lifestyle. ’ I said: ‘Hopefully we’ll have both, man. ’” Manzarek and Morrison’s shared passion for films led them to hire Paul Ferrara, their friend and fellow student at UCLA film school, to follow The Doors around on their 1968 tour with a camera crew. More than 45 years later, the resulting Feast Of Friends DVD is finally set for release. For Manzarek, his period at film school came at a fortuitous time. “Dorothy and I and Jim were there for the great explosion of the art of the cinema. We were there for Ingmar Bergman’s films, Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray from India, François Truffaut. What a time. We were seeing all this stuff brand new. So we were in heaven. And we were smoking marijuana so we were doubly in heaven. And then we took LSD, so we knew then we were God. That was UCLA film school. ” Even in the face of Morrison’s self-destructive behaviour and catalogue of wilfully provocative acts that sabotaged The Doors, Manzarek was always Morrison’s most loyal defender. “Once he started drinking, something clicked. It’s like Cat On A Hot Tin Roof: the cat’s husband, played by Paul Newman, was telling his father why he drank so much. He couldn’t click that switch any more, but when he first started drinking, you’d click that switch and everything would just be coming up roses. Everything would be sunshine and lollipops and girls and fun. So I think that’s what happened to Jim. I think that once he started to drink, it just made that click because of his genetic make-up, and he became free of all of the restraints of everything and all the pressures of being in rock’n’roll. He was just free. And then as it got to the end, maybe it wasn’t clicking the same way. When he was in Paris it didn’t make that click. He just kept drinking and it did him in. It killed him. ” When asked how much he missed his friend, Manzarek says: “Every day, virtually. ” In_ Light My Fire_, Manzarek’s autobiographical ode to his time in The Doors, much of the book reads like a love story about Morrison. “Well, of course. It was. We were making music together. We were at UCLA. ” And what about referring to himself as Apollo to Morrison’s Dionysus? “Oh, I don’t say that any more, ” he replies gently. “I said it twenty-five years ago. I’ve grown up. It’s essentially a filmed gig, reuniting the two surviving Doors, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, on stage with assorted members of Foo Fighters, Jane’s Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots and more filling in for Jim Morrison and keyboardist Ray Manzarek. The hits comes thick and fast, tightly arranged and slickly performed, but this lineup of well-preserved mostly male musicians gives the show the bland atmosphere of a celebrity tribute band. The gig is dedicated to Manzarek, who died in 2013, and director Justin Kreutzmann pads out the gig footage with an interview the keyboardist gave and fresh input from Krieger and Densmore. The pair genially repeat anecdotes for the 1, 000th time: how they met Manzarek at a transcendental meditation course and how they were initially underwhelmed by Morrison, then an insecure, shy kid. Still, some of the stories deserve repeating, such as the one about the time Morrison dropped acid before going on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, and spent the first few minutes picking at the AstroTurf. In archive footage, the sound on mute, we see him later at that same gig, whirling and howling, beautiful and unhinged. That energy is not matched at the tribute gig, though guest singer Andrew Watt, with a preening performance of LA Woman, does a fair imitation of Morrison’s messiah complex, if not his appeal. Speaking to camera, Densmore glosses over his longrunning feud with Krieger over touring as the Doors without Morrison. At the time he is on record as saying: “It can’t be the Doors without Jim. It could be the Windows, the Hinges, I don’t care, as long as it’s not the Doors. ” Watching this film, you might agree. ?
