下記のようなエラーで起動しない場合には、hostnameの定義をしていないか、/etc/hostsなどで自サーバのhostnameの名前解決が出来ていない可能性がある。

- warning: unable to determine IP address of ' '
- error: no valid servers configured
- Fatal: error processing configuration　file '/etc/proftpd.conf'
