Free Download First. Free Download First cow. I've long had an idea of making a ZFS box that's low-power and low-cost. As in low-cost enough to talk non-technophile family or friends into getting, so we could swap remote backups. I've done some off-and-on research for a while, but haven't seen anyone take quite the same approach. I feel like I could use some more input before I dive in. I've long thought of something like a Raspberry Pi-based ZFS storage device, and recently the pieces seem to be coming into place for that to happen. Pieces like: Raspberry Pi 4 having more RAM and more importantly a USB bus that doesn't share a bus with the ethernet port Ubuntu server available for the Pi 4. It doesn't have USB boot yet, but it's stable. Even better, it has ZFS in the repos - so I don't have to use a non-mainline ZFS version or have to twiddle knobs on each kernel update. Native ZFS encryption was released in recent months 3d-printed parts becoming a reality for low-cost custom cases THE USE CASE This is for ZFS storage of things I don't want to lose. Think more along the lines of family photos and documents, not vast amounts of entertainment media. The idea is that this is a backup appliance that uses ZFS because this data really matters. Because it really matters, ZFS features such as checksumming against bitrot and ZFS send/receive (via sanoid) are valuable. And because this data matters, ONE DEVICE IS NOT ENOUGH. When data really matters, you want to follow the 3-2-1 rule [citation needed]. The multiple-copies-in-multiple-places angle has always been the toughest part about ZFS, because to do it right it so often takes a big budget. All the more so when most ZFS machines tend to be repurposed servers. So if we can build one that is low cost and low power, we can for example get friends or across the country to host one too. Perhaps we can get them to buy one and we can swap remote backups (you could even do that with a not-quite-fully-trusted other party with ZFS native encryption). You get the point - more nodes is better. Cost/size/power is often a barrier. Let's fix that by making something small. As far as storage size, I have run a ZFS machine for years and have less than half a TB of stuff that falls in this "really matters" territory for my family, so it doesn't necessarily need to be big. Think a two-disk mirror. Hey, if we need more space, why not deploy another machine if we can get it the cost low enough? Fewer points of failure is better, right? As far as performance, it frankly doesn't need much. It needs to store data securely, and slowly serve up files on occasion. Data on devices that really matters will get backed up in an automated way to them. The idea is to be robust, not to be speedy. Finally I want them to be able to send/receive between nodes. (Again, if you haven't checked out sanoid and syncoid, give them a look. We use them at work and they're awesome. I'm thinking I'll likely set up an OpenVPN or WireGuard server for the remote machines to connect to, so no pi's are exposed directly to the internet. Also, remote machines can be basically zero-config once they are connected to a lan with internet access. ) Any questions on the use case? If so, ask. I'd like to clear them up. In short, I'm hoping for a solution that really makes ZFS more scalable (as in more devices) for the hobbyist/home user as opposed to the server/business use case. DESIGN / QUESTIONS: With the use case out of the way, I want to gather advice on how to approach things. Feel free to ask more questions or offer other options. A few specific questions/design points I've given some thought to include: Raspberry Pi to disk connectivity - There's no native SATA ports on Raspberry Pis. I see three main options, and I'm leaning towards the first. What thoughts or experience do you have? A USB-to-SATA cable like the one in the link. Possibly the best performance per cost. USB -packaged drives ("unshucked", in r/datahoarder parlance). I don't really like the idea, but it could be both easy and low-cost, though likely at the cost of some performance. A SATA hat for the Pi. I've seen one or two, but haven't seen any stellar reviews that make me think it's the best option for this design. ZFS configuration - I'm thinking of a two-disk mirror. That could easily yield above 10 TB of usable space these days. 3. 5" HDDs are a lot cheaper per TB, but if you wanted to go with a smaller/cleaner form factor, you could use 2. 5" SSDs. Any other options I should strongly consider for ZFS topology? Case - I've seen a couple of designs for 3D-printed cases, such as this one or this one, but none that really stand out as fitting my use case. Less "cool-frankenstein-tech-project" and more "something-innocuous-your-mom-would-be-ok-stashing-behind-the-couch". If feels like a 3D-printed case could be the finishing touch that makes this machine small and approachable rather than a science project. I've done some searching at thingiverse and yeggi, yet haven't found one I like. Know of a good design? Or a good reason to consider something other than a 3D-printed case? Networking - Should I consider something other than having remote machines connect over OpenVPN or WireGuard back to my lan? Device backup to the NAS - It's easy enough to set up a samba share. Any other thoughts on how to back up files that matter on end-user devices to such a device? I've addressed most of my devices here at home, but I'm always willing to look at alternatives. Really rsync-type functionality is all that's needed - not a complex backup product like Borg. And I don't necessarily want to sign myself up to set up any devices for users on the other end, so the more end-user configurable, the better. Power - Any appropriate wall wart could be put into a custom case easily enough - along with a powered USB hub to power the drives, if needed. Any thoughts there? Community interest - Is anyone else out there fired up about the idea, or want to see any design files that come out of this effort?.. am I reinventing the wheel? If so, please show me the wheel shop! TL;DR: I want to make a low-cost, low-power ZFS device to take ZFS to the masses (or at least make it easier for me to deploy more nodes and help folks really back up data well). I have a few ideas, but want more input.
