The final girl has been a staple of the genre for decades, but in 2019 female solidarity is how you survive. Ms. Wilson is a newsroom project manager. Dec. 16, 2019 Credit. Kirsty Griffin/Universal Pictures This essay contains spoilers for the 2019 remake of “Black Christmas. ” Before a masked killer invades the sorority house in “Black Christmas, ” directed by Sophia Takal and co-written by Ms. Takal and April Wolfe, the movie shows three Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters happily chatting over holiday dinner preparations. One asks her friends what their favorite animals are, and Marty (Lily Donoghue) chooses the ant. You cant kill an ant, she explains, because theyre all extensions of the others. This statement turns profound at the films climax, when a harried band of women crash into a frat house like Marvels Avengers, stopgap weapons at the ready. They have arrived just in time to rescue the protagonist, Riley (Imogen Poots) from being murdered by a lackey to the man who raped her. In any other slasher film, Riley would be the final girl ? the lone young woman clever enough to outlast her peers and scrappy enough to kill the killer (or killers. But in this 2019 remake of the 1974 horror film of the same name ? and the second reimagining following a 2006 version ? nine other sorority members join her in solidarity to vanquish an army of misogynists. The message is simple: Women need to band together to take down the patriarchy. The original “Black Christmas” features one of the horror genres first final girls. This trope, first outlined by Carol J. Clover in her book “Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, ” typically meets the following criteria: The final girl is virginal or uninterested in dating. She is aware of impending danger before her peers. And she is smart and competent in ways her flirty, flighty friends usually are not, able to rig a whole house with booby traps (as in the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street”) or turn a wire hanger into a weapon (the original “Halloween”. While the final girl had more agency than most female characters in her 70s and 80s heyday (when the women of slasher films were most often topless or dead) she was alienated from other female characters ? so much so that she often even had a masculine name. The final girl, like any male action hero, ultimately triumphed alone. The sisterly alliance in the newest “Black Christmas” is even more meaningful given its multiple final girl red herrings. Rileys closest Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters are Marty, Jesse (Brittany OGrady) and Kris (Aleyse Shannon. None of these four women with androgynous names pursue sex, and all are smart, capable characters with unique personalities and interests. But none of them become the final girl. Perhaps most subversively, Kris is a radical feminist hellbent on ridding their college of oppression, including Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes) a misogynistic instructor and an adviser to the evil fraternity Delta Kappa Omicron. She urges Riley, who was met with incredulity from the campus police after reporting her rape, to further challenge campus sexism by signing a petition against Professor Gelson. Kris would normally be a parody, easily mocked and murdered for her alarmist insolence. Here, she is a character to be taken seriously. The patriarchy at Hawthorne College is depicted as especially insidious. And what a patriarchy it is. The frat boys of Delta Kappa, it turns out, are collectively killing sorority sisters in a grab for the halcyon days of male dominance. Led by Professor Gelson and possessed by the spirit of Hawthornes malevolent founder, they believe that womens “true nature” is subservience, while men are “alphas. ” It seems hardly incidental, then, that Professor Gelson, with his eccentric accent and fondness for Camille Paglia, calls to mind the polarizing psychology professor Jordan Peterson. In his best-selling book “12 Rules for Life, ” Mr. Peterson posits that an oppressive patriarchy does not exist. He compares the mating rituals of lobsters, whose females are attracted to male aggressors at the expense of male weaklings, to those of humans. In a blog post on his personal website hes written, “Its been a truism among anthropologists and biologically oriented psychologists for decades that all human societies face two primary tasks: regulation of female reproduction (so the babies dont die, you see) and male aggression (so that everyone doesnt die. ” The solution: heterosexual monogamy, or women coupling with men for the greater good. Mr. Petersons thinking reaches its logical extreme in “Black Christmas, ” where a group of fed-up young men exact violence against the women who denied them their sexual supremacy. Though in that blog post Mr. Peterson says he does not excuse or glorify male violence, such bio-essentialist thinking ? that women and men need discrete, gendered roles for society to function, and that those roles naturally empower men ? is echoed by Professor Gelson and the Delta Kappas. “Dont you see? ” Professor Gelson asks during the final showdown. “Woman is inextricably tied to man. ” But it is her ties to women, rather than her alienation from them, that gives Riley the strength to survive the film. In an early scene, Marty, Kris and Jesse don “Mean Girls”-esque sexy Santa outfits to perform a number at the Delta Kappa talent show, but Riley feels uncomfortable joining them, knowing her rapist will be in the audience. Kris goads her into the performance: “Be a fighter, ” she urges, “for your sisters. ” At first, it seems like a bizarre exchange ? how does a provocative skit empower a rape survivor? ? until the groups hidden motive becomes clear. They perform a parody of “Up on the Housetop, ” indicting the fraternity for their date rape reputation. (“Up on the housetop click click click, you slipped me a roofie and then your [expletive. ”) In one of the most enjoyable scenes of the film, Riley becomes a “fighter” through comedic song and dance, with her sisters by her side. In the ensuing showdown between the sexes, its important to note that the women take up arms only for survival; the rest of their combat is rhetorical. As the film ends, Riley tells Kris: “You were right. I should have been fighting this whole time. ” Riley realizes she has the strength to speak up for herself, even in the face of an administration that did not expel her rapist, and the police officers who did not believe her. She can reassert her power, rather than make herself smaller. The women of “Black Christmas” do not just take down one campus villain, they quash an entire patriarchal army ? an impossible feat for Riley, our would-be final girl, on her own. When Kris and the other women barge into the frat house before that final blood bath, Kris announces, “You messed with the wrong sisters. ” She is right. Sorority sisters become indistinguishable from radical feminist sisters. Together, these women are unstoppable. Lena Wilson ( lenalwilson) is a newsroom project manager. The film stars Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O'Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, and Cary Elwes. [9] 10] Development of the project began in June 2019, when Jason Blum announced that he would produce the film through his studio Blumhouse Productions. On the same day, Sophia Takal was announced as director and co-writer, and principal photography began soon after, lasting for 27 days in New Zealand. Black Christmas was released in North American theaters on December 13, 2019 by Universal Pictures, coinciding with Friday the 13th. [11] It received mixed reviews from critics and has grossed 18. 5 million worldwide. Plot [ edit] While walking home, Hawthorne College student Lindsey is impaled with an icicle by a trio of masked figures. The rest of Hawthorne College is preparing for the Christmas holiday break. Riley Stone, a student at the College's MKE sorority, is still struggling to move on from being raped by AKO fraternity president Brian Huntley (which no one besides her close friends believed her about despite Brian being forced to leave. Her sorority sisters Kris, Marty, Jesse, and Helena are taking part in the AKO talent show with a dance choreographed by Riley. Riley gives Helena her lucky comb. Meanwhile, Kris has drawn the ire of the AKO fraternity and Riley and Marty's lecturer Professor Gelson following a petition from her requesting that university founder and notorious misogynist Calvin Hawthorne's bust be moved away from the main building and another requesting Gelson be fired due to his refusal to teach books written by women. While at her job at a coffee shop, Riley learns that Brian will be back in town to oversee the talent show. She also meets Landon, a friendly boy from the AKO fraternity who takes a liking to her. The group arrives at the AKO fraternity where Riley catches a glimpse of a strange ritual involving new pledges for AKO and a black goo leaking out of the Calvin Hawthorne bust. She also stumbles across Helena about to be sexually assaulted by one of the frat boys. Riley intervenes and sends a tipsy Helena home. Riley takes Helena's place in the talent show and upon seeing Brian in the crowd, performs a song with her sorority sisters blasting the rape culture at the fraternity and stating that Brian did rape Riley. The girls leave in high spirits and Riley bonds with Landon. Meanwhile, back at the MKE house, Helena is abducted by Lindsey's attacker. The next day the girls start to receive threatening DMs from a Calvin Hawthorne account similar to what Lindsey had received before she was murdered. Meanwhile, sorority sister Fran is also killed by the masked man. Concerned that Helena has seemingly not gone home to her parents as planned, Riley alerts campus security who are apathetic and assume Helena has run off with a boyfriend. After a strange encounter with Gelson outside the AKO fraternity, where she finds a list of the MKE girls among some papers he dropped, Riley returns home. Marty and her boyfriend Nate have an argument and she kicks him out of the house that night while Riley and Kris argue over Kris' uploading the talent show video online and Riley now fears retaliation from members of the fraternity. Jesse goes to the attic to get some Christmas lights and is murdered, her body left in the attic. Riley, Kris, and Marty receive more threatening messages before being attacked by a bow-wielding assailant who injures Marty. The girls lock themselves in a room and Riley ventures out to retrieve her phone. Meanwhile, Kris goes to the attic to warn Jesse and discovers her body. Nate arrives back at the house looking to apologize and is promptly murdered. Riley then uses Nate's car keys to kill the masked man. She reunites with Kris and Marty and they are attacked by two other masked men. Marty is gravely wounded but manages to buy Riley and Kris enough time to hide in the kitchen before dying. The pair overpower and kill the attacker. They remove his mask after being alarmed that they are covered in black goo instead of blood. Riley identifies him as an AKO pledge she saw at the ritual and is alarmed by a strange look in the pledge's eyes. The pair escape the house in Nate's car and Riley theorizes that Hawthorne, who was known for dabbling in black magic, is responsible for the killings via his bust and the black goo it emitted. Kris shoots down the idea and suggests they go to the police but Riley demands they go to the AKO fraternity to fight. They argue and Riley heads off to confront the frat herself. She encounters Landon and enlists him to help her enter the fraternity. Meanwhile, Kris stumbles across Lindsey's sorority, which had angered AKO for not wanting to take part in the talent show. She discovers Lindsey's sorority sisters are also being attacked by other AKO pledges and manages to rescue them. At the AKO house, Riley and Landon break in, but Landon is cornered by the frat brothers who convince him to be a pledge. Riley witnesses the Hawthrone bust leak the black goo before discovering Helena, who is tied up but still alive. Attempting to rescue Helena, Riley unties the bonds securing Helena's hands behind her back but is suddenly knocked unconscious by an AKO member. Riley awakens to find herself sitting tied up on a chair. She is confronted by Gelson, Brian, and the AKO frat boys who have inducted Landon as a pledge. Gelson explained that after Kris forced the bust's relocation to the fraternity they discovered Hawthorne's plan, involving a spell and the black goo, to keep unruly women in check. The goo allows the spirit of Hawthorne to possess the fraternity's pledges and send them out to murder any women that stepped out of line. It is also revealed that Helena has been secretly working with the fraternity and stole several items from her sisters that allowed the possessed pledges to easily locate their targets. One of the pledges murders Helena despite her willingness to be a "good woman" to the frat as a show of power to Riley. Brian forces Riley to bow to him, but she plans to attack him; at the same moment Kris and Lindsey's surviving sorority sisters enter and fight the fraternity. Riley overpowers and kills Brian. She then smashes the Hawthorne bust. Kris sets Gelson on fire and the women and Landon escape, locking the frat brothers inside and leaving them to burn to death. As the traumatized group watch the frat house burn, Riley watches with newfound bravery. In a post-credit scene, the cat that was the MKE sisters' pet is seen licking the black liquid. [17] 18] Also that month, Cary Elwes was added to the cast. [19] Director Takal worked extensively to make this vision of Black Christmas as feminist as she could, stating in an interview, I wanted to make a movie where instead of feeling objectified or watched from a distance, the audience felt seen. 20] It is the first Black Christmas film in which Bob Clark was not involved in the production process, as Clark had died in 2007. [21] Bob Clark had produced and directed the original Black Christmas (1974) and had been an executive producer on the 2006 remake of the same name. Unlike the previous two version of Black Christmas, the remake was rated PG-13 by the MPAA, a rating Takal sought in hopes of making it accessible to new audiences, especially young women who were interested in horror, and opening up discussions on major issues like sexual assault, 22] although she was ready to fully commit to utilizing the higher R rating if the ratings b
Expecting a macabre black comedy as hinted by the numerous trailers, I was disappointed to discover it was a tired old sexist diatribe with, no doubt, a bunch of horny underage frat rats in a frat/cult that was dedicated to the subjugation of women the world over. To further its Expecting a macabre black comedy as hinted by the numerous trailers, I was disappointed to discover it was a tired old sexist diatribe with, no doubt, a bunch of horny underage frat rats in a frat/cult that was dedicated to the subjugation of women the world over. To further its message, mind controlled frat pledges are out to invade sorority houses and murder as many "sisters" as possible. Lame. Real lame. But let's consider our average Greek student - I went to college with these creeps, and all I ever got and continue to "get" is that the Greek organizations are nothing but party houses, rape parties and a playground for ultra rich little. who are grooming themselves to be politicians (GOP) bankers, lawyers and other such careers, while the women practice the art of being incredibly rude and snide to outsiders and spend weekends throwing up and not remembering what they did. Then it's rich husband material for them. So, in a clash between a fraternity and a sorority, and tough luck if you were a Greek, you know how you acted, I would prefer both sides lose. In a way they do. This movie is beyond cliche, wouldn't scare a sparrow, and its feminist diatribe is totally unconvincing and frankly very insulting to those of us men who are not misogynistic pigs. "Animal House" couldn't have portrayed a frat or sorority house any more accurately. This is beyond Mystery Science Theater/ Sharknado" stupid. It tries to be truly scary, to make a salient and societal point, and just comes across as the kind of horror movie you might expect a bright girl in a Girl Scout troop to make. Probably the worst picture of 2019. … Expand.

"Let the slay ride begin. ? Tagline The first remake of the 1974 slasher film Black Christmas, released in 2006. Much like in the original, a group of sorority sisters are celebrating Christmas. But the killer who crashes the party has more than a passing familiarity with their house: he used to live there, and he's going to relive the deaths of his parents. Another remake was released on December 13, 2019. The remake provides examples of: Abusive Parents: Billy's mother and stepfather kept Billy locked away and beaten for years, all because the poor kid had jaundice and is related to his dead father. Anyone Can Die: A lot of the sorority girls get an equal amount of screen time and development, leaving the audience to try and guess who will be the final girl. When the killing ensues, the girls are all picked off at random. In the end, every sorority girl is dead except for Kelli. Arc Words. family now. These words persist in the heads of the Lenz children. Asshole Victim: It's hard to feel sorry for Mrs. Lenz and her lover since their abuse created a monster like Billy in the first place. Almost every single sorority girl plays this completely straight as well, with most of them ranging from "kinda bitchy" to "utterly unlikeable bitch. Bad Santa: Billy briefly wears a Santa outfit to escape the asylum. Bare Your Midriff: Lauren's outfit, which is basically her pajamas. Barrier-Busting Blow: Billy attacks Leigh through a wall. Big Bad Duumvirate: Billy Lenz and his sister Agnes are tag teaming their murders. Big Sister Instinct: Leigh, although she's an older example of the sister than usual, being about fifteen years older than Clair. Bloodier and Gorier: Very much so compared to the original. Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Kelli, Melissa, and Heather, who also happen to be listed first in this order in the credits. Only Kelli survives. Body Bag Trick: The not-so-dead Billy and Agnes pull this off in the hospital by the end. Child by Rape: Agnes, conceived by her mother raping her brother Billy. Creepy Doll: Agnes gets one as a Christmas gift in her childhood, and it shows up throughout the film. Crosscast Role: Adult Agnes was played by a man. And it shows. Cruel and Unusual Death: The candy cane shiv, for starters. Curiosity Killed the Cast: Megan is lured into the attic by footsteps and a snow globe tune, while Dana is lured under the crawlspace by rustling noises. Danger Takes a Backseat: Billy kills both Heather and Eve in their cars. Death by Irony: You're my cookie, and I could gobble you up. Death by Sex: The Santa is killed just as he's about to be get it on with a nurse. Disproportionate Retribution: Billy's mother and her boyfriend murdering Billy's father. Also, the abuse she inflicts on Billy, just because he's jaundiced. The Dog Bites Back: The whole reason Billy was locked up in the loony bin in the first place. And boy, did he bite hard. Does Not Like Shoes: Billy and Agnes are never seen wearing shoes, despite the movie taking place at Christmas night. Drop the Hammer: Billy's biological father is beat to death with one. Evil Matriarch: Billy's mother, later devolves into Ax-Crazy. Evil Phone / Harassing Phone Call: Like the original, the sorority sisters get creepy phone calls from the killer. Eye Scream: All over the goddamn place, that at a point Agnes makes a Christmas tree, with eyes as the Christmas bulbs. Expy: Kelli is an expy of the original's Jess. Lauren is an expy of Margot Kidder 's Barb (alcoholic and bitchy) Final Girl: Kelli is the final survivor after Leigh is killed off. A God Am I: One of Billy's fellow asylum inmates apparently has messianic delusions: Orderly: Happy birthday. Gory Discretion Shot: The deaths of the Santa, Heather, and the morgue attendant. Gross-Up Close-Up: Want to see what a head looks like after it gets sliced by an ice skate? This movie's got you covered. You also see one of the victim's eyes forcibly plucked out while their head is covered with a bag. Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Lauren drinks the most out of the sorority. Hate Sink: Constance Lenz is Billy 's mother, who locks him in the attic after he witnesses her kill his father. She leaves him there for years while living a seemingly-idyllic life with her new lover. After learning that said lover is infertile, she rapes Billy to produce a daughter. These years of abuse lead Billy to snap and murder her, making her indirectly responsible for the film's carnage. Horror Doesn't Settle for Simple Tuesday: Billy murdered his family on Christmas. Years later, the sorority house becomes a slaughterhouse on Christmas. Hostile Weather: A snowstorm and the accidents it's causing make it so the authorities won't be able to reach them for several hours. I'm a Humanitarian: Billy and Agnes. Two words: Skingerbread men. Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Ms. Mac's death is by an icicle through her mouth and out the back of her head. How Billy ultimately dies, falling over the hospital railing and onto a Christmas tree with a pointy top. Impromptu Tracheotomy: The death of the sanitarium guard. Improbable Weapon User: Billy fatally impales his stepfather through the eye with an icicle-shaped ornament and strangles his mother to death with a string of Christmas lights. Improvised Weapon: Christmas ornaments, a rolling pin, a candy cane, an ice skate, a gardening claw, the list goes on. Ironic Nursery Tune: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies and a few others. Surprisingly effective. Jerkass: Kyle, thanks to cheating on Kelli by having sex with Megan. His response after he's caught? Fuck all you bitches. Heather is also rather unpleasant, Ms. Mac even comments on it as she's getting the car ready. She does have a few Jerkass Has a Point moments though, as it does make sense to try and leave, as the people the others hoping to rescue are already dead, and it could be considered bit tasteless to leave out gifts for a killer as a holiday tradition. Kick the Dog: Billy's mother crushing the "Baby's First Christmas" bulb, and later telling him that Santa was shot down by the Russians. Kick the Son of a Bitch: It is immensely satisfying to see Billy getting revenge on his stepfather and mother for all the things they've done to him. The former being impaled through the head with a Christmas tree topping and the latter being strangled and brutally beaten to death by a rolling pin. Kill the Cutie: Melissa, the only main sister besides Kelli who is halfway decent. Leigh is also a decent character, but isn't one of the sisters. Madwoman in the Attic: Billy's mother despised his father, and by extension him (the fact that he looked like That Yellow Bastard only added to that hatred. She and her lover wound up murdering Mr. Lenz, and kept Billy locked up in the attic, presumably only giving him the bare minimum to survive. Made of Plasticine: It apparently runs in the family, as both Billy's stepfather and Billy himself are Impaled with Extreme Prejudice, the latter by a christmas tree, no less. Ms. Mac is also impaled, clean through her skull, by an icicle. Magical Defibrillator: Inverted. Kelli kills Agnes with one. Man on Fire: Billy and, less severely, Agnes end up in flames when they don't escape the burning sorority in time. Men Are the Expendable Gender: Subverted to the extreme, a rare feat. While the film has a quite a few male casualties, including Billys Dad, Billys Stepfather, The Asylum Santa, A Security Guard, A Mortician, and Kyle, the body count in this film is almost entirely made up of the female characters Melissa Kitt, Heather Lee Fitzgerald, Dana Mathis, Lauren Hannon, Clair Crosby, Megan Helms, Eve Agnew, Leigh Colvin, Ms. Mac, Billys Mom, and Agnes. Mythology Gag: Several, like most remakes: the victims ending up with bags over their heads, the attic being the most important part of the house for the killers, and Andrea Martin as Mrs. MacHenry, who was Phyl in the original Black Christmas. Neck Snap: Leigh dies by Agnes snapping her neck. Nerd Glasses: Eve wears thick-framed glasses. Not Quite Dead: Billy and Agnes survive the sorority house burning down. Subverted in the UK cut, where Billy is, in fact, horribly burned in the fire, and later dies on the operating table. Offscreen Teleportation: Justified, Billy and Agnes frequently use the vents and crawlspaces in the house, and again in the hospital. Off with His Head. Eve's is found decapitated in her car while Melissa's death is more of a partial example (and by ice skate of all things. Organ Dodge: Kelli stabs Agnes in her glass eye. Parental Incest: Billy's mother rapes him in an insane attempt to impregnate herself. She succeeds. Peek-a-Bangs: Agnes favours this look with the left part of her face obscured. Peek-a-Boo Corpse: Eve is found decapitated. The Pen Is Mightier: Clair's death, and the first instance of Eye Scream in the film. Pet the Dog: Billy's dad was the only person who was ever nice to him. Rape as Backstory: Obsessed with having another, better child, Mrs. Lenz, after her lover passes out during a bout of drunken sex, goes up to the attic where she keeps her deformed son Billy, and rapes him, successfully giving birth to a daughter nine months later. Suffice it to say, this contributed greatly to Billy's already steady descent into insanity. Reality Is Unrealistic: Despite the unrealistic nature of Ms. Mac's death with an icicle piercing her eye and popping out of the back of her head, this is actually medically accurate. According to producer James Wong, a likely story is that Ms. Mac played ice hockey in 1962 and was struck in that particular area, had a headache for a few days and recovered without having it checked out allowing the area to soften and become a weak point for the icicle to pierce. It is also worth noting that icicles have been known to kill people just by falling on them. Red Herring: Eve, who is obsessed with Billy Lenz, to the point of taking his old room in the sorority house, is initially implied to be the second kille

(USA/International) Release date October?11,?1974 Running time 98 minutes [1] Country Canada Language English Budget 620, 000 Box office 4. 1 million Black Christmas is a 1974 Canadian slasher film produced and directed by Bob Clark, and written by A. Roy Moore. It stars Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin, Marian Waldman, Lynne Griffin and John Saxon. The story follows a group of sorority sisters who receive threatening phone calls and are eventually stalked and murdered by a deranged killer during the Christmas season. It is the first film in the Black Christmas series. Inspired by the urban legend " The babysitter and the man upstairs " and a series of murders that took place in the Westmount section of Montreal, Quebec, Moore wrote the screenplay under the title Stop Me. The filmmakers made numerous alterations to the script, primarily the shifting to a university setting with young adult characters. It was shot in Toronto in 1974 on an estimated budget of 620, 000, and was distributed by Warner Bros. in North America. Black Christmas was released on October 11, 1974, in Canada and December 20 in the United States under the title Silent Night, Evil Night. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews, but it has since received critical re-appraisal, with film historians noting it for being one of the earliest slasher films. [2] It is also praised for concluding without revealing the identity of its villain, as well as serving as an influence on John Carpenter 's Halloween (1978. Aside from its earning a cult following [3] since its release, a novelization written by Lee Hays was published in 1976. Plot [ edit] An unseen and disoriented man climbs up into the attic of a sorority house, where the tenants are celebrating with a Christmas party. One of the girls, Jess, answers an obscene phone call from a mentally unstable man who is implied to call the house regularly. She summons her fellow students into the room, where they listen as the caller screams and curses them on the phone. When one of the girls, foul-mouthed Barb, takes the phone from Jess, she incites the caller, who in turn promises to kill her. Barb argues with a younger student, Clare Harrison, who implies that the caller could be a serial rapist, before Clare returns to her bedroom to finish packing for Christmas break. The disoriented man lures Clare into her closet, where he suffocates her with a plastic dress bag. He moves her body to the attic. The following morning, Mr. Harrison arrives at the school to pick up his daughter, but she fails to show up to their agreed meeting place. He quickly makes his way to the sorority house, where the housemother, Mrs. MacHenry, is surprised by Clare's absence. Meanwhile, Jess meets her boyfriend, Peter, a neurotic music student. She explains she is pregnant and planning to get an abortion, angering Peter, who attempts to intimidate her. In town, Mr. Harrison, accompanied by Barb and one of the other girls, Phyllis Carlson, attempt to report Clare as missing, while Jess quickly tells Clare's boyfriend Chris about Clare's sudden disappearance. They learn that another local girl named Janis Quaife has also seemingly vanished while walking home from school. After putting a drunken Barb to bed, Mr. Harrison, Chris, Jess, and Phyllis help search for Janis in a nearby park where she allegedly disappeared, hoping to turn up some sign of Clare. Meanwhile, Mrs. Mac plans to leave for her sister's home, only to be lured up into the attic, where she discovers Clare's body. The killer throws a crane hook into her face, hanging and killing her. In the park, Janis's disfigured body is found by the police and Jess returns home, while the search continues for Clare. Jess answers another obscene phone call and decides to file a report with the police, only for Peter to appear and surprise her. He attempts to persuade her into marriage for the sake of their child, but Jess adamantly refuses. Peter leaves in an emotional state, while Lieutenant Kenneth Fuller arrives to bug the telephone. A group of choir children arrive on the house's stoop to sing Christmas carols, distracting Jess. The killer enters Barb's room and murders her with a glass figurine; Barb's cries for help are drowned out by the singing children. One of the women in charge of the children ushers them away, having learned of Janis's murder. Jess experiences another unnerving phone call, in which the caller restates part of her argument with Peter. Lieutenant Fuller theorizes that Peter could be responsible, due to the caller's knowledge of the argument and his own mental fragility, but Jess doubts this. Moments later, Phyllis enters Barb's room and is ambushed by the killer, who murders her off-screen. Jess gets another obscene phone call, in which the killer alludes to some sort of transgression between two children named Agnes and Billy. The call is long enough to be traced by Graham, a telephone company employee, and Sergeant Nash instructs Jess to leave the house immediately, as the calls have been traced to be coming from within the house. Concerned for Barb and Phyllis, Jess arms herself with a poker and ventures upstairs, where she discovers Barb and Phyllis's maimed figures. The killer appears and pursues Jess through the house; Jess locks herself in the cellar, only for Peter to appear outside one of the windows. He smashes the window to get to Jess, who proceeds to bludgeon him with the poker, assuming he is the killer. The police arrive moments later, alerted by Jess's screams. They discover her barely conscious in the basement, with Peter's bloody remains next to her. They put Jess to bed and discuss the murders, unaware of the bodies of Clare and Mrs. MacHenry still in the attic. Jess is left in the house to rest, with a policeman standing outside. The killer climbs down from the attic as Jess sleeps in a nearby room. The house's telephone begins to ring, leaving Jess's fate unknown as the credits roll. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. March 2019) Development [ edit] Canadian Roy Moore wrote the screenplay entitled Stop Me, 4] based on " The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs " urban legend. [5] 6] Moore also claimed to have been inspired by a series of strangulation murders that occurred during the holiday season in the Westmount area of Montreal between 1968 and 1971. [7. additional citation(s) needed] Film producers Harvey Sherman and Richard Schouten had Timothy Bond rewrite the script to give it a university setting. [5] 8] Clark, who had felt the original script was too much of a straightforward slasher film, made several alterations in dialogue, 5] and also incorporated humorous elements into the film, particularly the drunkenness of Barb, and Mrs. Mac, who Clark based on his aunt. [4] Clark felt that college and high school students had not been depicted with "any sense of reality" in American film, and that he intended to capture the "astuteness" of young adults: College students?even in 1974?are astute people. They're not fools. It's not all 'bikinis, beach blankets, and] bingo. 4] Casting [ edit] The central cast of Black Christmas (clockwise from left to right) Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, John Saxon, and Margot Kidder Olivia Hussey, who had previously garnered international fame for her role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli 's Romeo and Juliet (1968) signed on to appear in the film after being told by a psychic that she would "make a film in Canada that would earn a great deal of money. 4] Clark sought Keir Dullea to play the role of Peter based on his performance as Dave Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968. 4] The role of Mrs. Mac was offered to Bette Davis, 5] who declined the part. [4] Margot Kidder was cast in the role of Barb, and said she had been attracted to the character "because she was wild and out of control" and not a "conventional leading" part. [4] For the role of Clare Harrison, whose murder jump-starts the film's plot, Toronto native Lynne Griffin was cast after her mother, who was also her casting agent at the time, got her an audition. Griffin would later go on to star in Curtains (1983) and in the acclaimed television series Wind at My Back (1996?2001. 9] Gilda Radner was offered the role of Phyllis Carlson. She accepted the part, but dropped out one month before filming began owing to Saturday Night Live commitments, and was replaced by Andrea Martin. [5] 4] The role of Lieutenant Fuller was originally given to Edmond O'Brien. Upon his arrival to the set, however, the producers realized he would be unable to fulfill the duties required of the part due to his failing health (stemming from Alzheimer's disease. 10] John Saxon, who had read the script prior, was called by the producers who offered him the role. He accepted, and had to arrive in Toronto from New York City within two days to begin shooting. [4] Filming [ edit] Black Christmas was shot on location in Toronto in the winter of 1973?74. The house featured in the film had been discovered by Clark while scouting for locations, and its owners agreed to lease the home for the production. [4] Additional photography was completed on the University of Toronto campus. [4] According to John Saxon, Clark had meticulously drawn out storyboards with key sh

IStock Editors Note: This post originally ran on December 22, 2017 Whether you believe the Christmas tradition is rooted in the pagan holiday Saturnalia, a baby born in swaddling clothing or shamans getting high on magic mushrooms ( yes, it is a thing) we can all agree that Christmas has become more than a simple religious remembrance and has evolved into a cultural ritual. Because of this, there are stark differences between black Americas celebration of the season and the rest of the countrys. We decided to walk you through some of these cultural disparities just in case you couldnt recognize the holiday being supported on the black side of town. The Christmas Season When it comes to Black Christmas, the holiday begins much later than the traditional Caucasian season. The white Christmas season begins immediately after the Dallas Cowboys lose on Thanksgiving Day. They barely give their turkeys time to digest before they wander to the mall to get their asses kicked in the Black Friday mixed martial arts tournament to buy discounted gifts for their loved ones. This is not to say that black people dont wade into the Black Friday morass, because as a culture, we have been taught to value a good sale. But the reason black people always win the Walmart kickboxing matches over dirt-cheap flat-screen televisions is partly that?unlike our unseasoned shopping counterparts?we arent purchasing those presents for our loved ones. Thats our ? 47-inch plasma! Yall dont have enough invested in the fight! In fact, according to a 2017 Gallup Poll that was never conducted, 22 percent of all Christmas traffic is black people taking advantage of holiday sales for their own benefit. Black Christmas shoppers purchase most of their gifts during a little-known holiday called “Christmas-Bonus Paycheck Day. ” This is when we start decking the halls with boughs of Holly, because this is when the true Christmas season begins. (Also, we dont know exactly who “Holly” is or why shes hanging out in our hallway. But if shes thinking about stealing our brand-new 47-inch, she will get decked. While you might think it is a shame that black people celebrate Noel on C. P. Time, you should also be aware that the Black Christmas season traditionally extends past Christmas Day. This, again, is because of sale-related issues, which can be explained by the next part of Black Christmas: presents. Gifts Black Christmas is a very present-centric holiday. After all, logic would dictate that the best way to commemorate the birth of a child sent to teach the world that joy, peace and happiness are found within is through the receiving of presents. Black people eschew all that gobbledygook about the charity and the joy of giving. Thats white-people nonsense. Christmas is about the joy of receiving. w hich brings us back to the Christmas season. The gift-giving part of Black Christmas lasts until well after Dec. 25. Most black children expect to unwrap the lesser presents on Christmas morning, but the real gifts come when their parents hit the after-Christmas sales. Or the New Years Day sales. Or?in some cases?Christmas-gift receiving extends into a bigger and more substantial black holiday when black parents receive their de facto reparations for working all year, in a holiday tradition called “tax time. ” On Christmas morning, there will be black children all across America playing with remote-controlled cars with no batteries and staring at bicycles with no wheels. They wont be disappointed because they know they will receive the D batteries and bicycle tires sometime between Christmas Day and April 15. Santa Claus Santa Claus is one of the hallmarks of white Christmas. White kids believe in old St. Nick until they are 22 or 23 years old. Black children, on the other hand, have about 16-17 minutes of wondrous folly before they realize that the idea of a benevolent white man bringing joy to their lives is highly questionable. This is because white people are much better at accepting bullshit than their Negro counterparts. As soon as a black kid can talk, he or she has too many questions that cant be answered by the Santa fairy tale, such as: How did Santa get in our third-story apartment when we dont have a chimney, Mommy? Shouldnt you be looking for a new alarm system? So he landed on the roof with 12 reindeer, and the pit bull next door didnt even notice? Why did he eat the cookies when Grandmas sweet potato pie was right there? Dont you think its wrong for elves to make all these toys for free? Isnt that kinda like slavery? ElvesLivesMatter. Santa Claus aint got no D batteries? This is why black parents always end the charade and let their children know that, like Chicagos “ gang thugs, ” All Lives Matter and trickle-down economics, Santa is a figment of the white imagination. Music There are no Black Christmas carols. We have Christmas songs. Many of them are simply remixes that put some funk in songs that white people already made because we dont understand the white carols anyway. Seventy-three percent of black children spent most of their childhoods believing that the seminal song of white Christmas was entitled “Jing-o Bells. ” We have no idea who “Hawk the Harold” is, how he became an angel, or why hes only singing glory to one of Jay-Z and Beyoncés twins. (Shouldnt it be “glory to the newborn king and queen? ”. Our Christmas carols often have nothing to do with Jesus. Most of them are about the need for sex and companionship on this glorious day. When all I want for Christmas is you, we soon realize that Christmas just aint Christmas without the one you love. After all, what do the lonely do at Christmas? These are the pertinent questions. These songs, however, are just warnings of what can happen if you forget to shake a hand and make a friend. In fact, “Silent Night” by the Temptations, the greatest Christmas song ever made, is basically a remixed version of a white Christmas carol. As the story goes, one night, the Temptations went into the studio with nothing but a bottle of Crown Royal and a carton of Benson & Hedges and said, “Fuck the lyrics. ” What came out was an improvised, nonlinear sermon, soul song, and outright classic about Jesus, Santa Claus and freedom. Food As noted in the Caucasians Guide to Black Thanksgiving, all holiday dinners are just lesser versions of black cookouts. The Christmas meal is basically the identical menu from Black Thanksgiving with ham replacing the turkey. Dont get me wrong?there can be a turkey at Christmas, but it is not the Beyoncé of the holiday-food lineup. It is more of a Ciara-like side dish. Unlike white Christmas, Black Christmas doesnt include fruitcake or rum cake. Black Christmas is more pie-centric. The sweet potato pie is the headliner, but it is not an after-dinner dessert. It is usually placed on the counter and eaten before, during and after the holidays. The average black household goes through 349 pies, 11 red-velvet cakes and six of those tins of hard-ass Royal Dansk cookies. Royal Dansk These cookies are the biggest Christmas mystery of all. No one knows where they came from or how they got into your house. Its not like you were thinking all year: “I cant wait for Christmas so I can chip a tooth on a piece of baked flour sprinkled with granulated sugar! ” Yet they are always there. And you always eat them. But the worst part of it all is that sometime in April, you will see the same tin, and even though you werent craving anything sweet, youll open up that tin to eat one again. But it will be filled with sewing needles and thread. I think Santa Claus is leaving this shit behind as a prank. The Story of Black Christmas Finally, you should know that the Christmas story is different in black households. Instead of a beautiful yarn about a blond savior, the following is a summary of what we are celebrating: A few thousand years ago, Mary and Josephs camel broke down in Bethlehem. Because it was Christmastime (I know, but does any of this make sense. hotel options were limited. Jo-Jo (as we call him) decided to rent an Airbnb, but when they arrived, the discovered that they had reserved a room in a manger. But Mary was pregnant, so they didnt make a big deal out of the situation, even when she went into labor. When the child was born, Joseph was a little suspicious that the child didnt look anything like him, but before he could say anything, three dudes showed up at the barn door with a gold chain, some incense and beard oil (yes, as King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Jesus was also born with a #BeardGang membership. An archangel named Chance the Angel (which is why the similarly named hip-hop star must always specify that he is “the rapper”) announced that the new child will be the Messiah. Joseph was about to Google the definition of the word “Messiah” when one of the wise men said, “That means savior” and everyone cheered. A few years later, Jesus would be killed by cops after being accused of gangbanging with disciples, making wine without a liquor license and holding a Sermon on the Mount without a rally. He was unarmed and died with his hands up. #ChristLivesMatter.

Not to be confused with the 1974 classic, which is amazing) is quite possibly one of the worst, try too hard, agenda pushing, laughably bad films I've ever seen.
We both left feeling like precious life had been stolen, and it's so horribly written and directed that I am almost struggling to properly express just how shitty it is. This makes me so sad I was so looking forward to this one. I love the original black Christmas. I wasn't a fan of the remake so I was hoping they would do a good job with this one! This whole video I was like, what message is supposed to be in this movie? It supposed to be a fun slasher Christmas movie.
“All Men Bad” “Women Are Helpless Victims” “Women Are Strong Independent and dont need no man” Beep Boop. What terrible writing, dialog and story. A shame and waste of a remake, doesn't deserve to share the same title as the original. The highlight of watching this movie was when my friend accidentally stuck her elbow in my overpriced nacho cheese. It started out pretty bad, the kills where less then thrilling, the suspense. well aside from hoping the cat doesn't was none. The idea of girl power is fine but it's over kill like an all female action episode in a 90's tv sitcom ( I don't believe that was the intention) I like campy movies but this was going in to many directions and couldn't pull it off. I was in a group of 9 people and none of us liked it. Just stick with the original Black Christmas.
