MulÃn.e. Mulan 2020 soundtrack. “ Mulan ” fans in mainland China on Friday welcomed the news that Disney will postpone the global release of the new live-action blockbuster, happy that they’ll likely now get the chance to see the film in theaters in sync with the rest of the world. The new “ Mulan ” was scheduled to release worldwide outside of China, one of Disney ’s most crucial overseas markets, on March 27. Chinese cinemas have been closed since late January due to the coronavirus epidemic. Disney’s potentially costly decision to move ahead without China came despite the firm’s efforts to specifically cater to mainland audiences in its new retelling of the classic Chinese ballad, particularly in the decision to cast popular China-born starlet Liu Yifei as the titular heroine. Chinese fans took to social media on Friday to express their relief that the film had been pulled ? both for health reasons, and out of fears of piracy and spoilers as the last ones to get a theatrical release. “Thank god!!!! Now I won’t be spoiled, ” said one poster to China’s Twitter-like Weibo platform. Another enthused: “Finally they’ve pulled it! They should’ve done so long ago. Now everyone can watch it at the same time together. ” Most wrote of their support for the decision to prioritize health concerns. “Safety first! We’ll pull out the red carpet for the film at a better time, ” wrote one commenter, adding: “Maybe now you can do the premiere in China? ” The film had its initial U. S. debut in Hollywood on March 9. By Friday evening, the Weibo hashtag “Mulan Global Release Cancelled” had been viewed 630 million times. Disney released all four of its 2019 live action remakes in the mainland last year. China was the highest grossing overseas territory for October’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” ($48. 8 million) and July’s “The Lion King” ($120 million), and the second largest foreign market for May’s “Aladdin” ($112 million) and March’s “Dumbo” ($21. 9 million). Directed by New Zealand’s Niki Caro, “Mulan” is most expensive live-action feature to ever be helmed by a woman, with a budget of at least $200 million. It will obviously be seeking to earn big in China, one of the world’s most censorious nations where these days, it’s hard for any cultural phenomenon to sidestep thorny politics. Earlier, the film had come under fire after Liu publicly expressed support across all her social media channels for the Hong Kong police force accused of excessive violence in attempts to quell pro-democracy protests there, leading for some to call for a boycott of the title. More recently, she’s come under fire on mainland social media from Chinese nationalist trolls who have criticized local fans for identifying with and taking pride in a star who technically gave up her Chinese nationality to gain a U. passport. “ Liu Yifei is too miserable ? beyond the Great Firewall [of internet censorship] the pro-Hong Kongers smear her, and within the Great Firewall the nationalists smear her, ” joked one Weibo commenter. Some former detractors gave her credit, however, for openly saying on her promotional tour that she hails from Wuhan, the city at the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic where the disease originated. “She’s the only one who dares to say in front of the world media that she’s a Wuhan native, so I’m a fan of her. Domestically right now, how many from Wuhan would dare openly admit that’s where they’re from? ” read one post. People from Wuhan have been subject to extreme stigma since the start of the virus. Particularly in the early, panic-striken days of the epidemic, many ended up outcasts shunned by their peers and neighbors, kept out of hotels and even specially tracked and registered by the authorities ? even in other parts of the country. Beyond “Mulan, ” a growing list of other films have recently canceled their scheduled debuts due to coronavirus concerns, including Disney’s “New Mutants” and “Antlers, ” Paramount’s “A Quiet Place 2” and “The Love Birds, ” and Universal Studios’ “Fast & Furious 9. ” “Mulan” marks the third film starring Chinese superstar Gong Li to be pulled in almost as many months, after Lou Ye’s “Saturday Fiction” ? which debuted at Venice ? was pulled from its expected Chinese theatrical release in December, presumably for censorship reasons, and Peter Chan’s highly anticipated volleyball film “Leap” cancelled its Chinese new year sortie just as the coronavirus situation was heating up. But many Chinese fans say that neither the virus nor the delay will dampen their enthusiasm for Mulan. “A good meal won’t spoil just because it’s served a bit late. A good film will always catch the world’s attention, whenever it comes out, ” one wrote online. [17] [6] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] Walt Disney Pictures expressed interest in a live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated film Mulan starring international star Zhang Ziyi, with Chuck Russell chosen as the director. The film was originally planned to start filming in October 2010, but was canceled. [18] On March 30, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney had restarted development of the live-action adaptation with Chris Bender and J. C. Spink producing, while Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek would be writing the screenplay. [19] On October 4, 2016, it was announced that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver would rewrite the script, combining the Chinese ballad and the 1998 animated film, while Jason Reed would be producing the film along with Chris Bender and Jake Weiner. [20] In February 27, 2020, Reed revealed that Mulan's sidekick from the original film, Mushu, was removed due to the character's negative reception in China. [6] Redd also said, aside from both the original ballad and the animated film, the filmmakers drew inspiration from different Chinese adaptations of the ballad while writing the film, stating that, since "[t]he traditional Disney audience and the diaspora Asian audience viewed the movie in one way, and the traditional Chinese in China audience viewed a slightly different way", the filmmakers "dug in to try and make sure that [they are] addressing both of those audiences in a thoughtful way". [6] Casting [ edit] Liu Yifei will be playing Mulan in the remake. Since several recent Hollywood films were accused of whitewashing, Mulan has been under intense scrutiny since The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney was making a live-action adaptation of Mulan. An online petition titled "Tell Disney You Don't Want A Whitewashed Mulan! " received more than 100, 000 signatures. [4] On October 4, 2016, Disney announced that a global search for a Chinese actress to portray the title role was underway. [21] A team of casting directors visited five continents and saw nearly 1, 000 candidates for the role with criteria that required credible martial arts skills, the ability to speak clear English, and star quality. [22] On November 29, 2017, Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei was cast in the film to portray the titular role of Mulan. Many celebrated this as a win for diversity in Disney films. [4] Further cast announcements for Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li, and Xana Tang were made in April 2018, [5] [9] Utkarsh Ambudkar and Ron Yuan in May, [23] Yoson An and Chum Ehelepola in June, [8] Jason Scott Lee in July, [7] Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Jimmy Wong and Doua Moua in August, [16] [13] and Chen Tang in September. [14] Director [ edit] Disney originally sought an Asian director. Disney first considered Ang Lee, Taiwanese film director and two-time Academy Award winner for Best Director. The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that Lee was approached but declined on October 12, 2016. [24] According to the report, published on November 22, 2016, he said that he would like to see an Asian director leading the film, but he himself had to decline because he was still obliged to promote his film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. [25] Next, Disney met with Jiang Wen for the position; finally on February 14, 2017, Niki Caro was hired as the director of the film, which made Mulan the second Disney film with a female director and a budget above $100 million following A Wrinkle in Time. [26] Filming [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. ( January 2019) Principal photography began on August 13, 2018, at different locations in New Zealand and China and wrapped on November 25, 2018. [27] [16] According to actress Gong Li, the film's production budget was $290?300 million due to the "massive and... unprecedented scale" of the sets, [28] [29] although the actual figure was later reported to be $200 million. [2] [30] Post-production [ edit] The visual effects are provided by Sony Pictures Imageworks, Weta Digital, Framestore, and Image Engine, with Seth Maury and Andres Langlands serving as visual effects supervisors and Sean Andrew Faden serving as production supervisor. [31] Music [ edit] Director Niki Caro revealed that the remake won't feature any songs from the original film; [32] the film instead will feature instrumental versions of the original film's songs. [33] Caro later explained that the songs were deleted because she felt it didn't fit with her realistic vision of the film, she believes that since people do not break out into song as they enter war, the film should not either. Though she still tried to "honour the music from the animation in a very significant way" [34], she did not want to disrespect the original film in anyway; however, she claimed she could not find a place to squeeze in the original music. Producer Jason Reed clarified Caro's previous statement by saying that the songs will be featured "in a slightly different way" in the remake. [6] Harry Gregson-Williams, who previously worked with Caro on The Zookeeper's Wife, composed the film's score. [1] Matthew Wilder, who previously co-wrote the songs for the original film, revealed that the remake will feature a new version of the song " Reflection ", and that the song "thematically plays a large part in the new movie throughout the score". [35] Christina Aguilera, who previously performed an end-credits version of "Reflection" for the original film, confirmed during a performance in The Xperience that she had recorded a new version of "Reflection", as well as new mate
