Pigeon Impossible, the silent animated film by Lucas Martell released on 9 November that took 4 years to make, passed the 1 million views mark on YouTube after less than 2 weeks online. The film is set in the neighborhood of the International Spy Museum in Washington, D. C., where two of my nieces and I spent an enjoyable afternoon in October. I grew up in Cold War D. C. ? I hope other teachers havent had exactly the same idea yet: Heres my contribution of a lesson plan to the upcoming EFL blog carnival. Target group: Adult education, Business English (group and one-to-one) Level: multilevel, ca. B2 Language goals: 1. Speaking 2. report writing 3. spy/ thriller vocabulary (a one-to-one student is reading Le Carré) 4. predictions; 5. could/ coudnt/ was able to (describing general ability vs. single achievements) Material/ preparation: Go online to. Look at still of pigeon inside the briefcase. Collect and write up predictions (note grammar: I think, will probably, is likely to. If teaching a group, let separate groups develop and present their scenarios. ) Watch to about 2:32 (pigeon has discovered that the suitcase can fly and is armed; man finds bagel again. Headers: pigeon could,? man couldnt, man was able to Tell students they are the man and will have to write a report to their line manager about the unforseen incident with the pigeon. (If youre teaching a group, do this in pairs. Tell them to concentrate on describing what the pigeon could do with the additional powers at its disposal, what they (as the man) couldnt do to interfere and what they (as the man) were ultimately able to do to stop pigeon and end the incident Note grammar: contrast “could” for general ability with “was able to” for ability in a specific situation; couldnt is more natural for negatives. Rookie secret agent Walter Beckett is on his first day on the job, and is given one of the most important roles in national security: controlling a small part of the nation's nuclear arsenal, just in case! And yet, his training never covered what to do with an overly pushy pigeon. The first animation project by Lucas Martel, Pigeon: Impossible is a six-minute short that won "Best Short" at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival, and can be watched here. Serves as the basis of the feature-length animated film Spies in Disguise. Pigeon: Impossible provides examples of the following tropes: A Nuclear Error: One button push in a briefcase is enough to launch a nuclear missile at Moscow. Awesome Briefcase: Beckett's briefcase can fly, has twin laser cannons, launches anti-tank missiles, and launches nuclear missiles. Feathered Fiend: The titular pigeon, who catches on to the briefcase's controls - especially its weapons systems - remarkably quickly. Laser-Guided Karma: At the end of the short, the pigeon has gotten the bagel it was gets squashed by a falling piece of missile debris. The Men in Black: The CIA 'uniform' has the requisite black suit, and Beckett's handler wears dark glasses. Weaponized Landmark: The Washington Monument contains a Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile.

(Honor, Trust, Unity and Valor) is sent to recover an attack drone from Japanese arms dealer Katsu Kimura in Japan. As soon as the buyer, cybernetically enhanced terrorist Killian, arrives, Sterling breaks in against the orders of H. director Joy Jenkins, defeats Kimura and his gang, and manages to escape with the briefcase containing the drone. Sterling returns to H. headquarters to confront Walter Beckett, a socially inept MIT graduate and outcast young scientist, for equipping nonlethal weapons into his suit. Walter tries to convince Sterling that there is a more peaceful way to save the world, but Sterling fires him before he can explain his latest invention: biodynamic concealment. Sterling discovers the briefcase to be empty and is confronted by Marcy Kappel, a security forces agent, who reveals footage of Sterling (actually Killian in a holographic disguise) leaving with the drone, labeling him as a traitor. Sterling escapes the H. and decides to track down Walter to help him disappear. Meanwhile, Killian breaks into the H. weapons facility. While searching Walter's home for his invention, Sterling unknowingly ingests the concoction and transforms into a pigeon. Before Walter can start making an antidote to change him back, Marcy and other H. agents chase the duo through the city, but they escape in Sterling's spy car. The two track down Kimura to a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. There, they learn of Killian's whereabouts in Venice, Italy before Marcy and the H. can capture them again. On their way to Venice, Walter attempts to make the antidote, but fails. Arriving in Venice, Walter is confronted by the H. V., who are unaware of Sterling's condition. Revealing that she knows about Wendy, Walter's mother who was a police officer who died on duty, Marcy tries to convince him to help turn Sterling in, but Walter refuses. Suddenly, a drone distracts the H. and allows Walter and Sterling to escape. The two discover the drone carrying the H. agent database, and Walter manages to retrieve it. However, Killian shows up, takes the database, and prepares to kill Walter. With help from hundreds of pigeons in the surrounding area, they distract Killian and flee. Disguised as Sterling once more, Killian escapes the H. V., shaking Marcy's suspicions of Sterling upon her seeing him with a robot hand. Whilst underwater in a submarine, Walter reveals he planted a tracking device on Killian and locates him at the weapons facility. Walter manages to perfect the antidote and successfully turns Sterling human again. Reaching Killian's hideout, Sterling is concerned about Walter's safety and sends him away in the submarine. Once inside, Sterling confronts Killian, but is defeated and captured as Killian reveals he has mass produced hundreds of drones to target everyone at the agency using the database as revenge for killing his crew in a past mission led by Sterling. Noticing Walter returning in the submarine, Killian destroys it; unbeknownst to them, Walter survives with the help of one of his inventions, the inflatable hug. Once Walter frees Sterling, the two escape and contact Marcy for support as the drones approach H. headquarters in Washington D. C. Walter attempts to hack into Killian's bionic arm. When Killian realizes this, he tries to flee via air with a drone, but Walter catches up. Walter risks his life by trapping Killian in one of his protective gadgets and deactivates the villain's arm as Walter himself falls, but Sterling, who has turned himself back into a pigeon, successfully flies for the first time and carries him to safety with help from other pigeons, while Killian is found and arrested. Want to start a great class discussion and get students buzzing with inferences? Use short films to get those inferences flowing! During my first week out of three (and to infinity and beyond) that I focus on teaching students to infer, I try to incorporate many different ways to think about how we make an inference when reading. I like to kickstart each day during that first week with a different short film to get our inferences flowing. Students are given an inference chart and asked to record what they see, what they know, and what they infer. Now, I will say that these are a great tool, but when I first started to use these I had an unrealistic expectation…I thought that students would make their inferences in order from the start. In all actuality, they were more quick to make the inference. I found this discouraging at first, but then I realized that if they had the inference, then it would be my job to get them to think about their thinking, asking them to think about what they saw and what they knew that allowed them to infer at all. I don't change the order of the chart, because it's important ?for them to recognize that the process actually happens in the order that the chart is in, and so we talk a lot about how this is helping them to understand the process of their thoughts as they make decisions about the text that they are reading. It's really a rather awesome discussion and by the end of the week, they ARE actually filling out the chart in order. Here are the links to the videos that I use, in the order that I use them. We start with For the Birds,?which students have usually seen at least once. It's fairly easy to infer that the larger bird is being bullied and the small birds don't like him because he's different. Here's the chart that my students came up with. Again, they definitely had the two inferences immediately, but I had them go back and think about why they were able to make each inference. Here's one of our inferences from Geri's Game: I think this one is my favorite because it is chock full of inferences. Here's one of the many that my our class came up with: This is an inference that my class made about the first part, before the second musician entered the picture. Since I do this one on our fifth day of this, students have made a lot of progress, which is great because this film is a bit longer and there are so many things that can be inferred when you watch it. I have them do this one entirely on their own for a classwork grade. I'd definitely recommend having several pages ready to fill out, as my students had TONS to share! It was awesome to see how much they had progressed in their understanding of this strategy by day #5! If you would like to use the charts and examples that I've shared here, please click on the image below.

We have had lots of fun learning about inferencing. For two weeks we talked about an practiced infering with books, videos and real life situations. Day 1 - To start our lesson we watched a great pod cast from a class on inferencing. Check it out! After watching the video we looked through a packed suitcase to make inferences about the person the suitcase belongs to and where they went. I packed a suitcase with a few of my husbands things as if he was going to a baseball game. I would show the class 2 or 3 items and then let them discuss with their group. Day 2 - We watched a great video called Pigeon Impossible. It is really funny and has lots of opportunities to pause and infer. The kids loved it and everyone had their hands up to answer questions. These are some of the questions I asked: What is the man's profession? What is the setting? What might happen? As you watch the video you will see many other questions you can ask. Day 3 - Crime Scene This was my favorite day! It was so much fun! Check of the post I made about our crime scene. Day 4 and 5 - Riddles We read a few different riddles and then students created their own riddles. For my higher students I had them write a riddle about something that is not physical; wind, love, etc. Each riddle included 4 clues and the answer. Week 2 We read poems and discussed how to infer what is happening. I used kids poems and poems by Robert Frost. We also read a mystery and discussed the clues that help us infer what will happen.

By on November 10, 2009 “Pigeon: Impossible”, a marvelous CG animated short by Lucas Martell. This was Lucas first attempt at animation, taking him 5 years to create the film. A rookie secret agent is faced with a problem seldom covered in basic training: what to do when a curious pigeon gets trapped inside your multi-million dollar, government-issued nuclear briefcase. via Boing Boing Follow Laughing Squid on Facebook and Twitter Related Laughing Squid Posts.
Đi?p viên ?n danh review. Despite being almost 2 hours, the movie keeps a good pace to keep kids and adults entertained. I took my 4 year old to see it and it held his attention and several laughs from not only him, but everyone in the theater. I was a bit shocked to see repeated gun use, and instance of gambling, and several instances of alcohol, but it is an action spy movie so I should have guessed as much. Regardless, I found the humor very well done. Hopefully it hits a streaming service in the near future so I can rewatch.
