Background: Im going to go into this with the assumption that you all know what the old Star Wars Expanded Universe was. The most important thing that you need to know is that in the old Expanded Universe, Han Solo and Lei Organa had three children; Jacen, Jaina and Anakin. This trio were intended to become the new “heroes” of the expanded universe, inheriting the mantle from Luke, Leia and Han. This plan did not work out for a number of reasons. Following on from my previous post, I wanted to look at another of the three children. This particular Hobbydrama story is about a particular character from the Expanded Universe and the way that the plans for their character were completely derailed. This would in turn not only affect them as a character, but also would have long-term problems for the writing of the Expanded universe to come. The focus of this story is Anakin Solo, the third child of Leia Organa and Han Solo. The youngest of the three children, much like his siblings Jacen and Jaina, he basically had destiny thrust upon him from day one. From his very introduction as a nameless child he was apparently destined for big things, with the idea that he would one day become very powerful in the Force and a key figure of momentous destiny and the like. It also needs to be mentioned that Anakins existence was largely an accident. In the early days, the Star Wars expanded universe wasnt actually really a universe as such; rather, it was separate writers working more or less independently of each other and often unaware of each others works. This is how we got, among other things, Boba Fett falling into the Sarlacc pit three times. It wouldnt be until years later that the universe would be tied together, which lead to a lot of continuity headaches In this case, Rick Veitch introduced Leia and Hans nameless son in the Dark Empire comic series while unaware that Timothy Zahn had also introduced Jacen Solo in the Thrawn trilogy of novels. The origins of the two children were irreconcilable from day one, with the solution being that Leia and Han now had a third child. This boy would remain nameless for a while until they were finally named as Anakin Solo in one of Kevin J. Andersons novels. (Well put aside here the fact that Leia chose to name one of her children after the man who had tortured her, forced her to watch as her homeworld was destroyed to simply make a point and had bought untold suffering to the galaxy) For the next few years, Anakin, along with Jaina and Jacen would appear in various books as children, usually as supporting characters or background elements. They also got kidnapped. A lot. Their fictional career stepped up in 1995 with the Young Jedi Knights (henceforth YJK) series, a fourteen book young adult series that featured her and Jacen as teenagers, and now enrolled in Lukes new Jedi Academy. Much of the YJK series was written by Kevin J. Anderson an author who was vital to shaping the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. He is widely considered to be not a very good author, and his books full of plot holes and weak characterisation. He also was responsible for a massive degree of power bloat in the Expanded Universe, essentially turning Jedi into supermen while also introducing a host of “ultimate” doomsday weapons. Anderson left a big footprint behind, and created numerous headaches for authors that followed him. During these books, Anakin grew a lot as a character and, more to the point, became something of the hero of the series. During this time the idea that he had some great destiny ahead of him was constantly emphasised, in essence putting him well ahead of the rest of the cast. This included his two siblings who in many ways served as supporting characters to him. Anakin fell in love, defeated a few villains and generally proved himself to be a potentially powerful Jedi Knight. The next stage in the evolution of the Expanded Universe was the New Jedi Order (henceforth NJO) series. I discussed the background to the series in my previous post, but the key point of the series needs to be reiterated here. The goal was to create a degree of generational change, by moving the emphasis of the stories away from the movie characters (eg Luke, Leia and Han) and to those characters created for the Expanded Universe (eg, Jaina, Jacen and Anakin. A key part of this plan was that Anakin would become the next big hero of the Star Wars universe, essentially taking the place of Luke at the head of the franchise. There were a number of reasons of this, many of which came out of the character development in the YJA series. Anakin had, after all, come out of that as a generally heroic figure that had been instrumental to the series. Conversely, Jacen Solo had come off as being somewhat directionless and a lot less traditionally heroic (and more invested in small fluffy animals. Jaina was never going to be the next big hero for one reason. (hint: girl. From the outset of the NJO, Anakin was pushed to the forefront. He was not only depicted as being a traditional heroic figure in fighting the invading armies (of extra-galactic S&M freaks that whipped people to death with eels, mind you) but in a number of other fields. Early on it became clear that these creatures were somehow not connected to the Force, unlike every other creature in the galaxy. As such, Jedi powers wouldnt work against them. However, Anakin developed a method to detect them no less. And that was just the start off it. Anakin rediscovered an ancient and powerful lost Jedi technique that was vital to efforts to fight the invaders. He also designed war Droids that were intended to fight the invaders. He saved refugees, killed armies of zombie mutants, taught new Jedi valuable life lessons, saved the entire Jedi order from destruction and was hailed as a galactic hero. He even became a hero to an outcast faction of the invaders, something that would become important to their eventual defeat. And then he was killed off. His death came out of nowhere, and was entirely covered in a single novel (one that was written by Troy Denning, a figure that would later become infamous for his other Expanded Universe works. It also amounted to a side story, as he gave his life to end a threat that hadnt existed before that point. And while it was a suitable death, being one of heroic self-sacrifice in which he saved a number of other lives (Jaina included) it also was rather unsatisfactory in as far as it seemed that it was largely irrelevant to the story as a whole. It was also obvious that this decision had been made a relatively late date. The writers had been pushing Anakin every step of the way, with full editorial support. Books featuring other characters had been cancelled in favour of those that pushed Anakin. Author Michael A. Stackpole commented that he had written one of his NJO novels knowing that Anakin was going to die, but also hoping that the decision would be reversed. After his death other planned books in the series would be cancelled and a lot of reshuffling occurred. This left the simple question as to why. The most commonly cited answer is that George Lucas intervened, feeling that Anakin Solos story was to close to that of Anakin Skywalker, especially given that the prequel trilogy movies were coming out during the publication of the NJO series. However, there are other claims floating around. The first is that somebody at Lucasfilm was concerned that there might be reader confusion between the two Anakins, especially given that they were now publishing Clone Wars novels featuring Anakin Skywalker. Theres even some rumours floating around that the plan had been to kill off Luke, and that Lucas had shot down that idea, resulting in Anakin being killed off in his place. And others have suggested that Jacen was meant to die, and that the fates of the two brothers were swapped at a late stage; however, the story leading up to Anakins death doesnt really fit where Jacens character was going. Regardless of the reason, Anakins story arc ended very suddenly. A lot of the build up of fate, destiny and prophecy around him had been abandoned and left unfulfilled. His role as the next big hero also had fallen away, requiring the writers to scramble in order to fill up the hole left in the story. Ultimately, Jacen Solo would be vital to the outcome of the NJO series in a resolution that somewhat amounted to desperately filling in a hole that the authors had created themselves. However, his own character would soon go well off the rails.

Kkkkkk coitada. A Criança Zombie watch now.
Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

Felicia: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 Kira: Part 4, Part 5, Part 6 Felicia: Part 7, Part 8 Voodoo in Southern America: Part 9. Another excerpt from: Voodoo in Southern America by Arthur Gurden Published 1941. Things continued happily for two years. Alphonse and Susie married, and she bore him the first of their children, a daughter named Elizabeth. With the money he earned working for Doctor Joachim, Alphonse was able to make improvements to their house, purchase a score of chickens, and buy enough seeds to cultivate a vegetable garden of his own. He also began construction of a greenhouse to mirror Doctor Joachims. The doctor wouldnt be around forever, and Alphonse imagined himself his employers heir. One day, he and Cash would take over the apothecary shop, and he would grow Wattingsroot and Bunnengos and all the rest on his own property. Doctor Joachims legend grew. His name was thrown about on the docks and in the saloons and brothels Under-the-Hill, then carried up and down the Mississippi River aboard steamships. At the apothecary shop, Alphonse waited on traveling merchants from Boston, Virginia tobacco farmers, and even purported Voodoo queens from New Orleans. Polliwog Chevalier still slimed about in the shadows, pitching his dubious fish oil to unsuspecting out-of-towners and bellyaching about Doctor Joachim over whiskey at The Soggy Boot. Whatever business hed procured for himself back in the day had largely defected to the doctors more effective pills and potions. Mid-summer of 1855, Annabelle left in the dead of night and returned to New Orleans, preferring the wrath of Marie Laveau to Polliwogs mercurial drunkenness. Around midnight, Alphonse was told, Polliwog would start plotting the doctors downfall, talking about a posse of Natchez ruffians unhappy with his cornering of the pharmaceutical market and morally untroubled by spontaneous lynchings. The few patrons of the Soggy Boot sober enough for coherence would nod along. But Alphonse doubted any of them took him seriously. As for the incident with the Nameless, the Yasheno, it was all but forgotten. Just another bizarre trick of the doctors that Alphonse stopped questioning. Cash brought it up, once, while he and Alphonse stalked a particularly persistent nest of piblings. “Nothings gonna come of it, ” he said. “I dont even remember that binding spell, so I cant possibly repeat it. ” “Itll come to you. ” Alphonse and Cash spun around. They hadnt noticed Doctor Joachim as hed slipped into the greenhouse to join them. “When you want it… when you truly desire the services of your Yasheno, the words and the ritual will be clear in your mind as your own name. ” Cash was quiet the rest of the day. They came on a cloudless April evening, the sound of hooves harmonious with the singing cicadas. Alphonse was up a ladder, picking Lamigaven flowers and depositing them in a bucket. Below him, Cash extracted Viblurbub berries, chatting about a new game his two young sons had invented. Hester believed she was pregnant with their fifth child. BANG! For the moment, God was on Alphonses side. Hed been clutching the ladder with both hands when the large object struck the side of the greenhouse; if his position had been less steady, hed have fallen for sure. Cash froze. Alphonse tore down the ladder and eyed Doctor Joachims shotgun, resting against a bookshelf. CRACK! BANG! The walls shook. From outside, a voice rang out. “Why dontcha bastards come out and face us like men? ” Hoots and hollers came in response, followed by more loud thuds. Someone was throwing rocks at the greenhouse. Many someones. BANG! SNAP! A piece of wood broke loose from the wall and ricocheted, narrowly missing Cashs head and violently crashing into a Scalliwag. Startled, the plant howled like an injured dog. That was it. Alphonse snatched up the doctors rifle and, as another piece of the wall broke loose, paced to the door. In one movement, he turned the knob, hoisted the gun to his shoulder, and stepped into the warm air. There were eight of them, some sitting atop horses and mules, others crouching to pick up more stones, all bearing the bloodthirsty smiles of an executioner. Eight men. Three white, two black, the remainder a mix of the two. Alphonse recognized a few of them from town. Voodoo Tom, clutching a sharp machete, stood near the back, nearly vibrating in macabre glee. They had clearly not come to negotiate. At the front, his grin widest of all, was Polliwog Chevalier. One hand held a rope wrapped around his shoulder, the other rested at his waist. “Well, boys, look who we smoked out of his hidey-hole. ” Alphonse pulled the trigger. BANG! He stumbled back. Alphonse, whod never shot at another man, and who intended to scare the men more than harm them, was more rattled by his warning shot than they were. He hit nothing but air. Polliwog then raised his arm. Alphonse barely had time to register the glint of moonlight off metal before he heard a POP, and burning pain exploded in his chest. He clutched at his shirt. He pulled his hand away soaked in blood. Then he smelled smoke. With a whooping war cry, two more men rode around from behind the wooden structure, bearing flaming torches. The greenhouse was on fire. Adrenaline dulling the pain, Alphonse dashed back through the door. He found Cash darting about frantically, his arms full of Bunnengos and Wattingsroot clippings, desperately trying to decide what else to save. “Leave it! ” Alphonse screamed. “Theres ten of them. Theyre armed. ” Doctor Joachims magical nursery was dying. Already, orange tongues of fire cut through the wooden walls and set alight the crawling Lamigavens, their vines thrashing angrily. The purple-blue bubble of artificial atmosphere melted like butter in a pan. A cacophony of screams rang out, like a colony of dying rabbits, blood-chillingly human. The Scalliwags were burning. Their ugly tentacled heads twisted and writhed. Piblings, smoked from their subterranean homes, skittered carelessly over the dirt floor like cockroaches in the light. Cash didnt listen. Alphonse snatched up his bucket of Lamigaven flowers, then doubled over in a fit of coughing. Grey smoke filled the greenhouse. Eyes burning, he ran for the visible outline of the door, Cash close on his heels. They exited to face Polliwog and his laughing mob. Horses paced like wildcats before a kill, spurned by predatory riders. Torchlight danced. Whoops and taunts cut through the warm spring air. Cash and Alphonse were surrounded, trapped like mice in a barn, their executioners savoring the moment, playing with their food. Alphonse felt a burst of pain in his head, and then nothing. He awoke on a cot in a one-room cabin. First, he registered the soggy bandages wrapped around his chest. Next, he noticed Cash, sitting at his side and pressing something warm against his forehead. He tried to sit up. Cash put a hand on his ribcage, indicating he should stay where he was. Alphonse digested the rest of the room in pieces. There was writing on the wall. Blocks of text scrawled directly onto the wood paneling, in the same bizarre logograms hed seen the doctor scribble on paper. Black ink mostly, but some in deep red. Interspersed with the writing were large, pinned-up pieces of parchment, some also bearing strange letters, others consisting of large drawings, complicated arrangements of circles and lines and squares. In one corner, a wood-burning stove. Clutter everywhere. Disorganized shelves of books and rolled-up parchment, multicolored vials to match those in the doctors apothecary shop, assorted tools and utensils and wooden boxes with broken latches. Drying Viblurbub leaves hung on a line. With a turn of his stomach, Alphonse realized the pink hides drying on another rack were the extracted skins of Pibblers. A little table at the center of the room. On it rested two of the pastel-pink spheres that had hung in the greenhouse. It was cool in the cabin, cooler than the warm night should have allowed. He realized then that everything hed seen had been tinted with a sickly yellow glow. They were in a bubble - another artificial atmosphere encircled the room. A door opened somewhere behind him. Then, Doctor Joachims voice. “He awake? ” Alphonse sat up to face the doctor, who he clutched a third pastel hanging spheres, this one girlish violet. It was the closest Alphonse had ever been to one. He saw something dark in color, rattling around within its plasticine wall. Cash nodded. The doctor smiled at Alphonse. One of the posse, Cash explained, had struck Alphonse over the head with a wooden plank. Cash was sure theyd both be killed. Arms full of clippings, rifle dropped inside the burning greenhouse, facing a small army of angry, burly men, he was defenseless. Then, a sparkling ball of lightning bounced across the ground like tumbleweed, glowing brilliantly in the darkness and aimed directly at Polliwog and his conspirators. The horses were spooked. One man was bucked to the ground as a second lightning ball followed the first. Panic ensued then; two men ran off into the darkness, those still on horseback struggled to regain control of the scared animals, and that marauders smile had been wiped clean off Polliwogs face. Doctor Joachim emerged from the shadows then, hands held apart, singing a low song as sparks of electricity shot between his open palms. The remaining arsonists scattered. Theyd come along for an easy kill; none desired martyrdom at the hands of an angry Voodoo. When the last had disappeared into the dark night, the doctor approached Cash. He told him to carry Alphonse to his cabin. Cash did what he said. He swung Alphonses limp form over a shoulder, leaving his employer alone to gaze upon the smoldering remains of his lifes work. The thin, yellowish
